Menswear on The Sartorialist
Recently I have received a few concerned emails regarding the ratio of mens photos compared to women's. I can assure it this is not a systematic shift in approach but simple the fact that I have just come out of a month of women's collections and a lack to men to shoot in China.
I think one of the strength of this blog is it is very human and not corporately driven. It would be easy for me to take more photos just to even things out but I will never do that.
By the same token, (my dads favorite phrase) Jan and June are usually mens heavy because of Pitti Uomo and the mens collections.
thanks for you understanding.

oh man, you should come to Memphis. the african american ministers wear the best combinations. come for the COGIC convention this month.
WOW!
The red flower, yellow scarf and blue eyes set against all those gorgeous browns blows my mind!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE him!
Thank you, Sart, for keeping this blog so artistically pure and human! I always find beauty and inspiritation in each and every post. It's such a lovely breath of fresh air from my un-inspiring work day.
do people seriously have nothing better to do than complain about the ratio of men vs women on your blog? sheesh!
Pocket square, flower, stripey tie, hat...it is great when someone can put several over-the-top things together without dissonance!
man this gentleman looks good! i love everything about his outfit, especially the splash of color with the handkerchief and rose. way to go!
about the mens vs. womens coverage: i've never thought one way or the other about it. i'm interested in seeing what Sart finds - whether it's guys or gals. I'd love to see some architecture pics, as well, but i suppose that's a different blog. Thanks, Sart!
Question on the picture for your opinions. Doesn't wearing a flower in his lapel along with a pocket square overbalance the left side?
I really appreciate that you, Scott, are not allowing this site to become another venue incorporated into somebody's "integrated" marketing campaign. Your photos would otherwise feature subjects and "trends" pimped- yes, pimped- by large mags in their best-dressed lists. Your site, in my opinion, is valuable because of its ebb and flow. It does not smack of some overarching strategy. The veneer on those things is always thin, flimsy and cheap.
Keep doing what YOU want to do. That's the only reason we all visit.
and we thank you.:0
Now, that is how a gentleman should dress. He is stylish without being trendy. The hat is great - I wear hats and wish more men would wear them.
Goodness, the epitome of dapper! The man has cojones to wear a bowler AND button flower AND pocket square AND not come off as an all-too-self-aware effete dandy.
And as a feminist,I don't find the male/female ratio to be a problem. For many decades now, the male peacock in the fashion world has ceded his plumage to the hen.
Your dad knows who Uomo is? That's Brills.
This gentleman -- class.
The jacket's over-scaled, but all the touches, and particularly the hat, which is completely winning, make this gent genuinely stylish.
I understand! Thank you for not being corporately driven. I love your blog.
An elegant tke on brown!
Darling and dapper! I love this!
I would like to see more men on the blog.
I would also like to see more "Men on the Street" as you were originally doing. Being in fashion, i draw more from that.
The pictures taken in and around the shows... I can see those clothes online or in magazines.
For the love of the blessed angels: this man chases people in the street so we can sit on our duffs and spit either drool or drivel out of our mouths about what people are wearing!
Lighten up and let Sart do his work. Otherwise, open your wallet and commission him for something.
mltt
This nattily dressed gentleman could have been my grandfather on his first trip abroad in the 50s-- only my grandfather's suit was double-breasted,and his hat different and set at a rakish angle and he had no boutonniere and he wasn't American ...
Let me get this straight? You want me to steal? Whoops, that was Al Munday in "It Takes a Thief" So, Let me get this straight? Some are complaining about too many femmes? Please...don't stop.
I really admire you for not giving in to what commenters think you to do. This is your blog-your photos, your choices. I don't get why people think they should have any say in what YOU do with it.
Great work as usual.
He looks like a true gentleman!
I personally have no problem with the ratio of women to men postings- I completely understand that your focus in on style the style of the person, not their sex. If at times that means that there are more photos of a particular gender, then so be it.
Keep up the fantastic work Sart!
Where or where was this taken?? New York???
I LOVE IT. Brown is a lovely, underestimated color.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!
Shoot whatever you want--it's your blog!
Although the male photos are slim, they are always stunning. Thanks for keeping it real on the balance of photographs. No one should be able to tell you how or how not to run you're site. As long as you're doing what you want, that's all that matters.
What a distinguished looking gentleman; the pocket square and (to a lesser extent) the flower drive it home. Most excellent.
PS: To anonymous @ 10:52: Pocket square = "Over the top?" What? Does not compute.
Great style, exclamation point.
All I see on this blog are pictures of fabulously or interestingly dressed people, I didn't even notice the men/women ratio until someone pointed that out!
At any rate, I don't think this is something that we should be worried about, as long as Sart's pictures continue to give us inspiration in fashion.
never feel you need to 'even" things out .quality not quantity , style not sterotypical.
i think you have a better eye for menswear.
besides, how many well dressed women in proportion to men, here there...everywhere.
The nature of fashion dynamics and cultural identities make it that way...
Maybe those style hungry men know of parallel universes where men are the majority when it comes to fashion consumption and assumption
Saying I miss the shots of Scott's "Man on the Street" is not a criticism. I DO enjoy all of his shots.
I'm simply stating that I enjoy the originality and spontaneity that I see from the well-dressed Everyman.
people always want something to complain about. other people's success is just too much for 'em. i don't know about them, but i'm having a good time at your blog.
It's not really a complaint to say that, in my case, when I got into the Sartorialist lo these many years ago, it was because it was almost entirely a menswear blog at the time, and I think you have a really good eye for menswear, Sart. I like the photos of women just fine, I just miss the men.
what a gentleman. i love this pic.
as for your ratio -who cares? for what it is worth women spend more money and time on clothing in general so it would only make sense that things end up this way. it isn't a big deal IMHO.
great work i love you blog!
Take pictures of what inspires you. Thats what we love about you. Forget ratio's!!!!!!
Another fine gent! I love ALL your photos whether it's men, women, old, young, beautiful and maybe not so beautiful - one thing about them is that they are all striking in some way and provoke a reaction. I think your dedication to the cause - showing us who's out there and how they look - is fantastic! Keep on keeping on and don't go changin! Peace, lbw xx
