Comments on "On the Street....That Mix, Paris"
Love the shoes!
And the knees!
Love her hat and her Balenciaga(?) sandals. Some women can just pull anything off.
I can see some beauty in every other photo you've posted but this.... this is a truly hideous outfit.
La Rue de l'Universite non? Fab style - love the Peruvian/oriental/explorateuse/Scots(?) style going on; a really splendid melange. Dare I say that a more congenenial background than the gum spattered trottoirs of la rive gauche would have made for an even more striking picture? How wonderful if you could have enticed this lady into (e.g.) the Musee de la Chasse et de la Nature where her multicultural Indiana Jones-couture style would have been right at home!
She looks like Ralph Lauren's muse.
crazy about the hat, scarf colors, accented by that wonderful bright blue bag - who's bag is it?
The whole outfit is perfection!
Just wanted to let you know that when I'm having a crappy day, I take a trip over to The Sartorialist, and it always gives me a lift. You're such a great photographer, and there's something about your images that makes me think you have some special ability to connect with your subjects. Yes, their clothes are fabulous. But you're bringing out the best in them. Wonderful portraits! Thanks so much.
way cool!
I love the foulard and the hat! she looks great!
I recently discover this blog. It is gorgeous. Thanks.
I'm just not getting these looks from Paris. They look so forced to me. If someone can explain, please do.
Does she have two bright blue bags?
Love the hat! It goes together with this outfit so well. I can just imagine it with a pair of skinny jeans, brown boots and a balck shirt - ohh. Just lovely!!
Subtle colours and wonderful scarves. Fabulous.
wow, i love this look, particularly the scarf, pants and shoes. she clearly has a fantastic eye.
Cowboy chic!! I love the hat and the fringed scarf. They go together very nicely.
Congratulations on the art exhibition. Will drop in this weekend to check it out.
Again, a very nice mix and matching thing going on here..I can't do it myself (sigh), but it looks great on her.
I particularly like her scarf.
And what is wrong with a "forced" look if it works?
Sorry but sometimes less is more …
That's amazing to meet a girl wearig those shoes and this kind of scarf on the Parisian streets!
She looks pissed off
Relax lady, you are in paris no?
Her scarf is so beautiful!
Maybe it's just the way the scarf is draped in this photo, but it positively truncates her. AND SHE'S GORGEOUS. Why anyone would want to wander around Paris looking like a hobit is beyond me. But, honestly, besides the egregiously awful scarf, c'est magnifique! The silky texture of those green pants with the grey sock and hardwared shoes, the length of the coat, the two blue bags--it's all really beautifully textured and nuanced. I love the hat.
Now, wrap the scarf, please.
How funny that there are such widely varying comments! I think she and her style are just amazing, in a good way. That scarf is so beautiful.
OMG! That is amazing!
Oh my. I get the sense that when she was getting dressed this morning she was determined to include all of her favorite pieces in one ensemble. Two bags, perhaps two scarves, her beloved hat, and appropriately quirky designer pants and shoes. And yet I wish I could pull off just this type of designer-tinged nonchalant look myself.
I'm feeling some kind of Argentinian gaucho type vibe here - which is a rather lovely thing to find on the streets of Paris.
Ok maybe a gaucho wouldn't wear funny shoes like that. But the scarf is awesome...
That's a lotta look. Love the hat!
Over the top, but not out of control. She puts several dramatic pieces together without getting a harsh, clashy effect. Gotta love it!
I'd have the hat and scarf. Please.
Love the shoes
adventureuse indeed! It's a little like she just came back from a trip around the world (or the Americas, anyway) and is now a visible journal ... but we're seeing that kind of "Victorian/Edwardian/aesthete/explorer" thing in some of the new menswear lines, too - is it a revival? A look back 100 years?
Wow. Did I read this outfit all wrong. From the small photo I thought she was wearing some sort of weird embroidered chaps --a la Buffalo Bill! I guess it was the hat that made me think in this direction.
Once again, a character one could build a story on. This one lives in Texas, and desperately wants to go to Paris.
Absolutely love the scarf.
She looks ridiculous. Kind of like a French rodeo clown.
Beautiful scarf.
I don't understand what's happening on the legs, but I like the silhouette it creates.
A little surprised by the gum polkadots on the sidewalk...I never knew Parisians were such gum hawkers! (Maybe the tourists are to blame? :^)
I love the whole mix, from the scarf and hat, to the Balenciaga sandals and baggy pants. Brilliant!
this looks like she took all her favorite things from her wardrobe and wore them at once..sorry, not working.
FINALLY!!! The lego shoes!!!!!
Hmmm. A little too much thought went into this perhaps.
obviously she's super cool. Sh'e fabulous. That blue bag cheapens her though, takes away the depth of the whole aesthetic. Boo.
Otherwise, she's fabulous.
bag lady Chic 2008...
She's way too young to look this bad.
So overdone and I suspect she knows it. Much respect all the same for going for broke.
there is a fine line between ecclectic and absurd. this look is definitely walking it. interesting, but one cant' help wondering how hard she was trying not to try.
For really fabulous ecclectic style, you should come and shoot in Montreal .
What? How? Who? When? Where? Why? You certainly find them, Sart. Mechanical Vintage in an Indiana Jones hat is lokk that doesn't work for me.
interesting
There is quite a lot to be said about this outfit. I cant't tell if I love it or hate it, all I can say is that it desperately needs a smile, any slight small smile would do!
She is experimental poetry. The scarf is wild and I always love people who dare to wear hats like this.
It's lovely to see that the young women of Paris haven't lost the edge of youth. Here (Britain) they all seem to dress like porn queens or their mothers, boring!
YEE HAW!
This is great. Personality, style, verve and finesse! So many strong elements, but the rich colors and textures blend together very nicely.
BTW- Why would we blame the gum on the tourists, "whyioughtta"? Is it so hard to believe that this country filled with smokers might be filled with just as many "gum hawkers"???
This pains me. She is wearing $4,000 (or is it $2,000?) Balenciaga sandals and jodhpurs yet she makes them look so.. not chic. Next time you see these shoes PLEASE take up close pictures of them.
yes, i think this look is cluttered and awful. if those weren't obviously designer pieces, would any of you still like her outfit? each item is nice, but wearing 15 attention-grabbing items together never looks good.
I was listening to folk music (Thao With The Get Down Stay Down, to be exact)when I opened the page. I thought how ironic it would be if their was someone dressed folksy on the page. My first thought when I saw this one, with blurred eyes, was "cowgirl". She's brave to do that in Paris.
props to her for trying this...I'm not sure whether I hate it or not
for me, if you're going to wear something so eclectic and crazy, it would help if you didn't have a scowl on your face...she looks utterly unapproachable and unlikeable
like the kind of girl who thinks she's too cool and clever to even associate with you
I don't like it when the clothes wear the person. The person should wear the clothes. Too much.
hey - i just want to remind all of us that some of the people on the pics will come and read the comments that we write about them. they were super nice to let sart take pictures of them, so it's not super cool when they read negative comments that don't have so much to do with style, like the comment about the girl not smiling etc, i found it a little borderline, and it really did not have much to do with a sartorialist comment. my comment is not sartorialist either, but i got a little tired of people forgetting that the subjects on the pics are willing to be exposed. this takes (a little) courage, so don't be so ruthless.
Since when are we commenting on costumes?
I had to call to my daughter and show her my French twin!
It is too bad that the comments made are mostly about" fixing her up", changing this or that...it is, after all, a moment recorded.
Who are we to change her, she's alright and, I have to say, a refreshing change from American mall style or studied hipsters or clueless suburbanites from the hinterland. Like a breath of damp, cool, Gauloise scented air blowing in from the Pampas or the rue de Saint Pere.
Valentina!
Ooh, I was just going to comment a few days ago and suggest that you hunt down this woman and take a photo of her, because she has such a great sense of style.
I can't believe someone other than Posh Spice bought those hideous Balenciaga shoes. Hahahha. They are just comical.
Too much of everything, imo. It looks like the outfit is wearing her, rather than the other way around.
Who is she? She looks like a tall Isabelle Huppert.
Hooray for Francoise - why should these people smile for us? They're living their lives not preening to impress a bunch of internet anonymities.
There is nothing worse than some guy in the street saying "cheer up, love" - and this is the internet equivalent. grrrrrrrrr.
paris texas
wow wow wow! FANTASTIC. this is one of my favorites in a LONG time...
If it isn't Calamity Jane from Deadwood... french girl has the western blues!
You can do whatever you want when you get dress, Style is about freedom. Sometimes you can be a clown if you like.
When it comes to fashion I remember not to take myself so seriously, life's too short and at the end we all die... so why not be a cowgirl in Paris! sounds good to me. Luv the pants.
that scarf or pashmina is lovely! the flowers embroidered are very nice! but I dont like how she combine with the cowboy hat...
apart from that i think that blue shoes are the best!
this begs the question .. is there anything left in her closet?
as separates, everything here would be beautiful. but put together in this eli cash(roayl tenenbaums) sort of way is just too much for the eye.
although, i will say that this girl must be the poster-child of self confidence
i also cannot figure out if i like or dislike this look but noticed upon further inspection that more of it matched than i initially thought: the hat to the fringe of the scarf, the socks to the second scarf wrapped tightly around her neck, the pants and bags to the embroidery of the scarf... i know one thing for sure, i absolutely love those pants especially against the black and grey at the ankles.
I like all the pieces of this outfit except the bag and shoes. However, the scarf while lovely is too big for the rest. There's nothing wrong with trying for the cowgirl look in Paris. Try again love. There's no rule that you have to smile for the photographer either.

sorry, but i think coco chanel's rule about removing one accessory would have made this look more pleasing to my eye.
ha! This is how I dress!
(i bet you she got half of this from charity shops!)
I love the Balenciaga heels, jodhpurs, and bag(s). I really like the texture of the coat and the grey at the neck.
This looks makes no sense to me.
Young, bold, sophisticated, and taking control of fashion. No designer put that together -- she owns this look.
And let's speculate how she did it -- got up in the morning and decided she really wanted to wear those pants. That color suggested the scarf. Hmmm, there's a little blue in the scarf, so, maybe the turtleneck; no, too much -- cover it with a white shirt to knock it back a little; fine, just at the neck. Then, oh, yeah, the blue socks, cool. Then, let's see the black coat will be fine and that means these fabulous shoes will work; just heavy enough to balance the pants legs. Now what, too drab; yes, punch up that blue again with the bag, no the two bags. And it's cold; where's that hat ... there, just right with the fringe; it works.
Personally I'm a paid-up member of the "less is not more, less is just less" school of dressing, but I can't concentrate on the outfit at all as she looks to me as if she's about to burst into tears at any moment and it's making her look little-girl-lost under all those heaps of clothes. I really do hope she didn't actually feel as sad as she looked right at that moment...
I think this look is tremendously well put together, and the thing that is making it appear cluttered is the small cross-body bag. If she took that off, it'd be really good.
YAY! finally someone gorgeous works the LEGO SHOES in real life! fabulous!
This is the real "Paris-Texas" look.
I like it.
It's been two months since this photo was posted and I still find myself coming back to it in order to be re-inspired by this girl....and I'm a guy....it's that good. Some people may say that it's a little too much, but that's the romance of it. Some people that have the freedom to dress how they like everyday need to continually inspire themselves, and she and I seem to share this. Just seeing someone in an ensemble like this says so much about the person, and one of the things it says to me is that she doesn't care what people may think about her outfit, she is dressing for HERSELF. And not everyone has to smile, maybe she doesn't feel like it. I know if I passed her on the street I would be blown away.
valentina who??? who is this mystery woman?
GREAT!!!

This wintry folk-festival look is fabulous - she is not afraid to churn knits and hats and various blues into one playful ensamble!
