post a commentSart, before your recent series from Italy and Germany, I didn't quite realize the difference in styles across Europe. Photos from Italy are all about great fit, vibrant colors, figure-enhancing fabrics, right-on accessories, sexy, curvy, age-defying people. The photos from Germany are all about shapeless, colorless, figure-unflattering, meh; most things fit poorly and look wrinkled. Even gorgeous women wear things that look like lab coats or car mechanic uniforms.

I'm amazed at how you catches the light on your subjects, Sart.
I'm a little bit tired of that cool Berlin style: T-shirts, jeans, sneakers.
Yeah, Germans are definitely 'different'...
I like that girl though.
I think this young woman looks amazingly sexy, simple and elegant all at the same time. Why don't Americans dress like this? People at the mall here look horrible in comparison.

I think it's probably true to say that many people in Germany have a more understated approach, compared to flamboyant Italians. Sure it's not as eye catching and bling as the Italian photos, but sometimes less is more, no?
But I really don't think it's fair to say it's all badly fitting lab coats...
I love the 'feeling' of this photo. The beautiful soft light, her expression. Also love the grey mix and those trousers. She looks great!
She's pretty but she looks like she just rolled out of bed...the outfit seems uninspiring.
No, no. This is like US circa 1990s post rave Saturday. Blah. I don't like this look anywhere. Effortless but should've put in some effort.
I think that if you went to a suburban mall in the US you'd find the same thing...and it would still be wrong.
Sometimes it's nice to NOT be all sexy sexy sexy, and this women does comfy (comfy-looking, anyway) quite well.

If I tried this outfit, I'd be one hot mess. But I think it works for her because she's 1) beautiful, 2) got great skin, and 3) got a confident attitude. I think personality has as much to do with being stylish as the clothes people wear.
She has a great confortable look, love the way she uses grey; Her pants are fantastic!
Once, long ago and far away, there WERE immediately recognizable national dress differences.
Today, though--for the most part and sartorially speaking--the world is one, with American dress most copied/influential, for better or worse.
Still, it IS interesting tease out--or to ascribe--difference in national dress.
i always thought that sart is a great photographer - some of my friends disagree - to them is just a little above average - but when i look at the new cultural variety here from places like germany, belgium etc i have to say: i am right. sart is great. - he has a consistent style throughout different cultures and on the basis of this (almost metaphysical) consitency (it is more than just taking pictures of people in similar poses) different traits of character, different cultures come to life.
that is actually art and that brings me to another point: sart, i would love to buy a set of prints. - how can i do this?
i do think that is kadewe. or maybe i'm wrong, but i agree. she just looks very plain. she wouldn't exactly stand out in a crowd
I disagree with those who say she is bland. She is nothing but bland. Her jewelery has just the right touch to say she's got style but does not need to flash, the baggy pants say "I am sexy but you'll have to guess what's under these pants" and the colors out emphasis on her true colors. A good choice of picture and a good choice of title to go with it. Effortlessly nice, sexy, and stylish.
I agree with Alice Olive. This is a beautiful photo. The light hits her beautifully, and her understated clothing suits the quiet mood of the picture.
Looks like a typical California teenager to me. I guess teenagers tend to dress the same around the world.

i recently attended high school in carpi, italia (near bologna) and most girls dressed in what i call "12 year old boy" clothes. while i am not a fan (considering i am about the size of a really small 12 year old boy) i think she does a good job adding a touch of elegance to the look that brings it up a bit. and no, teenagers in an american mall wear jeans that are too tight, uggs, and tank tops (with their uggs because that makes sense) with their bra straps out
Dear Anon at 7:29, there is only one thing worse than seeing teens in the mall with their butt cracks sticking out and their Uggs and their tanks top and that is (drum roll, please) middle-aged women in the mall with the Uggs, butt cracks, etc.
I agree. I find her a relief. I find most of sart's photos a relief.
Sart, I have an idea: Can you do a "bake-off" with your photos? Take one in Gemany, one in Italy, one in France, Sweden and one in the US, and then ask us to identify what country they were taken in...to me, that would be interesting because, personally, I see much more creativity and elan in the style of your Euro subjects, and I wonder: is it me, or do the Euros outdo (most of) the tall, skinny, hipster kids in NY? Certainly, you seem to have a greater variety in subjects when you travel.
Anyway, just a thought. Love your work, no matter where you are. xoxox, lady
