On the Street.....Shirt as Skirt, Stockholm
This young lady is wearing her fathers shirt as a skirt. She was very proud that she was able to do this with no additional stitches just folding and tucks.
This is why I come to Stockholm.
ps I usually like to shoot people in empty-ish spaces but the was really happy with her calm, stillness in the center of a bustling crowd.

this is really great - I'm very impressed with this young lady! as a Swedish person having lived abroad for a long time and perhaps with a somewhat nostalgic and uniform outlook on what's Swedish I'm very happy that you reminded me of the uniqueness that actually does exist too

Love the colors, esp the reddish shirt with her reddish hair. And the semi-opaque black hose are brilliant-- on an older or less aggressively dressed woman they'd read as dowdy or just plain awful.
Would love to see a side/rear view of the skirt as well as a better view of the shoes.

This is great. I am currently working on a collection of accessories, using old mens clothing. I live in rural south east VA, so I really need these types of visuals. It keeps me sane to know there is still some real style out there.

i live in Washington DC and spent the past six months in Paris experimenting with fashion....now I'm back and i often wish i could wear things like this on the street but DC is a very conservative city and people would gawk... *sigh*

Well done, the folds and the slate grey colour just make a striking garment. The pop of red is lovely.

OK, not too hard to figure this out.
The collar is at her waist -- you can see the two collar points at each side.
The back shoulder yoke is in front, working just like a yoke on a skirt. You can see the center back double pleat of the shirt going down the center front of the "skirt" to where it is gathered at the lower edge.
She must have turned the sleeves inside out, which would form pockets, then folded them up around the lower edge of the skirt to gather it.
Look closely behind her legs and you can see the bottom of the center front button bands. Clearly she just buttoned it at whatever button left enough room for her waist and upper hip -- probably second or third button down from the collar band.
Really cute and clever, but I have to say I don't like the black stockings with such an otherwise summery outfit, nor am I keen on the color combinations -- the red seems too bright for the color of the shirt.
But she's cute enough to pull it off and it is a great shot, with her stillness against the busy square behind her.
For those questioning the size of her waist-- note that the tips of the collar are sticking out on her sides. This is because the shirt isn't buttoned all the way up to the neck. (Even when fashion is longer spread collars no collar is going to be long enough to span half a woman's body.) Her waist is likely a few inches less than twice the neck measurement; I'd guess somewhere between 26-28" (66-71 cm) or so which is thin (but that's clear from the photo) but hardly tiny or skeletal.
I think Little Edie (of grey gardens) would approve!

To the people who were wondering how this was done: the shirt is right-side up. It looks like she pulled just the sleeves inside-out, rolled the bottom of the shirt, and brought the sleeves back around outside to tuck them into the armholes again.
She would have had to undo at least one or two buttons in the back, right? She's thin, but I doubt her waist is tiny enough. Do you have a photo of the back?
As an afterthought, I wonder what it would have looked like if she'd tied a necktie or something similar round the part that used to be the collar...

Nope, it's not upside-down...that's the collar at her waist, you can spot the wing-tips of it..and the shoulder yoke, with the back pleat, is arranged as the front of the skirt, right-side-up. You can see that the open collar spans just the *front* of her waist--ergo, she has most likely fastened it around back by just opening a few more neck buttons, then buttoning it "to fit" the rest of the way down--you can get a glimpse of the buttons in back under her "hem". So, while she is slender, she doesn't need to have a 15 1/2 inch waist to pull off this cute look! LOL! Now, if I could just figure out how she did those sleeves....adorable!

I agree with a few other commenters-- very Little Edie Beale. She needs a sweater as turban to complete this look.
This is the kind of thing that would normally get on my nerves... but I'm intrigued! I would not have guessed from the picture that this was anything but a highly constructed skirt.
Good shot, quite unusual (because normally the background is blurred etc.). Kudos to that girl for originality, the most important thing ever when it comes to fashion. But the clothes she is wearing do not compliment her appearance in the slightest. I don't think she is pretty at all and the whole ensemble is rather unpleasant in my opinion. We MUST see more of this though, because people are getting used to boring ordinary clothes and are becoming too scared to experiment :)
Although I'm not a fan of complicated fashion, I have to admit she did it the right way -- pairing that skirt with a little simple top and a pair of gorgeous heels.
What innovation! Of course, not all of us could carry it off so beautifully...

i have to say i find this one of the most successful photographs on the site - successful in that it really conveys to vibrant nature of street fashion. Most of the others look more like outtakes from catalog shoots.
