Hong Kong & Beijing This Week!!

I will be in Hong Kong & Beijing this week to attend the opening of the new Lane Crawford store in Beijing.

I have never been to Asia so this will be quite an adventure.

I will try to keep things on a regular schedule but just keep checking back because I have no idea what will happen.

I understand that blogspot might be blocked in Mainland China so I might have to email images to a friend for them to update etc. Either way, I will try very hard to create some images that capture the essence of this trip and what I see.

Thanks to Sarah Rutson (a Sartorialist regular) of Lane Crawford for making this happen.

Stay tuned

Dear Sarto, Sir, I do believe you have been to Singapore before? When I last looked [a minute ago] out of my window, we were still in Asia!
Yours Truly,
A. [of Singapore]

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

Enjoy your trip, I am sure you will like it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

So glad that you're finally making it over to Asia, am particularly looking forward to your photographs from HK. Hopefully you'll find plenty of subjects here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:45 AM) :

It would be interesting to read about your experiences of Hong Kong tailoring culture. There are so many urban myths about backstreet tailors who can throw together a bespoke suit in 24 hours. Why not confirm whether they meet the true Sartorialist standard, or whether the suits just make you look like a pimp?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:46 AM) :

At lasssssst! Mr Sart in MY part of town. Can't wait to see what you make of Hong Kong style. It's not cold enough yet to break out the tweed jackets and the woolies, but the layering is starting to happen as the mercury falls. Welcome to HK!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 AM) :

When and where will you be in Hong Kong? Quite a few of us are fans of yours here, and we'd love to be able to meet you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:43 AM) :

The Sart in Asia...that's actually never happened before..

Blogger Athena said ... (2:12 PM) :

Awesome. As someone who has lived in Asia, it'll be interesting to see what catches your eye since style over there can be quite different than here or European classics. Oh, now I miss Hong Kong again. Must live vicariously through you!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:31 PM) :

i can't wait to see your photos from hong kong. please don't limit yourself to what you may find in central, the soho neighborhood, or tsim sha tshui: definitely walk around causeway bay (on hk island) and mongkok (on kowloon) where more of the locals are. a lot of the most stylish locals are shopping or working in the boutique malls.

Blogger PeaceSignWithChocolate said ... (2:48 PM) :

Sweet. Can't wait for the pics.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:05 PM) :

Great! Asia has amazing fashion so I can't wait to see your photos.

I'm also bracing for the onslaught of "these are ALL clearly references to Japanese ancient Heian fashion" type remarks from your devoted commentators.

Blogger J said ... (3:43 PM) :

How exciting!

I am looking forward to it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:57 PM) :

Hello Dear Sart
As a big fan I feel that I must tell you that you can infact access some blogspot domains in mainland China, I am a Swede living in Paris, and I lived in Shanghai not to long ago and checked photos here regularly.
But, stuff like that varies in China too.
Enjoy your trip!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:06 PM) :

Please also make your way to Seoul, South Korea.
I would love to take you to dinner! This is my first time living in Asia and I may never come back to the States. Take a look at the Anne Demeulemeester flagship store in Apgujeong (wealthiest area in Seoul) that I just photographed. Fashion and architecture are changing this city for the better.

oh - and my sister lived on mainland china for two years so I (at least) will be completely understanding if things take a bit longer than usual to appear on your blog. The images will surely be worth the wait.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:16 PM) :

Hello! I've been an avid reader of The Satorialist. A lot of my wardrobe has been inspired by many of the styles shown here. I hope your trip to Asia is spectacular. You should visit Korea too :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:39 PM) :

OMG! You are one LUCKY man! I've been going to HK every year since I was 9, it's pretty much my 2nd home, except this year, I'm stuck in Milan. I miss HK..I know it sounds cliche, but it really is a city where east meets west, and it's got so much life! I miss all the noise! Milan is so...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:58 PM) :

Hong Kong is, as you know, a tiny place. But, one area dramatically differs from another. To see the difference, go to Lan Kwai Fong and then to Mong Kok. Wong Kar-wai based a couple of his films in these districts. If you're wondering what the differences are... one example: in Lan Kwai Fong, you can't get by without English; in Mong Kok, barely anyone will understand you if you speak in English.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:04 PM) :

i'm extremely excited to hear that u're going to hng kong, but i'll not be bac coz i'm surrently in england, sob sob...when will be the next time you going to hk?

Wishing u a nice trip and enjoy your days in Beijing!

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:05 PM) :

I'm sure ur blog unblock in china mainland, welcome to beijing! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:16 PM) :

I don't have any problem to access your blog from Beijing, but if you do have any problems you can install Anonymizer from here: http://hewomenzaiyiqihenanquan.com/ and it will get you past the firewall ;-)

Beijing has some very interesting fashions - you'll find a lot to feast your eyes and camera on here. Cheap tailors in Beijing are as abundant as cheap suits, but there are a few good ones around. Check out the designer shops in Guomao and ShinKong to see where the Beijing elite shop. For more local fashion go to XiDan. Looking forward to see your posts!

Mr Sartorialist in Beijing, Thanks!! I am a parisienne working in Beijing and I am a really fan of your blog. the fact that people in beijing are much more daring than in Europe can be a true inspiration and I am quite sure you ll find great shots to take, both in trendy places (please, jump to LAN, the new bar of Philippe Starck) and in hutongs (traditional chinese streets). I am sure you have a very tight schedule but if you have just 2 minutes I would be so glad to meet you. And of course, I would be honored if you need a guide to find your way out of hutongs!
peut etre a bientot! Chloe.

Being a Hong Kong native and a frequent visitor of this site, I can tell you now that you will undoubtedly love the city. Make sure to check out both Hong Kong island and Kowloon (which is connected to mainland China), as I find that fashions differ greatly depending on which side of the harbour you are on. I am so looking forward to seeing the life and style that you capture in this wonderful city!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:49 AM) :

Hey Sart, please capture some of the essence of the HK street styling and tailoring. It'll be most wonderful to see how they dress in comparison to the people you normally take pictures of.

Most of all, enjoy your trip. I've been to HK before and everyone there is as friendly as they can be.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:54 AM) :

You've never been to Asia? What an oversight! You must visit Tokyo, it is one of the most fashionable cities in the world in my opinion.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:34 AM) :

Welcome to Hong Kong...So many tailors, so many fabrics, are you going to have a suit made for you during your stay ?
As for me, I will make sure to check my sleeve length and my cuffs when crossing the street in Central...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:02 AM) :

Sart, I am a journalist from London in Hong Kong for a few days. May I suggest you try sitting in the mezzanine cafe of the Landmark shopping mall (if you're in the right place you'll be able to see Prada and Tod's). There was a wonderfully traditional old Chinese man there today. Very dapper.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:35 AM) :

welcome to asia indeed! i wonder how many HKers would be game enough to let you shoot them :)

Blogger Landis said ... (6:43 AM) :

alright. that does it.

i'm going to be at the opening too.

if you don't come say hi to me,
i will NEVER forgive you.

and i promise to wear something vaguely interesting, so you can find me.

perhaps it'll even be off the shoulder.

Blogger Landis said ... (6:49 AM) :

ah, and by the way. . .

in hong kong (i've just been here a week, so it's a bit rough around the edges), i would recommend eating at lumiere for some truly wonderful szechuan fusion, and the view out to kowloon cant be beaten, get a window table. for local, try the red pepper, also szechuan (sorry, it's tim and my favorite) for a more authentic take on the fare.

lunch, try "frog face fish", a more cosmo eatery, a bit up the hill, but chic, and around the corner from the margiela boutique. which is also worth a drop in, quite impressive even compared with his other stores. if you check my blog, you will see i have already done damage there.

joyce (the store) is amazing, if for no other reason than the visual display. i think lane crawford puts barney's to shame (in both menswear selection and display), but joyce is a rather rareified take on menswear. i think you'll love it.

i'll look for you in beijing. . .

Finally, you make it to our homeland HK, really glad to hear so many good things about HK from you guys so far, I'm sure Sarah will take good care of you, hope you enjoy HK as much as Beijing. Pls do visit both JOYCE & LC and share your view about these 2 sister stores with us. The former has been the leader of style and good taste for over 30years, Mrs Ma (still) has the power that no one could top *ever* worldwide, whereas, LC is catching up, slowly but not so surely, yes, catching up... well give it time & we'll see... LC might be big, rich and well-filled, however rather commercially, when you can feel the TLC and heart from the JOYCE team... Bon voyage and see you around. (would you up for an interview?)

I really wonder about Beijing - how are things there style-wise? I am so curious, I'd love to see some street pics and just check if the Chinese keep up with the trends as I do not plan to travel there as long as China does not respect human rights. In fact, I wouldn't trade freedom of speech, thought and expression with all the Louis Vuitton bags of the planet.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:28 PM) :

Dear sart, i am local HK-er and your big fan. i don't know if your agenda has already been tightly-scheduled, but i have so much thoughts on things i think you should really see maybe you could consider.
briefly, i don't think you should waste too much time hanging around central & causewaybay. People around there are nothing much but fashion victms. People in central are big spenders, wannabes. They only go for high fashion, without much originality.
There is a second hand thrift store called Me. & G. in Mongkok. i often find lots of treasure in it, and i think its a very good place to find items that disguish yourself from the very dully-dressed crowd of hongkong people. its also rich in asian colours.
anyway, i believe Beijing would be way interesting. i have been there twice, i always finds it extremely fascinating. people there are vibrant, not merely with their looks, but with their inner charm. Everyone of them are uniquely stylish, and exceptionally charismatic. There are also a lot of interesting places to hang around apart from the fashion crowd too. Visit 798 art place, Commune at the great wall... just to name a few.
ENJOY YOUR STAY!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 PM) :

Nihao Mr Sartorialist,

I kind of think your tracking me. I take a glance at your blog from time to time and I can see that you went to cities like Antwerpen, LA, Milan, Paris just after me. And now you're heading HK where I'm right now located.

Anyway I easily picture what will be your photograph... fantastic. The city is amazing: a jungle of "stalacmite"

Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Welcome Mr. Sarto to our part of the world! It would be refreshing to see a different take (and hopefully some familiar faces) on your pages. Though HK is flooded by vuitton (real or otherwise), i hope to see pictures of men & women who are true satorialists and not just brandishing the latest "it" this or "it" that...

Just to clarify, the blocking of Internet sites in China varies by region and the day of the week. I live in Shandong Province, on the east coast, and blogspot is almost always blocked here by my service provider, China Telecom. It might be available in Shanghai or Beijing, but you never know from day to day or from place to place or from provider to provider (although there are only a few providers). I use TOR to burrow under the GFW.

I love Joyce and Lane Crawford and the chic men and women of Central, but to get a taste of local fashion be sure to check out little malls like Island Beverley in Causeway Bay for the more daring and perhaps flamboyant fashionistas. Hope to see you on the streets!

I spend a lot of time in Hong Kong for work and hope you love it as much as I. Others above have mentioned great places for people watching but I would add:
The lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel (especially in the lobby bar at sunset)
The Naked Ape store on Queens Road
Q8 also on Queens Road
Bankers waiting on glass elevators at HSBC, Central (my favorite building in the world)
Expats in Mid-levels and at the dive bars along the water in Stanley on Sunday afternoons.
Young people in Causeway Bay at night

And as others have said: You must go to Joyce. Both locations. And if you were going to Taipei I'd tell you where the Joyce outlet is.

Have a great trip!

Please hurry back, Scott, this place is in dire need of your photographer's eye. Would it be too much to ask you to load up on photos of attractive Asian women, whilst you're in Asia? I would be interested to see what they are wearing these days, purely for research purposes of course.

I can't wait to see what photos you get from Hong Kong and Beijing! I'm not saying that I don't love all the Euro-chic and stateside pics you take, but Asia will definitely be a nice change of pace. Have fun and be safe!

I don´t see fat people in your blog. Why?
I really like your photos, but everybody is so, so thin.

You can access blogspot in China if you install tor for your browser.

http://tor.eff.org/

It's free, and you can disable it when you don't need it.

I used it all this summer when I was in China.

it's really a pity that blogspot is forbidden in China mainland! Feel lucky that I am now in UK and free to browse your blog. Can't wait seeing your pictures taken in HongKong and China! Wish you a good journey and have fun! Welcome to China~
