On the Street.....Shirt as Skirt, Stockholm
This young lady is wearing her fathers shirt as a skirt.
She was very proud that she was able to do this with no additional stitches just folding and tucks.
This is why I come to Stockholm.
ps I usually like to shoot people in empty-ish spaces but the was really happy with her calm, stillness in the center of a bustling crowd.

stunning photo - love the motion of the foot traffic around her. i'm guessing this outfit will be controversial, but girls like this are the reason that street fashion is so fascinating. absolutely love it.
This is the very reason I come to your website Sart, to see innovation such as this.
I would have loved to see the back of her 'skirt'. It would have looked great with the buttons of the shirt going down the back.
Reminds me of my days as an 8-year-old wearing bedsheets as a skirt and then bustling it with paperclips...
Her innovation is charming.
Fantastic idea! I'll be heading to Target immediately to buy some men's oxford shirts!
i love her choice of color. It goes well with her.
She's great!
I suppose we shall never know how she solved it all at the back. Her Dad's neck measurement MUST be smaller than her waist. (Yes, I see his collar tips folding over at the sides.)
Her LEGS!! Dios mio...
Also interesting to see a crowd shot. There have been lots of comments about the Swedish gene pool etc, that they ALL are so beautiful and cool and model-like....
PS LYB (Love Your Blog)
not really new, but always cute to see some imagination... Susie Bubble from style bubble did it already and I think we've seen it in magazines...
this girl fits it pretty well...
But i would love to know how it is in the back... I mean the collar of the shirt cannot be this big to make the turn of her waist...
I like the fact she's wearing it high waisted and the pockets are pretty genius...
the sartorialist is back! love it...
Wow! Love it!
I reall can't get over this picture. that girl is beautiful. the setting is amazing. and i have no words for the skirt.
astounding. compared with the unremarkables to her left & right she looks beamed in from another world.
any photo of how she arranged the shirt from behind?
seriously the coolest and most creative thing i've ever seen. i want to learn how to do that too! nownownow!
wasn't this a NYLON d.i.y? regardless, i love it - and her. her color choices are fantastic - like rusty pipes and aged brass.
That is genious! I want to try that =]
Innovative fun
&
How thin is her waist ?
Seriously you are becoming more adept each day at spotting the different...
This is a seriously beautiful woman
Her hair is devine
Her choice of colours
Dramatic
A great shot in a bustling

Yeah; I'd be proud, too. No pics of what the back of the "shkirt" (which would seem to be front of the shirt) looked like?
That must have taken hours - if not days - of trial and error.
Kudos!
mltt
this is really great - I'm very impressed with this young lady! as a Swedish person having lived abroad for a long time and perhaps with a somewhat nostalgic and uniform outlook on what's Swedish I'm very happy that you reminded me of the uniqueness that actually does exist too
very rad, wish we could see a behind view. the people in stockholm seem to be as fashionably unique as in a city such as tokyo.
The shirt works. The hair is stunning. But I really want the shoes.
just read everyone's comments: and her waist is tiny, but she's wearing the shirt upside-down with neck and armholes rolled and tucked (so not being restricted by the original shape) no...? ...and yes it's been done before in several spreads, but to me that doesn't mean the way she's done it isn't great and original
Love the colors, esp the reddish shirt with her reddish hair. And the semi-opaque black hose are brilliant-- on an older or less aggressively dressed woman they'd read as dowdy or just plain awful.
Would love to see a side/rear view of the skirt as well as a better view of the shoes.
that's a remarkable photo. the outfit is fine, unusual which is good, but the shot...nice shot.
Beautiful innovation! Great shot with the crowd bustling by.
Fantastic! She looks brilliant! Great shot too!
The girl is pretty-but what on earth is she wearing? It seems that you can take something from closets of just about anyone and expect approval from anyone.I really think she hit the bottom line.
that's brilliant...sort of reminiscent of susie bubble's cardigan qua skirt thing. I'm going to add my voice to the chorus of people asking for a shot of the "back." did you get one?
Fantastic! But she either must have a very small waist or her father must have a very large neck for this to work.
Love her shoes too!
This is great. I am currently working on a collection of accessories, using old mens clothing. I live in rural south east VA, so I really need these types of visuals. It keeps me sane to know there is still some real style out there.
Thanks for the inspiration.

i LOVE this outfit and just like everyone else, i wish there was a shot from behind...
i live in Washington DC and spent the past six months in Paris experimenting with fashion....now I'm back and i often wish i could wear things like this on the street but DC is a very conservative city and people would gawk... *sigh*
I miss europe.
any
The revolutionary costume for today!
oh thats brilliant! please say you have a picture of the back!
I'm DYING to see a back shot of the skirt
this IS great.
I'd love to see what her skirt looks like from the back! The frontal view is amazing, but I'd love to know how she made it work -very creative to say the least!
Great photo!
Is her name possibly Ylva Fred
Wow.. bravo!
Not to mention, a beautiful young woman. She could be a model.
show us the back please! you can't take a picture like that and leave us hanging...
i have been looking at this picture for the past several minutes and cannot for the life of me figure out how she did that! the only part i can figure out is that the collar of the shirt is the waist band. anyone have any idea how to duplicate this?
absolutely love how still she is amongst the crowd.
great color scheme- and marvelously original
that's really fantastic! I suppose she couldn't've demonstrated how she did it in the middle of the street like that, but I wouldn't mind step-by-step instructions... inventive and it still looks chic!
I love that. That's too orginal!
Well done, the folds and the slate grey colour just make a striking garment. The pop of red is lovely.
I actually love the look on her, though a 3D view would have been the best way to judge the outfit. Did she knot the sleeves on the side? Humm...that bugs me a little. She is gorgeous though!!
so fasyon fasyons
I like so very much the will to be individual, the creativity, the elegance, the thoughtlessness..............it´s wonderful!
Tine
simply wonderful!
Tine
That's a really impressive design-- I wish I knew how she did it/how the back looks. Does her dad have a really big nekc or does she have a uber tiny waist?
I've been looking at this image all day long. The idea is.. just amazing. I'm continuously being inspired by your images. Thank you!
A fantastic capturing of a very unique style !
I too will visit Stockholm next week and I seriously have no idea what to pack for a week! Dresses? But then again, will I freeze?
so creative & daring! props to her!!!
LOVE IT! The only thing that's wrong is her makeup
Definitly, she has the style.
People, I'm confused here. All of the comments posted about this "shirt/skirt" are praising the woman for her imagination, and I totally agree with you. But the girl who wore a white flowing summer dress to a polo match got crucified by you. What's up with that?
okay..........revealed
take this bit here and hold it up-take this piece and wrap it around -button this and this and this, twist here, make sure this bit drapes over, yes like that......
align the front placket and there you have it!
Brilliant !
i think the top two or three buttons of the shirt were undone to give room for her waist - it created a nice V-shape in the back
i wonder how she did the pockets...i've been trying but i can't figure it out.
Fun! I had a friend in high school who used to wear this. I love the sense of play.
I think we would have all loved to see the back.
Brilliant.
An interesting look but, I'm surprised a lot of the commenters here haven't seen anyone do this before.
fantastic combination of colors...adorable skirt...GREAT LOOK, GREAT PIC!
OK, not too hard to figure this out.
The collar is at her waist -- you can see the two collar points at each side.
The back shoulder yoke is in front, working just like a yoke on a skirt. You can see the center back double pleat of the shirt going down the center front of the "skirt" to where it is gathered at the lower edge.
She must have turned the sleeves inside out, which would form pockets, then folded them up around the lower edge of the skirt to gather it.
Look closely behind her legs and you can see the bottom of the center front button bands. Clearly she just buttoned it at whatever button left enough room for her waist and upper hip -- probably second or third button down from the collar band.
Really cute and clever, but I have to say I don't like the black stockings with such an otherwise summery outfit, nor am I keen on the color combinations -- the red seems too bright for the color of the shirt.
But she's cute enough to pull it off and it is a great shot, with her stillness against the busy square behind her.
For those questioning the size of her waist-- note that the tips of the collar are sticking out on her sides. This is because the shirt isn't buttoned all the way up to the neck. (Even when fashion is longer spread collars no collar is going to be long enough to span half a woman's body.) Her waist is likely a few inches less than twice the neck measurement; I'd guess somewhere between 26-28" (66-71 cm) or so which is thin (but that's clear from the photo) but hardly tiny or skeletal.
I think Little Edie (of grey gardens) would approve!
A bit of Grey Gardens in Stockholm. She looks like a Swedish Tori Amos. Wonderful how still she is with such movement behind her. Great photog, Sart!
That.. is amazing.. ;)
Oooh, very cool skirt. I love the way the back of the shirt looks on her, and the shape is so nicely done. Her hair colour and shoes compliment the outfit well, too.
I tried this before in my boredom as a child, but it obviously never looked this good! :)
To the people who were wondering how this was done: the shirt is right-side up. It looks like she pulled just the sleeves inside-out, rolled the bottom of the shirt, and brought the sleeves back around outside to tuck them into the armholes again.
She would have had to undo at least one or two buttons in the back, right? She's thin, but I doubt her waist is tiny enough. Do you have a photo of the back?
As an afterthought, I wonder what it would have looked like if she'd tied a necktie or something similar round the part that used to be the collar...
So thaaat's why my shirt collars are always stretched out! Stay outta my closet!
Beautiful girl, beautiful shkirt and a beautiful photo. The picture really pops, compared to the crowdless ones.
I love this color combination.
wow, very creative yet effortlessly stylish [or so it seems]. she has the body and the attitude to pull it off.
I like this picture. The people in the back scene surely have no idea, only those in the know know why you picked this girl.
Nope, it's not upside-down...that's the collar at her waist, you can spot the wing-tips of it..and the shoulder yoke, with the back pleat, is arranged as the front of the skirt, right-side-up. You can see that the open collar spans just the *front* of her waist--ergo, she has most likely fastened it around back by just opening a few more neck buttons, then buttoning it "to fit" the rest of the way down--you can get a glimpse of the buttons in back under her "hem". So, while she is slender, she doesn't need to have a 15 1/2 inch waist to pull off this cute look! LOL! Now, if I could just figure out how she did those sleeves....adorable!
I love how nonchalant she looks. Like she does this kind of stuff every single day but doesn't have to brag about it.
good find sart!
i hope she inspires fashion in others...
Interesting....
what people come up with!Cool!
Ylva is all grown up and beautiful!
I'm so proud <3
I agree with a few other commenters-- very Little Edie Beale. She needs a sweater as turban to complete this look.
This is the kind of thing that would normally get on my nerves... but I'm intrigued! I would not have guessed from the picture that this was anything but a highly constructed skirt.
Good shot, quite unusual (because normally the background is blurred etc.). Kudos to that girl for originality, the most important thing ever when it comes to fashion. But the clothes she is wearing do not compliment her appearance in the slightest. I don't think she is pretty at all and the whole ensemble is rather unpleasant in my opinion. We MUST see more of this though, because people are getting used to boring ordinary clothes and are becoming too scared to experiment :)
Although I'm not a fan of complicated fashion, I have to admit she did it the right way -- pairing that skirt with a little simple top and a pair of gorgeous heels.
What innovation! Of course, not all of us could carry it off so beautifully...
woww!!!
how cutee
she looks gorgeous.
the colour suits her beautifully
now..i wonder i could do that..
:)
She looks great - especially in comparison to the lady in the 1986 fluorescent clothes with a scrunchie in her hair, and ankle socks on with her sandals. Awesome.
i have to say i find this one of the most successful photographs on the site - successful in that it really conveys to vibrant nature of street fashion. Most of the others look more like outtakes from catalog shoots.
I love the lady in yellow shorts in the background. Makes me feel better about not being one of the icons of perfection that inhabit Stefano's world.
fantastic. this is why i love reading your blog - she is just fabulous. just like the sweeper with the newspaper hat...creative is as creative does.
This is great! Only one thing comes to mind...
I MUST LEARN HOW...
i have this post starred in my google reader so i could come back to it and give it a shot. tried it with one of my boyfriend's shirts and even with lots of playing around, i couldn't get it to look as good as she does. color me jealous :-)
What a gorgeous, creative girl. I too, wish I could see the back!
