After One Year - Mr. Terron Schaefer

Having developed a well-defined personal style doesn't mean never evolving that style.

How often have we seen someone who "found their look" in their 20's or 40's and have never really changed it since then.

I took the photo (bottom) of Terron about one year ago, I love how he has retained the very sophisticated nature of his "look" while still updating and trying something new.

Lets not make this about "I liked him more before.....or after" this post is not about that. it is about not been afraid to evolve and not letting yourself get stuck in a style rut.

The clean shaved, well groomed look made him look younger. It was a pleasant touch.

Blogger SartoriallyAddicted said ... (9:25 AM) :

If Terron is happy with his look that is all that matters. He does a good job of using the three button (and I bet a high two) to hide any weight gains. Great use of handkerchiefs.

Blogger Stoner Lines said ... (9:26 AM) :

If we're talking about clothes here, what changed?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 AM) :

There is a change. He is quite old and you can see it by looking at the photos.I think that even if you keep the same style or looks year after year it simply tells that you are quite confident of yourself. There are more important issues in life than those concerning how you look this year and how you look next year.

Blogger steph said ... (10:05 AM) :

Shave and a haircut, two bits.

Yes indeed, they both look good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:13 AM) :

I love the flowers in the breast pocket detail and the same pin on the lapel.

Blogger Deirdre said ... (10:29 AM) :

What a fabulous transformation.

I've been thinking a lot about how I'm going to make the move from older young woman to young older woman.

This guy did the transformation beautifully.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

I think hes very stylish with either look. Each evokes a very different feel, well somehow both avoiding being casual...but still comfortable ?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

Bravo Sart,

I liked your comment about not making it about before and after - such things prevent people from taking risks, something I struggle with in finding my own style. Your blog shows people taking risks all the time and that's what I love about it. He looks great!

Blogger Laura said ... (10:46 AM) :

What is the little pin (?) he wears in his buttonhole?

Blogger Butch said ... (10:59 AM) :

Gotta say, in terms of the cloths, I don't see an evolution so much as a variation on the theme of beautifully done and accessorized suit.

Now, eternal gratitude to anyone--you, Scott?--who can say once and for all what's going on behind the buttonhole that seems to involve, then and now, a cord of some kind....

Blogger Rice and Beans Vintage said ... (11:01 AM) :

A beautiful point, a lovely dressed man.

Blogger Sonia Levesque said ... (11:36 AM) :

Oh how I love THIS!

Transformation of oneself, without it being a total makeover is the spice of life. He did it well. We should all strive for "telling something new" with our life... and style is just one way to achieve that.

Blogger Colin Flora said ... (12:12 PM) :

I like the three-button suit, too. However, you can tell by the sleeve heads that that is no ordinary suit. He looks great.

Blogger smallcitystyles said ... (12:52 PM) :

So many people get stuck in a fashion rut. I suppose they do it because they feel it is easier than needing to go out and buy a sorts of new stuff.

Your example shows that it doesn't require extreme effort to update your style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:02 PM) :

Is that a metal heart in the buttonhole? It looks really good. A dandy touch without being silly on a more mature man. Shows his personality, and that he's not afraid to display it.

Blogger O!Lightning said ... (1:29 PM) :

I love his confidance in letting go of his old self, to have a bare and rather strong new self.

Blogger O!Lightning said ... (1:31 PM) :

it makes me think too, and not for the first time, you never know who someone has been.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:43 PM) :

To anonymous 9:30, I'm not sure if he is "quite old" or if you are "quite young" (interpret as you wish). Aside from that, I love the buttonhole pin, breast pocket details, and agree with butch that it's beautifully done variations on a theme.

Blogger Butch said ... (2:15 PM) :

Anonymous, 9:30, I hope you won't mind if I correct you. In neither photo is the gentleman "quite old." In the top shot he's probably around sixty.

I make this point not to defend geriatrics, but to try to get younger people, of whom I assume you're one, not to view the world quite so solipsistically.

Thank you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 PM) :

The "evolution" is interesting. Thank you for including a man - and an older one at that - in your "Look At Them Now" series.

Both looks are interesting. It's like he's gone from renegade to upgrade.

While I don't like facial hair when it comes to kissy time, Mr. Schaefer actually looked nice with his. What is has retained in his update, however, is that sense of grooming...even though there's less stuff on his face to groom.

Interesting,
mltt

Blogger stacy said ... (3:15 PM) :

Exactly! Similar to your post about the young lady who moved to New York, knew no one, and was THEN able to find HER own style, without fear of judgement from friends or family who could only see her one way.

The point is the same with this gentleman.

The thing is, we can gain confidence with age and become less concerned with how friends or family will react to our changes. AND...we can also surround ourselves with people that encourage and support our evolution in all aspects of our lives.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:28 PM) :

So confident and handsome looking...
He could and should run for President.
STYLE in capital letters.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:34 PM) :

This is no mutton dressed as lamb...this is a man who knows what he likes and knows how to wear it with confidence and ease.

He should give lessons!

Love the handkerchief and the lapel pin that show up in each picture.

Will you photograph him again next year?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:28 PM) :

As men begin to lose their hair, I think they look a lot better if they cut it short. This is a very good look for this gentleman- younger looking, less fussy, and very neat. Bravo!

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (8:39 PM) :

Evolving a look is a good thing to think about. I forget to do that and realize that I've got all the same clothes that I had from four years ago, and they're not necessarily pieces that deserve to be kept that long.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 PM) :

would love to know where he gets his suits - both appear to be bespoke

like his attention to detail - the pocket square, perfectly tied tie, lapel pin, and the hair - long or short it looks good

good choice

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:18 PM) :

It's amazing how much difference facial hair (or the lack of) and a different hair style can totally change a man's look.

Blogger jason said ... (11:55 PM) :

It's interesting, he seems to have gotten "looser," more creative looking later.

I like that.

Blogger MacGuffin said ... (1:39 AM) :

He looks great in both photos.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:50 AM) :

He's strikingly handsome in both. Sure, the shaving habits and haircuts are the most obvious difference, but I think he gives off a slightly different air in each. In both pictures, he does a beautiful job of showing how simple, clean elements can make for an uncommonly elegant whole. I do perceive a bit more of a visual juxtaposition in the newer photograph, however. In a good way.

Blogger Heidi said ... (5:41 AM) :

I love that facial hair he's got beforehand... and of course after a year - shaving it off just feels like a breath of fresh air... nice.

And there's nothing wrong with a great suit. With pinstripes, it's always fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:07 AM) :

Hmmmm .... somebody has to say something about 'teaching an old dawg new tricks'!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 PM) :

He looks like a class act - a gentleman.

Nice to see someone who wears clothes well and appears to be comfortable in them.

Nothing looks forced...

He is not fashionable, but oh so stylish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:13 AM) :

I think this shows what a huge difference the change in grooming alone can make. His style of dress is unchanged, but I wouldn't have thought this was the same person from one year to the next. I prefer the cleaner look now, but mostly admire his willingness to make such a drastic change.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:24 AM) :

To butch:I´m anonymous 9.30 am and I am not so young as you assumed. My husband and I are both 56 and I tell you that my husband looks much, much younger than the gent in this picture.Maybe you are young yourself and don´t have a clue of peoples ages. I stay with my opinion that this man is quite old-lots over 60.Don´t understand your reaction to this age business.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:33 PM) :

Wow - this guy has it together.

Nice to see someone who looks like a "gentleman" - so few of them around today.

Is he European or American?

Interesting accessories.

Love the pin in the lapel.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:14 AM) :

Great shot. He looks wonderful, as usual, and has quite a presence. This is really what it is all about.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:43 PM) :

I don't care what anyone says about him - full beard, long hair, clean shaven, short hair.

He ALWAYS looks fabulous.

I his style/manners and confidence!

He is a real "gent".

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 PM) :

"Rule, Britannia!"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 PM) :

dapper dude! whats that in the button hole on th lapel????

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 PM) :

I like his update. The buzz cut and clean face makes him seem more playful.

Blogger jestandefer said ... (12:44 AM) :

Regardless, shaven or unshaven, he always has amazing fashion sense and and pulls in meticulous details with great ease. he and his mother are my two fashion heros.
