What a nice photo! I appreciate seeing how a different faith from mine deals with the problem of looking fashionable while still adhering to strict dress-codes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:01 PM) :

it's really cool how they manage to incorporate traditional wear with modern clothing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:13 PM) :

Oh i like them! They look so lovely

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:15 PM) :

Aaaaaawesome!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

As the mother of a Muslim girl, thank you for this photo.

To the point, however, they look daring in their crisp whites!

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:34 PM) :

the coolest girls i´ve ever seen!

Blogger Martha said ... (4:44 PM) :

Oh, how awesome.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

what the? who the? yeeeeaaaah! super cool and subversive. love the expressions too. these two look up to no good and i like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

You think they consulted one another before going out? I find this matchy matchy young and cute. Brings a smile for sure.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:55 PM) :

Sart,

This is another reason I absolutely LOVE your site, everyone is included! I love their look, the ribbons are great!

Blogger sara star said ... (4:55 PM) :

Totally amazing! Everything except the shoes is great. Too bad they didn't take the style down to their feet.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:57 PM) :

Love the attitude and the tight pants. These pants are common in southern Asia. They are called Churidaar. often worn with long Kurtas or shirts.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:06 PM) :

what a picture ! it is amazing to see how people from a different cultural background adapt to "stylish" stockholm and still keep their roots - great job sart !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:08 PM) :

Beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:35 PM) :

I suddenly have a craving for doublemint gum.

Blogger notanotherblog said ... (5:42 PM) :

There's something very 60's Pierre Cardin or Rudi Gernreich about their ensemble. The picture made me day!

Blogger Bexia said ... (5:52 PM) :

This is why you're the best.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:56 PM) :

Wow! That is an amazing photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:09 PM) :

Going for controversy, eh, Sart? Keep it up. I've always been intrigued by the fashionable, hijab-wearing girls too. Many Islamic girls -- including those in full burqas -- are mad, mad, mad for fashion....and they'll often customize clothes to suit their conservative-dress requirements. Actually, there's a lot of stories and photos in this community if you're willing to mine it. I'll be curious to read the other comments on this pic....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:20 PM) :

Hard to define... It could be a religious thing, a traditional, or just a part of uniformed costumes from some event... However, it's a great photo.

Blogger c/e/d said ... (6:34 PM) :

i love how the girl on the right is muggin the camera. they're from the future.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:36 PM) :

Beautiful girls.

Nice to see young women wearing the hijab so proudly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:50 PM) :

wow hijab chic!

Blogger jkh said ... (7:04 PM) :

what really places this picture right on the borderline are the almost camouflage looking hijabs.

by default, by design... who knows...
but sart gets the time-life photographer of the year award for capturing this intellectually stimulating and sweet mixture

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:18 PM) :

They are beautiful girls, masha'allah. The pants aren't "appropriate" though, IMO. The crisp white, however, is very flattering.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:19 PM) :

Ah, they remind me of some of my students at CUNY! love them.

Blogger DeepBlueSea said ... (7:28 PM) :

Serendipity placed the matching pink and blue flags behind them! Spooky!

PS The two young women are awesome.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:38 PM) :

Eh, something out of a Todd Haynes film, right?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:58 PM) :

best pic ever

Blogger Holden said ... (9:56 PM) :

if you think this is good, then you haven't seen how fashionable muslim girls in Singapore dress.

Thank you for posting this picture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:07 PM) :

i live for quirky gorgeousness like this

Blogger Blaise said ... (11:14 PM) :

I like their pants..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:24 PM) :

Love it! Tres chic! Way to go!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 PM) :

Nice shot! Both look so confident and sexy.

Blogger MARIA H said ... (11:53 PM) :

futuristic in deed!

Blogger the *ubiquitous spectator* said ... (12:07 AM) :

i love this, surprising yet predictably crisp sart...i just wanted to repeat what someone else said, they seem TRULY FUTURISTIC and ahead of fashion, because they are transcending, dressing for religious and personal reasons shunning traditional fashion waves...love girls a head of the wave always

Blogger Alex said ... (12:45 AM) :

awesomely awesome

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 AM) :

Just wondering,,,,the girl on the left-does their religion allow them to reveal bare toes? She is wearing quite revealing sandals.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:21 AM) :

wow, there is something very, very subversive about this. they're wearing the hijab in the same spirit as the Iranian girls: everything south of the shoulders is a comment on what's covering their head.

got to get me some Churidaar, if that's what they are.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:58 AM) :

haha as an answer to "serendipity placed the matching pink and blue flags behind them". the flags are acctually RED and blue and they are the symbol for the oil company OK-Q8 in Sweden. :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:05 AM) :

These girls are so cute!

2001 A Space Odyssey... really. It's so stylish and modest and sweet.

I think this could be the next trend. Even for girls who don't wear the hijab or have no religious concerns, but just want to look sleek.

Right on, girls! Fantastic job.

(and, great photo, Sart. You never let us down.)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:10 AM) :

PS -- In the background - the flags with pink & blue linked rings that match the girls' ribbons -- did you notice that, Sart? Were the girls coming from an event there?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:29 AM) :

Anonymous: It's allowed to show the hands and feet

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:06 AM) :

omg i love those flags in the background that match their outfits!!! did you plan that sart? or did they perhaps plan it!? very cool.

i've always loved churidar pants. esp. when they gather at the ankles - so cute. these girls are totally pushing the limits - the practically see-through white of their pants, the almost-too-short tops, the ribbons giving the tops an empire waist and enhancing the bust... ROCK ON!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:16 AM) :

This style is very popular with young muslim girls in Sweden. Wearing all white with a touch of color. I agree they could have worn better shoes with the outfit.

I'm a muslim my self, i don't practice. But i love to see when young girls stand up and demand to be seen. In a religion that demand they hide them selfs.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:18 AM) :

so sweet, so pretty, so confident.. two lovely young women. I love their fierce attitude (evident in their eyes and how their heads are held high). I wish more women would try to look proud, strong and sexy, like these two.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:04 AM) :

anonymous 1:32. It depends on your islamic "derection". But it is usually permitted.

Most of all I like the expression on the girl's faces. They are fierce!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:15 AM) :

I don't think "Serendipity placed the matching pink and blue flags behind them", I think they're wearing some kind of 'uniforms' for a sport event or something, and probably the two colours are the teams' colors.
Actually they remind me of how muslim women are dressed when they compete at the Olympic Games...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:45 AM) :

If this girls can see beyond what their religion allows, why there still people trying to question their choice by expecting complience? Of course they are making a statement about their views about their bodies and thir minds. The futuristic aspect here is a move towards a new way of being defined by them and others.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

Interesting... As a Muslim woman who does not wear a headscarf, I find this awkward (yet not at all an unommon scene, for sure...): you are covering your hair (because it is provocative!) but have no problem wearing super tight pants.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:22 AM) :

YAY! Thank you, thank you, thank you Sart for noticing the incredibly stylish hijab wearing women! Come to Glasgow, which is full of them! Muslim women's wear has a wildly creative variety of fabrics, drapes and shapes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:51 AM) :

i have been seeing more and more muslim women work their scarves into beautiful fashionable outfits here in chicago. it's great! everyone has their own style and it can be recognized!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

@ 1:32 AM.

Yes, traditionally muslim women can show their face, hands, and feet.

It's nice to see so called "hijab chic" without the ridiculous D&G scarves, designer handbags, and face full of makeup!

Blogger daisy diana said ... (10:52 AM) :

wow! i mean to showcase a picture of girls from a diff faith ( one which is very tough on women's dressings ). awwwesomee!

you should drop by singapore then =)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 AM) :

Dear Sart,

thank you so much for taking and publishing this photo. Pictures like this make me proud to be swedish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 AM) :

Alot of young teenage muslim-girls looks like this in Stockholm, I think it's a good thing. They are sending out a good sign to other young people that different cultures can meet! They make something own of fashion but still wearing whats traditional in their culture!

Blogger HussahT said ... (12:53 PM) :

I am from Kuwait and I love your blog! I find you better than any fashion magazine because you show real people and its very inspiring! And I love how these two girls look modest yet fashionable.
Thanks for your lovely photos.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:24 PM) :

those aren't churidars, I think, they look like regular skinny jeans... But I don't think there's anything inappropriate about them. They're still all covered up! Just in their own way. I like their bemused expressions. They look like sisters.

but it is super awesome to see some cute looking hijabis on here :) And there is no restriction for muslims about open toes - those sandals are pretty :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:28 PM) :

Like a Diane Arbus photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:28 PM) :

They look so creative and wonderful! And proud.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

Re: 1:32 AM, my Muslim friends wear flip-flops all the time (here in Florida).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

I highly commend your work Sart.

Blogger DJ said ... (2:29 PM) :

I love this photo.

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (5:28 PM) :

Beautiful photo, Sart. Those are very attractive girls. But this is a very common look in Muslim countries.

Hey, I like 'diversity' just as much as the next chap, but in the interests of preserving the famous style, freedom, and beauty of Nordic women, I hope to God this look does not catch on in Europe!

More Swedish beauties, please.

Blogger Gudl said ... (6:37 PM) :

I have never seen anything like that! Very cool.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:52 PM) :

A brilliant photo...

Blogger Anastasia said ... (8:47 PM) :

love this shot Sart!!
are they twins or just besties wearing the same clothes....love that!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 PM) :

I read a lot - both on the internet and print - and I am never moved to respond except on your site. This shot is so electrifying. Thank you. Love the girls.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:05 AM) :

Love that they're being fashion forward but still holding on to their religious beliefs. Gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:26 AM) :

I have seen drop dead gorgeous muslim girls in Copehangen and you wouldnt believe how fashionable and stylish they were. They wore amazing colors, beautiful prints and creative shapes, would mix fabrics and prints, and had the most amazing shoes and purses. I fell in love with their atitude, boldness and braveness- and their sense of style and color.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:23 AM) :

Very cool, and not a look I've seen here in southern England! I love to see the many variations on a theme that Muslim gals come up with.

They look quite space-age.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

Love the unexpected little heel on the flip flop.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:51 PM) :

It is so nice to see being "faithful" assosicated with such a lovely photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:48 PM) :

Reminds me of a group of Arab girls I saw on Oxford Street just yesterday. "Summer" in London has brought hordes of Arab visitors and while a lot of the women are fully veiled my little group of 17 year-olds were very chic in jeans and flowing blouses with Balenciaga bags and Jimmy Choos, sophisticated make-up. Their hijabs were just a very natural extension of their ensembles.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:37 AM) :

Wonderful! Not many people (outside of the Muslim world) are able to capture the spirit of young Muslims living in the West. Having our roots still tied to our religion and culture but still working with Western culture and design. I love it!

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (6:11 PM) :

Totally awesome!! Glad to see some diversity here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:16 PM) :

LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that you included us!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:19 PM) :

Thank you Sart for noticing the cute girls and being fascinated enough to include them in your amazing collection!
As a Muslim girl, I really feel honored to be finally acknowledged for what we really are and not some false generalizations.

:)

Blogger lala said ... (4:02 AM) :

when i first saw the picture i was taken by the fact 1. they wore hijabs which is great to see that, being included in a stylsih site. 2. i keep thinking of 2 tropical birds somehow pirched on a tree looking at you with the quizzical look those girls have .. some how cant get the idea of birds out of my head everytime i look at them..
love to you sart,
L

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:52 AM) :

Visit London in summer when lot´s of Arabs vacation there and you will get great pictures of stylish muslim women . I personally find that the ones dressed in "long black" are far more elegant than we are. There is a dignity to that way of dressing that we definitely lack. "Long black" (I don´t know the correct name of the dress) combined with for example platform Loboutins = Unbeatable !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:53 AM) :

look at those stylish Muslimas! :0) As as a modern Medhmrlyeuslima, I hank you for showing this picture.

I am getting a very Jane Austen vibe with the empire ribbon waist. I love their style! Very unique and fresh

Blogger Mary Nguyen said ... (12:46 AM) :

gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:12 AM) :

fabuuuullous! Thanks to the girls for 'daring' and thanks to you for sharing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:54 AM) :

About the flags in the background: NO they are NOT from some kind of sports event or anything like that. Its a gas station called OK/Q8 and the flags are red and blue, not pink.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:15 AM) :

I don't really understand why they are soo super special.?

Blogger B said ... (4:46 PM) :

Oh how I love this photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:46 PM) :

A wonderful photo, and how inspiring to read the many comments--from Muslims and non-Muslims alike--celebrating the creativity and beauty not just of these girls, but different cultures coexisting in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.

How sad it makes me, therefore, that in many if not most Islamic countries these girls could by law be punished for wearing clothes that so clearly show the shapes of their bodies.

Alas.

Bre

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 AM) :

Good question : What is so special about these girls ?
Probably the fact that the picture is being seen mostly by westerners !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 AM) :

Oh my I love this look. They've added some modern flare in it, yum yum yum.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:02 AM) :

10points for the shot! Thank you for highlighting that yes indeed fashion is for everyone:)

I love the white pants and the hijab framing their faces. Beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:20 AM) :

So, I've read some of ur comments. Not all of 'em, so I might bring old news here. But the flags in the background look a lot like the logo of a chain of gas stations, ie where u get gas for ur car... Called OK Q8, so simply serendepity there.

Sorry to burst the bubble...

/anna, tall, blue eyes and blonde...

Blogger WendyB said ... (5:02 PM) :

Oh, they're so cute together.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:31 AM) :

As a Muslim girl, I have to give you the props for including these beautiful ladies' style. I love your blog and showing how one can combine her faith with her western culture is just awesome.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:59 PM) :

Love it! Them skinnies look great.

I too wear a hijaab and i love to rock my balenciaga's with my modern clothing.

Good work sart!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:46 AM) :

they look too daring for muslim girls.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:21 AM) :

Here in the south of France, I've seen a lot of veiled girls in stylish and creative get-ups... wish you were here to photograph them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:06 PM) :

This is inspiring beyond belief. I'm not going to be PC because it would be lying to say that the usual black hijab is in fact NOT drab. But these girls; these clearly individual members of a unified and often uniformed religion/culture, disperse my previous limited view when in the shops and on seeing Muslim women of "why they even bother to go shopping in those stores, and if they buy anything who is going to see it." COMPLETLY DEIFIC!

Blogger MMahmood said ... (2:37 AM) :

I like it. I see a lot of different styles of it from around the world- all you need to do is step inside a Mosque on a busy Friday here in the States.:)

Even after having seen a ton of different looks from around the world, I like this shot because I haven't seen someone pull off so much white! I like it- my only complaint being the skinny jeans.
From a religious perspective, the way I see it, if you're going to wear the scarf, you have to consistently make sure that the modesty fits the full figure and just not parts.

Still, I like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:58 PM) :

oh my!
this is lovely.

Blogger Yassmina said ... (9:34 AM) :

As a Muslim Hijabi, just like to re-iterate the thanks :D I never expected, while browsing through archives, to see any covered girls, and this makes me love your blog all the more :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:28 AM) :

I have lots of friends that use the head wrap very fashionably, I'm glad to see it on here! : )
