New York Bikes with Style

Just click on the Bicycles link below if you want to see more stylish men and women from around the world on bikes.

Just for the record, I do wear my helmet when I ride a bike
If I lived on the quite streets of Park Slope, Brooklyn I might not but the traffic in the city is just too crazy.

Instead of trying to copy the very chic Europeans bikers I think we (Americans) should do what we are good at - and that is Sporty/Tech.

I would love to see a sleek young lady in a little black jersey dressed tied-up on one leg, on an equally sleek black mountain bike wearing some kinda of silver reflective sash or form fitted vest (but really well-designed) and reflective wristbands, Raybans, and some sleek, form-fit mountain climbing shoes (those really tiny ones with the nubby soles) or even heels (like that lady I shot in Paris) and a cool racing helmet.

Imagine mixing Polo Sport with Comme Des Garçons - now that would look cool with really techy bike gear.

We should have a contest on who can submit the best photo of their Chic/Tech bike look.

Maybe we can find a cool sponsor to throw in a prize.

This kinda of small reflective vest could be really chic if designed correctly - for womens maybe add more mesh on the sides so it is not so hot in the summer and a racer back

just an idea

Combining stripes and floral is not a no-no when you have great legs, wear a panama hat and ride a bicycle in NY ... This is totally gorgeous.

Blogger simplyolive said ... (9:01 AM) :

she is perfection on a bicycle! love the hat. (why aren't there more fashionable bicyclists in places other than new york?)

Blogger Allen said ... (9:10 AM) :

she looks lovely

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:28 AM) :

She is lovely.

The only disturbing element with this great scene is this poor woman is forced to carry not one, but two bike locks!

Blogger Karen E. said ... (9:35 AM) :

Mmmm, j'adore!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 AM) :

Since I started following you blog, the urge to buy a bicycle has become almost irresitible, because of your pictures (especially this one; utterly charming!)

If you don't have a coffee table book deal for your cycle shots, you should.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 AM) :

anyone know where to get a perfectly understated straw hat like that, in NYC?

Anyone know where to get a great hat like this in NYC?

The bike pictures continue to be some of your best. Keep them coming.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:27 AM) :

Im totally addicted to your blog!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

I would always say yes to a woman with a hat like that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

I'm sorry, but I really wish she'd wear a helmet. As cute as she looks, a helmet ensures she'll remain cute. I once fell off my bike, and my helmet got smashed, not my head. As dorky as they look, they are essential.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

I really love going around the city by bike! She looks lovely!

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:59 AM) :

Love it! Love it! It reminds me of some of the looks I saw on the West Coast and Hawaii.

The floral motif is coming bac and it doesn't seem to matter what it's paired with!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:59 AM) :

you can go to canal street or there are a few shops on Broadway/6th Avenue and 32nd street. they will run you about $20.

Blogger Amblus said ... (11:01 AM) :

I have to agree. You only have to have one nasty crash before cute takes second place to safety. You can still be cute in a helmet! I do it all the time.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:03 AM) :

God, I want to be this girl. The hat! The legs!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

Brilliant picture, brilliant style!

That´s chutzpah!

Blogger pumpkin said ... (11:29 AM) :

love it! an inspiring mix.

Blogger Michelle said ... (11:39 AM) :

meh....her lack of helmet disappoints :(

Blogger DeepBlueSea said ... (11:51 AM) :

Can't help reflecting on her fresh clean fair skin, amidst the traffic fumes and soot that's being spewn out all around her.

But the style is superb.

Yeah, if only she had a lovely wide square a la Paris or at least a good bike route to use...

Did I say she's the coolest?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 AM) :

alternatively - new york bikes strike back. love the hat. pretty legs, of course.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:58 AM) :

I agree with the anon above. I hate seeing so many people riding around on busy city streets with no helmets!

Sartorialist, maybe you can find some pics of someone fashionably dressed and wearing a bike helmet?

Blogger whyioughtta said ... (12:06 PM) :

Fedorable.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

I LOVE these bike shots in theory (everyone looks so cool and easy-breezy) but the latent mom voice in me starts shrieking "Traumatic Brain Injury! Traumatic Brain Injury!" every time I see someone in NYC riding without a helmet, thanks to a physical therapist friend who had many, many clients who suffered TBI due to bike accidents. It only takes one unexpected cab door to open in front of you and down you go.

Blogger ek said ... (12:11 PM) :

What's she riding though? It looks like a fixie/60's era commuter hybrid, something out of Japan. Good use of the front basket. Nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 PM) :

I'm a bit concerned with the cycling faux pas she is making with her dual u-locks hanging loosely on the frame of her bike. I imagine that in motion her lovely casual appearance is disturbed by their noisy, amateurish clanking. Lay them down in your basket, at least!

Otherwise she is the kind of gal I never see while riding my bike. Lovely!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 PM) :

For hats, try the Eugenia Kim sample sale tomorrow; lots of great straws on offer. Some are trimmed wackily, but all have potential. Cheers.

Blogger Brett Svatek said ... (1:00 PM) :

The sandals look a little "Peppermint Patty", but the bicycle is understated and functional so it all works.

Blogger Decent said ... (1:02 PM) :

"she is perfection on a bicycle! love the hat. (why aren't there more fashionable bicyclists in places other than new york?)"
...try looking at bike pictures from Copenhagen. They're much cooler!

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:04 PM) :

Love those "Palis" she's wearing too! Those are the most comfortable rubber sandals ever, and they look great! I'm never without mine spring and summer.

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:04 PM) :

the mixed patterns and hat...she carries it off so well. and great action shot. you almost feel like you're there.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

She's very cute. I love her legs....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:22 PM) :

The bike shots are great! They have inspired me to get a bike to ride to the train station in the mornings. For Father's Day, my wife asked what I wanted. I replied, "a stylish bike!"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:40 PM) :

I really don't like the slippers, but I loove that hat and that bike!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:01 PM) :

I'm assuming she's using a coaster brake, otherwise the lack of front brakes would make this setup even more dangerous wearing sandals.

Still, those legs...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:07 PM) :

PErfect. It's the bike, the long long legs and the hat that make it. It's like a movie poster picture. Regarding helmets, are there any sort of cute ones out there? I agree that they are essential.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:11 PM) :

I am relieved to see that others are concerned about her lack of a helmet-- when it comes to safety, this is one area where fashion should suffer-- unless, of course, a fashionable helmet is designed...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:18 PM) :

Those legs! She looks lovely, just like summer. Great shot. Picture to replace the panama hat with a helmet: that would ruin the composition completely. I was never able to bring myself to wear a helmet too, so I understand her choice pretty well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

the main thing sticking out to me is her amazing legs---must be all the biking

also--she really needsa helmut. ny drivers can be crazy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:31 PM) :

Good luck finding a fashionable helmet. It is their ugliness that causes people not to wear them, but I wish they would. I always wear one.

Sartorialist, you should post pictures of stylish byciclists wearing helmets, then maybe people would be encouraged to wear them!

Blogger hoi polloi said ... (4:01 PM) :

Very cute outfit :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:10 PM) :

i'm relieved to see so many helmet comments. of course i understand her desire to forego one -- she looks great. but lets call this what it is: vanity. my friend was badly injured recently riding around on her bike, looking lovely, helmet hanging off the handles. it's not a joke. and (i say this as a huge sartorialist fan, who thinks all your bike shots are lovely) i think it's a bit irresponsible to create this "biking without a helmut in big cities" mystique through all these incredible photographs. you have inspired so many to go ride adorable bikes, but not to be safe. i don't mean to point the finger, but if lovely, fashionable people everywhere really took to heart the fact that it is just NOT okay to ride without a helmut, think how many people's brains we'd save.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:12 PM) :

Her look is lovely; the proportions on her are just right, and the flowers and stripes look fresh on her.

However, I must echo the concern over her headwear. The hat is pulled too low over her eyes, and it seems (from this angle, at least) that she has to tilt her head at a certain angle. Not good when you need your reflexes to be sharp on NYC streets.

Helmets--not chic, but I just know some New Yorker will be able to pull it off with aplomb.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:12 PM) :

I love how she threw the hat into the mix. It really works to balance out her great legs.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:56 PM) :

It's interesting, isn't it? There are *hoards* of stylish young things cruising around on bicycles, yet no stylish helmets. Where are the marketing experts who advise the manufacturers? Surely it wouldn't be that difficult to design a nice looking helmet...

Having said that, I think that most people are well aware of the danger of not wearing one, and seeing a lot of pictures won't be enough to make someone who is planning to protect their head change their mind.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:04 PM) :

Great to see all the comments about her lack of helmet. As someone in the medical field, seeing head injuries from bicycle accidents extremely frequently, it's quite worrying to see all these gorgeous girls without adequate head protection. Do you really want to die for fashion?

ps. she does of course look lovely.

Blogger -ONE-PUCK- said ... (5:25 PM) :

Stylish girl on stylish but not so flashy bike.
simple vintage black steel frame, chrome fender, flat fork crown, and a basket ... no busy brake cable can be seen, thanks for the drum brake....
America need more cute people on bikes, and no helmet is ok in some situation, I have never seen anyone in Amsterdam with helmet, (of course safety) maybe because US drivers need to learn to share the road with cyclists, yet more cute cyclists will assured that attention.
Don't get me wrong, All cyclists should be responsible for their own safety. If you just gonna hop on your bike to go around the corner to Italian deli and have a cup of coffee, then is alright to leave the helmut at home. BUT if you are going ride somewhere between cars, 25 mph, then that a diferent story.

Blogger sara said ... (5:29 PM) :

Why aren't there more fashionable bicyclists outside NYC - hang out in Minneapolis sometime. I've spotted women on bicycles the Sartorialist would love, not to mention the slender handsome young black man in the cherry-red double-breasted suit on a bicycle downtown as long ago as 1986 (only a fond memory, no picture alas).

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (5:33 PM) :

Great photo! She looks fantastic!

Blogger Model Citzen said ... (6:06 PM) :

there's a certain coolness factor about riding a bike in new york city. It's just screams, I'm a local...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:09 PM) :

Yes, she is lovely. But it does look like a magazine shot, in which practicality matters not at all. Aside from the helmet issue, biking in flip flops is extremely dangerous. I had a nasty spill in college caused by the pedal getting stuck between my foot and flip flop. If she keeps riding around like this she could scar up those gorgeous legs for good. Of course, she's beautiful and the photo is beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:11 PM) :

are we ever going to be able to buy some of your prints?!

Blogger j said ... (6:29 PM) :

She should be wearing a helmet (its actually a law where I live) which can look cool and athletic, but with legs like that she could be wearing a pumpkin on her head and no one would notice.

Blogger simplyolive said ... (7:28 PM) :

in everyone's reply to my comment "why aren't there more fashionable bicyclists in places other than ny"---i'm temporarily stranded in the midwest, where there are hardly any fashionable people...period. i know they exist in copenhagen, amsterdam, etc...that's a given.

Great capture, Sart!

Blogger Ali B. said ... (9:20 PM) :

Love the bike shots! They are FANTASTIC and BEAUTIFUL! BUT the lack of helmets makes me cringe! I refuse to ride with people who are anti-helmet. Cute isn't so cute when you are well... you know. Do you ever see people in "the city" wearing helmets?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:27 PM) :

Bike helmet stats: http://www.helmets.org/stats.htm

That said, I've been riding without a helmet for 30+ years. Learn how to fall. Don't be stupid. Watch for cars. Many times, cars hit cyclists b/c the cyclist doesn't know how to ride. A lot of it comes down to skill, and the average American just isn't as skilled as a Dutch or Belgian rider. We're overly safety-conscious as well; just be careful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:53 PM) :

Ok..glad you mentioned the helmet as your site has been inspiring me to go without, after all, they all seem to ride around European capitals without helmets. So, I think your commentary has pushed me to think about a helmet. If you see some chic riders in helmets, be sure to include them, will you?

Blogger Sarah M. said ... (10:11 PM) :

Honestly, I would bike everywhere if there was such thing as a cute bike helmet, it is that simple.

However, my dad is a bike commuter (and an avid environmentalist) and I would say he gets in a serious bike accident about every five years, and they would be a little more serious if he didn't wear his helmet every day.

For that reason, I will never not wear a helmet... so my vanity has kept me off my amazing vintage bike. Sad, but true.

Blogger tiffany... said ... (10:46 PM) :

what about all those cute messangers on their fast sporty road bikes!?
some of them are so cute and uniquely fashionable... (not to mention they work damn hard!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 PM) :

Pollapak - it's really NOT OK to ride a bike in NYC without a helmet. Amsterdam is an outlier with regard to bike-friendliness. NYC is a fast, hard City. We walk fast, we talk fast, we live fast - that's just the way it is. It might be nice to slow down occasionally, but if you do, you risk getting creamed by the rest of the City going about its business. Just today, I had to gently shove some French people out of the way in order to be able to make my way to work at something approximating a normal NY pace.
If you want to look lovely and cycle without a helmet, that's fine, but not here, unless you don't care about your head.
Bring on the Yohji/CDG/Margiela bike-wear!

I am so thrilled she's not wearing a helmet - we wouldn't see such a lovely hat if she was!

Seriously, the finger wagging over the helmet issue gets really tiresome. If only the people who feel so empowered to tell us beautiful cyclists what to wear would instead direct their disapproval and moralizing to aggressive and dangerous drivers, then I might be willing to compromise. As it is, it's hard to believe you're really taking this seriously.

Giro makes a stylish and perfectly functional women's bike helmet, "Skyla". Mine is black decorated with a lotus flower print in metallic gold, and the Chinese character for "lotus"...ironically, perhaps, in reference to the ancient tradition of foot binding?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:58 AM) :

I'm surprised by all the helmet/flip-flop safety comments. Here in Amsterdam, everyone cycles, no one wears helmets, plenty of people (including me) cycle in flip-flops, and yet, as far as I know, you don't see a particularly high incidence of bicycle-related head injuries here. What gives?

(Actually, now that I think about it, your European girls on bikes pictures didn't really elicit the same kinds of comments, so maybe NYC is perceived as particularly dangerous for cyclists?)

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:17 AM) :

Gah enough with the comments about cycle helmets. They're as bad as all the "tut tut shouldn't be smoking" comments every time a photo of someone with a cigarette appears. You know chaps, sometimes style takes precedent over safety, no? Is this is style blog or a health and safety blog????

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:34 AM) :

I'm a bit saddened by how many people are harping on her lack of helmet. What you should be harping on is the city's lack of attention to creating safe bike infrastructure. If we had real bike lanes and such like they do in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, we could all be perfectly safe riding around looking immensely stylish. That's why you never see anyone there except those awful spandex warriors who are more into the sport of bicycling than using their bike to go get coffee or to work, wearing helmets. Helmets make bicycling look unsafe (bicycling is safe; drivers are dangerous), which just discourages people from riding. It's a sad cycle we need to break out of.

We should all be able to ride in style without feeling like we're under seige. Gorgeous bikes are the ultimate accessory, and a great way to show off stylish shoes and hats.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:37 AM) :

Here are some stats: I beleive that the last time Dutch or Belgian rider won the tour was 1976. Yea It was a Belgian. Ameicans have had the title since 1999 so please back off on the skill thing.
Helmets are key, and its time to make them stylish.
I do love the panama hat though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:59 AM) :

Oh please!. Barely anyone in New York rides their bike with their helmet. It would be ridiculous riding just a few blocks and dress up all in bike gear when most likely the place where you may go to might not be suitable for that.

Maybe everyone other people would be wearing a helmet, but honestly, you would only look like a tourist that doesn't know any better.

I'm really surprised by this attitude actually. Obviously, you may not know too much about New York City after all .

I study a health related subject and I know how very bad the outcomes of head injuries can be.
Creating a bike safe environment doesn't reduce the risk a wohle lot, you just simply can fall anytime and hit your head on the curbeside.

Blogger winston said ... (3:58 PM) :

the way she is riding she really does not need a helmet even if she was doored I doubt she is travelling fast enough to fly of her bike and hurt herelf. The only people the should think abot wearing helmets in new york are the bike messengers. Even they usually have enough skill to not get hit or handle getting hit. I have fallen on my bike many times and I never wear a helmet, because I know how to fall, I know how to roll and keep my head of the ground. Anyways as to the original comment sart, a mountain bike is terrible for the city, this bike looks alot better, and it simply works alot better too. Would you rather ride some 50 pound monster with shocks you don't need and gears you will never use, or this simple light roadster?

Another suggestion for a helmet:

Viking is a brand of skateboard gear that makes nice rounded helmets with a sort of vintage feel. Definitely less sporty/techy than most and they come in a bunch of colors.

I am planning on getting a pink one before I go move to Boston and start biking again.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:02 AM) :

Reading all these comments by people complaining about her not wearing a helmet just makes me want to say, what business is it of yours anyways? I mean, certainly, if you want to wear a helmet and save your head from being smashed, then go for it! I guess I feel the same way I feel about smoking--I don't do it because I don't think it's worth the risk, but if someone chooses to do something "stupid" like that, that's their right. It's their life, not yours. Of course, things change when people's poor habits begin to affect those around them, etc...etc..., but it's not as if she's throwing out second hand non-helmet-wearing vibes or something. It's her choice, not yours, and it doesn't affect your health or safety. Sorry to rant, but I'm just so tired of people getting up on their high horses over things like this.

The photo is brilliant, and her style is so breezy, effortless and chic!

I'm not going to pontificate about wearing helmets but in Australia it is illegal not to. So personalise it. I have a giro one and have removed all the typical advertising ect. My three small children have done some lovely artwork on it for me, and I avoid the issue of 'helmet hair' by carrying a beret or canvas hat depending on the season, to slip on when the hemet comes off. It isn't ideal, but better than getting a fine or a head injury.

Enough preaching about wearing helmets, I say. Sure, it may be dangerous, but it's her choice. With regard to the concept of "encouraging being helmetless," you have to be mighty impressionable not to wear a helmet when you otherwise would just because of a cool picture of a girl you saw on the Internet. This girl has her style, you have yours. If your style includes a helmet, more power to you.

Here's a cute WaPo story today about Amsterdam Central station's 5-story bicycle-parking garage. Holland has 20 million bikes and only 16 million people!

i do love all of your pictures of stylish indivdiuals on bicycles. and all of them without helmets, i just don't know how they do it. i too would love to ride freely without a helmet... i wonder if there are some stylish types out there, maybe with some flare similar to balenciaga equestrian type ? would be nice...

I think this post came as a response to an email I sent you about wearing helmets and staying stylish... thanks so much for the always wise advice... A tech-ed up version is what we (Americans) should go for. I think I will do some shopping for a Y-3 adidas outfit... that should do the trick. - Kristi

I'm always so thrilled to see more of the bike shots! The portfolio I submitted to FIT's Menswear program included a few cycling apparel designs that are functional without looking tech... very classic, almost dressy. If I have any time to produce samples this year, I will definitely send them your way!

sart, you should come to san francisco, to the mission, to study our cycling style. you might have to stay a couple days to get shots that rival paris and nyc but there are definitely beautiful birds flitting down the streets here. and we have our own thing going, with little pops of punkiness.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:31 PM) :

yum! he's gorgeous!

Why won't anyone talk about the guy's helmet? It's really cool! Where can I get one like it? It looks kinda vespa-ish, but all the vespa helmets are big bulky motorcycle style things. Anyone have another idea?

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:24 PM) :

biking can be pretty tricky in Italy too...but u should visit towns like Bologna, Ferrara or Ravenna. Those are cities were bicycles are seen almost everywhere...

I'm too scared to ride my bike, even with a helmet in the streets of NYC. Too many crazy drivers, you know? If I saw her on the street, I would feel really anxious, since all she has protecting her head is a flimsy straw hat.

Women on bicycles are always beautiful!

Let's hope to see more ladies on bikes...

I'm a woman who rides bikes and horses, almost always with a helmet. Remember you can mod your own helmet to fit your style - matte grey paint goes nicely with a grey wool overcoat... Equestrian helmets are good for winter but generally too hot for summer. The summer versions look all too similar to bike helmets.

I only sometimes wear my helmet, why? afro and helmet does'nt mix. So I wear it when I tie my hair up...and when i see someone wearing a cool low profile helmet I cycle like crazy and ask where they got it...and its always impossible to find or out of manufacture...in Australia its law and one that i think we should be able to choose to abide-by by ourselves.

Oh cripes:

"Creating a bike safe environment doesn't reduce the risk a wohle lot, you just simply can fall anytime and hit your head on the curbeside. "

Simply untrue - I spend many weeks a year in Amsterdam, where there are no bikes but people, and the only helmets seen are on babies on the back of their parents' bicycles, and evangelists from the US. And they aren't all walking about brain-injured.

Here in Montréal we have fought for safe - and stylish - cycling for decades and won many bicycle paths and other amenities. The helmeted, lycra-lout type does exist here but they are less prevalent than in English-speaking North America.

I most certainly agree about dangers, but all the serious ones are caused by CARS.

As for bumping your head, you run far more risk of that changing a lightbulb in your kitchen.

The point is to make cities safer by reducing car use, traffic calming, and a great increase in dedicated bicycle lanes, lights and other measures.

I love seeing stylish cyclists!

Has anyone seen these fabulous helmet covers?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:09 PM) :

I see the recent bicycle post I just commented on wasn't labelled yet, but I want to say this is a lovely competition idea and I can't wait for it to happen! I've been a big fan of The Sartorialist and bicycles ever since I accidentally clicked a link here and found that beautiful girl in NY riding a bicycle here: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4686/1648/1600/LVBagBike.jpg

Go on with this fantastic idea!

I love the hat. I think it's a Panama hat, though, and they are more expensive than suggested here. If someone knows a place in Paris I can get one (that is not Bon Marche), that would be great.

Despite the new generation of helmets (Yakkay, bern etc), it still seems impossible for anyone to look stylish while wearing one.

Regardless of what clothes you wear, the new cool-helmets are just clownishly oversized, or will have you looking like a human cannonball, a german WWII soldier.

It seems like the safety vs style problem is unsolveable. I would really be pleased so see photos to prove this wrong.

Any advice on where I can purchase a helmet like the one the guy in the picture is holding? I am looking for a simple retro looking bike helmet.

Thanks!

Great Look! I know those flip flops are questionable, but I own a pair and I love them. They are the cheapest pair of sandals you can find in Hawaii. I lived there and bought them and didn´t use them for a year. Now I use them all the time, they are so comfy ..A simple pair of plain shoes would have worked too, but I like that she´s playing with these really cheap plastic sandals and making them fashionable.

Love the picture. I always wear my helmet when I ride my bike. This site has the most fashionable helmets I've seen: http://www.yakkay.com/
