like a totally rad salem witch! this dress rules and i want one. i kind of wish she had been wearing lace up black boots but perhaps that would havebeen too literal?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:20 AM) :

I like the white coming out of the dress, gives it a bottom..
But the bag should have an other color, maybe grey.

What happend to the make over by the way?!?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:37 AM) :

WHERE CAN WE GET THAT DRESS?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:47 AM) :

This is a good example of how timeless, classic dressing doesn't have to be boring. I like how the white is confined to the bottom of her outfit, and the black is above: I would have never thought to do that, but it really works.

Blogger The Spicers said ... (9:51 AM) :

That is a beautiful fit!

Blogger cat minoki said ... (9:51 AM) :

100% love this! Exactly my style this summer.
+++
and yes, please let us know what happened to the make-over idea?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

hope she knows how good her legs are!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:37 AM) :

the wisp of white underdress!
perfect balance of color.
she should have her hair up.

Blogger Anne Corrons said ... (10:38 AM) :

Yes, perfect look to go to work!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

I agree the dress fits like a glove, but I'd like to see it without the cardiagan. I think the black on black is a little to sophmoric, she looks like she's headed to a gothic sock-hop.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:51 AM) :

The dress is indeed a perfect fit for her; the only thing I'd change is the cardigan. Black on black, I know, it's a New York favorite, but it makes great details difficult if not impossible to appreciate.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:54 AM) :

At last, real tailoring on a woman. That's what makes a little black dress really sing.

I don't like the bag color, though. Either a creamy white to match the petticoat and shoes, or a real contrast, maybe like her red lipstick. The brown is not contrasty enough nor matchy enough.

Blogger Sjätte said ... (10:55 AM) :

Looks like she's wearing a corset.

Blogger Jessica said ... (10:56 AM) :

I really like the bright lipstick as fashion accessory here. It works very well on her and doesn't feel forced at all.

Blogger Trin said ... (11:03 AM) :

i wish more dresses like this were available. so flattering. what a perfect length as well. seems sort of american take on french, or is that my imagination?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

This is perhaps one of the most perfect dresses I've seen in a long time. Without that little bit of petticoat it would have been elegantly lovely, but just a little bit boring. With that peek and the white shoes that bring it out - it's dynamite.

Blogger Kanani said ... (11:16 AM) :

I like the dress. Not so much the cardigan. Would like to see different shoes, upswept hair, and a cuff and a few bracelets on her left arm.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:18 AM) :

This outfit is enough to take the stigma out of white shoes for me! The touch of white at the hem and white shoes take this from seasonless dressing to summer dressing. I think the bag is perfect.. not matchy black, but it doesn't distract from the charm of the white on white. She floats along the street now, instead of letting the black ground her.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:20 AM) :

gorgeous legs

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 AM) :

that woman has some fierce eyebrows, too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:37 AM) :

Tailoring is coming back in knitwear and it's great to see a crossover to the dress. I'm for a switch on the bag and a change to the cardigan, maybe just some white embroidery at the cuffs and up the button band to match the underskirt. I hope she never loses that perfect smirk.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

she looks so comfortable and confident.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

I hope she knows how good her feet are as well!

Love the cardigan too.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (12:11 PM) :

Beautiful dress! So easy to wear!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 PM) :

So, after seeing work dress one and two, I have a question: Do they NEED to be black and retro looking?

Blogger Michele said ... (12:28 PM) :

It looks beautiful but the white on bottom... kind of looks messy, like her slip is showing for something

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:36 PM) :

love this look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 PM) :

the dress looks incredible, would love to see it without the cardigan!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 PM) :

Am I the only one who sees a black void? My monitor just shows black. Cannot see any fit or details. It's just too dark.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:03 PM) :

agree with jessica
i like that she left her shoes neutral and added the pop of colour with lipstick

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:21 PM) :

Is there a chance the dress could be Navy ? Hence the brown bag. She seems to know what she's doing. Italian classic. Maybe ?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:58 PM) :

Absolutely stunning. The fit is perfect. She is workin that red lipstick as well! The only thing is the bag... I really don't care for the brown..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 PM) :

She looks good!
Red lipstick and white shoes works perfectly.
Not sure about the white slip however. I cannot decide whether this is a sign of good style or whether she just looks messy.
Incidentally, I've been looking for a black day dress and just purchased an Acne one. My mother is a strong believer of perfect black day dresses and she put me in so many of them- so I sort of have a nostalgic attachment to them. They always work!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

LOVE the lipsticked smirk. this girl knows she put together something great. (i would lose the cardie and put the hair up for the full effect, but i also kind of like that she's making us look for the genius details in her outfit and not framing them easily & perfectly.)

Blogger Mark F said ... (3:30 PM) :

Perfect length on her. To reiterate a previous comment, her legs look great. However the bag must go.

Blogger Anthony said ... (3:51 PM) :

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you've put up two posts in the past week with Van Cleef & Arpels in the backgrounds.

Have I discovered your new favorite photo spot?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

outfits like that make me wish i worked in an office. lovely.

Blogger suzannemarques said ... (4:37 PM) :

i love the tailoring and the underskirt peeking out. i used to be against black and brown & now i love it together. i like her bag.

i noticed the hair band on her wrist. i do that all the time. so she does wear her hair up when she likes :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:48 PM) :

i have a dress just like this. i bought it for $34 at Target - designed by Isaac Mizrahi. I get lots of compliments on it and it fits beautifully. pleats, just like this dress. hey, maybe hers is from Target too!

Blogger Coryn said ... (4:52 PM) :

Beautiful! I love the shoes in contrast with the dress. The lipstick also looks great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:54 PM) :

looks like Bottega Veneta's Julie bag...excellent choice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:15 PM) :

love the shape, but i wish it were a more spring color. the simple neutral shoes are a perfect addition!

Blogger Nadine said ... (5:16 PM) :

Love it. Love the cardi, love the shoes, extra-specially love the underskirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:16 PM) :

come to cambridge uk....come to cambridge for the clothes......
i am being so hotly subliminal here

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:25 PM) :

Hi Scott McHott
Did you know? Brick Lane and its side streets in London is phenomenally cultural and full of adventurous outfits. What a mix! You have Bangladeshi men selling bunches of peacock feathers, fashion students in neon tights and tutus with Cyndi Lauper washer-woman rags on their heads, funky rasta musicians, 80s fluorescent jackets and rainbow shutter shades, afros, jazz bands on the street, gruff old english pirates and dainty girls with accessory-size dogs...
Please visit there and immortalise it with your lens! The Spitalfield markets there has fresh young designers selling on Wednesdays.
Hope you have a great trip.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:07 PM) :

Nice and conservative. Way to go

Blogger amychristina said ... (7:17 PM) :

L O V E the dress! a well tailored woman - fabulous :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:47 PM) :

*Sigh!*

Gorgeous, smart, sexy. I'm in love!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 PM) :

Hot pink lipstick with an otherwise conservative outfit--Awesome!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 AM) :

Most if it was said before: what a perfect fit of the dress, lover her gorgeous legs, would leave the cardigan or pick different color, same for the bag, love the shoes though, lipstick and hair style are absolutely perfect the way they are.

Blogger Roxana Farahmand said ... (1:37 AM) :

I LOVE the white at the bottom of the dress. I have always wanted to do that but could never find a dress to do it with.
Lovely photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:18 AM) :

It fits her perfectly, but it's a fit funereal.

Blogger Tina said ... (5:07 AM) :

nice

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:17 AM) :

Love the fit of the dress, the underskirt and the shoes... black on top and white at the bottom. I think she should lose the cardigan though, as it is disguising the fitted shape of the dress underneath. You have to look hard, even at the enlarged version, to see how it fits her so well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:24 AM) :

red lips and a wry smile
-my all time favourite accessories!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

Oh dear. At the risk of crashing the party, I'm going to say that I don't think this dress is right at all. The idea is lovely, but it falls at an awful place on her legs (just below the knee), so she looks stumpy. The neck line is also entirely unflattering to what seems to be a perfectly nice shoulder/neck area. The dress is sweet, but I just don't think that it flatters the female body.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 AM) :

The fuschia lipstick (NOT red) totally rocks her look.

Blogger spring flowers said ... (10:35 AM) :

I don't like her hair. Maybe she could try something more updated. If she's a young professional, then I think this haircut ages her a little.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:04 PM) :

Damn. Draw a pentagram on my back, baby. Get yo witch on!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 AM) :

she totally beats the two women above her when comes to wearing black & white best.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:38 AM) :

Love this fifties style dress...its definately theperfect fit which reallu makes the outfit...love the white shoes and petticoat...maybe a white cardigan/jacket would lift the look a little for spring? but its fabulous as is!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

I am pretty sure her dress is navy...
the cardigan is a slightly darker navy. Brown, navy and white- someone up there said it right- classic- Molto Italiano!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:33 AM) :

you can't get the dress anymore, it's really, really old theory. It does make your waist look tiny, but it is not at all a summer dress -- it's made of some serious wool! You can kind of tell if you click on the image, from the way the skirt hangs...but since it hasn't been too nice out lately, it makes sense. I like the way that she doesn't have bangs with that cut, even though it looks like they should be there...

Blogger scormeny said ... (11:30 AM) :

excellent, excellent attitude and great lipstick.

But tailoring mavens, darts need to point AT the bust apex, not soar above it like they're aspiring to throttle her. This dress begs for a different foundation garment that pushes her bustline higher, or should have better-placed darts for her shape. For RTW it's acceptable, I guess, but if it's custom-made she needs to find a better tailor.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:44 AM) :

scormeny - yes, so correct. i was a professional tailor and costumer and I specialized in 40's - 60's clothing, and I can tell you that the secret to looking good in women's vintage or vintage-ish clothing is to wear the right foundation garment. Darts are feisty and there are rules to wearing them. I still think she looks great though, but it's just by accident that the dress fits her so well.

Blogger New Found Lust said ... (5:35 AM) :

Timelessly chic, versatile and easy to style...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:10 PM) :

It's so nice to see a waistline that isn't cropped right below the bust or dropped two inches below the hips... and the darts keep the shape from getting too boxy. And the skirt is slim.

It could have been frumpy little-miss-muppet, but it's sleek and gorgeous instead.

Blogger ramona west said ... (12:31 PM) :

i love the white peeking out from the hem and the white shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

I love, love, LOVE this outfit. On the whole it has a certain modern fifties air about it (that dress, that lipstick). Another thing I love is the 3/4 sleeve of the vest, it ads a more youthfull touch to the outfit. This for me is real stylishness.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:35 PM) :

The white peeking out is soooo naughty.

Blogger amy said ... (10:11 AM) :

she looks GREAT! fit at the waist and skirt fullness divine. i actually just said divine, but it is. love the white at the hem. shoe color in plum better? yellow? teal? don't love the white.

Blogger Pleasant Village Community Garden said ... (7:56 PM) :

Finally, a well-dressed gal!

Blogger Saucy said ... (2:36 PM) :

Yes! That one has to be seen close-up and one is not disappointed at all. Well done, lady. Well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:37 PM) :

the best thing about the look is the expression on her face!

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:07 PM) :

I like that this shows off just enough of her legs to let us see how great they are while covering just enough to make the look appropriate for work as well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:50 PM) :

So Mad Men.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:26 PM) :

I think that it's pretty, and I really like the idea of dresses that can be worn to work, with a cardigan and a pair of flats, and out afterward, with a pair of heals.
