Women Have It So Easy Right Now

Throw on a great dress and a good sandal and you're done - I guess the trick is finding those few "right dresses" of the season but still.

Do guys ever look as "put-together" in shorts and a shirt as women do in a little summer dress?....sometimes, maybe, rarely...but not nearly as often and as easily as women.

Sartorialist, are you fantasizing about donning a pink muumuu gown in a tropical flower print? be honest now!

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (10:27 AM) :

no way

I would look like Flip Wilson in that

if you are under 25 ask your parents about that reference

Blogger Carlene said ... (10:28 AM) :

This is a great look (and I love her puppy, too). I'll bet the guys on this board don't like this "easy" look, though...too mumu, no leg or waist.

My husband is a huge fan of drawstring linen trousers for summer, and wears them instead of shorts, with just a nice t-shirt (untucked, and not too long). He always looks cool and put together, if I do say so myself.

Anonymous AnonymousJK said ... (10:29 AM) :

Even the dog looks stunning! Double Sigh!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:29 AM) :

Very relaxed and chic. Any idea where the dress is from?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:32 AM) :

But the always beautiful basenji dog has it even easier. B****! ;)

Blogger londondog said ... (10:39 AM) :

She looks sooo this season - so fresh and summery. Love the dress (fab sandals too) but I'd cinch it in the waist with a big tan leather belt to take the 'oriental nightie' edge off it.

But the most important element is of course the dog - he/she utterly gorgeous - v. foxy and certainly knows how to pose.

Blogger The Sporting Life Society said ... (10:42 AM) :

Beautiful light...myfavorite time of day. Men can get close with jeans and a linen shirt.

Blogger The Sporting Life Society said ... (10:43 AM) :

Great light! Men can get close with some jeans and a linen shirt...

Blogger william d. anderson said ... (10:48 AM) :

that is so true. i've been thinking about men's fashion a lot lately, and i honestly believe in some ways its much harder for men to look great. its easy to look okay, but to do it well. its really tough. and their's not a lot of help out there either.

on the flip side, i'm so glad that women wear such beautiful summer dresses...i wouldn't begrudge them that.

Blogger Cut of cloth said ... (10:49 AM) :

Unfortunately I'm not under 25
But am from the Uk so Flip Wilson is lost on me
However The frock is great
&
I think some men could get away with the look if they desired...
The dog is rather sweet too

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

Her skin is so peachy. Nice compliment to the mumu...

Blogger olivia said ... (11:10 AM) :

this shot makes me wish that it's summer here in australia :( alas, it's still the beginning of winter over here...

Anonymous Carla said ... (11:30 AM) :

That is Keren Craig, 1/2 of Marchesa....right?

Blogger kate said ... (11:32 AM) :

love love love that dog!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:34 AM) :

Easy, breezy, summery, maybe - but flattering? This would look like one hot nightgown of a mess on most of the women I know.

Anonymous Cory said ... (11:37 AM) :

Exactly. Not only is it a simple and chic look, but it's so comfortable. The equivalent for guys would be cotton shorts and a wife-beater tank. The antithesis of simple and chic.

Blogger Opulent CerriLynn said ... (11:39 AM) :

Men can do it. I witness the finesse of my husband dressing in the morning. He slips on a suede summer loafer (fratelli rossetti)...a linen shirt and jeans. All in about five minutes. I find his simple style...just that....simple...but, style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:59 AM) :

She is gorgeous and I love the dress. Not sure if its vintage (probably not and was absurdly costly) but if it was vintage and it was me I would have hemmed it to above the knee to give it a younger, lighter feel.

Anonymous Heather Outside Boston said ... (12:15 PM) :

It's one of the best things about being a woman -- even a shortwaisted one with a few extra pounds -- I can throw on a dress, I'm comfortable, I only have to co-ordinate shoes and jewelry, I don't come untucked, and everyone thinks I'm dressing up. I'm happy to see you (and your readers) appreciate the ease and elegance. (I even wear dresses in the winter with boots.)

Anonymous FitzroyDavis said ... (12:17 PM) :

I disagree - men can definitely look put together in warmer climates. A bright polo with a pair of khaki shorts and Sperry Topsiders is an American classic. Or, pair them with matching or contrasting rubber flipflops. There is so much versatility in these simple pieces - from tucking or untucking, to wearing a great ribbon belt, chino shorts with a white polo, to colored Sperrys, wearing shorter length shorts or bright madras (with a polo to pick up on its colors), even nuances like leaving the polo unbuttoned or popping the collar can create a look that is simple, clean, and epitomizes the American summer. I think polos always look best when are a little higher on the arm and are closer to the body, and aren't paired with cargo shorts of any kind. Let fit, proportion, and balance be the mantra.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 PM) :

She reminds me of Uli and her aesthetic from Project Runway.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (12:21 PM) :

Have to admit that was my approach to summer this year. I deliberately targeted a number of dresses for both work and play, as opposed to tops and bottoms.

It is as you say, just throw on the dress, pair with fabulous shoes and you're set!

Blogger Kristina said ... (12:22 PM) :

I think it is deeply important to have a basenji pup in all his sleekness nearby to balance the fullness of the dress. I must remember this technique in the future.

Anonymous shoe lover said ... (12:43 PM) :

We never have it easy, Sart. The right dress sure helps, though, that's true. This picture really says "summer." I can't wait for more!

Anonymous TeMo said ... (12:45 PM) :

I think if men did some nice tunics /longer tops influenced by North African and Indian styles + linen pants, great sandals, and then yep just as easy.

Anonymous Mathias from Denmark said ... (12:48 PM) :

you are so right: girls have got an easy time, with nice shoes and a nice little dress, and boom! they look amazing. I've been spotting people for my street-style-blog today, and it's much harder to find a well-dressed guy, when everyone is wearing shorts and a polo. It can be nice, but it will never get the same level of simple sophistication as the girls achieve.

Blogger Claire said ... (1:06 PM) :

It helps that it's a good dress season. Other times it's more about the skirt or cropped pants.

How cute is the dog. Is it an Ibizan?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:11 PM) :

No thanks...she's lovely but this formless dress makes her look 40 years older than she is.

Anonymous Laura said ... (1:16 PM) :

Hmmm... can't say I'm really digging the dress, but I love that you showed a woman who doesn't have on heels!!

Blogger Asian Models Blogger said ... (1:27 PM) :

Sart, she looks great because she's young, tall, slim and beautiful. The outfit looks good on her.

On the same token, a handsome young man (say Jake Gyllenhal) will look great in short, t-shirt and sandals too.

Blogger jeff said ... (1:29 PM) :

I'm just getting a very "Mrs. Roper" vibe from this ensemble. Just add the oversized jewelry and she's good to go.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:33 PM) :

your grandma called, she wants her dress back.

I think this looks works well for her, but only because she's so easy on the eyes.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (1:37 PM) :

She looks great! Love her look!

Blogger Alexandra said ... (1:43 PM) :

ha ha ha
Leave it to a guy to say dressing is easier for women than men. I can't believe more women aren't laughing out loud at this one.
IMHO, shorts and a shirt are in NO WAY equivalent to a dress and sandals. We live in a time that women can and do wear shorts - and have the same problems as men doing it elegantly, particularly in the city. Dresses are quite simply one or more steps up from shorts.

Blogger lewehrman said ... (1:57 PM) :

I wrote a paper about Flip Wilson, my junior year in high school. Yikes what does that say about me!

I don't think you would look like Flip but stay away none the less.

Loving the maxi dress for the summer. The length is great, not dusting the ground.

She looks fab! Very Peggy Guggenheim!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

i dont like the dress, and must agree it is hard to find the dresses that make it easy...but once you find them, then sure, ill agree it is so easy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:41 PM) :

What a funny thing to read -- as a young woman I'm always envious of men who can just throw on a pair of slim dark jeans and white tee and still look so fresh! Plus they can wear those jeans day after day....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

Isn't she one of the designers for Marchesa?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

Ha! I get the Flip Wilson reference. Maybe post should read: Thin Women Have It So Easy Right Now. No one else can rock the muu-muu.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:05 PM) :

This poor woman is wearing my Aunt Bertha's duvet cover!

Blogger platinum blonde said ... (3:26 PM) :

she is fabulous as is her pup.

Blogger David said ... (3:35 PM) :

She is stunningly beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:38 PM) :

so easy... pedicures, waxing, plucking, scrubbing, self-tanning, make-up, weight watching, thongs riding up our butts, and underwire bras cutting into our skin!

Oh, what fun it is to simply throw on a dress and go!

Blogger Candid Cool said ... (3:44 PM) :

Beautiful dress, and cute pup. I also like the jeweled sandals, so much better than rubber flip flops.

Blogger Heather said ... (3:48 PM) :

I too think this dress looks muumuu-esque. At least with the tent minidresses you get to see some leg. And I'm saying this as a straight woman.

Would love to see more examples of men looking stylish in the summer. I'm trying to help my boyfriend find a summer look that's comfortable, sporty and relaxed but more refined than cargo shorts and boxy striped polos. I feel like stylish summer clothes for men are the Holy Grail of fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:51 PM) :

someone help me out! i have a funeral to go to and i have no idea what to wear. assuming i have nothing but a pair of brown leather shoes and an H&M budget. what does one wear to a long island funeral?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:57 PM) :

That's Keren Craig from Marchesa

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:34 PM) :

this might just be the best post ever.

i l.o.v.e. the dress, her skin, her DOG!, everything about it.
the color of this dress is strikingly attractive and with her blonde hair and tan skin she can't go wrong.

with our lovely woman here, it seems as though she's pulled off brilliantly the "effortless" look without actually putting effort into this at all. what could be better than that?
unfortunately for men, it doesn't seem to work quite as easy.

Blogger MCHL MCHL said ... (4:39 PM) :

Is that a real dog?!

I want one.

A real one.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

Isn't that Keren Craig from Marchesa?

Blogger PLATFORM said ... (5:05 PM) :

Her dog is the best accessory because he looks like a fox. That is, a real fox folks.

Blogger Wintermute said ... (5:36 PM) :

Great dress? No way. That, kids, is a muu muu. No way around it.

My neighbor Heloise has one very similar. I imagine the lady in the pic smells better, but Heloise always smells like cigarettes and plastic, presumably from the covers on her couch.

Blogger Christi said ... (5:49 PM) :

I'm sorry, but I don't get it. She is beautiful, fresh, and healthy looking. A real woman. But that dress... Has anyone seen Goodfellas? That dress reminds of the mistress' apartment.

Blogger Iheartfashion said ... (6:12 PM) :

What a great look! Pretty, tropical, and extremely easy to wear.

Blogger Jennine said ... (6:13 PM) :

yes, this is very welcome.... actually i was watching old episodes of seinfeld (yes) and noticing how elaine wore much more lose fitting clothing than what we have been accustomed to. It dawned on me that in the past 10 years ultra-fitted clothing has pretty much been the norm. i'm glad to see this shift, but even more glad to see the shift in consciousness that's coming along with it.

Blogger whyioughtta said ... (6:46 PM) :

Ooo...I adore every element of this, all the way down to the adorable pup. I love that she left her dress loose...very "60s hostess attire" in a good way.

Blogger sofie king said ... (6:57 PM) :

r.e. anonymous at 3.38:
I think it's ridiculous to assume that all women must go through "pedicures, waxing, plucking, scrubbing, self-tanning, make-up, weight watching, thongs riding up our butts, and underwire bras cutting into our skin" in order to be stylish and appear well put together. Many women featured on this lovely blog are pale, makeup-less, and/or over a size 2. I don't venture to speculate on the state of their underwear. I believe that it is laughably restrictive and narrow-minded to define beauty with such a prescription; while some women do these things look amazing, many who do just some or even none of them are also beautiful and stylish ladies.

Blogger IASSART. said ... (7:04 PM) :

I love that little dog.She looks nice and fresh also.

Blogger Deja Pseu said ... (7:47 PM) :

She's lovely, but that dress would wear me rather than the other way aroung.

Anonymous fawn said ... (9:35 PM) :

even the leash matches! now that is glamor. not tasteful (when is a muumuu ever tasteful?) but definitely talitha getty-fabulous.

Anonymous Jennifer Jeffrey said ... (9:48 PM) :

Enough with the mumu comments!

You, like me, wish you: a) could find a dress like that and b) looked as good in it as she does.

Gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:20 AM) :

The dog is adorable

Blogger Nameless4Now said ... (4:32 AM) :

Wonderful, even the leash fits into her colour scheme, but maybe the pup should have been blue?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:21 AM) :

That´s the girl from Marchesa, and she is wearing sandals from Zara!

Blogger Belinda said ... (8:23 AM) :

Isn't she lovely! So cool, fresh, relaxed, colourful and comfortable - enough to brighten anyone's day should they be lucky enough to encounter her ;o)

Blogger Kat said ... (10:14 AM) :

The other day in Spain I saw a man wearing white linen pants, sandals, and a fitted black t-shirt. Same effect, and he looked amazing. Provided, you have to be in decent shape. But then that's just another part of the "so easy" that women have it. ;)

Blogger L. said ... (10:41 AM) :

She is gorgeous and eye-catching, no doubt about that, but the muu muu comments stem from what she's wearing: a muu muu.

Blogger the little bird said ... (12:46 PM) :

i loooove dresses. the best article of clothing, ever. so easy and comfortable. i justify all my dress expenditures by splurging on beautiful ones that can be worn all year 'round, though - with stockings and knee socks and sweaters in the winter, with bare legs and lip gloss in the summer. hooray for being a girl!

Blogger hazel said ... (1:51 PM) :

i'm sorry sart i love your eye for fashion but the only thing that makes this outfit work is the dog, and the fact that the woman is tall blonde and skinny. the dress screams dowdy nightgown. but maybe that's what style is about...being able to pull something off that would otherwise look dowdy...but then that means as long as your tall blonde and skinny anything would look good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:32 PM) :

Sorry, that's not style.
It's a mumu.
Like my Nana wears around the house.

Blogger Carla said ... (6:48 PM) :

Looks like my grandmothers nightgown. And I don't agree, I have rarely seen a woman here over a size 2.

Anonymous Acris said ... (9:28 PM) :

Awww a Basenjii! (the dog)

Anonymous gila said ... (10:42 PM) :

she is so very pretty. (but her toes are quite crooked) :)

and, yes, it's true. and there are so many lovely dresses of this type floating about NYC these days.

Anonymous NQ said ... (4:46 AM) :

The matching leash makes it for me, but also makes me wonder if this woman planned her entire outfit around walking the dog.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:51 AM) :

Fabulous! I like the carefree summery looseness of it. Light and flowy enough to suggest the body without revealing it. I wouldn't blame men if they were envious.
(BTW: love the shout-out to Flip Wilson ... haven't thought of him in years!)

Blogger Carol Diehl said ... (10:08 AM) :

I'm not sure who has it easier in the summer--I mean yes, the right dress and sandals, for sure, but FINDING the right dress and sandals is another thing. As for men, I'm a sucker for guys in crisp white shirts and jeans that fit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

yes, that is Karen from Marchesa. I think very few women can pull that look off (if you are a bit on the plus side, you will appear bigger; if you petite/thin, you can get swallowed up in it). Karen pulls it off perfectly! i do agree, the tan skin, blonde hair pulled and the dog add to it.

i am sure she is just running errands and walking the dog. i don't think this kind of dress would be appropriate for work, etc.

You have to be kidding?
This woman is gorgeous!

I love her style and the way she is clearly very comfortable with who she is!
I would rather look at her than a skin tight, low rider wearing, stomach exposed woman half her age any day.

Another oldie reference,

I'd sell the farm for her!

Blogger AnastasiaC said ... (9:04 AM) :

she looks relaxed and laid back but super chic at the same time
the coral colours suit her SO much!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:16 PM) :

the dress is very grandma-ish. but i love the fact that Rover is posing for the pic. ;-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:29 PM) :

This look works because the dog's leash cuts across that muu muu and makes it look like a belt. That is a lot of fabric. She carries if off okay but on the wrong type it would like like a couch walking towards you!!!

Anonymous Ané said ... (1:31 PM) :

the print is really lovely and very summery

Anonymous whitney Kelt said ... (12:03 AM) :

Here's another reference to the 70's....can you say "Mrs. Roper"? I'm probably one of the few who actually liked her mumus. By the way I love your site. I'm going to Paris in July wishing you'd be there to snap my picture. ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:40 PM) :

yes that's keren craig from marchesa....VERY cool....LOVE all their clothes..........

Anonymous Tricia Garrett said ... (9:08 AM) :

I haven't visited here for ages. My first comment I think......
and it was the dog that did it for me.
As for the frock.....great colour with the tan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:53 PM) :

So funny you should say this because I always think that MEN have it so easy when I look at all the great guys you find! Of course, many of the people you photograph make it look so easy. That seems to be part of the charm, like the have captured the moment perfectly with their clothes.

Anonymous Keri said ... (10:39 PM) :

everything from head to toe and the dog look gorgeous!
