Comments on "On the Street....Rive Gauche, Paris"
how suave
TA Timeless Shot! Love it! He reminds me of one of my uncles...
Sart, did I see you last Saturday morning at the Marc Jacobs store in Paris?
Kinda really debonair and dashing...the turtleneck is perfection.
BEAUTIFUL!
No need to go b/w with this for circa 1930 look; even the Rollie bracelet works (and no Range Rovers floating down the Seine!). Superb subject/shot; we are all thinking "what is he thinking."
Simplicity. Hmm, sleek hair... Ascetic and interesting.
He has a great style!
That is a beautiful shot simply from the perspective of art. The clothes are what they are, but the photo is beautiful.
And can we please not have extended dialogue about the cigarette? The man smokes. Deal with it.
wow!! nice caption sart..

Perfection! Hair, coat, sweater, pose, location.... Flawless!
perfeito.
wow you truely have some amazing photographs on your site :)
Oh, how fantastic. I just love this photo. He reminds me a bit of the actor Fredric March.
elegant bastard.
I love the 1920's style hair. I worship his mix of black turtleneck, coat..(one could only assume it's cashmere) and navy pants. I'm thinking we should marry!!
everything. about him. is cool.
great hair. nice roly too.
I am not sure if anybody has commented on this in recent sartorial history, but I can't focus on the beauty of the photos when the subject is smoking. Instead of noticing the stainless watch lurking in the shadows of the rich ebony topcoat, I am picturing the color of this man's lungs (probably the same color as his coat).
Wow...the Garden of the Finzi-Continis.
OMG! Effortless elegance. What a handsome man! Love the total look!
i love the way the navy pants stand out with the black trench and his slick hair great pic!
love the collar and the slicked back hair. penny for his thoughts while he smokes his cigarette
which movie did he fall out of?
amazing!
simple, effective, casual.....very well conducted....i love that shot....keep up the work sart
A gentleman with a strong profile shot folding his arms in an almost political fashion looking sternly into the distance with an air of elegance and power.
Style meets power. That's the feeling your photo gives me.
Simply brilliant.
bello!
great pic, reminds me of mickey rourke: pose, haire and cigarette
Ah. A coat which fits. Lovely. Tell me, do you pose your subjects or let them arrange themselves naturally? They all look so good.
So so SO parisian ! more Rive Droite than Rive Gauche actually ;)
I know this man and he's a regular kind of guy was prolly brushing a thought or two in the air surrounding you and wherebouts this photo would actually end, but then again we all like to indulge in some frivolti. And way good stuff to the photo on the bottom, love how she looks clueless too and that she doesn't know what take from this, in the backyard of somewhere so special, she has the look of trying to find more columbus or something. I couldn't do much better than to end here like that there.
Wow! extremly smart style!
very sophisticated.
love it!
A little too much like an advert for Old Spice cologne. It's always a risk when pairing a naval-style coat with a turtleneck sweater.
hey Anon 9.42
ummm if he doesn't care about the colour of his lungs, why do you?
So simple, so stylish. And for a woman the same in off-white and beige and a subtle scarf? I am learning...
Interesting how so nasty habit like smoking may be so charming sometimes...
Lord have mercy. I don't think even MOVIE stars get it this perfect. He's mature, sophisticated, strong, Classic with a capital C...and sart, you out did yourself with this portrait. It is SO interesting and so multilayered and complex...and the model being as handsome as he is makes this absolutely irresistable. I wouldn't dare ask him what he's thinking and interrupt this stunner of a moment.
Very, very stylish. Clearly a man who has watched a lot of classic cinema.
Another great image; I suddenly want to go read a John Le Carre novel.
The Rive Gauche indeed.
Oh, my gosh! I would die to have his fingernails.
He's got that "james bond villain" thing going on.
Hello 1980's!
This is a classic photo, Sart. It's all about the attitude. The navy coat with upturned collar, cigarette, slicked-back hair, Paris setting. This pic oozes romance. Very well done.
His calm demeanor is the perfect accessory.
This man and his style are simply fantastic. His look is very clean and strong and has been captured in a gorgeously iconic photo.
Wow! He is the sophisticate of my dreams...the European love affair that I have missed the opportunity to have...
The polish and confidence coupled with restraint; nary a pair of Gap khakis or an ill-fitting sweater in sight (although those have their place...). Refreshing.
Lovely photograph!
Not too fond of colour combination for the turtleneck and topcoat, though. A light heather gray would have really made it.
Hair and pose are great though!
a peacoat. yawn.
Well, obviously the building in the background is Palais de Chaillot, hence the photo is taken on the left banks at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower and... well, this is not quite what we call "rive gauche". Rive gauche is the 5th, the 6th, the 7th if you wish but some areas of it (rue Cler, avenue de la Bourdonais) but pls NOT the crowed area in the middle of all the tourists, this is not very rive gauche, which indeed evokes a certain style and the guy on the photo certainly has this very elegant attitude: nice shot.
Oo-la-la. He's got it all and his hands suggest he is a man of leisure.
Are you wearing make-up Phil? Dashing nonetheless. Well done old boy!
a picture you just love to look at. So well done Sart. Kudos!
Hi Lucy--
I don't know what 9:42's feelings are about the issue of personal choice when it comes to smoking. I agree with you that this guy has every right to smoke morning, noon and night.
But in this photo, smoking is clearly being held up as stylish--as it clearly is in this photograph. I adore The Satorialist, but he has shown on many occasions a beautifully dressed person wagging a butt. Having watched my mother die from lung cancer, lemme tell you: it ain't glamorous. And I hate to think that young people are being sent the message that smoking is.
Apologies for being Debbie Downer here, but it's easy to forget the gruesome reality of smoking. This guy would look every bit as fabulous with his beautiful, empty hand. Absolutely.
this man looks like he came straight out of the biopic of a WWI general - that stare could stop an army in its tracks, it just conveys pure authority so casually it's beautiful.
I am not a smoker at all, but when I see this picture, I have to admit that this man has a nice style and his cigarette gives him such a nice look. I look smokers who go for stylish cigarettes, this man has a really cool with his cigarette. His hair is also very nice!!
hmm yum!
he wouldn´t look the same without the cigarette!! admit it
God damn it I wish I could get my hair to do that.
Oh, dear God. Yes he SMOKES, SO WHAT? There are no young children that visit this site regularly who will be corrupted, are there, if that is your issue? All of you critics please take your political platform somewhere else. I'm so sick of this new American conservatism that is trying to censor everything!
wow, that's just... cool. wow.
a pose not a poseur
Love the hair and pose. It looks so 1950s Hollywood.
One of my favorite photos here.
Wow. This is a painting. I love it.
oh my god, he is so adorable! the perfect bad man for movies.
phil you old carla rosa..
Extraordinaire! C'est Camus par Cartier-Bresson avec une touche de Bogart dans Casablanca... cet air d'intellectuel parisien engagé...
Sa pièce est peut-être jouée ce soir.
One word,,,Neat! Love it.
Wow Man of my dreams!
Are you wearing make-up Phil? Dashing nonetheless. Well done old boy!
