simply...one of your best.

thank you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:37 AM) :

this is real. it is honest. the colors are moody and powerful, and his eyes steal you away from whatever moment you are in.

the hermes scarf, the slightly faded sweatshirt, the lint on the jacket, the rings, the clench of his fist.

this man has something to say, and i am just left wondering what it is.

Blogger rosemary x said ... (2:14 AM) :

effing beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:36 AM) :

as if you've pushed the last picture even further... wow. *silence*

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:38 AM) :

I love the brightness of the scarf and how well the colour ties into the rest of the outfit (pun intended)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 AM) :

I. Love.
Looking at this picture I want to know everything about this man.

Blogger Adrián Anaya said ... (2:57 AM) :

Blows the rest of them away...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:06 AM) :

An amazing portrait!

Blogger starbahks said ... (3:06 AM) :

It's pictures like these when I realize your blog is not just about fashion or style.

It's about people.
Your photos give not just a visual of the person, but a voice.

How captivating.

Blogger BLOGGGGG said ... (3:20 AM) :

this is an amazing look. the shock of electric blue against the more subdued colors is breathtaking.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:29 AM) :

what i love about what you do is that your photos capture humanity- not simply clothing.

fashion can be so objectifying sometimes and it is nice to know that more than anything, you capture people in a raw moment.

the colours are perfect. how did he know?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:48 AM) :

Now this is a freaking portrait! Such vigour in the eyes, such composure on his face, the clenched fist. Bloody hell, this is magnificent.

Energie

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:07 AM) :

Really like the colour combinations. It's at the same time extraverted and expressive but also elegant and calm...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:34 AM) :

I like what are you do.

Blogger O!Lightning said ... (4:38 AM) :

JUST BEAUTIFUL!

Blogger Cheltenhamdailyphoto said ... (4:56 AM) :

It's such a shame in my opinion that you moderate comments, since we cannot comment on others' views and compare. I rarely get time to come back to see them posted later. Just a thought ... community spirit and all that.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:16 AM) :

i'm so intrigued by this one. who is he - i want to know his story.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:24 AM) :

Perfection. This is a real man, right here,
His eyes, his hand, yes.
He is timeless.

Very, very sophisticated. The plum hoodie, the scarf and the jewelry - that's really something. What a taste.

Blogger Ryfka said ... (7:07 AM) :

Striking portrait.
Agree with Stacey above - that's one of your very best shots.

Blogger Post-it boy said ... (7:26 AM) :

love the scarf

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:33 AM) :

The glint of blue is his scarf matches the glint in his eyes.

Blogger Miriam said ... (7:37 AM) :

I can just agree!
Again a beautiful photo full of calmness and power.

Blogger seoul person said ... (7:59 AM) :

a powerful man...

i admire your photos
because each one of them tells-not simply a fashion style-but a humane story.
i can almost hear him or guess what color his wallpapers are.

undoubtedly the most eyecatching is his firmly closed fist(sort of reminds me of Karl L.)

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:00 AM) :

There's a lot of brooding power here. The fist with rings looks great. And, we note, more evidence for the bright blue theme!

Blogger temi castro said ... (8:16 AM) :

Misterioso...

Blogger InStudio Blog said ... (8:33 AM) :

LOVE everything artistic about this photo, the colors, the clothes, the jewelry, the photo itself. But what first came to mind was "Go ahead, say something about my scarf - sucker."

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 AM) :

normally not a fan of the hoodie and blazer, but the scarf does help.

Blogger astublieft said ... (9:02 AM) :

Striking combinations. Wonderful unity.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:21 AM) :

He doesnt get away with a hoodie, sorry.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 AM) :

A very sophisticated look yet evocative of an earlier age. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:49 AM) :

beautiful man

Blogger materfamilias said ... (9:54 AM) :

stunning portrait -- the tension implied by the fist, the play of bright against dark, the way the light hits the cap and illuminates the knuckles and scarfpoint -- absolutely arresting!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:00 AM) :

This is a stunning photograph. Love his scarf and hat.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

Damn, he's cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 AM) :

The best accessory here is this man's skin tone.
It's the reason the purple and blue look so wonderful.

I looooove this shot!

& the rings add such personality. I like to see things that were acquired in LIFE not just some shoppe.

Thanks you for your shots!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:01 AM) :

Yes. Yes, this portrait reminds me that your subjects tell a story. Each individual is a living artwork. This man's use of layers exemplifies the post-jazz age. The hoodie is a nod to American Hip Hop culture. The "po-boy" cap celebrates the spirit of industry. The blue blazer, class, bearing, presence. And to cap it off, a dazzling blue Hermes' scarf, a nod to the aristocracy. The rings, the fist, the gorgeous visage make me want to know this man. Is he a professor? An artist? A musician? A revolutionary? Who is Hugh - a man of mystery from Milano?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

mesmerizing. i love everything about it. i can't take my eyes off of him. everything about this picture is perfect.

Blogger liz song mandell said ... (11:21 AM) :

I love that pop of blue.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:31 AM) :

Ah! I wish I had the guts to wear an Hermes scarf... maybe one day when I get older. Love the picture, I think you got the lighting just right. Jorge from West Palm Beach

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

As others have said, this picture is truly stunning. Yes, it's the subject matter, but your framing, your sense of light...You seem to be capturing some inner essence of the person. Something's been shifting in your images lately, Sart.... I'm curious to see where it goes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 PM) :

Beautiful portrait.

I love the subdued palette with the punch of color-- I'm glad so many more men are wearing neck scarves. This portrait should be shown to any guy who thinks scarves are girly and femme.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:17 PM) :

What an absolutely beautiful man. The amazing photographic talent makes him that much moreso.

Blogger brandt said ... (12:21 PM) :

Beautiful shot; perfect white balance. Great sense of personal style. Layers, are everything! The scarf is the catalyst.

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:23 PM) :

amazing photo!!! so striking. so rich. so beautiful. so SART!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (12:25 PM) :

Wonderful portrait. His face is compelling but I am still drawn in by the scarf! It's stunning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:26 PM) :

love how you and this man have captured our imaginations. i'm also enjoying that he paired plum with his skin tone - it brings out all of the beautiful purple undertones. the colors he's wearing fit his the mood of the photo so well. very neat work!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 PM) :

I love everything about the photo EXCEPT the scarf. The scarf makes the outfit look like a joke.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 PM) :

If an image can have charisma, this is it, just as the subject looks to be a charismatic person.

Is it possible to make a hoody look stylish?? This is proof yes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:33 PM) :

Fantastic.

The scarf is bordering on camp but it just sets off the whole look. Love it all really.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:33 PM) :

I adore your blog. I could almost say, that it is the best of all!
Anyway, you give me, so weird way pretty much energy!
This foto is amazing. You send the energy and feelings via your fotos. I can almost feel the feelings and be there.

Thanks,
girl from Finland

Blogger Cassaundra said ... (12:44 PM) :

epic.

Blogger Will Anderson said ... (12:49 PM) :

I love the rawness of the fist and how it fills out the photo. I also really like the contrast of his hat. Even though its black with a navy the contrast is great

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 PM) :

One of the rare portraits you do- but what a stunning one! Leaves you breathless.

Blogger tannaz sassooni said ... (1:28 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

nice style, nice scarf, but not on tropic island :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

I have a question for the satorialist.. Are you always in Milan?? I know you have taken a couple trips there.. but alot of your pictures are a mix of Milan and NY.. Are the Milan pictures you are updating now just old pictures that you've had?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:40 PM) :

You have the most sensitive, amazing eye and I thank you for sharing your gift.
Your photos and sensibility have heightened the way I view my fellow humanity each time I step out of my front door.
The beauty of the world is right in front of us each and every day, and your photos are a true expression of this.

What's not to love? A handsome man in a cobalt blue scarf with sturdy, embellished rings. Bellissimo.

Blogger JRenee said ... (4:10 PM) :

Glorious! More men should wear silk scarves.. and, Sart, can you develope a file save on your website were each viewer can save their favorites? This is my favorite!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:30 PM) :

His face is relaxed, his hand is angry. Zintiaanje

Blogger froogal said ... (4:47 PM) :

its all about that electric blue Hermes scarf with the casual hoodie...love that!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

Did anyone notice that this man seems to be the muse for the Dolce & Gabbana a/i 2008-2009 collection? The hat, the scarf, the mix of colors etc?And the woman below at the Cavalli show could also have been inspiring the D&G people, no?

By the way Mr. Sartorialist, I prefer the shots on the blog, nice editing!

Nowhere to comment on the jeans--the Charlotte Gainsbourg stylee- that you have been documenting on the streets of Milano. It is not fun to leave comments elsewhere!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:05 PM) :

The hoodie: elevated.

Interesting,
mltt

Blogger JO said ... (5:18 PM) :

LOVE IT! Great pic!
The color really pops!

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:01 PM) :

I agree with what many others have said. This photo encapsulates many of the reasons why I spent time I don't really have reading your blog. What a great shot; light, composition, and subject all aligned.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:25 PM) :

Yo! All you folks that don't like the scarf and hood - I'd like to see you try to convince this gentleman that these don't work. Go ahead and try. This gentleman is _totally_ working the scarf, the hooded sweatshirt, blazer and cap. The man knows who he is and where he is. So totally well-played.

BTW, the hooded sweatshirt has been around long long before rap as a prep/urban American icon. Rapsters have done nothing but refreight an old American icon with new and different energy. The icon is still open to anyone who can work the shot.

T.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:32 PM) :

Beautiful! Hands down, this is my favorite that I've seen on your site.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:35 PM) :

Such an elegant, deft execution. I believe you should see the person more than the clothes. This man's outfit doesn't attempt to overpower his strong persona.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:50 PM) :

The unsmiling tough guy look has become soooooo tired. Take it easy tough guy.

Blogger Mare said ... (7:02 PM) :

i love his rings.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:28 PM) :

where can i find a hoodie in that rich amazing color??

Blogger Broek said ... (7:28 PM) :

Blogger Jacque said ... (8:36 PM) :

This picture makes me want to know more. His moodiness, piercing eyes, etc. Very well done. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:37 PM) :

No one seems to have mentioned that the fist is formed by gripping the lapel of the blazer. A classic gentleman's move. Well struck.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 PM) :

a mixture of finesse, and power.

just plain badass.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:41 PM) :

i love how his face is framed by dark, muted colors with the shock of blue emanating from his hood, making him glow. I wish everyone put as much thought into their wardrobe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 AM) :

Truly stunning.

Blogger Bella07 said ... (2:19 AM) :

as many of the comments above have suggested, this photo has character.
His fist & his eyes, and the way in which his mouth is frozen. He's looking at us... He's been through things, he's got stories to tell, but I don't think just anyone would hear them.
I love the color composition of the whole photo its truly, appealing and "deep". The light blue is subtle in contrast to his facial expression...and only adds to the depth of the other colors by offsetting it.
you never disappoint Mr.S & neither does Milano ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:08 AM) :

This is a classic portrait. Perhaps you don't run into too many people like this man, but it just emphasizes the point that it's not just the clothes, and it's not just the person, but the combination. This is pointing out the obvious, but this portrait is special. More, More. And thank you for one of the most intelligent blogs in the blogosphere.

Take care

Blogger USelaine said ... (9:12 AM) :

We project so much on him. Most think he is making an angry fist, one commenter notes he is grasping his lapel, while I thought he was holding a bag strap running under his lapel! The man clearly has taste, and looks relaxed and unfazed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:35 AM) :

Less photography, more fashion please.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

Absolutely fantastic photo. Absolutely fantastic scarf.
I've been looking around this blog and I've noticed that, while there is no dearth of excellent pictures of fashion statements from Paris, Milan, and New York, there is certainly a lack of Los Angeles chic. Speaking as a proud Angelean, I think you should come over to the west coast and check out some of the cool people over here... We're not all crazy like Paris and Nicole.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:09 PM) :

This man is great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:03 PM) :

This guy looks interesting. The whole picture is what does it--his expression, the jaunty little hat, the clothes, the colors, the rings, the clenched fist...Makes me wonder about him. He looks bad-ass, but in a cool way.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

Simply amazing!

Blogger marlys said ... (2:00 PM) :

I have NEVER see a hoodie look so good! A perfect example of the whole elevating the pieces to a new level.

Fashion trends are completely irrelevant in the face of subtle creativity such as this. He is an inspiration.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:33 PM) :

Beautiful, it's hard to tear your eyes away from his gaze! That blue scarf is stunning.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (4:20 PM) :

This may be your most original picture.

All these other posed pictures of fashionable wannabe's are so 2006.

Your work is getting better and better.

Keep it up.

Blogger Anne Corrons said ... (4:39 PM) :

I'm sure you are going to go to Paris to shoot fabulous people on the streets during this Fashion Week! Have fun!

Blogger Ammie said ... (6:40 PM) :

I still love the hoodie/blazer look, but my husband has tired of it. So I had to call him in to look at this fresh twist with the richness of the colors -- especially that lightning bolt of bright scarf.

A beautiful shot. Thank you.

Blogger inuse said ... (9:04 PM) :

Love it. So emotionalist and perfect.

(sorry, i'm trying to learn english, so its dificult to find words)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 PM) :

The knuckle-dusters are particularly charming. Amazing how some people view a thinly-masked threat as something stylish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:18 PM) :

What a beautifully rich photo!

Blogger Fashion Tidbits said ... (1:37 AM) :

the power of a simple, coloured scarf is absolutely amazing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:18 PM) :

I call the color of the hood Mahogany - as a composition (photo or fashionwise) it's a great choice with Hugh's skin tone.

The red in the scarf (drawn from that mahogany via a kind of alchemy) is as important as the blue - red changes everything. Imagine that blue with a yellow accent, or with blue's opposite, orange. The whole composition shifts.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

What a wonderful photo, and I might add perfect exposure.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:32 PM) :

cool style!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 PM) :

Very strong, probably the eyes and the fist. Wonderful hit

Blogger She Who Dreams of Sleep said ... (7:27 PM) :

This beautiful man is as wonderful inside as he is outside. I have loved him all my life. He is a true artist and happens to be my cousin.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 PM) :

This photograph epitomises the strength, power and richness of character of an authentic and universal black male....especially that fist, it is as firm as it is definitive. While we are shaped by our surroundings and environments, we are neither defined by nor limited by them....LOVE IT!

Blogger Lyrical Stamper said ... (9:36 PM) :

Intensely stunning.

Blogger cbkphotos said ... (10:23 PM) :

the blue handkerchief is so simple but adds so much to the outfit!

i love it!

Blogger Doodles said ... (10:57 PM) :

I didn't like this series of photos at first...too dark and couldn't quilckly asses with small boy at knee, but then I realized that they all have a wonderful subtltey of blue, black and something glossy

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 PM) :

This is soooo beautiful. Can't be a pocket square, don't think that would go around this man's neck. Looks to little for a full sized scarf. Two pocket squares tied together? How did he tie the scarf (scarves)?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:41 AM) :

what to add? what is the power of this image? the photo or the subject or the mix of the two?
Hugh, you are looking forward to be in advance of the tomorrow, which is always a yesterday, for you.
Whatever I said, I would never want to be hit by your rings :)
grande!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

This is a very beautiful, and compelling shot. The man is commanding and the colour of the scarf pops out from the dark background as does his clenched fist. Very powerful picture.

Blogger OTC said ... (5:22 PM) :

I love the photo for exactly what it is. I'm not making any assumptions about the man or his style. It speaks for itself - beautiful shot, handsome and fashionable man. Love it. I keep coming back to look at it. And look. And look.

Blogger Dunford said ... (7:43 PM) :

Man, I am completely addicted to this blog. Pictures like this hook me. Your photographs all depict people whose clothing looks like it could be an acurate extension and representation of their personalities.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 PM) :

You've created a superb photo of an incredible photographer, Hugh Findletar, whom I've known for over 20 years. I have to agree with many of your bloggers - you have captured his strength, sensitivity and beauty.

Wow! Great colors. How I wish I could get away with wearing that. Unfortunately, when you are a whiter shade of pale as I am, that just doesn't work. :-(
