On The Street........Dressed Shorts, Milano

I think it is hard to make shorts look anything but casual but ,wow, this guy really shows how to dress up them up in a very real world way.
I also think this is a super sophisticated summer color combo - almost pre-dates Prada Summer 2008
This is the kind of shot I will revisit next March/April when I am starting to really shape up my summer wardrobe.

Forget him. What about the woman to his left?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 AM) :

how serendipitous to have that young lady flitting by the milli-second you take the shot.

she looks like a young sophia loren don't you think? love the wedge heels on her shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 AM) :

is she wearing gucci wedge heels with a dark blue lace blouse from valentino?

Blogger spring flowers said ... (9:26 AM) :

very much the young sophia loren...love everything about her! I was distracted by her in my attempts to study the man's outfit. I have to say Sart, it's been a while since I've seen such a beautiful woman out and about. Very captivating. I am loving your Milan pics.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (9:32 AM) :

Oh man, I'm too shallow. I'm too distracted by the wonderful woman beside him and her fabulous shoes to notice his shorts... Sorry!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

HOW FUNNY, I thought Sophia Loren too.

Great, thanks Mr Sart, that's all I need. Short Envy
the shorts are unreal.
I'm going to alter and dye mine today.
He has a good set of pins.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:38 AM) :

His combination is perfect! I have to say I have no been that impressed by your summer shots as of late, but this is totally worth waiting for!

Exceptional!!

Blogger Misterparticular said ... (9:44 AM) :

She really does look great, what a perfect shot. (Is she wearing shorts too?) The really scary thing is that everyone looks well dressed....that never happens in New York!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

both of them got great legs....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

ah ah i also spent more time looking at the girl. :)

Blogger Christianthomas said ... (10:09 AM) :

I never really like shorts on men.

Nice jacket though

Blogger mikeianlee said ... (10:09 AM) :

I'd have to agree that the lady on the left may have stolen the show! Great shot. As for the shorts, I think the length is great and makes him look taller and well proportioned. (if you notice he's shorter than the lady). At first I wasn't to sure about the toque but I think it pulls his whole look together.

Blogger will anderson said ... (10:10 AM) :

as i hit the comments key, i knew i was going to have to comment on the red-head to the left, rather than the dapper gent (not the one with the pocket square and running shoes...the one in shorts). i laughed when i saw the first 4 posts already took note of this lady. so here's my comment.

sart, when i revisit this pic in march and april, it wont be to note this guys ensamble, it'll be to savor the legs on that amazing red-head walking by. good god.

Blogger angvou said ... (10:13 AM) :

eeek. He's so top heavy! There's something oddly disturbing about those...naked...legs. If you squint, he looks like he's wearing white anklets. I am not convinced anyone should be following this lead next March/April... But you are the expert.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:18 AM) :

He looks good but you know she looks bettah!

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:21 AM) :

i agree on the young sophia loren. how uncanny!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

exactly. whatever, on the gent of non specific ethnicity. She is stunning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:26 AM) :

They both have killer legs!

Blogger jkh said ... (10:38 AM) :

wow.

who is that daring darling to his right?
(perfect shoes - and feet - too!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

I have a feeling everyone else to view this is going to also be very much distracted by the amazing woman to his left, I know I am.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

That woman perfectly splits the difference between Antonioni's and Tinto Brass's sensibilities.

The guy looks good, too, though it would be an intimidating look to try to pull off...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

She's very striking. I can't take my eyes off her.
Did someone mention something about shorts?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:58 AM) :

To answer the first few comments: no, the guy is more interesting to me than the woman. We've seen plenty of her type on this blog. I agree with you, Sart. Waht he has on looks very wearable, and it's nicely proportioned and a great combo of colors. The hat is also a nice bit of a quirky touch.

Blogger whyioughtta said ... (11:00 AM) :

LOL...funny how everyone's focusing on Leggy McGorgeous. She's the first thing I noticed too. Wow.

I have a hard time accepting a toque (the wintery hat), especially with shorts, but other than that, I think his look is really funky.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 AM) :

I have to agree; I was trying very hard to keep my eye focused on the gentleman, but the young lady is very distracting, and in a good way. Those legs! That hair!

Blogger Butch said ... (11:31 AM) :

First reaction: what?!

Deep breath.

Then: well, the proportions squeeze by; and if a woman can show that much leg while wearing a suit, why can't a guy?

On the other (third?) hand: Bermudas just seem to work better on men paired with a jacket; again, a matter of proportion, since, in cases like this, you get a lot of top, for very little bottom.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

wow She is woderful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

I am starting to think sport coats with shorts(particlarly short ones) do not go together, except in Burmuda.

Check out the shorty short comments a bunch of photo's down...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 AM) :

Sorry I cant pay any attention to the shorts with that gorgeous woman is in the shot. Love her outfit, very sexy but totally professional.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:04 PM) :

The wooly cap with shorts combo is a little perplexing. I guess even the jacket is perplexing. But he looks surprisingly nice.

I have to agree that the lady is smashing.

Blogger Tereneh Idia said ... (12:09 PM) :

Si, si. I love the outfit, the hat and the colors. I wish his shorts were just a tad longer though, I cannot believe I am suggesting a man should show less leg not more. Overall this is one of my favorite shots it tells the story beyond one person's outfit: The sexy woman (in glasses!) to the left. And I love the man on the right, mid stride, mid sentence, nice. Possible cover for the Sarto book? I am just saying I really want you to do a book.

Blogger LJ said ... (12:10 PM) :

I love the woman's outfit. Love her shoes and her hair is beautiful too!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

Yes, the woman ...

BUT, you told him to button his jacket, admit it! ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

Yeah, I noticed the women to his left too. Very sophisticated. And I love those glasses.

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (12:18 PM) :

Hi Sart, another great shot, I really like this! The shorts with blazer look is pretty unconventional, but I think it works here. I have seen preppy Southern guys wearing shorts with a blazer. Historically English schoolboys and university students sometimes wore a college blazer with shorts, especially at sporting events such as rowing regattas (e.g., Henley). I always though it was funny that some people don't like men wearing a blazer with shorts and showing leg, since women do it all the time. Speaking of which, who is the gorgeous filly on the left of the photo?! Wow!! Holy smokes!! (Reminder to self: plan a trip to Milan ASAP)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:35 PM) :

the lady in the background is gorg what luck to capture her in a that moment and the purple shors are awesome too

Blogger sophistagoth said ... (12:38 PM) :

Yes indeed, the real focus should have been on that rather fetching woman to the left of "Mr. Dressed shorts, Milano." She looks amazing! Style and grace! Forget about him is correct, I detest shorts outside of sports and sleep attire. He looks as if he forgot to slip into some slacks that morning, and come to think of it socks as well! Socks were created for a reason, and they should be worn! Egad, wearing ones shoes without socks is rather garish!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:40 PM) :

back to the shorts folks... this outfit looks GOOD. kudos to this guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 PM) :

She's the new Gradiva.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:49 PM) :

i so agree!!! and wow, her legs are gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 PM) :

That girl! You´ve gotta take another pic of her!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:29 PM) :

how do you focus on him when the shoes are walking out of the shot, and the hair is brilliant?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

how can you focus on him when those shoes are walking out of the picture?

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (1:59 PM) :

I love the combination of colors there. The knit cap is cool, and oh, the legs!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:00 PM) :

I think the fellow in your pic is great, but I am completely mesmerized by the lady on the left. Gorgeous!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:23 PM) :

oh come on you commenters, those shorts are to die for. the colors in the ensemble are so hip.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:28 PM) :

yeah that woman is hot
and makes his outfit look immature
BUT, i think on his own, he looks great
i love the combination...good contrast of styles and attitudes. actually, she is much more obvious...looks like she went in a store and bought the mannequin.
the guy has natural style...he's got IT

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:29 PM) :

i agree with you posters... that woman on the left... wow

Blogger caramimi said ... (2:36 PM) :

i have to warm up to his look, but think his color mixing is on point. i'm with the rest of the comments though, what about that woman (in shorts too, no doubt)?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:40 PM) :

It's a study in contrast:

Public legs vs. Private legs, or

How short works vs. how short does not work.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

Absolutely. I've been carrying this silhouette myself for the last three months, it's a great detour of casual.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 PM) :

I was wondering if people would comment about her... LOVE the shoes. And glasses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:16 PM) :

i agree the woman probably looks better than him.. he looks like a she.. it doesn't work at all.. looks like he has a skirt on.. maybe it's just the photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:17 PM) :

iagree, the lady on the left is more sartorialist material

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

That woman on his left is gorgeous!

Blogger Nadine said ... (3:33 PM) :

He looks great . . . but I love the woman! Great glasses!

Blogger ricpic said ... (3:38 PM) :

Great photo. Not only the stunner to his right (our left) but also the sport coated gent behind him making that quintessentially Italian hand gesture.

As to his outfit: I don't have much to say but I wish he would ditch the knit wool cap. Bad enough at other times of the year; in summer just looking at the thing makes me itchy.

Blogger Particulars said ... (4:12 PM) :

I want the shoes that woman is wearing!

Blogger OTC said ... (4:55 PM) :

I have to say; I'm not really feeling this one. The shorts are a little too short for my taste and overall I'm not particularly drawn to this look.

From the waist up he looks pretty cool and I love the shoes, have a pair just like them. I agree about the women - great unintended shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 PM) :

Now THAT was a great picture... focus on him but just catch her running by...... she is the show-stopper!

Blogger Butch said ... (5:23 PM) :

There's a woman in the picture? Oh, yeah. To the guy's right...

(Heh.)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:45 PM) :

That woman knows how to make glasses look beautiful.

Not crazy about the length of the man's shorts. He's handsome, but I was not struck by his look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:02 PM) :

he looks great! lovely colours and everything. too bad he has awkward leg-hair and what looks like a rather unfortunate...ankle tan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:24 PM) :

I read the first two posts and they echo what I was going to say:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:30 PM) :

OK I'll say it to, she looks amazing, the guy looks great to his shorts are really short but they are the right proportion for his height, but I think his looks is still casual a alot more refined, but casual not dressed up as you stated. Sart, he does have nice legs, like most guys, but his legs would have looked much better shaved, do you think guys with really hairy legs should shave them before wearing shorts that short?.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:59 PM) :

Oh, get over the woman, you guys! Frankly, there's nothing special about her look. Black dress, wedge heels, give me a break!

This lad, on the other hand -- I agree that the hat is a bit much and not seasonally appropriate but I think he looks fab, a touch unusual, very well-tailored, and I like his shoes. Forget her shoes. His shoes are rocking.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:22 PM) :

Find her immediateley and take her picture. NOW!

Blogger simplyolive said ... (9:43 PM) :

i'm more interested in her than him!! (and i have a feeling you already knew this before posting the photo...)
she's gorgeous--love the frames!!

he looks like he forgot his pants and is in his boxers. regardless, don't like the look...

Blogger simplyolive said ... (9:47 PM) :

...is he holding a beer?

Blogger Carol Diehl said ... (9:56 PM) :

I agree with whoever said he looks top-heavy--it's the hat that throws the whole thing off--like his head is ready for winter while his legs are tooling through the summer. However I'm all for shorts on guys with legs like that!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:15 PM) :

love the navy jacket

Blogger MARIA H said ... (10:36 PM) :

Dude! the woman passing by has a Sophia Loren aura...look at those legs with glasses and tousled hair!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 PM) :

Although half these comments are going wild about this beautiful woman on the left, I have to say this blog is really full of them, leggy beautiful, fit women dressed in black. Fantastic for them. But this guy has does something that really transcends that simple formula. I adore his color palette, it's divine, the golden brown of those loafers give a touch of warmth to the rest of his attire and pulls that purple. i'm a sock girl but this is definitely an outfit that necessiates socklessness. and you have to love a man who isn't afraid to wear shorts like that.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (11:45 PM) :

It's all about the lady on the left in the picture...

Amaaaazing.

But the man with the shorts looks original as well.

Blogger Conchita said ... (12:30 AM) :

i noticed the lady on the left more than the guy! hahaha!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:11 AM) :

Ugh-sockless shoes again and hairy legs and the shorty shorts and the too small jacket and the sort of turban .This all on the man .It´s just too much for me.The girl beside him is ok,but the cöntrast between these two makes this pic. even worse.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:18 AM) :

The woman on left seems Rula Jebreal, tv journalist working in Italy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:47 AM) :

I love his shorts!!

The colors look Incredible together. But I do wish his shoes were a little darker.. The caramel seems to run against the grain of the look a little bit. But a very fresh look indeed! Very inspired!

Also, it's funny how people push for more innovation in menswear but shy away when the changes manifest themselves! A hundred years ago, a woman's bare legs would have seemed vulgar. Are our learning curves beginning to plateau?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:09 AM) :

the woman steals the show.

Blogger positively the same dame said ... (1:20 PM) :

it's just a very cool shot. the man and his shorts, the woman and her glasses, the fellow in the background. Plenty to look at, a little something for everyone.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:05 PM) :

this works for me -- amazingly -- I'm so over the Thom Browne thing, but this guy looks good - and, yes, THE woman is pretty F'ing hot

Blogger _ said ... (2:11 PM) :

i am impressed more by the gentleman's innovation more than the womantotheleft's same tired ensemble that has been seen plenty of times in every major city on earth. she looks great, as most of these people do. he looks fantastic, fresh, and rather more interesting.

also being straight and female i'm not attracted to her legs.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:13 PM) :

The woman is terrific!
The gent - blah! I think this is an example where a buttoned down jacket just does not work! I think the guy would have looked better with the jacket opened up (otherwise, proportions are off).
Ciao!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 PM) :

You were saying something?

Sorry... distracted.

Dress shorts. No.

Young Sophia? Yes.

Blogger Françoise said ... (6:53 PM) :

I like the look of that guy. He is narrow with a nice silhouette, and I think this outfit suits him well. I approve. The woman on the left is stunning. I love her! She seems so assured. The garment is only topping on the cake.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 PM) :

The Japanese are cutting edge fashionistas.
They may come up with ridiculous outfits but for high contemporary style and revolutionary clothing sense, nobody beats them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:29 PM) :

She's a knockout..... as for hit get-up? Shorts too short and tight, jacket too small, the shoes look all wrong and the hat?? was it snowing???

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (9:41 PM) :

I would love the shorts to be a little longer, maybe right at the knee and a little more fitted. That said, this look is a winner.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:12 AM) :

it looks like the woman is jealous you're not taking her picture.

what's with the guy on the right? is he wearing basketball sneakers with his pants and blazer?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 AM) :

Why did he have a beanie on if it was so hot out?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 AM) :

that's what i'm talking about. that woman is so chic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:02 AM) :

the composition of your photos has improved so much in the past two years. they were nice to begin, but this one is a fine example of how much the pictures have changed. looking at september 2005 the shots are so tight; you've given your subjects room to breathe and in doing so you give us gifts like this fiiiine redhead.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 AM) :

love how all the colors float together

Blogger Gilbert said ... (12:58 PM) :

Major gaffe, Sart. This picture should have been about the beauty on the left, not the unremarkable man on the right. Look at the lace on her top and how perfectly her glasses frame her face; now that is sartorial perfection.

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (9:40 AM) :

The young lady looks so much more interesting than the main model. He should have chosen a different kind of short with the jacket - looks a bit awkward to me and also a bit forced.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 AM) :

I love the shorts, but the length only seems to go well on Asian men and soccer players who all seem to have great calves (sorry about the stereotype). Otherwise, men look better in longer shorts that don't show the huge difference in size between upper and lower legs.

Unfortunately, it is hard for guys to look good in shorts - maybe even harder than it is for women to find a great bathing suit or bra. :)

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:05 PM) :

The woman is blah. Love the gent's shades of eggplant and wonderfully complementary shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:35 AM) :

the woman on the left is so... wow!

great look, and beautiful legs and hair!
i love her glasses!

Blogger jkh said ... (5:33 PM) :

forgot to say that his look - shorts of this length combined with a tailored jacket - is exactly my favored style this summer.
shoes just a little bit heavier though -- more the dustbowl kind of thing...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:36 AM) :

She is amazing

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:42 PM) :

both are hot! like his style, simple confident! she is quite something. hope she get's in touch with you and you can shoot her properly!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:20 AM) :

Pushing the limits !
That´s what this young man is doing
dressed like this .
I love that !
Who knows what it will mean for main-stream fashion .
More freedom ?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 PM) :

At least the guy is adventurous and actually thinking about what he's wearing, but as others have said, he looks like he's in an autumn (sorry, fall; betraying my origins) outfit but then decided to substitue his pants for a pair of short shorts in deference to the heat outside.

And for the lord's sake no, guys should not shave their legs! (Unless they're drag queens.)

I had to chuckle to myself because the only thing I noticed about the woman were her great shoes - until I saw everyone else's comments. She is very stylish, though in a more immediately recognisable 'good' way. It's the guy who makes you think.

The fact that she's NOT the main focus, that she's walking out of the frame is what makes this photo more interesting, and journalistic. I bet it would look great in black and white too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:16 PM) :

The guy in the middle looks great. I must be one of the few who didn't notice the woman everyone else is talking about! Back to the guy - HOT. I don't think many men can carry that look off, but he has done so very successfully.
