Comments on "On the Street.....Upper Eastside , Soho"
She seems pretty, but pretty shy for a professional model.
ha! stam?
regardless, love the coat. She looks warm.
Love those Ray Bans.
Love the material but does the cut of the coat leave something to be desired? Looks a little floppy to me or perhaps it's just the way she is standing.
Oh jessica stam! Love the hat and coat....perfect for this cold north east weather we've been having!
Hot. Is that Sharon Stone?
Love her look, love the raybans, want those pants, but real fur is so tacky. It grosses me out just looking at this picture. (If its somehow fake fur, thumbs up, but it looks scarily real.)
Oh wow! Just how I'd like to dress! Perfect in every sense.
Love her scrunchy jacket...Stam's got style, all right.
stam! shouldnt she be carrying a stam bag from marc jacobs as opposed to a balenciaga?
Jessica Stam, yes? Love the beret and wayfarers. Normally I am struck by her fabulous legs, but this shot emphasises a beautiful mouth! Wonderful!
wham bam thank you stam
I looked at this and thought, Of course! Everyone needs a chinchilla sweater.
Love the arch of the eyebrows above the Wayfarers; those plus the mouth give Ms. Stam a somewhat skeptical expression I find charming.
Clearly Jessica Stam! Cool. I love the coat. Yes, the first thing I noticed was the mouth and the eyebrows.
yuck fur. hope its fake.
Love the simplicity of the colour palette and the focus on textures.
STAM!!
My favourite model. I love what she's wearing, too.
oh so it IS stam then?
She's one of my favorite models. Love the coat, love the shades -done in a classy Breakfast at Tiffany's Hepburn style.
Oh, I just love Stam! Great style and what a face.
I envy that models get to wear their paycheques. I want my salary to be a Balenciaga and a Fendi!
A Canadian girl knows how to dress for winter.
Love the way her hat frames her hair frames her gorgeous face!
Eh. I know she's famous and everything, but c'mon, it's a beret and wayfarers. She looks good, but is anything about it really innovative?
Jessica baby not that Jacket!!!!! you look borderline bag lady, why would a beauty like you want to wear such a poorly cut, ugly piece of clothing, not to mention the color and the fur issue, you are so cute but not today...
There's something touchingly vulnerable about this photo of one of the most beautiful models working today, caught when she knows she's not looking her best. Without the hard armour of professional glamour, she does seem rather withdrawn. If there are two sorts of successful mannequins - flashy showboats who are always 'on', and quieter performers who 'bring it out' when the cameras roll - Jessica appears to be one of the latter.
The broadtail jacket and uber-trendy bag are in fact the only clues that she's not just an ordinary pretty girl, since we can't see any of her statuesque figure. Ordinary pretty girls don't have access to such pricey apparel, but they all have access to dark glasses, wooly tams and stretch pants.
I think the nonchalance with which she wears the luxey swag makes a look, but the (vintage?) grey fur seems a bit too mature on such a young girl. I'd rather see something like a beat-up Lee Stormrider paired with that gazillion-dollar bag.
Looks like a cross of Sophie Dahl and Grace Kelly.
no more famous people PLEASE. love your blog but your best shots are your every day people. they are the most inspiring. bring it on satorialist, i know you can do more.
Ah Stam incognito or so she thought? The giveaway: she dresses like the rest of us Canadians trying to beat the cold! Nice pic!
I do not like too much
Thanks for the cold-weather shot. I don't know who she is, but I love that she is comfortable in tht chunky coat.
Ooh one of my favorite models, Jessica Stam. Great catch! Great outfit. Love the mood of the photo as well.
Can't wait to read about the new developments!
Great pose, it has movement. Sart, was she walking when you took the picture or was she pretending to be walking?
I love how the toughness of her black hat -which she wears in a very interesting way-, scarff and sunglasses contrasts with the innocence of her angel hair and rosy skin. Lovely!
And I think it's perfectly fine for models and designers to dress outside of their own products and lines.
It's funny but somehow the jacket, the beret and her perfect Cupid lips remind me of the Twenties, when actually the whole outfit is casual and modern.
the beret and the perfect framing of her face & hair is what does it for me. wish there was some color though!
I recognize her!!!Jessica Stam maybe???
i <3 jessica stam!
ah, the stam.
so happy. so approachable. so arch/above it all/bored.
is it any wonder we love?
Wonderful!
That coat is just so fabulous! Does anyone know who makes it?
jessica Stam! she looks amazing! Love her coat!
She looks cool as usual, but I'd love to know what the pants and shoes are like.
Those sunglasses & that hat completely make the look for me. Wish I could pull it off!
My first thought was "she is channeling Deborah Harry by wearing those Ray-Bans." Cute, compact, warm look.
The more I visit this blog, the more I want to live in New York - must be a great vibe going on there! Or is it the photography? When will you visit Amsterdam?!
RayBans are great. My father has one, and after 20 years of wearing them by him, i own them. it's already 5 years together and they're still in very good condition (:
she looks quite interesting, but i'm against using fur by fashion. so, i said no.
cheers
hey hair is my favorite part
perfect texture and color
the bag, hat and raybans make this outfit. can't say i love the fur though, but it works.
jess is just cutie)
eh.
i always have a hope that by hanging around creative designers, and the like, that models will be more creative in dressing themselves.
she looks just fine to me, but very ny-commonplace, style-wise.
Jessica Sam is wearing astrakan fur jacket from Prada!
Completely fabulous to so casually shoot Jessica Stam.
Oh, jessica. she's just...dreamy. <3
Jessica Stam, MY GIRLFRIEND.
Nice shot, Scott.
I love the Wayfarer's on her. Great outfit, love the casual look of the image.
Scott: are you a member at tfs.com?

fabulous short coat, but i must say you are shooting an awful lot of models and celebrities on the street these days... how about some more normal stylish people sart? i find that anonymous people on the street are much more "fresh" and have an element of intrigue as opposed to these famous faces. otherwise the site is great :)
to be honest I knew she was a model but I really didn't know who - I still think she looks cool
as for celebrities - who?
I don't think i have shot any celebrities - again they may be know to some but I don't take the time to follow that stuff
I just looked down the front page again and I don't see any celebrities
i've seen her around the UES before!
i wonder if she lives around here.
Love Jessica Stam... the coat classes up the outfit and she really pulls off the ray bans.
Stam...you wouldn't think with all that exposure to great clothing she'd end up looking like a green freshman at nyu.
Don't like the jacket at all but i LIKE the look of that bag!
I'd say stam is a great model whose annonymous style looks good but not the jacket. NOT THE JACKET!
I hope that is real fur if that is what she decided to wear. After all, it's HER choice and HER'S ALONE!
Am I the only person who doesn't like jessica stam? She only has one face, right? obligatory zoolander comment - They're all the same! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
That jacket looks like karakul: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karakul
jessica stam looks absolutely gorgeous! i love her style and how puts everything together. she looks so chic and stylish..love her style!
Regardless of her celebrity (or not) status, the black works so nicely against the whiteness of her face. The impressive coat with four coal buttons. And again, mysteriously missing hands.
omg, Stam--one of my favorite models. She looks fabulous as usual.
Stam would look incredibly gorgeous were it not for the fur coat.
Killing for vanity is beautiful?
Don't think so.
ah, the ever gorgeous miss stam - i love her immensely! i think she's a complete darling.
jessica stam! lucky! i wish i could photograph her!
Celebs are people after all and have a sense of their own styles too, and I think Sart manages to capture that for us which is great! Love the way she pulls off the Ray Bans and her overall chic yet casual look.
ok, im pretty sure that the name 'stam' has been mentioned quite enough in this page of comments. the pointing out of whom the picture was taken is hardly a comment, perhaps everyone could stop taking such joy in the fact they recognise her? I feel some are gloating that they know her name.
That jacket is not very flattering to her incognito look, she looks like stuffed animal who survived a laundromat, be a little less evident. She is a cool model but obviously no taste... and by the way that balenciaga hand bag is so "pasado de moda"!
Great ray bans and clean skin!
love stam.
she's gorgeous.
to sart at 7:12--let me first define celebrity. celebrity the state of being well known. what celebrity's on the front page you ask. jessica stam, jessica joffe. the majority of people as stated in their comments know who these people are. they are well known, therefor according to the correct definition of celebrity, this makes them celebrity's. second let me state i am a little shocked you work in fashion and photography and did not know this was jessica stam. either thats pretty cool or are you for real. not sure what to say to that one. will just have to keep reading. till then don't get so bent out of shape over peoples comments, freedom of speech is what makes this world and blogs for that matter so interesting.
sorry Jessica... love the jacket, but hate the combo... i don't like the jacket with the hat, black scarf and balenciaga bag... i don't know... there's something wrong... but i can't tell what it is...
A fur jacket? It is ok,but don´t like the stuffed scarf nor fhe bag.
Love the bag and the fur jacket is ugly-cute. Sorry if that doesn't translate. And also those huge wannabeanie things are just a nuisance now aren't they. I was at the mall the other day and every other indie/scene girl was wearing one. All I have to say is that they are not an Olsen twin.
-AM
for anon 12:25am
Maybe Ms. Joffe is a celebrity but I didn't know who she was when I took the shot - that easy
as for the models, I when I owned the showroom I helped cast shows for some of the designers and we were able to get a lot of big name girls (for free or trade of clothes) but I had to go through so much begging and dealing that I have become really burned out on the whole "star model" thing.
I alternate between feeling bad for them and being annoyed by them so if I do end up shooting a model it is an honest opinion not just a grab at shooting a pretty girl.
Oh please.
I have read this blog for almost a year and a half and see a definite shift in your choices in subjects.
It used to be more average person fashion snaps but now you feature editors and retailers that may not grace any tabloids but definitely are celebrities in the fashion world. Carine, Sarah Rutson, all the men's wear guys.
You have shot plenty of well known models as well. Agyness Dean, to name one.
To say that you don't know who they are and that they are just pretty girls doesn't seem honest to me. The shot of Agyness from the shows appeared on other sites and I know that she is followed by a herd of of photogs at the shows. You may not have know who she was but you knew that she was famous enough to warrant lots of attention.
Again I say, if you are given whatever free clothing and accessories you want, how much style is that really?
More interesting "real" people and less "celebrities".
That should be a resolution. The name game is ridiculous.
I love Stam, there is something about her look.
im in love with that bag.
and stam. haha.
.. that coat is prada, yea?
Classic black & grey w/hints of gold--can't go wrong with this palette!
Anon 9:58 seems like the type who takes fashion much too seriously. Such a shame.
Keep shooting whoever the hell you want, Sart. And for the record, I love this candid shot of Stam more than any editorial photo she's ever done. It's much more honest.
my god people, give the guy a break. whatever your assumptions are, you'll never really know what's what. whatever's running through the sartorialist's mind.
and you speak as if he is in great debt of you and "must do" just to satisfy every opinion you people have in mind. after all, he is a person not a saint, even if "you say" that he is somewhat changing his perceptions, it will and forever remain his right. after all, he is not bound to have the same visions as he had before.
oh and well, i think that stam is a worthy subject, i also think that it sucks that "famous" people are left out on these things, and are being judged. just cause it seems that they have the better hand at everything. but it definitely doesnt mean that they shouldnt earn recognitions for the simplest things.
The fur is known as karakul. It is a stunning material...on the lamb's body that it belonged on, not as a fashion item once the animal is butchered. I nearly succumbed to buying a karakul coat once, and after researching further, realized how sickeningly cruel the harvesting of this type of fur (any fur) is. We have too many options today to resort to doing this to hapless living beings for mere clothing.
I can't believe all the crap around complaining about celebrities in this blog. What I love about this pic is that it took me awhile to realize who she was, and I like the fact that at first she looks like another pretty girl, but with style. It is also nice to see a model understated, it's refreshing. As for the fur, I don't wear fur, but this is a great pic, coat and all. Don't change a thing Sart!
oh c'mon fashion kids -- the coat is marc jacobs, not prada!!
she's fabulous
Jessica Stam!!!
I love her.
The perfect example of someone being celebrated because what they bought is expensive, and she's famous - not because she actually looks great...
xoxo.
Jessica Stam is definitely one of the best working models today. Totally recognizable and gorgeous even just walking down the street. A true beauty.
Some one said earlier "no more famous people." How about no more people who can walk into a store and say "I don't care what the price is, just put me in some thing chic." True style can't be bought. Sart, I love your photos, and yes the rich look great, but honestly, so would I if I had the amount of money that they do. Plus it's a little tiresome seeing the same Botoxed faces in leggings, high heels and carrying the IT bag.
How about some more "real" people with real style. Like the man that you sat and had coffee with; that was a wonderful story and photo, and in all honesty, he had on some great clothes! Or the old woman with the coat that didn't think she was beautiful. Or the two college students from sometime last year.
Stam looks great, not because she's famous or rich, but because she's stylish. I have a hunch that she'd be wearing that exact same outfit on a college campus (maybe not fur or Fendi) just going to class.
When I hit "comments" I was expecting to see a deluge of scoldings about the fur posting-but there were so few!
Sart, I know you are not the fashion morality patrol, but PLEASE reconsider posting shots of people wearing fur. By now, we all know the sad story of what happens in the fur trade. To wear (or endorse) fur is declasse, not to mention an open admission that you support such a brutal industry.
Fashion has evolved so much since the days when fur may have been a necessity; now there are so many fabulous alternatives to fur. I'm not saying you have to go organic, but why not take advantage of (and responsibility for) the tremendous influence you have now Sart: give the fur a rest!
Thanks,
A fashion student and faithful reader in NYC
Very chic! Love the look! :)
How can it be UES as well as Soho?
Stam! There might be a problem when so many of us recognize a model whilst she wears a hat and glasses. That said, she is a chic lady.
great outfit on a great model. looks efortless.
WHAM BAM ITS STAM! all that talk about fur..who cares. she looks absolutely phenomenal.her whole look i digggg
It's Jessica Stam! I love her. And I also really love this look on her. Great capture.
the jacket is chic if its faux. otherwise, curse her. Its Stam! the nose is a dead giveaway!
I wish I had the money to dress the way I wanted to. :(
I look at fashion blogs everyday, and I don't look anything like these people because I can't afford anything being a broke college student in major debt.
nothing much about this I find inspiring or interesting...just another pretty face!
Seriously - some of the people on here are unbelievable!
Most fashion models have amazing style, they need too - it's all part of the job. Getting free things has nothing to do with it like someone mentioned - is Marc Jacobs in their bedroom in the morning styling them? NO! As for Agyness, it's quite obvious she has a unique style & it's generally not free stuff from the designers ... They dress themselves, they have style ... Whether stuff is free is irrelevant.
As for Jess, she looks great .. she has a super nice personality & people need to lighten up - fashion is meant to be fun, it's not meant to be serious.
Also, as for Jess being a celeb? Well, perhaps to those who follow fashion but if you go to the depths of Texas or Louisiana etc.. would anyone recognise her name? Doubtful!
hey charlene k, some people actually care about not using fur. ya digggggggggg?
Love the coat, and the 1950s-ness of the ensemble. She's like a modern Monroe.
I don't have a problem with fur. I also wear leather shoes and eat meat ... it's all the same thing, really. People should leave Sart alone.
well... she has this kind of "i dont really care what you think of my clothes" look, which make the entire outfit more applealing to us. its nothing about the clothes but something about stam's attitude and demeanor... it just screams cool!!
Not so much Monroe; more Grace Kelly, maybe, if you're getting into that.
Well I'm in London and would never in a million years have recognised this girl or her name. She looks cute. And she's slouching.
The best thing about dressing in the city is not having to try so hard every minute. What people call "effortless glamour" is both those things - less effort, but still choosing the right pieces to throw on. And trust me, it looks very different from your average person in the line at the supermarket in their nasty old sweats and some pastel top that makes them look like a cube. Obviously. Whoever complained earlier in the comments that she looks like any college freshman has, I think, missed the point completely! (And it doesn't cost a lot of money, either, effortless glamour. Why does every look have to be "innovative," as whoever said, taking this girl to task for wearing plain old Wayfarers and a beret? I'm living in berets this season. Sometimes style is precisely in something being a classic and the wearer feeling really good in it.)
The black/silver thing here is beautiful and the fur catches so much light - great to photograph, whatever your ethical stance on fur.
those
glasses
SHOULD BE
mine!
"Well I'm in London and would never in a million years have recognised this girl or her name"
Being in London has nothing to do with it. Anyone who follows fashion would recognise her & most would be able to name her.
It's strange that you randomly bump into these "celebrities" on the street.
Most fashion models do not have amazing style. They are taught that by the kind folks at their agencies. They are being crafted into a product that will sell. Try looking at them at the testing level.
They may not have Marc Jacobs in their bedrooms styling them, although Agyness may have Gareth there, but they do have piles of free and fantastic clothing. You can hardly miss.
Models are used because they are good clothes hangers that show off the garments to their best. You can put a paper sack on them and want to buy that sack. Real people have to work harder.
People that have style, real style, have it at any price level and at any stage in their personal development.
Love the whole look! I want her bag, her hat and also the scarf! But I don't like the coat. It seems too tacky to me.
karakul-astrakhan-sheep fur etc.
must be a vintage piece as the shape is not very modern......
but looks very warm.....
jessica stam!
love her.
not the clothes.
kinda 80's in a bad way for my eyes.
I like your site but many of the comments are made by apparently shallow, callow youth whose only culture consists of the brand. And they are so puritanical: anti-smoking, and anti-fur (in lieu of a real moral life). They are always patronizing when you show an older woman (that "certain age" tag) which just reveals conceit about their youth. I laugh to myself when I think of them turning fifty--and that will happen sooner than they think.
It must drive you mad, all that pointless "where can I get that bag?"
It's enough to make me want to take up smoking.
Jessica Stam looks great, and I've never noticed that great mouth of hers!
Wow, what a rumour this pic has caused. And there is no sarkazm at all - somehow I was expecting this kind of comments :D
Who is Jessica Stem???? I honesty don't care about her, but I do care about clothes. Isn't the point of this blog about celebrating fashion in all its forms regardless of the wearer? (plus have you ever considered the fact that Sart might be deliberate in his choices - it is always better to err on the side on the conroversial than be bland!)
STAM!!!!!
Isn't she a model? I think so, yes!
My first instinct was to like this outfit - she looks very striking, and I always love grey. So what if she's a model?! Does that mean she's not human? Can't have personal style?
As for the fur debate, I agree that killing endangered animals for vanity is cruel, but what about vintage fur? Vintage anything is good for the planet. …And what about animals which are considered vermin, such as rabbits in Australia (overruning the native animals), and ditto for Australian possums in NZ: they are also considered vermin.
And as for style: YES YOU CAN HAVE IT ON A BUDGET!!! I manage to buy designer on sale or in charity/thrift shops or vintage boutiques where I do a lot of shopping. It's all about being creative and imaginative so that I can afford to have the occasional splurge on a fabulous, and yes, expensive item.
So whoever whined, "I'd be stylish too if I had pots of money" I say, cease with the sour grapes and consider other options (ie, as above).
I'll get off my soapbox now.
Love the hat with the hair..lovely combo
I love the hat, and the ray bans, i like the coat, but i don't like using fur
i love jessica stein!
Stam is one of the people who puts my country on the style map! The wintery outfit is striking, but I'm most drawn to her face in this shot. Lovely.
i loooove stam...and i love how her hair is all wavy like that outside of her hat...i would like to see a little more color, though.
Jessica - you can't omit her... her sophisticated beauty..
i looove her style. she's really cool with the wayfrarer!! gorgeous.
There seem to be a rather serious debate on wether or not Sart. should be posting pictures of celebrities. The whole idea of TheSartorialist is afterall, to spark inspiration and document stylishly dressed individuals, regardless of how well known they are or who they're wearing. I know some people who, despite wearing designer clothing and toting the 'It' bag, just comes off tacky and NOT chic/stylish. Jessica Stam may be a well recognized face, but her casual easy-going chic-ness is so well captured in this shot that I think if it was some other face under those dark sunnies, Sart would still have photographed her.
It's funny that even with those sunglasses on, Stam's lips and eyebrows are so her that it would be hard to think she was just another girl walking down the street.
This one I love.
she has the most amazing face, her arched eyebrows and big feline eyes :)
i love the raybans and the hat.. very warm and simple, but quite elegant.
from the neck up, she looks fantastic. the fur coat spoils the look, especially since it has to be real.
i definitely agree with anonymous@3:58PM, whoever is seen in theSartorialist, irregardless of whether famous or not, gotten any help from stylists/designers or not, the utmost point is if he/she "sparks any kind of inspiration" for that specific point in time.
WOW!!! this gunmetal-grey fur jacket with the huge black buttons paired with the black leggings and the oversized-bag, and mysterious addition of shades, is one exceptional Look in here.
Bravura! ;-)
I love the coat .. its chincilla and its real .. saw that on the coat magazine ... I love fur coat ..
How do you do for shoot models ? In the street, just meet them or with a rendez-vous ? Because you shooted a lot I think. I've seen in your book - I don't know how many you've got, I didn't know you before I've just to have this one for my birthday ! - Milla Jovovich, Jessica Stam, Ai Tominaga and Coco Rocha ! If I could meet a lot in the street..
