On the Street........Casual Friday in Midtown, Manhattan

I find it is hard for a shorter guy ,like both Robert and myself, to wear light colored pants.
The fact that his pants are cut pretty slim (or at least more slim than most khakis) really helps keep a good overall balance for him.

Until you pointed it out, I never realized that it was the khakis' cut that made so many smaller guys seem 'wide.' The slimmer cut is exactly right. I've seen too many smaller guys 'augment' themselves with these generously-cut trousers.

On another note: there was a huge improvement in my father's look (he was 5'10") when he took my suggestion and changed from pleated-front to flat-front khakis; he looked slimmer automatically, and he loved it.

I think everyone looks better in a narrower cut, and for that matter, flat-front.

Very clean, wrinkled linen especially on a well built blazer always gets my vote !!
The loafers in tan, excellent.

And it helps that, in addition to a high level of taste (Saks or Bergdorf guy?), he has access to some of the finest closet in the world (either NY Saks, or Bergdorfs...)

He does look damn fine in this picture...

This guy looks ok-all around and anywhere. There is nothing surprising nor irritating. This man you could come accross anywhere from LA to Helsinki-Finland.

mr. burke is always so chic. he always looks fresh and cool, all american.
love!

Nice overall look.

I can't abide tasselled shoes. Otherwise natty.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:43 PM) :

well done

Never could understand the forums' dislike of tassle shoes. They're very traditional, and common. They look very nice here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:52 PM) :

I particularly like his glasses and blue blazer. The classic shape and color of his frames coupled with the timelessness of his jacket create a sophistication that evokes the Ivy Leagues, English studies, Ralph Lauren, and bit of Richard Gilmore.

Very nice nuance of blue. For me the jacket is a little too short but it is compensated by the fact that the trousers are not, as it is too often the case in the US.And the color of the Alden/Brooks brothers tassel loafers is wwell matching with the rest of this out

The tailoring here is VERY good--jacket as well as pants.

White is a difficult color for a short guy--especially when worn on the "bottom half," as here. It tends to draw attention to shorter legs. But the line is kept so nicely here, top to bottom, that his relative shortness is actually camouflaged.

What is a 'shorter guy' ? I'm a good 5'10'' (1,79m) and wide shouldered, so I kinda feel really squat and puffy in some outfits. Have you got any simple tips for guys like me Sart' ? How tall are you ? Merci pour ton chouette blog.

Blogger Paulo A. Pereira said ... (8:52 PM) :

i concur on the tasselled shoes. otherwise picture perfect.

Blogger Dwacon said ... (10:11 PM) :

Why break up the white with a dark jacket?

Wow! He seems so like a kindred spirit of Geoffrey Beene; which is such a good thing! In his own right he's truly stylish. Very nice, indeed.

You must be right because he doesn't look short at all. He looks like he's at least 5'10" in the photo.

Actually, I like the dark jacket with light trousers look than a full formal suit.

Good looking guy, that Robert.

Scott, an excellent choice. The whole look is a Classic. And I agree 100% with other comments pointing out that it's a look that carries men of a certain vintage anywhere. More younger guys should adopt it also. A variation is of course the tried and tested (and New Classic) of the fresh jeans and blazer. I hope you don't mind me mentioning that Gant - now rejuvinated - market fantastic jeans of amazing cut and quality that set this look off perfectly. Flat front pants on shirter chaps work great - they lengthen the leg and slim the torso creating the 'taller' illusion. Nice briefcase in quality leather and natty tan raincoat/Barbour jacket and this guy could be an Executive or Journalist or anything.. anywhere globally. Superb. But how mnay of this type do we see in airports daily? Hardly any... Instead, dreadful chinos, golf shirts, running shoes and appalling computer bags and bulging stomachs. And - of course - the nasty phone/PDA thing attached to waistbands which cry, 'Yes, I am a drone...'

Being 5'10", I'm ultramini compared to most guys here in The Netherlands where the people are the tallest in the whole world (average height for men and women in my country are respectively 6'2" and 5'7")

This man looks really nice. And doesn't look short at all. I love his pants!

The shoes! Love the shoes!!

i always appreciate your sartorial shop talk! this is where i'm getting my fashion education. :)

I think the very well cut blazer also helps this gentleman from appearing wide. I would also like to add that a shorter blazer, jacket, top, etc. can visually heighten a smaller person's overall appearance, especially if the legs are shorter in proportion to the torso.

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (9:39 AM) :

Excellent look - and yes, shorter men should not wear baggy pants or very loose tops and jackets cause it makes them look shorter.

Blogger londondog said ... (10:39 AM) :

While I like the top half - nice, well fitted jacket, crisp shirt, lovely pocket square and the fabulous specs, the bottom half is a bit of a let down. The trousers look fair bit like chinos and the tasseled shoes just don't do it for me. V. stylish from waist up, golf club manager from waist down.

Robert Burke, while a completely lovely man, is even shorter than 5'10". I've worn heels every time I've met him, which always throws my judgement off, but I would say he's about 5'8" or 5'9", for those of you trying to gauge at home. He's an impeccably stylish man in every way.

Blogger Just an Observation said ... (4:36 PM) :

ALWAYS POINTING OUT SOLID GOOD POINTS....love that about U're comments.

I guess it may help to have subtle vertical stripe to make the image overall bottom half seem more vertical rather horizontal...just a thought.

I have notice the same when short people have large window pane pants ....again the same effect!

THX SAR!
