On The Street.......Old-School Braces, New York

Sometimes you see a guy and think that he must be pretty conservative and yet ,literally, just under the surface he has just enough humor to keep you guessing.

Apparently these are very old-school braces but they are soooo old-school that they look completely modern again.

Here is a link to the website of the company that makes them.
Albert Thurston Braces

A sight for sore eyes: lovely, beautifully fitted suit, great palette down to and including the wonderful suspenders.

(I once called them that in London, where "suspenders" are garters. I'd told a guy that I really liked his suspenders.....There was a look of quickly concealed but amused "shock," followed by a super-polite, completely dismissive "thank you.")

Wow, that is wacky, but cool.

Blogger cranberry said ... (3:56 PM) :

I love the shock of blue against the conservative navy.

Cool.

Blogger Easy and Elegant Life said ... (4:55 PM) :

That is one very conservatively well-dressed gentleman. More power to him.

Great shot and eye for detail (as always.) Thanks!

A single breasted peak lapel suit makes him not conservative even on the surface.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:11 PM) :

No pocket square? By the way butch, they are called "braces" not garters.

Blogger ethandesu said ... (7:23 PM) :

Albert Thurston makes the best suspenders anywhere.. If you are in Sydney, Australia, you can get them from the Herringbone store in Circular Quay..

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (7:58 PM) :

Love the fit of the suit and the color is amazingly gorgeous on gentleman.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 PM) :

ooh, cutie-pie! i want me a man like that.... braces and all.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (8:32 PM) :

Wow, those braces are extremely expensive.

Blogger Gudl said ... (8:42 PM) :

That is funny! Definitely reminds me of my grandpa.

Sart,

You missed the key part. This fellow is wearing a two button peak label jacket. Peak lapels on suits are back an look great.

His tailoring is great. Check out the perfect fit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:35 PM) :

perfectly charming braces on a handsome man!

Blogger Anthony said ... (11:13 PM) :

I thought these disappeared from stores... great to see theyre still around!
He looks great!

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (11:14 PM) :

Beautiful photo! This gentleman is well put together. Personally, I wouldn't wear a SB suit with peak lapels, but to each his own I guess. Wonderful colours here, Sart!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:52 AM) :

Beautiful tailoring, fabric and color. Sleeve length and shoulder perfect are perfect. Waist is nipped nicely. Those details + suspenders go a long way; makes him look fit and natty. This is a guy who cares about the way he looks -- and it shows.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:06 AM) :

ah, the British stockbroker!

Sart, I went to the brace's site. Very cool, of course, but there was also a deliciously corny line at the end of their FAQ page that made me laugh --

"We are supplying braces for various members of the cast of 'Sweeney Todd' which is currently being filmed - the competition was cut throat..."

... gotta love the Brit.

What a surprise to see what was under the jacket. Not bad though and might be worthwhile for also the belly guys.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:38 AM) :

The subconscious always told me to look longer than I wanted to.
Now you revealed the attraction. Merci.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:14 AM) :

I got some braces for my boyfriend a while ago. They were quite popular but the conclusion was they only look good when he wears them with a fitted shirt. Otherwise they make his stomach look quite big - it has the effect of "framing" the belly and so drawing even more attention to it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:11 AM) :

i know him! he works for duncan quinn.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

It's a beautifully cut suit but I agree that the peak lapels on a SB and the hacking pockets on a city suit are scandalous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 PM) :

what an impeccable fit... do you know who makes it?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:45 PM) :

indeed the suit fits like a glove...looks as if this duncan quinn lad has it under control...as for "garters", "suspenders" and "braces" lets be clear...in London you wear suspenders to hold up your socks or if you're a lady, your stockings,...you wear braces to hold up your pants, or as they'd say there, trousers (you wear pants UNDER your trousers if you're a Brit...)...a garter has pretty much the same meaning on both sides of the pond...think lady, think mid thigh, and I'll leave it at that...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:33 PM) :

What a pleasure to see clothing that actually FITS.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:01 AM) :

Anonymous, he does have a pocket square. Look at the enlarged version of the picture.

The peak lapels and hacking pockets (and ticket pocket!) seem a bit incongruous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:51 AM) :

great shot Sart

braces are fantastic ,

and his shirt is cut the perfect length in relation to his jacket

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:05 PM) :

Love the braces, would love a pair of sock garters in that colour.

i know him too! he's my big bro! i'm so proud of him :)

What fun!

And let's see more men in hats! We are in Australia.

PS Just to digress with that other anon: In Australia men wear boxers, or undies/underwear sometimes, but very rarely pants if one is referring to underclothes. Or if you want to be horrid, you could call them jocks (there are probably other vulgar appellations which I can't think of at the moment). Pants are trousers, interchangeable labels.

Women, btw, wear mainly undies (or knickers, in some states), g-strings or thongs if you have to be specific. But what is with the term 'panties' I read in US mags?! Ugh, does anyone actually ever use that namby-pamby euphamism really?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 AM) :

Who is this guys tailor? And where is his shirt from?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 PM) :

Let me just say that these braces are the best, as I've tried a couple of other brands. These are the most comfortable, best looking ones of them all. I've got a red and green pair, and they look great with everything I could possibly wear, especially the red ones.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:56 PM) :

love the color and the structure of his suit as well, it fits his blue eyes perfectly

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:38 AM) :

Great to see braces still in fashion. I only wear plain ones which can initiate some ribald comments, but the chicks love to twang them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:36 AM) :

I have never thought of braces as a fashion item. I wear them to keep my pants in place. I was always taught that they should not be visible in public, but when it is hot or I am changing at the gym, this is not possible. Is it now considered acceptable to let them be seen?

PS I am not an old fogey but a fit young guy (23)

Anonymous james said ... (11:47 AM) :

Can't see any problem showing your braces in public. They come in all colours and patterns, so are obviously expected to be seen.If you receive any adverse comments from guys, this merely shows they do not undestand how comfortable they are. i generally find that the girls think they are great - my current GF encourages me to wear mine all the time!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:04 PM) :

Braces are fantastic, comfortable to wear and good to be seen. Why don't more guys wear them?

Anonymous Sherlock said ... (11:00 AM) :

Those braces look fantastic. Why are so many of us guys shy about showing them. They both look great and feel great!
