Comments on "Giovanna - One Dress, Two Ways"
Oh man, I love the layering in the second photo. And who says someone past their 20s can't wear short skirts/dresses? Poppycock.
Am I getting old, or why do I find the dress too short to be worn with bare leggs? I like the second version though, due to the actual weather the seemingly less utopian one.
What great style this woman has!
It has become this dreadful faux pas to be seen in the same thing twice and I just don't know why.
She shows that you don't need huge closets full of clothes, just great accessories and and great eye. Nice catch!
Sigh! I need to know what these people do for a living to be able to afford a Chanel bag in pink - hardly an investment colour, but boy does it work! As for the dress: LOVE IT!
Good shot Sart!
thats a balenciaga dress! totally dig the second look!
i love the concept behind the 2 different stylings of the dress, but i would rather see it done with a grey version. the white and blue patched sleeveless shirtdress is so summer (and perfect in the first pic) that done up with wool and a scarf and jacket, it's like wearing a bathingsuit with boots - too much seasonal contrast (just my opinion - she still looks gorgeous, but credit for that has to be given to her confidence, her legs and her way with a scarf).
ps rina - i can't see what age has to do with it - but for what it's worth, this dress requires bare legs.
I don't care for the second photo too much. All the purple on the bottom is a bit distasteful. However, she DOES have the greatest legs I have ever seen on a woman. Long and lean--> Beautiful.
Also, (to the poster named Rina) I think that because her legs are very long, the dress may seem too short. Giovanna, if I'm remembering correctly, used to be a model so she's most likely taller than 5 ft 9 inches. It's not unusual that dresses that would be longer on other women would only hit her legs at mid-thigh or a few inches above the knee.
For editor
regarding seasonal contrast - I thought these two images were interesting because of the contrast.
It was very very warm in Milan (1st photo) and very cool in Paris (2nd photo) -
When you are traveling and only have a certain amount of clothes how do you pull it together and still look the way you want.
I had a cashmere sweater with me just incase it was cool on the plane or train but never thought i would need to wear it but Paris was a big surprise - last year it was sweltering.
real life throw curves and I thought she handled it very well

Please, how can strappy purple shoes be "distasteful" with this outfit you might not like the choice but they are are far from distasteful - I'll mark it up to poor word choice.
both looks are so much fun! you can tell this lady has a sense of humor through her choice of accessories...
Giovanna looks impeccable on both photos! And you cannot wear anything on your legs in hot Mediterranean weather! Strappy shoes with this are excellent and very elegant on those legs!
Absolutely great!
This Shoes with the skirt and so on...Ok, the skirt is short, but this Woman has the Legs to wear all that without any thinkings.....
so nice!
love the both pair of shoes. does anyone know who they are from ?
The first way seems like "yes, that's a dress."
The second way seems like "she forgot something!"
But she has great legs and great shoes and a great smiel, and Jimmy cracked corn and I don't care.
Ms. Battaglia is fantastic, as always! I love the purple Prada heels in the second photo and the way she's layered the sweater and scarf over the shirtdress. Gorgeous!
i love it...she's my fashion icon...did she still use her curly hair ???
LOVE LOVE LOVE THe purple heels - they are rockin'! I like the dress without the layers. I really like the pink bag too... Lovely shots ... :-)
I agree with Editor. The contrast in color and material doesn't work. (But this is nitpicking. Giovanna looks amazing nevertheless.)
She looks amazing... end of story. What makes her look unique is that she accesorizes extremely well- the scarf is to die for!!
i love the layering in the second picture. the sweater and the jacket so very lovely. And the scarf just so chic! With legs like those it would be a shame to hide them.
personally i like the first one better. the cream leather shoes and the red sunglasses add to the dress. i do think she should have worn her hair down with the first outfit, just to add one more little punch.
Find MORE of these, Wondersart! This is such fun! Two looks with one dress? I should say so! She's amazing, and she looks wonderful both ways, and she knows how to get dressed, and because you've found her and put her up here for all the world to see, we too can get an eye for "one dress, two ways." Thank you so much for this one. (And thanks for putting up the less than complimentary comments -- I'm learning how not to look at things. ;))
i absolutely love the second look! the layering is just exquisite!
and perfect legs, of course
The second photo, I just can't get into it. Looks like she forgot to wear pants.
Fabulous legs, love the shirt/coat/scarf combo.
But the dress just doesn't look like a skirt. It feels unfinished.
It's only a faux pas to be seen wearing the same thing twice in the U.S.
She looks fantastic and self-assured in both photos. Can you show us a close-up of how she's tied the scarf?
LOVE the layering in the second one. And I have a pink Chanel bag - it wipes clean!!
I like her.
Two ways, Two words.
LOVE IIIIT!!!
SOOPAH!
sartorialist - i take absolutely no exception whatsoever with her layering skills, regardless of even her limitations while traveling (my own wardrobe projects, tracked through my various sites, reflect my strong personal value of "less is more").
but i definitely feel that the dress would be just as cute in a solid color, and that would make it more compatible with the second look (a deep red, a rich grey, anything, just so long as it's solid). the pattern that it has does not lend itself to easily transition from one season to another. it is strictly a summer dress for a summer look. the layers, though expertly applied, are layers on top of a summer dress, rather than layers that transform a summer dress into a perennial option.
Very creative style given the different climates- love both photos and think she looks amazing.
Thank goodness some people are paying attention to the weather. bare legs! Yay. I admit to hating leggings on most people, but when it's this hot and humid it's a crime for everyone!
Plus, wearing things more than once... human, green, and stylish. haha
She has nice legs.
But uhm...nice outfits!!
Wow.......nothing more to say about her legs.
But regarding the second picture - I just don´t think that purple and pink together are a good choice. I think it would have been better to choose either one of those and add a special 'kick' to her outfit.
I equally love both looks....and the second look, I love the layers, the casualness...the feeling of thrown together and yet the whole look comes off as polished and sophisticated...I wonder what she bought from Balenciaga.
I love the two looks. The shoes are to die for. What a perfect ending for those perfect legs! And I love the purple with the pink. Well done.
love the 2nd -fall-on-top-spring-on -bottom- look as an alternative, but it might work even better w/ leggings and chic ankle boots...
Gee you've got a tough job, Sart.

SOOOOO JEALOUS.... I wanted that dress the moment I saw it on the runway!!
Oh I love them both. She was travelling and had to adapt
Sart,
By "distasteful" I wasn't referring to the shoes only. I meant that I didn't like the matching of the blazer and sweater with the dress and shoes. I just thought it was visually jarring to have a simply gray sweater with purple shoes and a purplish/blue dress. The shoes, in and of themselves, are very stylish. You're right, perhaps "distasteful" was too severe in connotation.
She is glamor personified. Her look is "whirlwind" - love, love, love it.
She really looks great in the second pic, I do love the layering. The baby blue/grey combo going on and the magenta stilletos, the scarf is stunning... my big problem is the chanel bag. I think the color choice is not right and well, the bag itself is too "fashionista" and destroy the easyness of the outfit. anyways, kudos!
YAY!
Giovana Battaglia is THA best!
Love her shoes on both pictures. Why do you get to photograph all those stylish and pretty girls and boys, Sarto... You are one lucky man!
Keep meeting Giovana and please please please run into Carine Roitfled more often!
Ciao bella!
ps: LOVE the purple heels!
i agree w/ you sart, they are far from distasteful!
She makes it look completely effortless! And I want her purple sandals in the second photo!
wow!
what a sense of style,, everything looks so classy and then the sunglasses!
i lovvvvvvve her outfits,
especially the second one.
she looks a bit like audrey tautou
The dress itself is great, but somehow the layering in the second picture does not feel right. It lacks »logic«.
Sweater and jacket make the dress seem like underwear ...
I think it looks much better layered, mostly since I'm not crazy about the dress itself. I think the uneven 'shirt' hem is too much with the shirt styling of the rest of the garment: it makes the wearer look like she forgot to put on pants. The layering, though, is unusual in a good way. There's a fun masculine-feminine play between the baggy boyfriend sweater and scarf vs. the sexy sandals and girly pink bag.
Perfect... The personification of "style".
love love love
the juxtoposition of these two dresses shows that she really understands how her closet intereacts. not a style victim just copying off the runway
she makes it her own
Giovanna rocks!!! Sempre!!
absolutely love that dress! in both ways worn!
Simply wonderfull...when semplicity is "tres chic". I love those stiletto shoes! They makes her legs seem so long....wow!
The most beautiful legs ever photographed on this blog!
Angelo
wow, both work so amazingly well even though they're complete opposites
She is absolutely wonderful
Both of choices are marvellous.
A perfect mix between Audrey Hepburn and Carrie Bradshaw.
please find more examples like this! I love how she took the same dress and wore it two different ways, to different effect. I'm also a huge fan of fuss-free dressing. A good look...not too too minimalist and sleek, so the effect isn't severe, but just the right amount.
