On the Street..... Sodermalm, Stockholm

I think this is an unusually high level of sophistication for such a young lady AND she did it without spending a lot on designer labels.
- Plush textured coat with an interesting collar and it is not a trench which is the coat of the moment here.
- great dress that is short and has a young feel but still very good design details
- brilliant choice of dark plum tights
- a shoe with just enough height
- great hair

Young ladies like this, with this level of style, make hipsters seem a bit tired to me.

You're on notice East Village and Nolita - it's time to raise your game!

Love this shot. Love the site. This is now my home page...or should I say it is my home. Thank you for the daily pleasure you provide.xx

Blogger Blue Floppy Hat said ... (4:47 AM) :

And she also has the legs to pull it off...good job capturing this, Sart. It's cool and young and the coat collar makes it slightly whimscical at the same time- effortless loveliness is what she's a perfect illustration of.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:08 AM) :

Really nice! I just want to say how much I enjoy your site every day. You don't post a lot of pictures just to please someone, all though you shot a lot. Instead you publish them on a regular basis and with a thought behind. Good job!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 AM) :

I'm a very proud Södermalmer right now!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:20 AM) :

Cute girl, very nice coat! If I would say that, in Stockholm, it's "in" to have a certain focus, it's on coats right now :-) It's a big race for the most elegant, more interesting coat (it's cold here for a good part of the year). Very nice :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:23 AM) :

Nice. Good job! keep it up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:46 AM) :

Så prettyclean :D Katja approves the choice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:51 AM) :

She went to my school! I think her name is Julia :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:41 AM) :

I never understand where people find these amazing pieces. Like that coat... that is simply beautiful. Sometimes I feel like I could be stylish... if only I could find and afford clothes like that!!

Blogger Jocke said ... (8:01 AM) :

Finally some swedish pics! However, even though Södermalm is the most 'individual' part of town, you should really check out the other parts as well. How long will you be staying?

Blogger jojo said ... (8:05 AM) :

She is a "sylista" not a "fashionista"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:26 AM) :

agreed on the hipster deathwatch. so much easier to buy a tattoo than take the trouble to look like this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 AM) :

haha, i watched about the blog on the fashion tv podcast and came here immediately! the stuffs great!

Blogger erin renee said ... (8:49 AM) :

oh, my... goodness. i couldn't agree more. she is thee loveliest :)
grr, i'm so tired of all the young ones in my demographic looking the same as one another, or the next so and so, or such and such.
she's classic, and not pretentious.
thank you!

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (9:18 AM) :

She has such a great style! That coat is so beautiful, and I also love the dress and the shoes!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

Julia, my love! Always beautyful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 AM) :

för fan det är ju julia!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:45 AM) :

dear sart,
i agree when you say that it is time for the hipsters to raise their game.
it is all looking to formulaic and has been for a long time.
i guess i want to see something fresh and original again.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

The coat is a wonderful simple style and yes, it's that collar that makes it. She looks very stylish.

I like the simplicity of the coat and the collar makes it very stylish. She looks terrific

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:42 AM) :

She looks so cute and petite (do they mean the same thing?)

Blogger Ms. Laaw-yuhr said ... (12:35 PM) :

I really like all the textures in this look, and how the tights maintain the dark-neutrals color palette, but keep the look from being drab.

I also like her tidy hair. I always struggle with my hair in cold/wind so I appreciate a look that keeps the hair in place, but without resorting to a ponytail everytime.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:45 PM) :

Well put on the hipsters - the look has become so copied and commodified that the only thing it can really express is that 'hey, I'm part of a vague retro-looking youth culture.' (this coming from someone with slight hipster tendencies who also recognizes the 'tiredness' of the look)

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (12:52 PM) :

Brilliant proportion - bulky but short. Marc Jacobs would be proud.

Yes, I love the color coordination too. Everything look seamless from neck to toe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:04 PM) :

hipsters have always been a bit tired that's why they do so much blow

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:27 PM) :

hey you, don't forget to visit kungsholmen (fridhemsplan and surroundings) as well; beautiful, and 'hip'. hehe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 PM) :

really nice! I just love Stockholm :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:35 PM) :

Very stylish indeed. Great legs too - that helps a lot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

hwo fun you're here in sweden! too bad you wont be in gotherburg.. love the tights! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:52 PM) :

I'm thrilled to see that you found Södermalm! Isn't it just lovely?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:21 PM) :

Dear Sart,
I agree that this a very beautiful and stylish look. What's your opinion though on people so young looking classic?

Um senao, na vida a sempre um senao.. os sapatos - jamais sujos... Creio que a sofisticaçao esta na leveza do coordenado

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:11 PM) :

I love her youthful, elegant look. The palate is very sophisticated yet achievable. Is she carrying a white handbag? Did you ask what labels she was wearing? H&M? :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:21 PM) :

Love the coat! You're doing a great job, you should visit Gothenburg too :)

Blogger Sarah said ... (4:26 PM) :

Good thing I enlarged the photo, otherwise I would have missed the green color of the dress. Green and plum framed in grey? I LOVE the subtle peacock :)

I am always happy to see young women like this...in my early twenties, it is exactly how I would like to dress. Kudos, Sart!

Blogger The Spicers said ... (4:46 PM) :

I agree-beautiful details in the shawl-collared coat and dress. Love the proportion!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:33 PM) :

Södermalm, easily the best place to spot good outfits in Stockholm. At least when it comes to the young crowd. Götgatan and SOFO is a sure win.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 PM) :

Love the coat--I want to tackle her and run away with it. The dress has as you say just enough design detail. Perfect proportions. You are being very kind re: her hair, though. Still, despite that, she's beautiful and so is her look.

You have such a great eye, and so does she!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 PM) :

Dearest sart, I am so happy that you included the photo of this young LADY here. There is hope for the younger generation after all. I applaud her STYLE, which will last her lifetime. It is sincere and real. It will be the foundation of how she dresses for the rest of her life...just like the old days of Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy. She can add some "trend" to her look to keep it fresh, but the highest compliement I can give both you and her is that if one was to look at the photo, it would hard to place when it was taken, both my the technique of the shot (Bravo!) and the classic look of the subject, as is, I believe with any celebrated (fashion) photograpy. xoxoxo, lady

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:45 PM) :

Nicely done. I had previously posed a criticism of your photo of the young man with the scarf/necktie adornment that you were shooting generic photos of Euro-hipsters, but this photo has me eating my words. A cerebral look that reflects careful deliberation without feeling uncomfortably forced.

Blogger phoenix said ... (5:54 PM) :

She looks so pretty and her face is so fresh with little to no makeup.

Blogger savvylondon, jr. said ... (6:57 PM) :

perfection. really. that coat is superb. think it's time to make one...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

Several commenters seem to recognise this girl, Julia!

(Now I can't get the Beatles' tune out of my head...)

I wonder if she made the coat and/or the dress?

Beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:54 PM) :

heh... i have those shoes... Stephane Kelian. now, if i could only get my hands on that coat :)
beautiful outfit, beautiful girl. i miss stockholm.

Blogger Kelly said ... (8:14 PM) :

She looks wonderful...like she could walk onto a set of some great, moody Indie film.

Blogger blushing apples said ... (2:33 AM) :

she did an excellently job! she keeped it still young and hip but more sophisticated. Shes actually dressed age appropiate, didnt go to far with the elegance. gotta love the sartorialist for capturing these photo.

Blogger Isabelle said ... (5:16 AM) :

she's really cute. love her outfit ^^

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:43 AM) :

WHat is so refreshing here, and perhaps has elicited so much positive response, is that this girl is actually dressed elegantly, simply without pretense or exaggeration.

A young girl, dressed elegantly in sober shades of black and grey. How simple. How effective.

That's the point. Here is a lesson. Our eyes have picked it up and it's like a breath of fresh air.

Simple. Simple. Simple.

Good for her. She's learned this stylistic lesson early.

Sweet, sweet Julia!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 AM) :

that girl is stalking me. i've seen her on every fashion blog there is, and the last few times i've been on the subway - guess who's on the same train.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:06 PM) :

I LOVE your blog. Its so refreshing and inspiring. Thank you.

Blogger dnqcnn said ... (12:42 PM) :

dear girl on the photo,
can i borrow your legs for a few weeks? i promise you'll have them back in perfect shape.
kind regards,
danique
ps. you rock at the "cute" pose

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:28 PM) :

As you said, Sart, she does a very good job of highlighting her features. Thanks for sharing your passion with us.

Blogger will anderson said ... (4:32 PM) :

i fall in love so easy...

Blogger missx said ... (5:51 PM) :

One of my personal favorites. It seems like there's a huge shift against the skinny jean/hipster look now... even though I will still wear my black skinnies when it's one of those days where I can't make an effort.

The best part of the outfit is the color coordination- Grey, olive, plum, and black beautifully complement each other without making it look like she matched her whole outfit. This girl deserves an ovation.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:46 PM) :

Just tell me (If you can):

Where can I get the coat?

Blogger Carissa Duhamel said ... (10:13 PM) :

This look is fantastic, I wonder how old she is?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:10 AM) :

As a Sarah Lawrence student, I've also found myself tiring of the whole hipster look. It's all I see, day-in and day-out. This girl is dressed in an outfit that looks just like the sort of thing I'd wear-- it's simple and elegant, but at the same time a little bit quirky. And definitely still young. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:49 AM) :

Where does someone get plum tights?? What happened to the shopping list, sart?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 AM) :

channeling Chloe Sevigny? the collar of the coat and the shoes give it that classic timeless look.

Blogger la femme said ... (10:22 AM) :

wow.

Blogger JO said ... (5:51 PM) :

Stunning! Love her look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:18 PM) :

Sart, if you see her again can you buy the entire outfit off her? I will pay you lots for it! Just kidding... It's PERF! She should stroll around town in it everyday. Simple yet SO ORIGINAL. Perfect proportions and color mix. Love it. Thanks for this great shot!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 PM) :

absolutely gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

Love the tights. Can't wait for fall again.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:47 AM) :

nicely done lovely lady!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:26 PM) :

Lovely outfit and what an inspiration!
I'm going to get purlpe tights as soon as I can!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

It's all been said - perfectly done.

It inspired me when I got dressed for work this morning...
