J'adore this dress is beautiful.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:05 AM) :

Beautiful color - but it's that blast of self-confidence that makes this one a winner.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 AM) :

Not digging the shoes on this young lady, but otherwise, she has a bit of old style about her

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:44 AM) :

here you are I found you ! the thief of my grandmother's dress ;-)

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (8:47 AM) :

The color of the dress is so beautiful and I adore her jacket!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:04 AM) :

Not just that dress, that dress, that jacket! I especially like the sort of smallishness of the jacket, beautiful.

Energie

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:11 AM) :

Lovely background enhances the subject. There is timeless sense especially without trendy bags and accessories.

Blogger Vintage and Stardust said ... (9:12 AM) :

Love this girlie! Soo retrochic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:20 AM) :

What an attitude! Nice picture Sart, I like the softness of it all and the nice blend of colors.
Oh, and I really admire this girls for succeeding in wearing this dress so convincingly- I personally a have one or two vintage dresses just like these but I still haven't found the gut to actually wear them...maybe because I don't live in NYC;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 AM) :

on closer inspection, i realized i was wrong about the pants :(
no point in publishing this or the previous comment.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:43 AM) :

What a beautiful color--deep periwinkle is the essence of early spring. She looks like a hyacinth! I love the attitude and the way she's "dressed down" the dress with that casual cover-up. Nice!

Blogger Chi-Chi and the Greek Vintage said ... (10:03 AM) :

SUBLIME!!!!! Intelligent, chic dressing! I worship this young girls style, perfection.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:05 AM) :

Beautiful blue colour and pleating. The navy tights are a bit heavy - I think a lighter grey or even navy sheer hose next time. Her jacket looks like it was on the hook by the door and she threw it on to rush out on a quick errand.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:21 AM) :

I'm fascinated by this woman.. She looks so young and girlish while at the same time ageless. The dress is a beautiful color, and I love that it has pockets. I'm also a sucker for pleats.

Blogger Adiel | Rose Gold Lining said ... (10:26 AM) :

Reminds me of my grandmother, in a good way...
Real classy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

Sorry - too "grandmotherly" for me...especially the lenght. Nobody looks good in the mid-calf lenght IMO. The girl is nice tough...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

Beautiful as the dress is, what I really love is the way the wet pavement, her stance, and the platforms on her shoes make her look like she's hovering above the ground!

Blogger Mr. Badami said ... (10:46 AM) :

there's something so charmingly rustic and old fashioned about this. I feel like she has a hot apple pie waiting on the windowsill or something like that. but then her jacket is so modern and masculine.

it's wonderful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:54 AM) :

Very nice dress and colour, but I think it needs a more glamourous hair and make up.... maybe because the dress reminds the 50´s...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 AM) :

That dress... That dress is an ULTIMATE PERFECTION.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 AM) :

Is that fleece she's wearing. Oh gosh, I don't know ...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 AM) :

No. No, no, no.
Well, ok. I admit the coat is fine. These side, slide pockets are really cool. From my own experience I know they are incredibly practical and comfortable.

Blogger Nor said ... (11:15 AM) :

Who's that girl?

I love the colour and fabric in the dress and the unexpected teaming of it with such a jacket (which is fantastic, by the way).
Only qualm I have is the shoes but that is easily assuaged by the overall fabulousness of this look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:28 AM) :

that's amazing -what is that dress??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

This looks quite familiar. But I love the length of the dress. I always find even the idea of a dress that long daunting but she definately has every bit of confidence needed for it.

Blogger alyson. said ... (12:35 PM) :

love it.

and look at those shoes, are those platforms??

Blogger brooke said ... (12:49 PM) :

i love the dress, but personally, i think its just a liiiittle too long, making it a tad frumpy

Blogger JO said ... (1:09 PM) :

The dress is a bit of a throw back to the 30's....reminds me of a pic of my grandmother I have in her 20's :)

Blogger Luciernaka said ... (1:55 PM) :

That Color is mad!

Reminds me of a quote from Grey Gardens...

"What would you say that is, sort of sapphire?"
-Big Edie Beale

Blogger Magnus Lundgren said ... (1:58 PM) :

You in this wonderful picture, you look . . . exquisite. Get back to me.

Blogger Regina said ... (2:00 PM) :

I love the gramma look!

Blogger Mare said ... (2:07 PM) :

pretty dress. i love the color. i'd love to see it w. a pretty pair of black heels and a black belt on a more elegant-looking woman.
this girl looks cute, though.

Blogger Yvonne-Marie Wontons said ... (3:45 PM) :

Ethereral! The zip-up peacoat and side ponytail are nice, modern touches to balance out the look, though I'd have no problem with the standalone costumey appeal of the dress itself.

I'd half expect the collar to be rounded, but this actually works well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:48 PM) :

she looks wonderful! i adore the colour and the fabric of the dress.

i agree with anon 10:43, she really does look like she's hovering!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:55 PM) :

Nice photogaph! That 'nimbus' around her face. And her hair, amazing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:08 PM) :

i love those shoes. anyone know what they are?

Blogger ANA said ... (4:23 PM) :

I love midnight blue color. It is beautiful, good thing she's tall enough to pull it off so well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 PM) :

She looks so serene. The dress looks vintage, is it? I think the shoes are Chloe.

Blogger La Terpette said ... (5:53 PM) :

I love the dress, the shoes, the hair! And her stance is so powerful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 PM) :

I like confidence but this is sort of unearned confidence. The combination of clothes speaks only to a very limited group of expert insiders and to everyone else it looks gauche; and I don't mean geek-chic, I do mean that it's quite random and not attractive.

Love every single other person you post up, so this is a rare criticism.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:10 PM) :

That blue dress is so striking set against those green leaves. Tres belle!!

By the way, the Fantastic Man photos are smokin', Sart! Absolutely smokin'!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 PM) :

No disrespect to this charming and cute young woman... but that dress is awful. The whole gestalt of the outfit brings to mind the character of the mom on the show '6 Feet Under.'

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 PM) :

I love the pleated dress, so reminiscent of vintage style. Is the dress vintage or by a designer? The collar on the dress is also stunning, bringing a strong quality to a very feminine dress.

Ren..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 PM) :

dark dusty blue pleats and glossy pearly white shoes, note taken!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:44 PM) :

Marni patent leather pumps, SS07

Blogger mette said ... (10:56 PM) :

Don´t like this dress at all. Perhaps it was ok when new,but I have a dislike for vintage clothes, they seldom fit the body of the people of today. Now if I could grab a vintage croc bag, not at all used, preserved nicely in a dust bag, well that would be another story.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:12 AM) :

I'm slightly bothered by how her breasts look. Not sure this dress is good on her. Looks a little paunchy in the stomach area. Would be better suited for someone uber skinny or more curvaceous. I like her face and hair though- very modern.

Blogger The Pilgrim said ... (2:08 AM) :

Lovely, I wonder if it's vintage? I love the no-fuss attitude of how she's wearing it. Great colors and great light (it's funny, at first I thought it was Paris, on the Champs Elysées!)

Blogger MELI. said ... (3:29 AM) :

love the shot location and her demeanor is what brings everything together, she looks perhaps a bit older than what she is, but love her length and color combo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:13 AM) :

This dress!!!! Thank you Mister Marc Jacobs!!!

Blogger Gemma Hawkins said ... (5:16 AM) :

Wow she looks surreal, and kind of like she's floating. Feels like an old movie - very beautiful.

Blogger Scott_in_Zurich said ... (9:02 AM) :

For me, the grandmotherly aspect of the dress is balanced by the sexy curviness of the close fit. Agree that it would be great with a fancier jacket and elegant haircut too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 AM) :

Several commentors have noted the frumpiness of the length - that seems to be a bit tongue in cheek for the wearer. With more conventional pumps, it would be frumpy, but the platforms mitigate that factor. Also, I bet that dress looks great in motion, regardless of its length. The boy-soldier jacket also keeps it from looking too vintage-costumey. A cardigan and brooch would have been a safer choice - for her grandma. I like the look. It's fun without being fussy or silly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

I love the shoes! It looks like she's floating in the smaller picture, and I assume the same effect would be had from a distance.
Beautiful!

Blogger odilean said ... (9:38 AM) :

That dress is from Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2007, when he was on a 70's kick. Just look at that collar. I like the dress a lot, although the accordian pleating would look terrible on anyone with hips, she pulls it off well. On the last day of his big biannual 90% off sale, there were still 2 of them hanging in larger sizes, so I assume that many people found this dress flattering. It's nice to see it off the runway. Thank you!

Blogger odilean said ... (9:39 AM) :

also, this dress is grey, not blue.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 AM) :

i love that kind of not uncompromised elegance. we need more people like this

Blogger Cristina Irisarri said ... (5:08 PM) :

I love it!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:31 PM) :

i like this look. it's so different to what everyone else is wearing these days. even on this site! it's not a look that everyone should run out and do, but that is the whole point. she must have great style the way she put everything together.
some people try to hard to be "different" and to take risks. this girl is one of the few that pulled it off so well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:25 AM) :

Is that bottega veneta?! Ich leibe es! I hope to make a dress like that soon...

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:34 AM) :

Hmmm...To find a picture like this waiting around in Bryant Park would be like shooting a fish in a barrel. Love the pleats! I hear Pleats Please is making a comeback.

Blogger agni said ... (6:30 AM) :

I love granny goes modern, mix
dress is great, jacket could be different

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 PM) :

to 1:12 am. who is concerned about her body. This girl is about 12 and a half.

Seriously. Englarge the picture.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (10:36 PM) :

seriously hazel you have no idea what you are saying enlarge the photo
this is a working woman with a real job

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:25 AM) :

Sorry to upset you Sart. I really believed this was a very young lady. Sorry.

I notice however that you did not take the original commenter to task about her body shape.

Some of the comments on this site are so silly. I'm butting out.

Sorry again.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:17 PM) :

Sart,

I think YOU should have a second look. That girl is seriously young. That's not a bad thing.

If you so vehemently disagree with comments, why to you publish them?

Blogger Pleasant Village Community Garden said ... (12:11 PM) :

Great dress, but it really needs a foundation garment to be carried off correctly. Even if she is only a kid.

Blogger Clara said ... (4:29 PM) :

interesting, a pleated dress? definitely old school style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

Tres chic! Appears (to me) very French inspired, especially with the shoes and hair. Strangely reminds me of a more delicate, earthy version of Edith Piaf. I have to give her great credit for taking the great risk of adding the jacket. Without it, she would just be another woman on the streets of New York, but this masculine jacket gives it depth and a masculine edginess.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:56 PM) :

Books. Covers. Judging.

Sart took the photo and had actual interaction with the subject. I think he knows *what's what* beyond what you assume from the photo, 12:17.

Blogger Nathan said ... (6:14 PM) :

she's beautiful ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:58 AM) :

Downtown Venus,

Hey! this whole site is about judging others and judging a book by it's cover, isn't it? Scott hasn't invited us to look at how nice a person's soul or personality is, has he?

Don't be hypocritical
