Ultra biker chic. Love her shades and the way she tied that scarf.

Blogger Karmander said ... (10:17 AM) :

I know there's going to be people who hate this and say she's being too literal or something, but I'd go gay for her. The fits are incredible, the proportions and that hint of mauve and pink...gah, it's just wicked cool. The cold sunlight is a great touch too, it seems so dissonent. Thank you, nature.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:24 AM) :

ooh, love her style, very tough chick-chic, but girl needs a burger.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

are those Doc Martens? i was a teenager the last time i put on a pair, and that was back in the grunge 90s...don't know if i could pull it off in my late 20s. cool look though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

j'adore des lunettes lanvin, malheuresement ils sont difficiles a trouver aux etats unis :(

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:40 AM) :

The way the scarf is tied adds movement to this constructed look that is so reminiscent of the punk-era. Nice job!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

i love love love the glasses!

Blogger The Spicers said ... (11:00 AM) :

I LOVE the skinny leather jacket combined with the loose scarf and ultra-lean silhouette. She looks fantastic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:18 AM) :

She looks 'Pretty Vacant' Love the scarf, just needs a touch of colour
for focus

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:26 AM) :

To the person in their late 20s: Of course you can still wear Docs. You're still a spring chicken. I wear my purple ones at age 45 and no one cares.

Regarding the outfit: The scarf is extremely lame. Looks like a bib.

Blogger Christina said ... (11:40 AM) :

um, this is a male.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 AM) :

She's stunning understated biker-punk. Fashionable underground. Wants to make a statement, softly. Very cute.

As for Doc Martens, they make them in a wide variety of styles. In my early 40's, and wearing boots with monk straps; fashionable country.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

Wonderful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:26 PM) :

very androgynous...
the person is too skinny, though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:10 PM) :

I really cannot tell if this is a man or a woman.

Blogger Carlene said ... (1:32 PM) :

Just brought out the Doc Martens again, at age 47. I don't know what got into me, but they look great.

Anyway, I love this because this little person looks so fragile and so tough.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

Ummm, that's a guy. Just in case anyone was wondering. I love the look. Very sleek, but I could do without the scarf.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

i was actually just wondering how everyone is tying their scarf like that

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

I'm pretty sure this is a man, and not a woman.
Looks very nice though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:51 PM) :

i think this a boy not a girl, the legs look very masculine thin. maybe swedish or something.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:52 PM) :

its actually he not she

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:53 PM) :

Not sure about the positioning of the ring.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

i love the outfit, and i think the scarf adds some femininity and softness to the "hardness" of the biker/punk/tomboy look. however, i can't help but think how incredibly skinny she is. i would like to think if an average woman with curves wore this outfit, it would be deemed just as stylish as this woman is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 PM) :

this is a man? wut? the face looks really feminine. i'm so confused.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:49 PM) :

I don’t care if its a boy or a girl, this person is incredibly sexy, confident and mysterious. The peace of paper, The belt thing, The glasses! Ohhh and the boots, (Even the scarf), all seem to have thought behind them. To look hard- or to give a bit of girly softness and mystery.

My type!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:58 PM) :

Unless you have insider information, I have to say this is a female.

I think Sart's title Martin in Mid-town is referring to the Doc Martens on her feet.

You can enlarge the photos you know.

Blogger Thom said ... (3:31 PM) :

His name is Martin Cohn, I assure you he is a male not female. This is his 3rd feature on this site.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:31 PM) :

Docs have different soles. These boots are probably "Grinders". If I'm correct the're called Camden Boot - 2 Straps (10 eyelet)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:24 PM) :

he is a male and his name is martin.

Blogger Vax Libertarian said ... (4:45 PM) :

I don't know if its a guy or a girl. That's why I don't like the look. I will never forgive Hansen for making me think they were chicks in that first music video.

I am pretty sure "martin" is referring to Margiela and those tight pants.

Whomever it is needs to be locked in a grocery store until those pants don't fit anymore. It is wholly unappealing. The Sartorialist mentioned the importance of silhouette the other day, and this is great contrast that proves his point to me.

Just to avoid getting wrapped up in the negative, I dig the piping on the jacket that seems to match the tint of the lenses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:46 PM) :

its a boy. martin is his name

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:01 PM) :

i really like the pairing of the glasses with the scarf. I also really enjoy seeing a wallet chain that isn't so clique "emo/ goth kid" i enjoyed this look immensely

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:20 PM) :

i think you photographed him before. he was wearing a dark grey military-esque jacket with a black wrap-around scarf. yes, no? anyway, love the way he dresses and his overral vibe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:20 PM) :

Now this is androgyny!
And the demonstration of how a look can work on both sexes, if necessary.
I have to agree with who says he/she is too skinny, no matter what the gender, but this regards her/his health and not his/her look.

There's a kind of malva reflex on the zippers and the chain, wondering where it comes from.

Ciao!

Blogger winst said ... (5:24 PM) :

And when you enlarge the photos, it's clearly a guy. A very, very beautiful guy.

I love the pink highlights -- not sure what's going on with the wallet chain, and I'm not a fan that it links right to the crotch area, but it's an interesting touch.

The scarf is a little bit messy for me, but I don't mind it actually -- I just feel like the jacket is so interesting that I'd love to see what else is going on underneath.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:46 PM) :

martin. boy. duh.

Blogger ms. swifty said ... (5:48 PM) :

viva androgyny! man or woman, the outfit is unique and interesting. i love the pink detailing on jacket.

re: the comments - boxes are for cereal. quelch the NEED for eveyone to nicely fit into pre-approved ones.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:55 PM) :

anon 2:58- Scott wrote "Martin in Midtown" because this boy's name is Martin. He does modeling and has been featured on the Sartorialist a bunch of times. It seems his gender is always a hot debate, but then again, I think that's what he's going for.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:31 PM) :

i think this is a male guys, and hes been photographed before wearing a similarly androgynous look... i really love layered textures in black, and androgyny :P

also are those cuffs on the ankles, or part of his boots/jeans>

Blogger newton_and_darwin said ... (6:32 PM) :

this is def a guy, the same martin as pictured a while ago. i would assume.. great shot, great style!

Blogger Leonore said ... (6:46 PM) :

Unless I'm wrong this is Martin Cohn, the model (male)? Sart, you've posted photos of him before -- check December 2006.

Fantastic look; incredibly sexy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:47 PM) :

To everyone, Martin is referring to HIS name. I have seen him around before and I am quite sure this is not his first time on here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:17 PM) :

to anon 2:58

his name is MARTIN COHN. he's a model.

i know for sure that this is definitely a male. when sart titles it martin, he's referring to the guy's name, not the doc martens.

this is martin in previous posts

http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/search?q=perfect+androgyny+part+2

http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/search?q=on+the+street+martin+nyc

anyway, his look is always amazing and transcends gender.

Blogger Nor said ... (7:44 PM) :

The hands, legs and feet look masculine, the face looks feminine (or does it?). "Martin" suggests a male, to me, as I don't think the shoes are DM's.

Either way, for me, this is perfection. Androgyny at it's purest. (See above comments for proof!) The monochrome-with-hint-of-colour look is exactly to my taste. The skinny jeans and belt are perfectly fitted and the the shoes work seamlessly with the pant-length. The layered shirts and bib-tied scarf add softness to an essentially hard look and the chain and glasses add a sense of punkish toughness. I am honestly in love with this. I cannpt fault it. This is a look which is in the true direction of my personal style. How inspiring, thankyou!

To me the icing on the cake is the fact that this person is carrying off such a dark outfit in such bright sunlight. They're like some kind of sartorial-god beamed down from heaven (or up from hell) for us. Take your pick.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:52 PM) :

pretty sure those are Frye Veronica Lace Ups and not Doc Martens....to throw a wrench in the argument.

very interesting shot, Sart!

Blogger Jessie said ... (7:55 PM) :

this is martin cohn, a male model. he has been featured on this site in the past.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:08 PM) :

that's a pretty feminine face. i thought it was a girl with her hair tied back. love the top part of teh outfit, the legs are too skinny for me tho and the shoes too bulbous. not sure if they are doc martins..can't see the threading.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:16 PM) :

Wow I love her, Just bought myself a pair of Doc Martens too, but i doubt ill look as good in them. Them wayfarer style glasses are ace too and the scarf.
WOW

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:18 PM) :

This has to be one of my favorite pictures ever. His outfit is truly PERFECT. From the amazing shades to the awesome boots. And of course, that fierce scarf! I LOVE IT!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:26 PM) :

I'm a fan of the touch of color throughout the outfit that really emphasizes the adrogynity of it. And I enjoy the "positioning" of the chain. Wouldn't it be subversive to place a lock or a key off the end of the chain right there?

And the weight of the Docs really keep the outfit from floating away. They provide anchor in this outfit. Entertaining shot and outfit, Sart, but definitely not something I would wear.

D

Blogger MARIA H said ... (8:30 PM) :

total gorgeous angel from a gothic japanese cartoon: can you get more androgynous

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 PM) :

MARTIN IS A MALE MODEL.

back to the clothes: brilliant.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:45 PM) :

he/she looks cool. pale skin, slick hair, interesting placement of chain to belt center... sort of displaced... intention for chain to be visible from front.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:53 PM) :

it's a guy. I remember a beautiful photo with him (martin) few months ago, on a graffiti wall.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:55 PM) :

I own those shoes, they are Junya Watanabe. They are very much like Grinders, Doc Martins tougher brother. I love this girl.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:18 PM) :

This is MALE MODEL named Martin Cohn. He's a boy, an American boy.

http://flickr.com/search/?q=martin+cohn

Blogger FOUNDfashion said ... (9:28 PM) :

proto punk modern dress

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 PM) :

After checking out Flickr I can see that it doesn't make any difference to him.

He's just fetishly skinny.

Blogger Eunice said ... (11:10 PM) :

THIS IS SO COOL

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 PM) :

Oh Joost,

How clever of you to pinpoint the boots so well.

Way to be an individualist!

(Does it really matter just one tiny bit?)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:16 PM) :

Can tell the gender let alone the provenance of the boots.

Blogger LeWak said ... (11:42 PM) :

i LOVE him
everytime you shoot him he's brilliant!
styledby-lewak.blogspot.com

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:54 PM) :

i really love this look! can someone tell me the brand of the sunglasses?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:17 AM) :

Does anyone know who makes those shades? Been looking for an oversized wayfarer looking ones just like that for the longest time!

Blogger Somers said ... (12:28 AM) :

Love the look. However, I think the scarf overwhelms her. If it was about half that size and showed off the jacket a bit more, that would be perfect. More like an over-sized bandanna. Wallet chain could go too. Other than that, fab.

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:32 AM) :

I have to say, I'm chuckling at all of the posts regarding this model's gender.

Have we forgotten that many adolescents have a genderlessness about them that is a true reminder of our common fragility?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 AM) :

I don't understand what's so special about this, except for the drape of the scarf (which is pretty cool). If you look at this photo without his head, it just looks like another heroin junkie... I mean, I live in Seattle, and except for the fact this guy's clothes are clean, he looks almost exactly like any of the local junkies.

Though, it's pretty clear that sart takes photos of pretty faces, instead of always nice outfits. This has been pretty apparent recently.

Blogger Montgomery said ... (2:39 AM) :

Perfect. Black and White. Hair is fantastic and the background is so interestingly icy. Future biker?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 AM) :

~punk princess~

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 AM) :

i love this outfit! and who makes those sunglasses?

Blogger UESman said ... (3:11 AM) :

This is exactly how he dressed everyday in highschool. Good to see ya, man.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:45 AM) :

Wonderfull!! But she's way too skinny.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:46 AM) :

lucky legs

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:25 AM) :

martin may or may not be the most beautiful boy i've ever seen

Blogger Luciernaka said ... (12:15 PM) :

pretty

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:21 PM) :

Punx not dead! Indeed, it seems to be alive and well as a classic look. Strange, how a look that was once so jarring and rebellious can be so clean and sleek.

I love the meld of feminine and masculine beauty in the face of this lovely young person. Androgyny always catches the eye, so it is wonderful to play with.

Very nice to see this photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

these comments are really funny.
i too thought it was a girl (even after i looked at it enlarged). i was going to say how much i liked "her" elegant ballerina hair with the punk attitude of the clothes.
though really there's no reason why i still can't say it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 PM) :

He is almost perfect. I love when men look a little feminine. The jacket and the sunglasses are fantastic. I love the pink zippers on the jacket, which gives it detail. I am usually not a big fan of pink and black together, but in this case it looks good. Doc martens are always a winner and you can never go wrong with skinny black jeans. He makes this look just right. Not to junkie, but enough to make it heroin chic and absolutely gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:43 PM) :

Sart, loooove your site, but this thread is an example of why moderated comments don't work. In the first round there is confusion then in the second round EVERYBODY needs to answer it. Which gets away from the focus of the site, the clothes.

It's tough to read a thread when nearly every post is answering the same question.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:55 PM) :

Crazy fly. I love that he's wearing that balenciaga jacket also.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:08 PM) :

@Aitch,

The exact type of boots do not matter I suppose (I'd always prefer 14 eye highs without the buckles and in a more matte kind of leather ;)

The pair Martin is wearing are a limited edition though. Individuality guaranteed :)

About the look: I really like the drainpipe jeans -especially when everybody still seems to be running around with flares- and the jacket in combination with a neutral good quality shawl.

Squatter dress code in Europe would dictate this to be the obligatory keffiyeh and perhaps a hoody. IMHO the combination of jacket & boots would also work with 'baggy trouwsers'..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:48 PM) :

love this.

Blogger Tatiana Romanova Surya said ... (12:55 AM) :

the pink detail on the jacket is so delightful! he looks perfect in it :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:03 AM) :

The pink, is actually the how the light falls..
But martin sure likes androgyny:

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:02 AM) :

Very Serious but stylish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:07 AM) :

Are those Dr.Martens? They are a cult classic...next I'm in England I want a pair...even if I never have anything to wear them with. Then again I want a pair of leather riding boots too...decisions, decisions. Anyway, she rocks this look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:19 AM) :

those glasses actually are lanvin way shiners

one step above hot topic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 PM) :

I don't think I can bear to see another outfit like this. So common, so boring. It's got every current fashion cliche all in one. She looks good, but interesting enough for a fashion blog? Come on.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (12:48 AM) :

Come on Rachael - she is a he
maybe that makes it interesting enough for a fashion blog

Blogger Hanna said ... (9:46 AM) :

Love the shades!:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:30 PM) :

really cool outfit but she ist too thin...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:29 PM) :

I guess people just don't read the other comments.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:03 AM) :

actually i don´t like that biker style but she did a very good job ..love her scarf

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:25 PM) :

HE has amazing hair. he reminds me of some child actor whose name has escaped me..

i love how the keychain is so nonchalantly slipped onto the beltbuckle, and how the dimensions of both play against one another..

also, zips and chain coordinate so nothing looks out of place. even the lenses of the shades echo the tone without matching.. ace.

Blogger Clau said ... (7:42 AM) :

Cool. Swedish Look-A-Like.

Like these androgyn, skinny figures? Welcome to Stockholm!!! Södermalm is just full of guys looking like him.

Genes were nice with Scandinavians!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:46 PM) :

People here seem to find almost any outfit great, even if it's boring, normal or clownish. Well this one's pretty normal..all black. What is great about it though is the gorgeous scarf/draping and the glasses.

By the way, that boy REAAAALLY looks like a woman...very feminine legs, lips, face shape..and a prominent forehead is also very feminine. I would've never guessed it was a guy!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:42 PM) :

this is so me
