On the Street....Puffer with Bungee, Soho

I ran into my friend Paul this weekend and I couldn't stop looking at how well his puffer coat fit at the waist.
The secret was that he pulled the bungee cord tight at the waist

I have a Jil Sander puffer coat that I love but it doesn't have that bungee cord in the bottom.
Unless I wear it with slim jeans I end up feeling too square.

lesson learned - no puffer without the bungee (sounds like something Kanye would rap about)

Great photo, Sart! This pic is all about the amazingly rich, earthy colours going on here. A beautiful blend. Very nice.

I'm not sure about the down-filled ski jacket (a.k.a. 'puffer'). Same jacket, different name, apparently. I didn't like them when they first came out in the late 1970s. These things periodically come back into fashion every few years and they look unfortunate every time, IMVHO. There are better choices of winter coat available.

Blogger Shannon said ... (9:05 AM) :

Pass the bungee on the left hand side....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:13 AM) :

i got myself a totem bag, but im not THAT sure about it (even when i think its really cool and functional)... so, everytime i see a guy doint this great, i kinda get brave to use mine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:22 AM) :

funny you should write about this, as i was thinking of the same thing. i just bought a moncler in paris and most models (at least the ones that end around the waist) dont have cords and I really hesitated when purchasing. that said, it fits quite well, very slim, though it does rise up a little when sitting down. i recommend the monclers.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:43 AM) :

He even makes those shoes look hip.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:50 AM) :

Carhartts?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:33 AM) :

Great look! Love the shoes as well - anybody knows what model they are?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:39 AM) :

The beard, the puffer and the mustard pants make for quite the handsome man.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 AM) :

i like the colours, and the way his overall choices (including the fit of the puffer jacket) mean that the workman's pants don't make him look sloppy.

what are the shoes, by the way?

apart from his other qualities, he also looks hot. :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 AM) :

Part of me feels that this outfit is a little "young" on a man his age, but he looks SEXY SEXY SEXY!

Hot friend.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

Can somebody please let me know where to buy a hat like that? I know they are quite common but I can't find them anywhere. Thanks,

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

I love these trousers! Not too tight, but not blousy or baggy. Any idea who they're by or where I can get 'em??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 AM) :

So it's OK to obsess a little over whether or not to pull the bungee cord tight or not, or to worry over one's profile (too square, too top heavy etc.)? Well, thank goodness. Your blog makes me feel I'm not alone. YOU are a generous soul.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (11:47 AM) :

Yes! Very nice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

Paul is really great looking! What field is he in?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:26 PM) :

Sounds like something Crocodile Dundee would say! Haha.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:46 PM) :

No matter how much I admired sartorial elegance of gentleman on photos from your trips to Milan, Paris... I always end up liking New Yorkers the most. Seem so believable and real.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:55 PM) :

Great coat... but who makes the bag?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

Love the look and the colors. The bag is bordering on matchy-matchy with the rest of the outfit, but still very cool

Blogger Butch said ... (2:03 PM) :

It's always about proportion, isn't it?

The nice waist fit here isn't just due to cynching but the fact that the jacket helps to define the guy's waist--that is, ends in exactly the right place.

Blogger DATALOG said ... (2:08 PM) :

i love this post on puffers-i also feel square wearing mine unless i'm in, alas, slim jeans.

...kanye could rhyme about puffers and bungees, good call.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

This picture, and Paul, is stunning. From the red and greens of the backdrop that are reproduced in his clothing, to Paul's stance. Yes, proportion (colour, scale) is very important here. But, what I find most striking is the movement that is captured in his body language and his expression: strength that is very much in motion.

The white soles of his shoes also make him look like he is floating and not quite in one place.

Blogger wideyed said ... (2:27 PM) :

Yummy palette! I thought his scarf was a turtleneck at first.

Blogger fraise said ... (2:50 PM) :

I love the colors in his outfit! They all go together wonderfully. The interplay of different textures is great too. He really pulls off this look nicely; it makes a huge difference when fit and color are well-thought-out.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:54 PM) :

love the brown color story here. so warm, so fall. nice fit of the pants also.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:56 PM) :

Yes, as far as puffers go, being aligned at the waist looks amazing, I actually have one from j.lindeberg that doesnt have any kind of bungee but sits directly at the top of my pants and it just looks soo good. I thought I was the only one. Great eye on that Photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:16 PM) :

The work pants are so dope, are those Red Wing boots?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

Andy Garcia look alike?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:24 PM) :

This surely is an easy look and fits to a January climate.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:58 PM) :

Anyone know where the boots are from?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:01 PM) :

This is a great look that I often rock myself - neutral, well-fitting, functional clothes inspired by workwear (though I'm more likely to top mine with a trucker cap). My friends mockingly call this the 'Gay Lumberjack' look. We have the Caten boys at Dsquared to thank for making common Canadian blue-collar gear chic and urban worldwide. I especially like Paul's workboot/sneaker hybrid shoes and rugged suede tote.

The key fit points with puffy down coats seem to be length and volume - too much of either makes the wearer look like the Michelin man. Paul has mastered both here, which Sart has rightly noted.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:24 PM) :

Hello Scott,

Do you know who created his bag?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:30 PM) :

Looks good, nice use of colors. Wonder how this will look with some lace-ups from Berluti/Santoni or sth.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:35 PM) :

What's that bag ? I love it !

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (4:59 PM) :

Paul is a very good looking man, with a great sense of colour and a face that reminds the one of a hero from ancient Greece.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:03 PM) :

I wish Paul was a friend of mine . . (sigh)

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (5:12 PM) :

He looks perfectly-proportioned. The colors are all great, too. I think my favorite part of this look is the trousers. I enlarged the photo and noticed they're done with same-fabric patch overlays (I'm sure there's a technical name for this, but I don't know it). That's very cool, and I would have missed it if I hadn't enlarged the photo. Also, the boots are completely new to me; I've never seen anything like them.

Blogger Susan B said ... (5:30 PM) :

Your friend Paul is a handsome fella. Nice mix of browns too; I love the camel pants with the darker browns.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:21 PM) :

Your friend Paul? The. Hotness. Oh, and his puffer looks great, too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:33 PM) :

or simply buy a dior or moncler puffer that actually fits..

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (7:47 PM) :

Paul, are you a REAL lumberjack, or one of those New York City lumberjacks? With the beard, it's hard to tell. Those boots look awfully clean, though ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:01 PM) :

What? No talk about his use of colour? He look really good and well put "to get her" uhh, together.

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:00 PM) :

just a tad too monochromatic for me, i wish there were a bit of colour peeking out from under the coat.

Blogger The Federalist said ... (11:02 PM) :

Sart,

I had my tailor insert an elastic band into my coat at the waist; mine is very similar to this gentleman's. While it is not the same as an adjustable bungie cord, it does serve the same purpose.

Regards,
Brett

the color scheme this guy has going on is just blows me away.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 AM) :

You have learnt the wrong lesson !
Puffers look terrific with or without a bungee.
All shapes and sizes are OK as long as the wearer feels comfortable with the shape.
I like mine XXXXL - I almost drown in them. I also like them fitted .
That is the thing with puffers : They are not supposed to look or feel like "ordinary" clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 AM) :

yes, i have one and it works better with the bungee!!!

I have a nice puffy coat from D&G and I had it altered and added a bungee.

Blogger ellastica said ... (1:02 AM) :

he's a total stud.
rugged yet put together, age-appropriate but hip.
goes to show that functional, cold-weather gear can look hot.

Blogger benson said ... (1:09 AM) :

Wow...Paul would look good with or without the bungee on the jacket :) gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:24 AM) :

love the mix of colours!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:32 AM) :

Don't beat yourself up about it, Scott. Sometimes it's just luck.

If I had $100 for every coat I try on that has its "center" nowhere near my center ... I'd buy a nice apartment.

But, yeah, there were a couple this season that needed that cord in the hem to prevent the "a-line" look - not to mention the rush of wind.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 AM) :

Really digging the pants. Love the slim, but not too slimness of it and the detail. The bag is also a nice little touch. Anyone know where it's from?

Blogger lala said ... (2:55 AM) :

this man knows how to dress , looks perfectly handsome. My worries about puffer coats is that the look becomes too bulky and makes a person look bigger than they really are; not on this guy. His coat is the right thickness, it looks warm and not bulky. thank you for the advice on pulling in the cords.

Blogger Diana said ... (3:25 AM) :

I love, when you are lost in tiny details (of ties, wrists, pant length, hair length, coat length, sleeve length pocket squares, fittings at the waist). I always read them very carefully and look at the pics to really see the differences, caused by these details. To be honest, i don't always succeed, but I don't give up.
E.g this guy looks perfect in my eyes, without discovering the perfect length of the jacket and the fitted waist :-))))

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:56 AM) :

Very Sexy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:05 AM) :

Love the colours :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:13 AM) :

I Like the shoes! From which brand are they?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:39 AM) :

hot hot hot, from the top of the hat to tip of his toes! smokin!

Blogger missdelite said ... (3:03 PM) :

Don't mess with a guy in a puffer!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:39 AM) :

Love the look, the look of the guy, and the colour palette he used. I want one of him!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:09 AM) :

if those are the dc workboot shoes..great idea but better off getting a real pair of boots.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 AM) :

"sounds like something Kanye would rap about"
ha ha i love your captions, Sart!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:16 AM) :

after having lived in Japan many years, this gentleman's look reminds me of the Japanese work casuals I'd see on every other guy walking down Ometasando

A fashion forward Serpico. Nice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 PM) :

Where are the boots from? Visvim?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:12 PM) :

The pants seem like they either inspired by carpenter pants our perhaps may be carpenters pants. Anyway yum. Very well put together, this is the best I have seen a puffy coat (as we call them in Canada) look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 AM) :

BORING... Color coordinated beyond repair! Drag those shoes behind a truck and shave off that Al Pacino "Cruising" Mustache...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:36 AM) :

Wow, this friend of yours is gorgeous. Ages just like George Clooney! And his clothes look well put together too!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 PM) :

This photo is sheer perfection. Everything about it radiates the sort of proportion and perspective we've come to associate with beauty (especially if you're a gay male -- and that would be me.)

Supreme props for everyone concerned and involved.

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (10:06 PM) :

Love the brown and mustard colors on him. Beautifully put together.

I think the runners are from Y-3... correct me if i am wrong.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 AM) :

First paragraph, pg. 58, Newsweek Magazine, Feb. 2008 - Rise of the Real People. I had to come to the blog and scan through dozens of pics to find the one described in that paragraph. Well worth the efforts. Thanks Newsweek. Nice to find something that wasn't related to war, slumping economy, or Islamic militants.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:27 PM) :

Yes, Y-3 shoes.
