This is a good example of how timeless, classic dressing doesn't have to be boring. I like how the white is confined to the bottom of her outfit, and the black is above: I would have never thought to do that, but it really works.

I agree the dress fits like a glove, but I'd like to see it without the cardiagan. I think the black on black is a little to sophmoric, she looks like she's headed to a gothic sock-hop.
The dress is indeed a perfect fit for her; the only thing I'd change is the cardigan. Black on black, I know, it's a New York favorite, but it makes great details difficult if not impossible to appreciate.
At last, real tailoring on a woman. That's what makes a little black dress really sing.
I don't like the bag color, though. Either a creamy white to match the petticoat and shoes, or a real contrast, maybe like her red lipstick. The brown is not contrasty enough nor matchy enough.
Looks like she's wearing a corset.
I really like the bright lipstick as fashion accessory here. It works very well on her and doesn't feel forced at all.
i wish more dresses like this were available. so flattering. what a perfect length as well. seems sort of american take on french, or is that my imagination?
This is perhaps one of the most perfect dresses I've seen in a long time. Without that little bit of petticoat it would have been elegantly lovely, but just a little bit boring. With that peek and the white shoes that bring it out - it's dynamite.
I like the dress. Not so much the cardigan. Would like to see different shoes, upswept hair, and a cuff and a few bracelets on her left arm.
This outfit is enough to take the stigma out of white shoes for me! The touch of white at the hem and white shoes take this from seasonless dressing to summer dressing. I think the bag is perfect.. not matchy black, but it doesn't distract from the charm of the white on white. She floats along the street now, instead of letting the black ground her.

Tailoring is coming back in knitwear and it's great to see a crossover to the dress. I'm for a switch on the bag and a change to the cardigan, maybe just some white embroidery at the cuffs and up the button band to match the underskirt. I hope she never loses that perfect smirk.

Incidentally, I've been looking for a black day dress and just purchased an Acne one. My mother is a strong believer of perfect black day dresses and she put me in so many of them- so I sort of have a nostalgic attachment to them. They always work!

i have a dress just like this. i bought it for $34 at Target - designed by Isaac Mizrahi. I get lots of compliments on it and it fits beautifully. pleats, just like this dress. hey, maybe hers is from Target too!

Did you know? Brick Lane and its side streets in London is phenomenally cultural and full of adventurous outfits. What a mix! You have Bangladeshi men selling bunches of peacock feathers, fashion students in neon tights and tutus with Cyndi Lauper washer-woman rags on their heads, funky rasta musicians, 80s fluorescent jackets and rainbow shutter shades, afros, jazz bands on the street, gruff old english pirates and dainty girls with accessory-size dogs...
Please visit there and immortalise it with your lens! The Spitalfield markets there has fresh young designers selling on Wednesdays.

Most if it was said before: what a perfect fit of the dress, lover her gorgeous legs, would leave the cardigan or pick different color, same for the bag, love the shoes though, lipstick and hair style are absolutely perfect the way they are.
I LOVE the white at the bottom of the dress. I have always wanted to do that but could never find a dress to do it with.

Love the fit of the dress, the underskirt and the shoes... black on top and white at the bottom. I think she should lose the cardigan though, as it is disguising the fitted shape of the dress underneath. You have to look hard, even at the enlarged version, to see how it fits her so well.

Oh dear. At the risk of crashing the party, I'm going to say that I don't think this dress is right at all. The idea is lovely, but it falls at an awful place on her legs (just below the knee), so she looks stumpy. The neck line is also entirely unflattering to what seems to be a perfectly nice shoulder/neck area. The dress is sweet, but I just don't think that it flatters the female body.
The fuschia lipstick (NOT red) totally rocks her look.
I don't like her hair. Maybe she could try something more updated. If she's a young professional, then I think this haircut ages her a little.

the cardigan is a slightly darker navy. Brown, navy and white- someone up there said it right- classic- Molto Italiano!
you can't get the dress anymore, it's really, really old theory. It does make your waist look tiny, but it is not at all a summer dress -- it's made of some serious wool! You can kind of tell if you click on the image, from the way the skirt hangs...but since it hasn't been too nice out lately, it makes sense. I like the way that she doesn't have bangs with that cut, even though it looks like they should be there...

But tailoring mavens, darts need to point AT the bust apex, not soar above it like they're aspiring to throttle her. This dress begs for a different foundation garment that pushes her bustline higher, or should have better-placed darts for her shape. For RTW it's acceptable, I guess, but if it's custom-made she needs to find a better tailor.
scormeny - yes, so correct. i was a professional tailor and costumer and I specialized in 40's - 60's clothing, and I can tell you that the secret to looking good in women's vintage or vintage-ish clothing is to wear the right foundation garment. Darts are feisty and there are rules to wearing them. I still think she looks great though, but it's just by accident that the dress fits her so well.

It's so nice to see a waistline that isn't cropped right below the bust or dropped two inches below the hips... and the darts keep the shape from getting too boxy. And the skirt is slim.
It could have been frumpy little-miss-muppet, but it's sleek and gorgeous instead.

I love, love, LOVE this outfit. On the whole it has a certain modern fifties air about it (that dress, that lipstick). Another thing I love is the 3/4 sleeve of the vest, it ads a more youthfull touch to the outfit. This for me is real stylishness.
