Crazy Weather New York

I might be wrong but I feel like a lot of the women here in NYC have been shopping for Spring over the last several weeks but the cold temps have been keeping them from breaking out their new purchases which is just killing them!
I have seen only a few young ladies( like the one above) who have successfully layered a Spring-ish dress, over tights and under a wool coat.
The forecast is for another week of this weather in NYC, luckily I'm headed to Milan where Spring has sprung!

Yeah, rub it in! The weather today is apocalyptic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:26 AM) :

you should come to Amsterdam, it feels like august over here.

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (11:28 AM) :

She's done it perfectly. I'm in love with that coat and I want to marry it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:42 AM) :

magnificent boots.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (11:55 AM) :

She looks great with that sping dress under the beautiful coat! Love it!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:01 PM) :

go ahead! rub it in!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:05 PM) :

yes, yes. it's terrible!! all i want is to wear my new spring clothes, but it's COLD.
that said, she is lovely. especially those shoes! where are they from?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:33 PM) :

Hello Mr. Sartorialist!
I just came across your blog yesterday and I would like to thank you for the great surprise and how I am enjoing it.
Your images are really interesting. Even If I wasn´t interested in fashion, which, actually, I´m not, these portraits of people in the street are superbe.
These days in Barcelona is the same with the weather and is really complicated to dress properly in order to feel comfortable. Today, you help me!
Thanks again.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:28 PM) :

It's true! I've been going nuts not being able to wear my patterned summer babydoll dress and shorts and such, so I finally started layering...I simply could not wait any longer!!!

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (1:35 PM) :

I love the clean look on her esp. the dress and wool coat. However, I'm not fan of the Robin Hood shoes. They weighed her down too much.

Enjoy the beautiful Spring weather in Milan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:42 PM) :

anyone know where to get these boots??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:44 PM) :

Nice one: you are definitely onto something here... it's the dilemma of women all over northeastern North America: what to do when it's grey, freezing and possibly "slushing" in mid-April... A smart example of how to bridge the seasons (spring dress, tights, warm-enough coat, not too wintry boots).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

i think girls have been layering out of season dresses all winter

Blogger lucia martinez said ... (1:57 PM) :

you are right. I packed away my winter clothes and got out the sandals during the warm snap, and am getting antsy. this freezing rain business needs to stop, immediately: my shoulders need to feel the sun.

Blogger missx said ... (2:05 PM) :

You are completely right. Although hopefully after all this dreadful rain the weather will get warmer. However, it is an excuse to break out my favorite Marc rain boots...

I love that girl's coat, I've been looking for a shorter wool coat in that exact color for who knows how long... I feel like New York women always wear the most excellent coats.

Blogger Particulars said ... (2:12 PM) :

I love that coat! Very classic. I am itching for the weather to warm up too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

You are SO right- I'm dying to break out all the cute spring stuff I've been buying! But this is not the week :-(

Blogger Lisa said ... (2:23 PM) :

You should come to Sweden, here you go in dresses without tights!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:50 PM) :

OMG, yes I agree I am dying to wear and burst out my spring dresses and skirt... ugh, This weather is depressing...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:57 PM) :

Nice outfit! but not so sure about the boots....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

you are right in this assumption. i have about 7,000 spring outfits planned!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:01 PM) :

Her coat is beautiful. does anyone have a clue where it may be from? Most coats that are stunning in street snapshots tend to be from Balenciaga, I wonder if this is the case here...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:08 PM) :

Oh, Vivienne Westwood pirate boots! They always look great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:27 PM) :

Boots are Vivienne Westwood.

Blogger kiarella said ... (5:33 PM) :

Yesterday in Milan the temperature was 26°C! Bring sandals and shorts!

Blogger 'signorina' said ... (7:08 PM) :

Love the Vivienne Westwood pirate boots. Something about either the angle or the coat and dress lengths foreshortens her legs a little. It's as if she's shortwaisted. I can't make out the perspective - but think she looks great, regardless!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 PM) :

That looks like a Forever 21 dress.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 PM) :

you really hit the nail on the head sart! bring back il sole!

Blogger Emilieee said ... (10:03 PM) :

The wool coat and the dress just perfectly matched. Love the wool coat. But the weather over here is killing hot, so it's rarely for us wearing any trench coat under the hot burning sun.

Blogger Joy Katz said ... (10:25 PM) :

i love this look but i would feel too self-conscious in the boots (even if i liked them). I wonder what the less goofy, yet still interesting, option for footwear would be here? ideas?

Blogger ajane said ... (10:30 PM) :

Genrally I'm all for season-appropriate - in style as much as in food. Floaty fabrics in the cold seem to me like hearty soup in the heat - unappetizing. But even I've had enough of this neverending winter - all hail layering (even as minimal & streamlined as wool coat over spring frock over tights) as the all-purpose style solution to wacky weather!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 PM) :

I have the same H&M dress and can't wait till it gets warmer, this weather is terribly unpredictable!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:58 AM) :

Is anyone else tired of the ersatz military look that's been around for the past year or so? I do love the color on this coat, but enough with the dress-up-and-play-soldier stuff (see also Dior Homme Femme, part deux).

Blogger Last Day Emails said ... (3:06 AM) :

I love her smile! How do you find the girls with the best smiles, Sart? Or does your taking their picture make all girls smile so beautifully?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:25 AM) :

I love the dress and the boots. I'm in love with silk print dresses at the moment. They're perfect for warm weather. In London it was 25 celcius yesterday and its going to be about 23 today. Forget about spring - I'm already digging out my summerwear.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:27 AM) :

Her boots are too cute.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:39 AM) :

ohhh love this look- especially the boots and the layering - she gives off the appearance of effortless style

Blogger ENID P. said ... (10:57 AM) :

She put the outfit together really nice. I am making a mental note to replicate something similar with my wardrobe...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:19 PM) :

Funny thay you should mention it!!! The spring dress I bought a few weeks ago has been tried on so many times since then, but every moning it had to go back to the closet..so sad! Where on earth is the SUN!?

from gloomy Toronto

Blogger groovergreen said ... (8:45 AM) :

I'm going to copy this look tomorrow, as it's starting to get cold here in Australia. But a neat pair of lace-up ankle boots or chunky Mary-Janes would improve it. How can she walk in those Westwood slops?

Blogger Virgin Mary said ... (3:09 PM) :

hate the boots, love the coat.

Do you want to experience some pretty good weather??? You should come to Lisbon, Portugal... It's very hot for this time of the year..like... 25º (celsius of course...)

Blogger jess said ... (8:44 PM) :

we all on the East coast have been dealing with spring tease. My daughters, Abi (7) and Molly (5)...have also been trying to pull off the layered spring slash it's still freezing look. Capris with leg warmers, shorts with knee highs and dresses with jean underneath. At least it's not snowing!

Blogger The Design Bazaar said ... (11:41 PM) :

Love it, love it, love it. Effortless yet totally cool.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 AM) :

Did anyone notice how the neckline of the dress perfectly hits the coats collar indent (is there a proper word for that?)
The colour combination, the shot of grey cardigan, is brilliant. She looks comfortable AND fashionable, how many people can do that!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 AM) :

"et voilà !" as i could say...
A really fantastic style for ethics wear

thanx

they are vivienne westwood pirate boots.

Blogger Amicacarmilla said ... (4:45 PM) :

The Westwood boots - see a similar style by trippen!

Blogger Jazevox said ... (3:09 PM) :

great look, love the coat and top underneat seem to match really well

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:24 AM) :

Similar boots are offered at Te Casan in New York - designed by Zoe Lee. They are great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 AM) :

The boots might be the Vivienne Westwood pirate boots. Sienna Miller was wearing the similar boots. http://modelitoscelebrity.blogspot.com/2008/04/sienna-miller-in-hollywood.html
