Comments on "On the Street.... 16th & 3rd, NYC"
She reminds me of Naomi Campbell.. Tres chic!
flip flops? really, sart?
I read an interview with Mariuccia Mandelli today in Corriere della Sera in which she stated everyone should dress the way that makes them feel the best. This echos what I have read from Giorgio Armani. In a sense both scoff at traditional fashion worldview and say fashion is a form of personal expression so follow your intution and enjoy yourself.. In that spirit I would like to say that this young lady looks to have chosen exactly the look that she is comfortable in. Even the flip flops, which I generally would never think of wearing outside the beach, look just fine on her in the big city.
Has the Sartorialist succumbed to product placement!?
Just kidding, though this lovely girl will probably inspire a flock of admirers to H & M in search of that dress...
wow, the arch of the stoplight support in the background, and the shadow of the off-camera one on her in the foreground...
as white/tan sandal-addicted as i am, i'm wondering how this is
"NYC". Or is it intentionally subversive?
first*
She looks great!
I found it very difficult for Asian girls to have really nice style, unless they are in the US or Paris.
It's hard for us (me Asian) to look really STYLISH.
HOW?!
beautiful. very naomi campbell, without the anger issues.
Whoaaaaa. That's awesome. Man, you reeaall talented :D
She looks like Naomi Campbell
I like how simple and clean this looks. The tones on her are beautiful as well. It is also nice that it doesn't look like something that would be unobtainable (price or body limitations). I also really like how the bag somehow fits in. I have trouble wearing my over the shoulder bags with dresses without looking off.
Flip flops are *not* shoes! And they never, ever will look elegant.
Great photo as always: I love the mottled sunlight on her chest in particular.
The dress is not super-exciting, except for the hem perhaps, but you make her look great.
Gorgeous light! And for some reason I absolutely love the fact that she's carrying an H&M bag.
This is an interesting picture right after your last post. Completely simple and subtle versus bold and crazy. I think she looks pretty, but I'm not really all that excited about it. The white is beautiful on her skin. I kind of wish her hair was more interesting. Everything about this is soooo normal and pretty that I kind of wish there was something that made it interesting to me.
also I just don't think the hair/face/glasses all work well together. But the white/cream mix on her skin is gorgeous and I like the wide strap on the bag
This just makes long more and more for the lovely dress, bare legs, flipflops, sunglasses-weather to hit the Netherlands. *sigh* I'm still stuck with wearing my wintercoat and wool scarf.
Hi Sart, Just wondering, where is the photo off the girl who was suppose to get a make over from you? Would really love to see how things turn out for her
Stanley
Pretty girl-- terrible choice of footwear: flip-flops are bad enough, but beat-up, worn-out flip-flops are unforgivable.
BTW, at first glance, she looks like she's slightly leaning on a walking stick. Then on closer inspection, I realized that the "stick" is just an illusion created by the gap in the pavement!
--PLO
Does she holding a stick?
At first sight I thought she was a leaning on a cane, I thought she maybe was a blind girl!
Is it THAT warm in New York already??
She looks great, especially with the shadows!
Great Picture!
i live in vancouver where yesterday started off sunny. by the time i walked out of the coffee shop (~4:45pm), it was hailing. when i left my boyfriend's house (~11pm), it was snowing.
so, in short, this photo is like a dream to me : )
Finally,a little summer in the Air !!
enjoy the great weather,
at least for today.... :-)
yeah!!! looking forward!!
http://dimonolo.blogspot.com
Very pretty dress (the color is great for her skin), and I like the unconventional bag choice. The accessories are subtle but match nicely.
One major problem for me though...I HATE flip-flops! I feel like a better flat sandal would have really pulled this look together.
love the pretty casual look!!
K
Very beautiful light and mood. Is it really that warm in NYC right now? The style is just OK - the pockets in the dress are what we like best about it. Other than that it's a little by-the-numbers no?
looks like spring/summer has arrived in NYC. That little pocket on her dress adds a sweet touch.
nice to see summer's here
H&M!!!
She shows that it's all a matter of style over money.
A few nice accessories and she's ready to go!
Brava!
I think this girl is lovely, but I don't find her outfit to be anything extraordinary.
She looks nice! Scott, what about the pictures of Phoenix? We are all intrigued and impatient to see them. Would you be playing hard to get, now?
Now this is springtime beauty.
gorgeous!
Simple, clean, and lovely. Summer is on its way!
Is this an H&M ad?
Early morning light, superb.
Now this! This is gorgeousness. I love her hair, the sparing use of accessories, and the colour of her dress. It might have been love but for those icky flipflops.
Love! That cream color is perfect against her dark skin. Makes me wish summer was here already! :)
Finally - sundress season has arrived!
yikes. i'm first! is it really that warm in NYC? LA, this last week, was in the 90s and this would have been great, but i am finding it hard to believe it was warm where you are. is this wishful thinking on her part? did she have goosebumps?
regardless, the dress is very cute, i like the fullness of it, the suggestion of layers or a tissue thin fabric. i like that her purse, sunglasses and flip-flops are all in the same color range. the crack in the sidewalk - i thought it was a cane! until i looked at the bigger picture. nice shot. good to see a blue sky!
Wow, is it what warm in NYC?! I am jealous.
cute, simple, and very much in season
the most mediocre photo on the site
I cant believe its so warm in nyc now, its still so chilly here in London. =(
See, Sart, H&M again. You'll be converted eventually, everyone is. I don't know about NY branches but in the one opposite Harvey Nicks in London they have some better quality and cut jackets and suits - still at quite good prices.
I love it.
wicked sunnies, but i'll never be a fan of flip flops. especially chewed ones. love the overall look.
Just to point out how gorgeous, summery, and utterly un-New York-y she is. . .and to assure you that everyone didn't leave after the makeover post.
The color of the dress really suits her gorgeous skin. I'm not really into the flip-flops or the sunglasses, though.
Casual, breezy and lovely. I adore the accessories.
The haziness of the stoplight in the background is a wonderful photographic touch. Thanks, sarty!
is the dress also H&M??
nice pic.
salutes from argentine.
the bag is from H&M but the dress is not
Love the pockets and the way I imagine the dress moves, but I love most summer dresses so that's not a big step for me. Makes me wish I was back home instead of in gloomy London, though.
Summer in the City.
Old skool flip-flops are absolutely perfect for this look.
(and, I'm not a flip-flop fan)
-- desertwind
she looks really great...effortless...love the shades : )
enough with the flip flop bashing!
i know quite a few gorgeous innately stylish gods and goddesses who love their flip flops.
Oh my gosh...bad choice of footwear, i don't like flip flops for city outfit. "Hey i'm just back to the beach!".
i'd rather see flip flops than ill-proportioned boots over leggings all the time. not original. i'm glad she's wearing flip flops, also it suits the outfit perfectly. she has a wonderful light, easy look about her.
In New York, Love the dress hate the flip flops, Defenitly in Miami...
This would make a great advert form H&M.. wish it was warmer here already!
I can't believe that anyone would look at someone this chic and elegant and easy in her skin and go Oh but she is wearing flip flops!
If you don't know a perfect thing when you see it, well, you can fuss around with pocket squares for the rest of your life but you'll never ever get it right.
love the dress -
but flip flops are something for the beach, they do not make you look effortless.
really? all this fuss about flip flops? are we that cynical?
She looks great, and the photo is soo soothing (I can totally hear the hum of summer on a sunday afternoon). There is really nothing more you can ask for. kudos.
whats all this hatred towards flip flops??? they used to be my staple until flats became trendy. and maybe it's because i live on the gulf coast of florida, but seriously, flip flops ARE shoes.
and she looks effortlessly adorable and chic. love it.
Okay, being a college student, I like how this picture gives the message that good, clean, comfortable style is available to those with less cash in their pockets. HOWEVER, H&M might be a cheap road to fashion, but their clothes are of consistently shoddy quality. For the less wealthy, it would actually be much more cost-efficient to purchase clothes that are more expensive but last longer and are more timeless in style. H&M, though being accessible, is mass-produced and a cop-out of good, careful design.
she looks like she grabbed whatever was at hand and spent a leisurely saturday afternoon shopping.
stop hating on the flip flops. i love great shoes as much as anyone, but sometimes it's not about that. flips are practical and easy for walking and shopping.
and to all who keep commenting that she "needs" accessories...can't you peeps just enjoy a good photo once in a while? she looks great as is (imo of course).
I think the dress looks cute on her. The ruffles add a touch of whimsy to an otherwise humble dress.
Not too crazy about the dress. I've see this kind waaaay too often, and right now this style is flooding Forever 21 stores in an abundance of prints and colors. Ew! I wonder what her bag looks like though...
But on a happy note, I do sincerely adore the quality of this shot. Simply beautiful!
To all the people saying she looks like Naomi Campbell. Really? You know ONE black woman and you think everyone who is black and attractive looks like her? Really? Come on. It's 2008 we can do better than that. Not all black people look alike.
Nice shot, Sart! That shows that you may look cool without spending so much money! The flip flops are not so fashionable specially because they are so worn out but they are so comfortable that are the ideal pair for long walks in hot weather... it would be ridiculous wearing that dress with sneakers...
The white are the best colors for the black women.
Her skin is wow!!"
what people seem to be missing here is what sartorialist captured in this photograph-i.e., sometimes the parts add up to a greater sum. what sart captured here is not what this woman is wearing, but her ability to project herself and be comfortable in her own skin-the greatest accessory. it is not about labels in this case, but charisma holding everything together; each element might not be commes des garcon, but she is the element that bring it all together and makes it work, which is the essence of style. even the flip flops: what they do is provide her legs to stretch uninterrupted, in a natural way. it wouldn't necessarily work on everyone but she has the legs to pull it off.
Is this what the weather's like in new york?! I'm so jealous
When you've got such beautiful skin, you don't need much else. Sure, there's nothing exceptional about any of these pieces--but together on HER, it's great.
She looks effortlessly beautiful. One thing I can't understand is how almost every sundress has an empire-waist or is cut off at the bust. The dress would be so chic if it came in at the natural waist.
Dressing for the weather!
Today in Boston it was sunny with a sea breeze. All the tourists in town for the Marathon on Monday were wearing what maybe is acceptable in Atlanta or Houston in April, but clearly freezing to death on a deceptively sunny day.
My pet peeve: people who jump the gun and don't dress for the weather. And the distressing fact that many shops have summer gear in February, right about when you need to recharge the winter wardrobe. Was it really warm enough for "Naomi " to be so summery?
I just don't like this one. It seems to me that sometimes you just find skinny girls in plain clothes and snap their photos. I'd kill for you to start caring about the curvier girls as well.
I'm afraid I'm joining the voices decrying the flipflops. Such a pity, as the rest of the composition of this beautiful girl is perfect. I believe I have not made any adverse comments to date, as I find so much that is inspirational, unique, and expressive in the clothing choices I view on these pages - but those things on anyone's feet (anytime, anyplace) are grotesque.
I think she looks adorable. All the huff about the flip flops gives me a chuckle. Get used to it. Beach style has taken over casual wear. I live in Southern Califiornia and we wear flip flops to work on Fridays at times. Its not a statement..its comfort and she has managed to look comfortable and adorable at the same time. Not exciting but cute.
www.britnlindsews.blogspot.com
lots of people dress like this australia.
all year round mind you.
i love it.
Beautiful shot, beautiful girl in her cream dress and flip flops are good for serious comfort when shopping. She does look like Naomi Campbell, she has that effortless cool.
fresh. boho chic. she pulls off the simplicity so nicely.
This young lady doesn't look anything like Naomi Campbell. The only thing they have in common is that they are both black. Look beyond the color.
I believe this dress is from Levi's. I almost bought it at the flagship store in San Francisco a few months ago. :) Her outfit is very California.
OMG! Enough with the beating up of the flipflops... As die hard New Yorker and a die hard Reef wearer I think flip flops just scream "nice weather" and make my feet happy. People don't walk out of the house thinking "today I am going to pose for a photo" - they think of standing in the subways, uneven pavements, and a whole winter of being stuck in boots. You are all just jealous of the weather.
i love her bag's shoulder strap and her sunglasses. i don't even mind the flip-flops. this outfit seems better suited to summer than spring, though.
beautiful
She doesn't look like Naomi at all!
And what's all this about flip flops? As long as they go well with the clothing and the person feels comfy with'em, they're just fine. Besides, this girl looks beautiful as is.
Why so many comments about the color of her skin?
She is beautiful, hot, attractive and ridiculously stylish.
See? Did i say what race she is? No.
Do you mention other blond actresses/models when you see blonde women on this blog? No, you don't. So why compare this woman to Naomi Campbell? Wrong, wrong, wrong.
SHE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE NAOMI. STOP IT PEOPLE
Anonymous 8:59
I so agree. I don't understand why everyone hates thongs (flip-flops). In the right place, with the right outfit (like in the photo) they're fine. It's making me miss our beautiful Australian summers...
The obnoxious sunglasses ruin what is otherwise a great look, IMO
beautiful!
oh gosh i love this pic. the colors. the light. the green light. the comfy dress. the h&m bag. it all makes such a perfect blend. complimenti..!
I really like the sun glasses.
I think Sart is showing us elements that an everyday woman wears in the right mannequin.
Love the light in the picture and the attitude ! The outfit is simple and pretty. I'am jalous of the weather though, I am in Finland for a couple of months and I am afraid the flipflop will have to wait here ...
awh, lovely!
Sorry folks, but flip-flops are not shoes. They might be footwear, but not shoes. Shoes should flatter the foot and the leg. Sadly these do neither.
Flip-flops are for the beach or the shower room.
There is nothing mildly sartorial about this look. Sorry but it has to be said.
Is it really that warm in NYC?
Lovely dress though.
I like the pockets in the dress. But flip flops should be reserved for home.
i can't believe it's THAT warm in nyc right now. it's making me jealous!
omg! I thought she was blind, that fissure looks like a stick in her hand... i'm glad its not true. she is nice as a cat.
Stop talking about warm US zones to compare the fashion code to location. This girl personifies Bondi Chic, or as we know it it Sydney - Bondi Chick!!!
Greetings from Sydney Sart - we would love to have you here!!!
Yeah, she really looks like Naomi Campbell..beautiful =)
Its not a look I would expect to see often in NYC especially in April but it was in the 70's here yesterday (Cape Cod).
We are a beach area and so see flip flops with even dressier sun dresses here (the Cape is not known for its good fashion, thats for sure) but the only think I don't really like about them is I can NOT imagine walking all over NYC in them, by the end of the day your feet would be filthy (and I need to keep my feet immaculate).
All in all its a simple look that is fantastic on here. I want to add I don't think she looks anything like Naomi.
yes people dress like this in australia because they have no sense of fashion whatsoever. i once saw on a magazine cover a man wearing flip flops with a suit... disgusting
Apart fromt the picture being great, it's just a girl in a summer dress, it's nothing remarkable.
RE New York Weather -
Like many people, on the first day the temperature climbs above 70 (fahrenheit) many New Yorkers pull out the shorts and tank tops - or as here, the sundress. We "rush the season", and for a couple of days we could. (But be sure to have a sweater or jacket when the sun goes down.) Today (Sunday) we're back at cloudy and 50, a reminder that April is, if not the crueles month, an unpredictable one.
wow. love that dress! sweet and innocent. :)
i love the flip flops!
Havaianas rule! unfortunately not everyone gets it.
I don't see the Naomi Campbell comparison at all, other than skin color. She's obviously pretty, and the photo is lovely, but I don't see anything remarkable about her outfit. And I have to join the flip flop haters...why not just a simple flat sandal?
I love this picture. It's very much like spring to me- leaning toward summer in fact. I love her relaxed expression, the simple white (cream?) bangle and the strap of her bag crossing her chest, even her relaxed flip flops. She looks effortlessly cool and 100% comfortable to me.
great background, sart, but questionable taste otherwise.
Fresh and simple! The light, the shadows, her positioning, the colors, she's picture perfect!
Green means GO!
She does not look like Naomi Campbell. What's wrong with flip-flops? I like this photo not because of the outfit (though the dress looks great on her), but because of the mood and sense of place that the shadows, sunlight, restaurant sign, delivery bicycle (is that what's on her left?) and two green dots from the traffic lights convey. What a great New York feeling!
yes, it is a simple, yet beautiful look, to me, it looks like an Old Navy advertisment. the H&M bag is what people will remember in this picture, not the photograph. sorry, but this is not my favorite of yours.
Simple outfit, worn with grace. Fantastic!
Yeah, yeah, I have to join the chorus against the flip flops! I object to the flip flops not just in this outfit, but in a general way. They are gross. They are lazy dressing. They are dirty. And I don't want to see your feet, even if they are nicely manicured. I can't stand listening to sound of them flip flopping, either. I understand the general point that you were trying to make with this picture, but I would hope not to see people pictured wearing these yucky "shoes" as stylish people. Flip flops show an absence of style, exept in the pool shower.
As I recall, New York was packed with chic women in flip-flops last summer as well. With the right clothes, they convey a kind of effortlessness that no other shoe really can.
I think she looks good. That look is something you would see here in Buenos Aires for sure.
It looks like a comfortable outfit.
ps. I don't think the flip flops do any harm to the outfit. Either that or some other fancier flip flops would look all right.
the line of the sidewalk connects to the line of her arm and is really distracting for me. and makes her look like she's holding a stick or a cane. which really threw me off guard when i first saw it haha.
So simple...yet so clever. The flip flops remind me that you don't need to have kick ass blindingly shiny items to pull out a fashion statement. And did I mentioned how I just loooooove the way the hem of that dress is on her? BTW I am not a H&M fan but I'll admit this is cool.
wow, i had no idea people hated flip flops so much! i love them, but do have to say i would think twice about wearing them in a city as dirty as new york. the bottom of your feet would be disgusting by the end of the day! she is certainly beautiful in a casual and lighthearted way... but does she look like naomi campbell? well she does have brown skin and long black hair, but so do millions of other black women out there. i am constantly being told that i look like macy gray only because I have an afro! do all skinny blonde white girls look like scarlett johanson? think about it.
the brilliance of this look is in the neutral color palette and the simple lines. also, her shades are quite unique- especially the details on the frames.
sart, the lighting is outstanding. adds another layer of interesting shapes. well done.
I have that dress! :) It's actually by Swedish brand Indiska, for those who asked:)
Hey I love balenciaga,
It happens all the time, though: "She looks like Madonna", "She reminds me of Kirsten Dunst", "Chanelling Marcello" etc, etc... Maybe, just maybe, you're a bit too sensitive. Besides, this girl does look like a younger and sweeter version of Naomi Campbell (a compliment anyway): Same figure, same hairdo. Ignoring it for fear of offending someone would be reverse racism, I think.
she has a gorgeous skin color! you can see that very well through the patches of shadow and light.
and what better way to celebrate summer coming than with flip flops?
ok, it was a little squicky to read so many people's comments about how she looks like naomi. she doesn't appear to actually look like her, and one might balk that people are choosing the one woman of color they can identify, with whom to compare her.
BUT.. naomi has a signature hairstyle and signature sunglasses style, and the girl's basic facial proportions are relatively similar to naomi's. i think we could all agree that if we saw a woman with a crisp, banged, honey-colored bob and large, face-obscuring sunglasses that people might also respond with knee-jerk comparisons to ms. wintour, even if the actual resembelance wasn't particularly uncanny.
and to whomever said that shoes have to flatter one's feet to be considered actual footwear, that's a rather bizarre- and subjective- distinction to make. if that's the benchmark, then i officially declare uggs as un-shoelike. super-pointy-toed shoes don't particularly flatter feet (feet aren't naturally shaped anything like a classic pump), but they're flattering in that they make one's legs look longer. and they certainly don't flatter feet over years of wear. have you ever seen bunions? frightening.
would the flipflops be better if they had a suede sole and a braided leather strap? they'd still be flipflops. how about reexamining what's considered attractive, and recognizing what's natural. sure, i personally wear heels, but women aren't built to walk on tiptoes constantly. i think flat sandals are plenty flattering on a nicely-pedicured foot.
k
"People don't walk out of the house thinking "today I am going to pose for a photo" - they think of standing in the subways, uneven pavements, and a whole winter of being stuck in boots."
Uhh, that's exactly why I DO NOT wear flipflops. Leaving nothing but a slim piece of rubber between your foot and the filthy subway and brutal pavement below does not appeal to me. I cringe every time I see the nasty soles of flipflop wearers' feet, particularly in the city. Sooo gross.
I normally hate the kind of dress this young woman is wearing but it looks sweet on her. I love the hem and the contrast against her skin. Would've looked a lot better with a nice sandal though. I also love the shadows in this picture.
Hmm, Mr. Schuman I would be interested in hearing the exact features you like about this outfit. For me it is the contrast with the dress and the skin tone, absolutely beautiful.
if she was in some mediterranean countrys, like Portugal, it was normal for me see this girl, but in n.y. isn´t!
i guess that you Sart only had taked this photo because its in n.y. and its not usual..
"its nothing remarkable"´but wonderful model tough
The Jackie-Os are my favorite part of this look. The dress is feminine and flattering making this a wonderful prelude to summer.
To those who deride flip-flops, what is your opinion about sandals, then?
i love the white against her dark skin.
her dress looks like it's from the gap.
if i wore that cream dress, i would be tempted to add lots of colorful accessories. but she did an amazing monochromatic look. i love it. sunglasses, pruse, bracelet, flip-flops, all beige. it's perfect. and, for those folks who say flip flops are not for the city. honestly? i may have only lived in new york for five years, but summers were FILLED with flip flops - they make sense in the heat and humidity. and they are comfortable when you run down subway stairs.
People are commenting on the color of her skin because it is a beautiful contrast against the white dress. They are in no way saying anything negative about her being black. Stop being so sensitive.
she looks nice and all but.. how is it special or different or even worth reporting, but great shot the light, the colrs wonderful.
to an asian girl that said it's very difficul for them to look good: i think its actually easier for you to look stylish, becuase of your body shape ( i mean most of you) and face features i think clothes look much more tasteful and interesting, it's not the same thing to see an american girl in black jeans and an asian girl in them, for example. its just a matter of taste
sweet. i love it. her h&m bag completes it all.
i think this would make an amazing H&M ad ...... totally love it
HAHAHA. Uhm. I'm pretty sure I have that dress. And. I bought it a year ago from target. It's a lovely little thing though, especially on her.
Well, it is most likely a different dress. BUT. Just thought I would mention the intense similarity...
The flipflop bashintg is ridiculous. What makes this look is the innocence and "ingenue" feel it generates. The purity of the white combined to the fact that she can probably count the number of clothing items on the fingers of one hand, and that's including sunglasses, bags and bangle!
I think she looks wonderfully fresh and sexy.
sorry sart not even the romantic sunlight can persuade me to like this outfit.
flip flops don't work for me here... even if it has to be flip flops, there are way better ones to choose from...
I know this is NYC, but if you live in a beach city, flip-flops are perfectly acceptable footwear. (Obviously not for formal/professional environments)
Get over your toe phobias :P
Thought she was holding a cane but realised it was the crack in the pavement...
She looks very cool especially as she shops in H&M!
You New Yorkers are so lucky to have such great weather to wear Summer dresses.
sublime the class....gorgeous...
"Sorry folks, but flip-flops are not shoes."
really? how are they not? it's sad that just because you are in nyc you're expected to wear boots all the time. also, i cannot see how they can be called grotesque, as they do show off the beauty of the foot rather than cover it up. also there is no rule to when are where you should wear certain shoes. i'm glad sartorialist shot this lady, because apparently wearing flip flops is unique in new york. also..imagine her in any other kind of shoes..it would almost be too much as her look is simple and minimal
Flip flops is iconic to Australia because of its beach culture. Beach wear is the staple in Singapore because of the hot climate. This works for me, and I like the way her sunglasses is sitting right underneath her fringe. Nothing wrong with flip flops in this context.
I was greatly impressed with the cross-socio economic appeal of the flip flop in Rio. Absolutely everybody wears them. Bums wore them, rich folk, even workers on construction sites...
Hello Elise,
Of course there are rules about where to wear certain shoes. Some people actually even still care about them. Flip-flops are for the beach or the shower room. Certainly not for walking around downtown. Sandals would have been different. Unfortunately, many people do not follow rules anymore and hence never graduate into dressing like adults. I like the sunglasses - the "Jackie-Os" - but I can't imagine Jackie walking around downtown in flip-flops.
for Anon 10:01am
when I was a stay-at-home dad I always wore flip-flops when I was taking my kids to the park and I felt very much like a grown-up and still very stylish.
if you have ever poured half of a sandpit out of your shoe and your kids shoe when returning from the park you will understand the very real need for flip-flops in the city.
what this comes down to is that every lifestyle seems to have its own "rules" and there are a lot of different lifestyle in this big city.
Sart,
Thank you for your comment. This is probably a difference in age, generations, etc. When I was growing up in the city, I remember going to the park with my father and he never wore flip-flops. My father might have worn Purcell's and odd grey trousers with turn ups to the park, but flip-flops were reserved for the beach or the locker room at summer camp or the club. They are just not stylish or sartorial. They were probably never seen in the city on Grant, Cooper, Astaire, Agnelli or the Duke of W., all men who were living examples of Sartorialists.
Sand in your shoes does sound unpleasant. Hope that they weren't benchmade. Cheers for the discussion.
What I love about this outfit is that it really plays up her beauty, and allows her best features to shine. The dress shows off her square shoulders and slender legs. The haircut and shades work with her angular face.
Sart 10:24 am.
My man! Well said.
Summer??? Déjà???
I have nothing against flip flops as an option - BUT running in them, anywhere, especially on a city street or up and down subway stairs, is a risky proposition. Strolling through the neighborhood or to the park? No big deal. A day traversing the city or out to dinner? Choose something with more support in the one case, something less basic in the other.
Feet do a tremendous amount of work - be good to them, or at about 50 yrs you'll find that while the rest of you wants to keep kicking another 30 years, your poor trotters are going on strike.
Jeez! Flip-flops are the new makeover!
People who hate flip-flops must be really unhappy because they're everywhere and they're probably here to stay. These people, had they lived in the decades they like to refer to (Jackie O? Please, the sixties are long gone), would probably have cried over women wearing paints or about the blue jeans on everyone. There's a new century just starting, people, how about a new set of "rules", should we need any.
Even Ralph Lauren dresses his sales men in suits and flip-flops, and it looks really fresh and modern.
Fashion changes--that's one of the phenomenal things about it. What may have used to be against "the rules" is not necessarily taboo any more. How do things become this way? Generally because people think outside the box, and wear things many people wouldn't even consider.
She looks like a walking advertisement for H&M as everything she's wearing could have been taken out of their spring/summer catalog.
THis is why I love new yorkers. All freaked out over a pair of flip flops. She looks gorgeous—in a simple, a bit unexciting way, but beautiful nonetheless. Is it really that warm in NYC already? Sheesh. We're still wearing scarves and coats in SF. Can't wait till flip flop weather arrives.
The ubiquity of flip-flops is indeed the cause for tears, for it marks the general decline of, not only sartorial standards, but just plain good dressing habits. Just because many people wear them does not make them elegant, sartorially interesting or attractive. I am sure I will get taken to the woodshed for this, but Americans are consistently some of the the worst dressed people on the planet. The proof for this uncharitable assertion? One needs only to travel the world a bit to see it.
There is a difference between having fun with 'the rules' of fashion, bending them, even breaking them, and asserting that they are not needed at all. When they are no longer wanted, it will be a sign that the hordes are at the gate and we will enter the Dark Ages again. The collective memory of the past discarded. Flip-flips are only a small sign of this sad trend. Indeed, they are everywhere.
Women wearing trousers? Nothing wrong with that. The examples of Katherine Hepburn and Coco Chanel are famous. But they did it with taste and originality. Sloppiness only earns negative sartorial marks.
She is beautiful. Love the dress, love the purse, love the flip flops. (They're her feet, frankly I don't worry about whether or not she's comfortable or might trip in the dirty subway, I leave it to her to figure that out for herself.) That said, she looks extremely comfortable, in her skin and the flip flops! Easy beauty, not trying too hard, doesn't need to.
the classic white cotton baby-doll dress to mark the beginning of spring! but i have to agree with several other commenters about the flipflops, or what i like to call them: shower shoes. never classy.
In Australia everyone wears flip flops (Havaianas!)- and now I live in California - I still wear them a lot. I think flip flops look great, as long as they're not worn out and old. Team them up with a pedicure and voila! This girl dresses very Australian - very northern beaches, Sydney. I think this colour suits her beautifully also.
hahaha. I couldn't even get through all the comments, there's just so many, but the freak-out about flip flops is just plain funny. I live in Australia, in an inland city, but we all wear them everywhere in summer - including on a day-long trample round the city. They're comfy, laid back, and suit this girls outfit perfectly.
Anyone who thinks that that flip flops cannot be stylish has a very narrow view of style - style is not the sum of what you wear, it's also about the way you wear it.
Hurrah for early summer! Flip flops look great with this dress and the very summery sunglasses. Great photo Sart. The anti- flip flop gang should lighten up and have a chilly refreshing beverage. Probably too much hot coffee and caffine to ward off the winter chill has given them a bit of an atty-tude. Waiting for the appearance of linen, seersucker and madras. Keep up the great work.
the dress is from f21 last year or the year before. thesart posted a pic of a girl wearing it in navy.
super!!
why is everyone hating on flip flops? i live in sydney, and they're definitely acceptable (the norm) here! and you can wear them when you're wearing something pretty too, they look fine.
maybe we just have nice feet in this city.
I use to live in Hawaii and you were "out of stlye" if you were NOT wearing your slippas!!(flip flops)
I think it's a matter if you like feet or not? You know what I'm saying???
I LOVE feet....but find H&M clothes don't hold up very well....it's too bad because they have some fun stuff...
So what do y'all propose she wear instead of flip flops? Doc Martens?
I love the photo. Gorgeous lighting, with late afternoon sunlight casting slanted shadows on the pavement and on her skin. The background has lots of elements but isn't too busy and really makes her stand out. I like her contemplative look. She has a great presence and the photo really captured that.
But this photo as a fashion inspiration? Not so much. Her look is sweet, simple and clean. It's attractive, flip flops and all, but it's not really something I expected to appear on The Sartorialist...it's almost - dare I say it - boring. Or have we become too accustomed to shots of people with more individualised style? Either way, I hope photos like these are replaced in favour of those that combine this girl's poise and the usual out-of-the-ordinary fashion choices seen in other photos on this blog.
I can't exactly say why, but this is one of my favorite photos.
But this is just another beautiful woman in good lighting, not quite style.
eh. *shrug. this look does nothing for me. nothing special. the girl is cute, but the look..not unique. not sure why you chose this girl to shoot, besides the fact that she looks like naomi campbell.
I am guy and i wear flip-flops all the time in Summer. I live in London and i am moving to New York very soon.
Is there really anti-flip-flop feel in the city?
I have that dress I think. Its from a swedish clothingstorechain called Indiska. Or at least mine is exactly like that one...
I do love spring/summer in the city..New York City. Summer in the city, at last!
And I don't see anything wrong with the flip flops, except if she's trying to catch a train!

I think she looks great - very natural and a carefree, unfussy style for a warm gorgeous day spent in Manhattan.
People always talk abut how bad flip-flops are, but really, in NYC everybody isn't always in heels b/c they walk everywhere. In summer this means sometimes you break out the flip-flops because they are COMFY and summery. Especially if you're in a low-key mood. Style isn't always about constrictive clothing.
My cousin moved to NYC a few years ago for her great job after living her whole life either in California or the South where flip-flops are ok attire. I met her for dinner after she got out of work one night and she was wearing an immaculate white tailored suit and when I complimented her on it she then pointed out her 'commuter' shoes - white flip-flops that she wore on the way to work and back! Stop being snobs, flip-flops have their place and it's not just at the beach for a lot of people.
isn't funny how we view individual-thrown-together style as fashion....when the majority of these "fashionistas" look like cardboard cutouts of eachother. They view these pictures to get inspiration. Inspiration on how to throw anything on and try to appear as thought they put no thought into it at all.
So then, there she is, a girl in a simple white dress with dare I say... simple flip-flops...and some people get up in arms about how un-inspiring and how un-fashion she is. The lovely thing is....
Anything goes in FASHION. Individual style is what makes fashion so great. If you have the confidence to walk tall with what you throw on that day, that's what matters. So, your a bit trendy, artsy, emo, rocker, punk, earthy...etc. What's the deal? I would bet that if this young lady had striped knee socks on with her toes wrapped around the thong of the flip-flop everyone on this blog would probably think it was the most avantgard look. Heres a clue..go back to the top of this blog and re-read it!
For a brief moment, I thought she was blind and holding a cane! Its the light play on the sidewalk.
I definitively love this blog... the pictures are very nice, congratulations...! This girl looks like a top model, very cute style, where do you find them?! From now on, I'll try to keep my cam with me, maybe I'm lucky to find people any close to these...
The girl with the hat is my absolute favorite : ) The white dress on the dark girl is lovly as well but is it not a little to cold to wear flip flops?

I love everything the dress and the color on the young woman. She looks like she is just enjoying a warm spring day.
Wow, she looks just like Naomi Campbell. Simple outfit yet so pulled-together looking. The dress fits perfectly.
I have exactly a dress like that.
Interesting considering that I live in South Africa.
Fashion is entirely global...
I think that she looks cool and comfortable. Chic without trying to hard. Very zen.
I love how well the the flip flops go with the dress.
I love it, simply because i can see it on me.
oh love the dress...and the flip flops? here's something that i really enjoy wearing...
Nice lighting, but... come on. It's a sundress and flip flops.
