Comments on "At Hyeres 2008......On the Steps, South of France"
I love the look, but not so much the outfit. For me, the shoulders are just a tad too strong, the skirt a tad too short, the socks a tad too high. But her hair is great.
You!
Are total genius!
Love Your Work!
Love It!
I love with the masculine shapes mixed with the feminine pieces. The shoulder pads and rolled up sleeves give a masculine feel to the outfit, but the short skirt and boots (with those socks) make for a sexy, feminine contrast.
I don't think the all-black would work if it wasn't for her blonde hair, which ties all the elements of the outfit in quite nicely.
LOVE it.
Interesting look, nice blouse and I love that piece of white in her sleeves. But, this kind of outfit doen't seem to work for a place like Hyeres; I'm not sure if I like this contrast or not.
Too boxy
Ooh it looks painful walking down those stairs in those heels. But yeah she looks great :)
Very Chloe Sevigny - I love it!
For some reason this just doesn't look like it's come naturally. She looks like she's really trying. And that is what makes it less than fantastic.
beautiful!! looks faboulous...
Hmm, I don't think this is quite working. Nice pieces, but not necessarily together. Actually, it is the blouse that bothers me most.
On top of that, this outfit unfortunately doesn't work on this woman. It makes her look uncomfortable and contrived.
mmm those boots and those steps..but hey, who said that about suffering to be beautiful????
It's a gorgeous outfit from an aesthetic viewpoint, but it looks terribly uncomfortable to wear that skirt. It seems like it would hike up and show her underwear as soon as she sits!
(Everything else is perfect, though)
Sexy. Individual. Love it.
I must say I like it. Reminds me of me in the autumn. The bag is Balenciaga, I think? And her shoulders.. :D
That is what really makes personal style. Again I shall say, I like it, no. I love it.
I love her hair style, this will be my new summer look! Pure Romance.
she reminds me of Chloe Sevigny a bit...love the outfit!
The inverted "V" in her skirt really helps make her legs look a mile long. And I love that you can see the back is longer, too.
i think it would look better without the jacket.
So sexy... I just became a lesbian for a couple of minutes
If her objective was to turn herself into a square-shape between her neck and her upper thighs, she succeeded admirably.
She looks like a young woman who is being creative using what she has. Maybe she got some of the stuff secondhand?
Sart, can you take some pics of 40-plus year olds in Hyeres? Some of us older women need ideas too....
This look SHOULD be all wrong. The jacket could be called ill-fitting. The skirt could be called inappropriately-short. And wearing stiletto boots on unforgiving terrain could called maladroite. And the socks!
But put it all together, in THIS manner, on THIS girl, in THIS setting and...
She is killing it.
Keep them coming, Sartorialist.
Judging by the recent pictures, Sart can spot a great pair of legs from a mile (or two) away!
I agree with the first Anonymous, love the look but the outfit a tad too this or that. Wonderful background and lighting! And I love what ever it is she has done with her hair....
~ Miss Mary
i'm really into this look, everything from the boots to the rolled up sleeves to the hairstyle!
I love how she does her hair.
Hi Scott,
Your pictures are phenomenal! May I ask which camera you're using to capture all these beautiful moments?
I feel so inspired to go out and grab one to start clicking away!
She has a Chloe Sevigny look about her, doesn't she? I love her hair against the dark fabric, and her skirt and rolled sleeves!
love the hair, and the entire look is great. I'm just jealous she can wear those ankle boots and socks with that skirt and not make her legs look short! Not many people can pull that off.
Probably because I live in the desert, black just looks too hot (and I mean temperature-wise, not HOT!)to me in spring and summer.
Leslie
I think this (south of france set) must be my favorite series you've ever done.
I agree with Kya - not the ideal footwear for cobbled ground!
She's beautiful, but I don't think the outfit is special at all.
I love and hate this look.
She's beautiful, but her skirt is so short it makes me nervous!
Love the background more than her style
I think its strange everyone loved the layers of the more feminine woman in the cape because then its whimsical (but was actually awkward layering), but a more structured exaggeration erring on the masculine side looks 'contrived'?
I think she looks great, pulling off an interesting structural and textural play...the rolled up sleeves and socks give it a chic casualness. i always love a button down done up all the way!
She looks foreshortened to me. Like someone cut 6" out of her midsection. Not sure what gives this illusion. Is she leaning back?
Love it! Most people can not pull off boots with shorts, skirts, etc. +5454 for her.
Another cute girl again. Everything but the hemline makes sense. A longer dress would fit her better.
All the women at Hyeres are very very very ridiculously attractive. Note to self for same time next year: go to Hyeres.
That blog is a really good work !
It's nice to discover all those pictures page after page !
Nice work !
C.
Not loving this look. The outfit doesn't seem to suit her or the environment. I am not getting Chloe Sevigny from this so much as a bigger, prettier & healthier Olsen twin.
fabulous outfit..........can't help looking at the background, so cool!!!
K
ooh gorgeous. love it, love it. ideal look.
interesting hairstyle, but the look isn't stunning.
Ta daaah. Manages to not be goth.
It looked like she had a big black shirt and white underneath it on in the small picture, until I look closer. I agree with one comment, look and silhouette is great, not digging the style at all.
It's unfortunate look for a such a breezy looking place. All I can say is, at least she's trying to do something different than a breezy summer look.
update on the makeover!
you're a great professional, I love your work, congratulations!!!
I loved so much your blog! Gorgeous! I make the post about it in my blog.
Congratulations!
smooth and sexy. love the look.
perhaps the angle of the photo made the skirt look at tad short?
but nonetheless, its a good shot mr satorialist.
I love the whole look but i do not like the proportion of it. I t makes her top look wider.... Still loving it though!
I'm very surprised by this jacket and the blue one on the first woman in this south of france series. Am I wrong, or have they just borrowed jackets from men in their lives? The shoulders seem to suggest that.
I guess the romance with th 80's are still going strong?
I don't think that skirt is flattering her thighs much. But at least she's trying to be different. The hair mitigates the harshness of those shoulder pads though, I guess that's one good thing I can say about this outfit.
so simple
I love it
A cool parisian lost in the South of France...
Amazing. And the black goes well with the green background.
Often, dressing well is a matter of looking 'intentional.' Not in a defensive, "I meant to do that" way, but in an "I made choices when I put on my clothes this morning" way.
But it's possible to over-think it. The essence of style is *unconscious* intention - truly great style-makers have a way of looking like style comes naturally to them.
This outfit on this girl is a big shout of intention - so she's got that part right. But it's too much. Maybe if her shirt were not so meticulously ironed, or if her socks did not poke so perfectly out of her boots, or if she had chosen a better skirt, she could pull it off.
Nice to see an old jacket from the 1980's still has some life in it, though.
Beautiful backdrop - reminds me of an Agatha Christie's Murder under the sun and a Rousseau painting. Tres jolie!
I think she is a beautful lady so don't get me wrong here but the photo is a great example of how self understanding combined with fashion sense can allow you to transform yourself.
I think she is a very pretty young lady but the clothes she has selected transform her into a very exciting and sexy creature, not her normal look wearing "just anything". And she pulls it off without the least bit of banality
Very nice!
hey
I am not feeling great today but the sartorialist always makes me smile. I completely LOVE and admire your job but I specially like the way you talk to us (that kindness) May be that´s what I apreciate the most. Nice shoot, best wishes, nash
give me this outfitttt. its all perfect.
I don't understand. I live in the city, but I see women in ankle boots but rarely. You seem to find every woman anywhere who owns a pair of black ankle boots. What's that all about anyway?
Thank you for showing us the grand mistakes as well as the perfection. I love that this blog is about personal style. The people you choose to photograph are always trying something -- they are not simply following. I get what this girl is trying to do, though it isn't working as well in practice as is must have felt in theory. I know what it is like to wake up -- or go to sleep with -- a vision of a great ensemble only to put it on and find that it really fails. Black just doesn't feel fresh right now -- especially black separates. The jacket is too big for her, the shoulders too strong, and the rolled sleeves too Don Johnson. The hair is great, but would look better with a more feminine outfit. She seems to be trying to balance the bare legs with the booties using the socks, but they just wind up looking like one of those guys who wears his black socks with his white shoes. I don't have a problem with the skirt length. Good idea, bad execution.
P.S. Thank you for taking such good photographs.
She's lovely, but I don't like the trend for black in this lovely summery place. I guess these fashion-forward folks are anticipating the fall, but why be drab in such a lovely place?
Black looks always trendy!
The big jacket&rolled sleeves is retro done right. Excellent look for her.
I'm not loving the ankle boots/socks. They really cut off her legs and combined with the squareness of the silhouette, make her look a bit stocky. Interesting, though.
I don't really mind if a woman's legs aren't the best and I don't really mind if she displays her not-the-best legs but I do wish a woman with less-than-best legs would dress them to their greatest advantage. This is an abysmal effort and a profound disappointment.
She is gorgeous!!!
i wish you'd change the settings so when we click to enlarge a picture it would open in a different window.
everyone's making judgments about the look as a WHOLE -- i'm surprised more commenters didn't rave about that awesome "boyfriend" blazer.
slightly oversized, worn, and with rolled up sleeves -- so good!
i think this is an example of taking menswear a few steps overboard. she's a beautiful girl, but she's just drowning in the cut of this jacket. i love the socks with the heels, and the sleeves rolled up is a nice touch, but the soulders on the jacket should be a bit more tailored.
she's definitely going for a chloe sevigny look, but i think Miss S would have a slightly more fitted top, and maybe a shorter skirt.
I like to assess a look in what I feel the instant I see it. I saw a black square on a pair of legs that looked not particularly attractive. Now, I see that the problem lies in the skirt. Inverted V is OK if longer. At this length it is making the widest part of her legs look wider, and let's face it, a skirt pulled up and into the crotch is never attractive or classy. Make this edit, and you've got a look!
every week i go on post secret to check ouit the secrets and this week i saw this one and thought, "so do i".
i think you'll enjoy it.

Risqué cut on the skirt but good to see she's wearing panties.
Daring and superb.
Not loving this look. The blazer looks like she borrowed her boyfriend's because she was cold.
And is that a Balenciaga biker bag? Yawn.
This is what i think every morning when i choose an outfit:

you're so inspiring

Have you gone post secret today? Have you readers gone on it as well? Welll there is is a hreat postcard which shoes how influential you are. I guess if you pictures can speak words then the comment made would be what every viewer of your website will think when they get dressed.
So much for dressing for the other or same sex!!
Regards,
Anon from sydney
Sartorialist---you may want to head over to postsecret.com and take a look.
i think she looks butch and black?? its spring in south of france!! i cant think of anywhere thats more beautiful at this time of year and to wear black just kills it, but its a nice picture
Love the strong lines of this outfit. I *heart* the shoulder shape. Although I agree with the people who said the clothes kinda jar with the surroundings.
fyi--sartorialist was mentioned in post secret this week.
Wow, a textbook Stefano Pilati look. Cool stuff
i want to be there!
My first thought was: the Natasha Lyonne that never went off the deep end.
Hello Sartorialist!
I just wanted to let you know that there was a secret that mentioned you on PostSecret. It's not mine, but I wish it was.
very olsen the row, but she's trying too hard.
Go to www.postsecret.blogspot.com before Saturday. I don't know if you have ever read this site before, but it is great. There is something Sartorialist related on it this week!
wow i love this - mostly because its not just a trendy 'oversized' blazer - it is literally too big for her (the shoulders) and it looks fantastic. esp with the skirt - that hemline is awesome. and the blazer's visible lining! and the boots AND socks!
What an interesting hemline! Great shot.
p.s. have you seen this? from postsecret:

did you know you were on post secret?

i'm a big fan with all black.
tres chic.
Congrats on your blog, i've just been googling for the most influential bloggers of all time and your blog was well featured especially in the fashion industry and from the pictures i can see why!
I have looked at this over and over again and still don't like it. Separately the pieces are nice, but.... I guess, like the lady in Times Square, I just don't like the short black socks with short boots and short skirt (for one). I just keep thinking it looks like she forgot her pants.
Oh I love this - I like the masculinity of the shoulders on the blazer.
amazing outfit. sky high skirt looks good on her long slender legs. Can't say much about the shoes though.
i wanna BE this girl....
LOVELY OUTFIT...GREAT PIC!!!!
yes she looks cute, but the outfit is so contrived ive seen it a billion times in new york
I'm not CRAZY about this, but it still looks good. I really like the blzer and ankle boots. The skirt, however, does nothing to flatter this woman's legs.
tres chic
This outfit reminds me of YSL's first collections. His vision was to make women feel strong, sexy, and confident. She looks like all of those things
Arguably, this look has been around for a while, but I think it still has lots of charm!
She can do it because she's so pretty.
And also because she's found the right jacket. I hope to find one for myself before the look gets completely exhausted.
I love everything about her look. This is a look I can see the Olsen twins wearing one day.
The clothes are fine, they remind me of myself in 1985 - men's jackets, asymmetry, head to toe black, boots and bare legs, too-short skirts - and it's fun to see a new generation reinventing those ideas. But the clothes don't really matter, because really they're just a framing device for the legs and the hair. They're what we see first. She's very good at framing!
B
this is awesome!
first i thought it was one of the olsen twins
keep doing your thing girl !
She reminds me of Ludivine Sagnier. Don't hate, congratulate!
She is tremendously stylish. The hair style makes it so amazing altogether.
really nice outfit !!!
Amazing, amazing, amazing! The shoulder pads definitely make the outfit. I don't necessarily like the socks but she can definitely pull it of with those legs!
Very, very nice.
I love the hem on her skirt. I think if it were more bland the outfit wouldn't work. Don't like her hairstyle, considering she has such nice hair...it does fit the mood though.
To me, she seems to be channeling a bit of a down-played kate moss vibe. very sexy.
her style looks just like the olsen twins, right?
Lose the socks. I like the sleeves rolled up on the blazer. I would rather see a bright coloured bag instead of the black. I like the hair but it could look elegant up, especially if she has a long neck.
