I love the idea of this but in practice I have to say it isn't very flattering. The bulk of the pockets falling on the midsection makes him look a dumpy. Also, it would be necessary to always wear a thick long sleeve sweater in order for the sleeve length on the coat to make any visual sense.
I love my Barbour coats. Their styling and practical design features make them "objet type" and I'm sure I'll still be wearing them 20 years from now.
you are one of my daily places to go. I stay a litle watch and normaly proceed on my regular visits. I have seen that you take pictures on preaty much the same cities, paris, ny, milano, and a few others. I would like to see(if you allow me that litle wish) pictures of other countries and Cities like São Paulo(brazil), México, Abidjan(Cote d'Ivoire), Marrocos Cape Town and show us a diferent look over diferent looks world wide. perhaps on your vacations if you have time for that.
ok, that´s only a wish, people are allowed to dream... any way i love your pictures just the way they are. But i wonder the pictures you would take on a diferent environment.

it is strange because something about his look is very marc jacobs early 90's grunge...but I couldn't pin point it precisely, which is interesting. Disheveled sleek? His look looks good.

Why read so much into this outfit? It's just a guy who got dressed in whatever was clean-ish. I see nothing remarkable here whatsoever. This look could be achieved by grabbing any random pair of pants, boots and jacket from your local consignment store.
This strikes me as just an example of trying to impose "fashion" onto this for the sake of just trying to be different...that one cannot be "stylish" or "hip" without acknowledging all looks, regardless of whether actual attention or intent went into the outfit.

I think this looks great. I wish I had the ultra-lean build to pull it off. Barbour is one of those old-school brands you want to love because of the quality/cost ratio, but I hate the cavernous cut of the jackets (and I'm of average build). Somehow this guy has got it right.
I wish The Sartorialist featured more of this type of menswear alongside the nice, but improbably natty, usual buttoned-up fare Scott is so fond of.

Agree with jack daniel; with ribbing at the bottom and cuffs (what you see in photo is probably the sleeve-ends of a sweater), the jacket would be transformed into an elongated bomber jacket--a Barbour bomber, perfect with low-slung jeans, a surrealistic riff like the multiple collars at Viktor & Rolf couple seasons back...

That's the women's utility jacket - fitted, four pockets (Hey, I worked in the park avenue store). Occasionall guys tried on the womens, but not often. Personally, i think a size up would have been better- That jacket is cut tight anyway, so he would have been able to pull of Homo ono's idea.
I'm surprised by the amount of negative comments because this guy is "grungy," which he really isn't if you see real grunge everyday. Anyway, I would appreciate a little bit more diversity like this, I get sick of seeing buttoned-up men in all the pictures. Thanks for this look.
even though his look is simple and it might not be a glamorous outfit, his style comes through. For this outfit i notice that it was still neatly put together for example his pants being tucked into his shoes, his jacket nicely zipped up, and both his sleeves are at the same length.... also the facial expression, the paleness of his skin, his posture,and his careless hair presents his character and it totally gets to you which is what makes this photo so interesting

the barbour waxed cotton jacket is pure perfection of form/function. always stylish, never trendy. i can honestly say that mine is one of the best things i've ever owned and will continue to be so forever.
but if you wear it(or anything else)too small just to be hip, you lose the point. slim fit is one thing, simply too small is a silly thing.
surely, there is an eight year old boy somewhere (in the british countryside) who would do this tiny barbour more justice.
first off, everyone telling scott to stop shooting people like this...shut up! this kid has a lot of style in his outfit and i feel like i dress sorta like this sometimes. and secondly, those boots rule, i like how they kind of look slim and low profile, any ideas what they are? anyone? keep up the great work sart!

barbour coats? i cant stand them.. every teenybopper in my class had it when i was in high school, the classroom smelled disgusting becuase of those hideous coats..
of course i love your posts with spiffed up men in suits and those parissen women in highly covetable dresses and shoes but i am in total appreciation of effortless, real, unpretentious style like this too. sometimes i yearn for it after failed attempts of looking immaculate
why does this work? if i put that on (mind you i am female) i would look crap. if my boyfriend put that on he also would look crap. i gather its attitude and his way of life. cant be anything else. so keep up this street stuf, its far more interesting than the cult of personality bs that we have seen of late. we can get that from expensive magazines.

I don't know how a Barbour can be 'grunge'; it's the epitome of the English country gent. I rather like how by wearing a shrunk down/woman's version on what looks like a pretty tall frame in a very urban environment this guy is kind of subverting the whole Home Counties berk with a gun that has so long been Barbour's classic/core frame of reference.

to begin with i just want to say that i think is a pretty killer outfit. not exactly crazy original or particularly flamboyant but still well worn and i think, stylish.
for all of those saying grunge has no place on the sartorialist i would like to first point out that grunge, although not haute couture, is still a valid form of fashion expression.
and secondly as far as i can see the whole point of the sartorialist is to be inspired by the smaller elements of peoples personal styles and the innovative ways they may use clothing to express themselves, not necesarily to see an outfit in its entirety and define it as stylish or not.

if you are tall and on the thinner side, this is the only way a barbour will fit your body -- they are cut very boxy...

I LOVE the proportions on this.
-The length of the sleeves acentuates his height. The tappered jeans, though not loose shows how he's not insecure by his height.
-The shoes are a nice finish, especially hugging the pants in to give it a "finish" look.
-the sweater's collar on the top coming out of the jacket is also a right length that doesn't look too sloppy or out of place.
-Sometimes dressing in monotone may get boring but the subtle colors of the shoes and the stark shades of black gives it this refreshing look.

I love my Barbour coats, and have for over twenty years. I even wear one of my fathers, heavily worn.
I understand style and what this young fellow with the nice hair is attempting to do, but it looks as though he is wearing an outgrown hand-me-down. To sum up my thoughts: buy a coat that fits.
