On the Street.....Just Off Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles

I met CeCe (an aspiring singer) last week in LA while I was shooting a separate project.

I loved her look and knew immediately I had to shoot her. We did a few shots on Hollywood Blvd which came out very nicely.

On our walk back CeCe spotted Spiderman and said "I want my picture taken with him!"

Actually when we first spotted Spidey he wasn't wearing his mask and he was sitting on his luggage looking like a Marvel comic drawn by Diane Arbus.

Afterwards I kicked myself for not taking the shot of him sitting alone and looking so forlorn but the scene was too depressing for me to start the whole process of taking a portrait.

Hey! thats the spidey that Rob & Big net gunned on MTV haha....I like the shot, CeCe looks great

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 AM) :

Henna on her hands?
Interesting juxtaposition.

Blogger STYLE DU MONDE said ... (8:40 AM) :

Great shot. Her outfit is lovely.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 AM) :

spidey alone and forlorn? here you go

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (8:57 AM) :

She has a very interesting look/style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:59 AM) :

Sart, i like the story of the lost portrait more than the actual photo you've posted, it's so poignant. I think you should venture out in a rainy dawn and try and find him again.

Blogger Baking With Plath said ... (9:05 AM) :

She's gorgeous! This is such a great shot.

Blogger stacy said ... (9:09 AM) :

ah LA... gotta love it!

i find their completely different shaped eyes very captivating.

Blogger July Stars said ... (9:22 AM) :

Wow, love that picture ... CeCe has a very cool style. Any more pictures of her?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 AM) :

So funny!
Thanks for making me smile :-)
Lately, your photos seem to be about so much more than what people are wearing. They are like little stories. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this, you really are an artist.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 AM) :

I really like the spiderman look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:43 AM) :

The contrast between her overall and the shoes is too hard (material and colours). Sorry.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:45 AM) :

dav!d, that is a hilarious coincidence.

Blogger perezvila™ said ... (9:51 AM) :

hi there,
i'm a big fan of your work, and i keep coming to your site, and trying to style up my life!
but...
i can't help to tell you...
on your may 20th post, you said, that is summer in London... but, ITS NOT IN A DIFFERENT HEMISPHERE THAN NY. both places are in the north hemisphere...

... cheers!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:52 AM) :

Dav!d, where did you get that pic from?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

i know what it is, this is a very unflattering pose for Cece. And she looks like she's crowding spidey out of the picture..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 AM) :

ah comedy!!

Blogger Hovey Vintage said ... (10:31 AM) :

That's so so funny! I love the idea of a comic book created by Diane Arbus. The imagination is running wild!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 AM) :

that is just too fantastic for words ;D

Blogger Andrea said ... (11:06 AM) :

The Spidey stuff is great, but the real question is how on earth does she get in and out of that thing?

Blogger heidi said ... (11:10 AM) :

i LOVE this shot! Missing out on that portrait will haunt you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 AM) :

I don't really like her outfit, shoes are nice, but the dress not and it doesn't fit her shoes. sorry I just don't think its anything interesting.

Great photo!

Friendly neighborhood Spiderman

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:06 PM) :

I'm surprised that not many posters have commented on the shoes. I don't think they work at all--in fact, excluding lead-cast diving clogs, I think those are some of the worst shoes I've ever seen.

Blogger AsianCajuns said ... (12:12 PM) :

I love the striking juxtaposition, even with the mirrored poses. This photo strikes me as hilarious, in a wry way. Perfect for a Monday!

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (12:18 PM) :

Blogger Julia said ... (12:24 PM) :

Have you seen the documentary confessions of a superhero? It's about the guys that work on the strip in superhero costumes. It's next on my netflix, so I haven't seen it yet to be able to comment on it fully but it's a really depressing story from the previews I've seen. I think he saves the picture and her outfit, which is nice until I see the shoes that don't really make sense with the upper half.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:26 PM) :

Great picture, beautiful girl, but from a fashion perspective it just doesn't work for me. Those shoes in the warm weather? And they just don't fit the rest of the outfit... Nope, not crazy about it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 PM) :

That is pretty cool...

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:16 PM) :

Maybe you made his day by asking to photograph him...you never know

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:22 PM) :

Wow! I'm sure not many people could pull that off.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:27 PM) :

The bold mixture of reds and blues is an innovative new take on a classic summertime pallette!
;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:43 PM) :

As a trapeze artist, i have to point out the bruises on her legs. It makes me feel less freakish for being covered with them myself. i'll show my legs more now. Thanks!

Blogger Marina Milojkovic said ... (1:52 PM) :

what band is she in?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

negative posters,

I implore you to learn how to form an opinion.
"I don't like it" is not an opinion. take a moment to explore why you're troubled by it using descriptive words and examples. that way, it can serve to benefit the poster, the readers and yourself in developing individual style.
P.S. once you have an opinion never apologize for it

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:57 PM) :

OMG~out of all the people, i can't believe you found CeCe! Here's her band "Le Rev" (www.myspace.com/lerev) She is also a well known actress here in LA. Been on lots of commercials. Soo cool to see her here on The Satorialist. She has GREAT style!!! All the time!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 PM) :

Can't help but wonder what comic book he was reading..

Blogger Poochie said ... (3:23 PM) :

The story and image is hi-larious!

I love the henna on her hands - I need to go get some done asap!

Poor Spidey - but how evocative "a comic book by Diane Arbus"... genius.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:48 PM) :

great shoes but not with that dress. those are for dries van noten autumn clothes.

her shins are so completely bruised, she looks like nancy spungeon from the knee down.

i too would have preferred the arbus-esque portrait of spidey.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

I love everything on her from the ankles up... I think about 0.1% of people could pull that outfit off! The shoes are really hideous though...
Amazing shot, sart!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:39 PM) :

She is on thecobrasnake.com constantly

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:48 PM) :

If I wanted to see pictures of people like CeCe and Katya, I would look on the Cobrasnake or the Skullset. I expected something different from your visit to LA. Girls like them, though very beautiful, are so common out here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:56 PM) :

1. i would have loved to see how this one-piece looks standing up. i don't suppose you would post any standing pix?

2. all y'all who diss the shoes and how they don't work with the rest. THAT IS SO CONSERVATIVE of you! edgy hot outfits aren't about matching! combining disparate elements to create an interesting and dynamic whole takes real skill, and she's done it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:17 PM) :

...it's that jumpsuit thing again... It doesn't look like it fits her very well. In my opinion, the shoes are too heavy as well. Really, really like the hennaed hands though - so much so that I'm thinking of having it done for the summer!! I want Spidey to come & patrol my area too!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:45 PM) :

hopefully you paid him the customary $1. great pic.

Blogger miss_seph said ... (5:55 PM) :

I agree witht he comments on the shoe combo - they're too hard in comparison with the light fabric used in the jumper. I can't envision what shoes would work with this, but I know they wouldn't be black, and they probably wouldn't be high heeled either. I do love the necklaces though!!

Blogger CULTURE CREATORS said ... (6:08 PM) :

How fabulous that you are in LA!!!? Welcome:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:39 PM) :

Does anyone know who makes those shoes? I love them. I would love to have a pair, or at least something very similar.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:12 PM) :

ah ha! finally an LA shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:39 PM) :

so glad you're finally in l.a.! this is very classic. i used to drive from hollywood to west hollywood in the mornings, and i'd see these characters parking far away from graumans, and walking in their costumes to "work". it was funny to see sponge bob get off the bus one time over on Highland.

Blogger Rice and Beans Vintage said ... (7:40 PM) :

creepy spidey. Great shot.

Blogger rolli said ... (7:55 PM) :

she is stunning.

Blogger L in progress said ... (7:58 PM) :

love it!
the way she sits there next to spiderman as if it is the most common thing in the world!
i'm jealous, i think i need a spiderman in my life.....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 PM) :

PS - I have to laugh a bit when people complain: "There are so many like her/him here!"

But, the thing is, we who don't live in your town or country enjoy seeing a "snapshot" of the local style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:43 PM) :

i believe they are marc jacobs from a/w 07...although the pair i own are a mix of suede and patent leather. too cute to see cece on here.

Blogger Seanrwatson2 said ... (8:58 PM) :

Blogger monstergirlee said ... (12:01 AM) :

I love love love those shoes. Anyone know who makes them?

Everything else, eh. Ok.

Blogger Tereneh Idia said ... (12:49 AM) :

I just moved to LA and know exactly that spot and scene on Hollywood Blvd not chic at all. But in true Sarto style you made it original and stylish. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 AM) :

Sart, you might have saved this guys days without knowing it. Fashion saving lifes indeed!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:29 AM) :

I like the striped fabric of her clothes, and I like her shoes. I like her 'attitude' too (though who doesn't play up for the camera these days?) And she has an interesting face.

However, in my humble opinion, the bruises on her legs seriously detract from the positives. They make her look unhealthy. Perhaps it makes a bit of a talking point though? When random people come up and ask how she got the bruises, she could make up some cool story about fighting stealth ninjas in her sleep, or something.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:03 AM) :

A daring move to combine a special looking dress with special and very bold looking shoes. Much more fun than very correctly combined conservative dresses and shoes, i think. Not anything anyone could pull off but she does it very well.

I'm afraid spideys strong colours disturb the picture a bit though, not being in the center. Maybe he could wash the suit a couple of times and then they would match?

Blogger sanecommunications said ... (3:33 AM) :

love the bruises and cuts on her shins ... separates her from being presumed a model ... as she is very beautiful ... you know this means that she lives life and isnt wrapped in cotton wool ...

go cece

Hearing your story about Spiderman guy without his mask on makes me even more sad that you didn't take his photo. :( You should come back; he's always there!

Also, spending time in la shooting on that stretch of Hollywood blvd, of all places? Really?
Please tell me you photographed places other than that overcrowded tourist trap.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:04 AM) :

I love this picture. It has made my Tuesday morning - thanks!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:32 AM) :

Great Shot, nice i like it...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:38 AM) :

I think the shoes contribute to an interesting 'vintage' vibe, vintage as in 1890s. Upon first glance at the picture I noticed the way in which she is wearing her hair, the long-legged jumpsuit (reminiscent of a onepiece wool bathingsuit shape) and the old-schoolyness of the shoes.
Of course upon closer inspection the henna'd hands, towering heel and ethnic stripes clarify that it isn't a vintage get-up. Which all contrasts beautifully with spidey.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:56 AM) :

That's a whole new angle on the all-in-one! I like the stripes but I don't think the shoes do any favours. As for Spiderman - is he endorsing the boots over trousers look??

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:03 AM) :

HAHA.. this picture is awesome!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:06 AM) :

I don't get what depresses me the most : her shoes or Spidey's sad eyes...

Blogger suga mama said ... (7:21 AM) :

C.c's absolutely gorgeous and a staple in the L.A. hipster scene...

her band le rev is incredible as well you should def. see them live..and she really is a nice girl on the inside and out...

she's also a quicksilver spokesmodel...and excellent actress..

her daring style inspires many

;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:03 AM) :

She is very pretty and poses with ease. I´m not bothered by the strange jumpsuit and the shoes. A nice picture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:27 AM) :

I love the colours. Reminds me of a Seersucker Blazer I wore as child in the seventies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 AM) :

The harshness of the black shoes makes the bruises on her legs show up more. This is why women used to wear pantyhose, to hide such defects. Also, the black shoes, while very cool on their own, don't seem to go with the sporty, sherbert-colored jumpsuit.
I love getting my hands and feet hennaed. It's such a calming experience.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:51 AM) :

I love the contrast of beauty and pathos. Very "Day of the Locust"

Blogger Branquinho said ... (9:55 AM) :

Lovely photo, as a composition. Not too fond of her outfit, shoes are not really for daywear, esspecially not with the outfit she's wearing here. This pretty girl can do better than that! Spiderman looks cool

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:16 AM) :

I love the grubby legs, and i really love the shoes, but that clothing thing would be a favorite item of mine if only i had it in the same thing cut off as a top, it looks too clown like in the bottom half.

ps. shes got brilliant eyebrows

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 AM) :

This has nothing to do with Spidy Man - I was just wondering - did I miss the young girl who was picked for the oh so controversial makeover?
And also about the shoeboxes - doesn't anyone on this blog have a cat? My cat loves to sit in a shoebox, she will squeeze herself in whether she fits or not, which is pretty appropriate for a shoebox.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

that "dress" everyone keeps talking about actually looks like a onesie / jumper to me. i see pant legs. the shoes look great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

hm the cobrasnake shoots her frequently as well... not sure about those shoes..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:46 PM) :

Great look, simple but lively. She looks like a cross between Coco Rocha and Anja Rubik. Anyone else see that?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:00 PM) :

i like her bruises. it shows that she's not afraid to get hurt while singing (probably) lovely and dramatic verse. she is an artist and doesn't conform to fashion dos and don'ts. she looks great..so does spidey there - protecting her no doubt. nice.

Blogger Lady Lala said ... (4:42 PM) :

You make super photos. Can you please include Noelle Valdivia. She moved from London to Los Angeles, CA but still dresses beautifully.

Blogger junglesiren said ... (10:01 PM) :

Love the picture. Spidey looks like he got caught off guard. He's out of spidey webs or something. He should be smoking a cig, he'd look cooler.

As for Ce Ce. What a pretty girl. I absolutely hate her clothes, head to toe. Fortunately for her she's too cute for most folks to care that she's dressed like a circus act who just fell out of bed.

Why do people think that 'cause it's Los Angeles ANYTHING goes? She's probably not even from L.A. just moved here so that she can walk around in her jammies and no one would care.

Come on.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 PM) :

agreed, i always love hearing these little stories behind the pictures, so thanks for that!

she's very pretty.
reminds me a bit of camilla bell.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 PM) :

I'm surprised nobody commented on what I liked about the picture: That her pantsuit is coincidentally a toned down version of Spiderman's suit. (Both are red and blue onesies)

The similar poses really emphasize this as well.

Blogger MELI. said ... (4:00 AM) :

love her body language.
their picture is very cute. I love the boots, very fluevogish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

I agree with ‘Anonymous’ (above): this photo is genius. The mirrored pose, the one-suit outfits, subtle color matches, the eyes...just brilliant. Works on so many levels, not least because of the background story. Wonderful. A real classic and an unforgettable image.
Many congratulations!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:36 AM) :

She's a regular on CobraSnake.com! She dates Shane West I think his name is?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:36 PM) :

I think that she can probably pull off any look she wants, and if you saw her in person you would probably go "wow..." or something like that....

And having said that, this is not my favorite outfit combo, but it also works in a strange way.

And to answer the question posted above, those are Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes '07. I have a pair that are deep burgundy and black patent leather. I love the buckles!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

I'm so glad you shot Spidey. I bet you made his day.

Oh, and...like the onesie, don't like the shoes. Regardless, the girl is beautiful. She could wear a potato sack and tissue boxes on her feet and still look gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:14 PM) :

lots of comments on her pose, the juxtaposition against spiderman, her shoes, etc... but, what strikes me the most is, simply, her beautiful face.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:13 AM) :

Agree with Monique, this woman looks horrendous in that get-up. Just goes to prove the old adage that "she could wear a trash bag and still look good", does not always hold for all beautiful people. Even the whole Spidy story does nothing for me. One of my least favourite posts Sart.

Is this the same Spiderman that hangs in front of the Chinese Theater? The short one with the beer gut and the sloppy Spidey shirt? I LOVE THAT GUY!
The only character that tops him is the anorexic Chewbacca with mange and a saggy crotch.
But if this is the Spidey I'm thinking of, man - you did him proud. He has NEVER looked better!

Oh, and she's fantastic and her shoes kick all ass.
*I swear I had that outfit in back in the early 80's. Got it at Contempo.*

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:13 AM) :

I actually like this outfit. The colours of the playsuit are kind of forlorn and despite what everyone else has said I think the hardness and coldness of the shoes complement this. The combination is very parisian chic and she looks almost early-mid 20th century. I bet if you saw her walking down the street, hands in pockets it would all come together. Her expression gives the impression she is her own person and lives life to have fun and that (and of course her incredible good looks) is what I think makes her able to pull it off.

The composition is great! They look like a superhero/crime-busting duo. Her being at the forefront makes her seem like the leader but spiderman's casual yet confident slightly slouched pose shows he isn't one to be bossed around and that he's just as important as her. They both look quirky and other-wordly so personally I love it (: . Sometime's you have to look beyond the surface and imagine the characters of the image brought to life.
