My New All-Time Favorite Shot, part 2

I just took this shot today at the tents so I haven't even thought about how to articulate my feeling about this image.

I know one of the first things I think of (in an abstract way) is the movie Funny Face with Astaire & Hepburn.

Stellar. Striking.

I'm always awed by the way others' talents in the fashion realm are so complimented by your talents as a photographer. Compelling.

Blogger Christine said ... (12:21 AM) :

I thought the same thing when I first saw this picture- what a great film!

Is that Bill Cunningham? Who is she? Funny Face with a soupcon of Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:05 AM) :

C'mon Sart, isn't that Bill Cunningham standing next to the swan, his camera in hand, and looking right at your lens! The two of you face to face with that lovely creature in between is too fine; a very, very New York moment.

Blogger positively the same dame said ... (4:05 AM) :

"take the picture! take the picture!" fred's daughter, ava, is a friend. she's also a fan of the sart, but in case she hasn't been checking in lately i'll tell her to be sure to catch this one.

Blogger Anastasia said ... (4:42 AM) :

great shot- is that Plum Sykes?
Love her conservative outfit - her legs go on forever!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:53 AM) :

what lovely shoes

Blogger Éléonore said ... (4:59 AM) :

That's so right: The girl has the same long ballerina neck + She's all in black... Just like in funny face. Your fantastic photo reminds me of Avedon.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 AM) :

my eyes are racing all over this image...his gloves, her shoes, his beanie, her bag, his expression, her expression plus sunglasses..so it's a sunglass expression....again and again you gift us with such wondrous photos...thank you

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 AM) :

What kind of camera do you use?

Blogger Deborah said ... (7:32 AM) :

he looks like Bill Cunningham of the NYT, stocking cap and all. Mr Cunningham, the original blogger.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (9:07 AM) :

She's so elegant and beautiful. Her long neck is accentuated by the cut of her jacket, her hair and the large sunglasses. I love how they are both looking up at you - in the moment. Great shot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:12 AM) :

I thought it was bitter cold in New York-- but she looks perfectly comfortable. She's looking up and out, not huddling with her head down. I agree with MadameShawShank that's there is so much to look at. I even love the couple in the background who look like they're telling secrets.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:51 AM) :

"I know one of the first things I think of (in an abstract way) is the movie Funny Face with Astaire & Hepburn."

I know one of the first things I think of (in a concrete way) is a turtle.

Perhaps a scarf would have made her neck not seem as long?

While the shoes irk me, all is not lost as that bag is wonderful! Look at the clasp!

mltt.

Blogger Athena said ... (10:53 AM) :

I love that movie. I love all AH movies, but still. Wonderful shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

Bill Cunningham, how wonderful. This shot really isn't about the girl at all is it? Just love the underlying story.

Thanks, as always.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 AM) :

Of course that's Bill Cunningham, that's why the shot is interesting. I find her uninteresting b/c it's all too perfect. But The too-perfect too-rich look with B.C. right there makes it a compelling and slightly ironic image. I do love her shoes though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:35 AM) :

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! ( for winning the absolute blog by the way :P )

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:52 AM) :

Great photo, but my thought instantly went to "Who can afford that croc Birkin????!!!!!!"

Blogger ENID P. said ... (12:23 PM) :

I love the shoes and I can look at anything else in this picture but her shoes...

What a neck! And what a face!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:23 PM) :

You are totally right. Lovely picture! Bravo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:29 PM) :

Audrey would have come up to that woman's kneecap.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

Hey lintmag,
Thanks for the brand name: "Birkin Bag" by Hermes

It's actually a "Black Crocodile HERMES Birkin Bag & Palladium" according to an, ahem, popular auction site and it's going for $32,000 USD right now.

Takers?

I'm not into purses and certainly not into the apparent 6-year waiting list that goes with acquiring this Hermes bag. It's a good thing they're so classic/timeless in construction.

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:22 PM) :

wow, I can totally see that.. she has that sort of audrey hepburn glow about her.
Does anybody know what bag she's carrying? It appears to be a Hermes Birkin in patent alligator, but I can't completely tell..but I love it!

Blogger Kate said ... (10:46 AM) :

You're extraordinary, Sartorialist. Thank you for this rather iconic portrait of Bill C. I love your work so much as it is, and then you throw in beautiful, unexpected moments like these. Heaven.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:05 AM) :

so chic! so elegant! reminds me more of Cate Blanchett.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:13 AM) :

That reminds me of an "on-the-town" fashion shoot. Nice work.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:35 AM) :

This is a nice one, I agree..

But please and please Dear Americans:

Could you please try to describe the beautiful or elegant things without using lovely Hepburn´s name? Also in Paris everyone knows that this cult object sells more to Americans.. Everyone loves Hepburn but there are so many other similarities..

I know that your vocabulary can´t be so poor.
But please enough with the same cliché...

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (12:17 PM) :

For The Other Side Of the World

Don't you think I referenced Audrey Hepburn because she starred in Funny Face?

I don't think she looks like Hepburn but the Idea of the beautiful girl and the photographer made me feel Funny Face

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

I actually think she's carrying a croc Kelly. The Birkin has a different, wider shape.
She just looks great. Tall and pulled-together.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:00 PM) :

very classic, very chic
totally timeless

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 PM) :

Thanks, my mother thinks this is a ten year old picture of me and wants to know where the bag is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:03 AM) :

the beauty in this shot, aside from the beauty, is the woman's absolute follow-through in her look. she is lux from head to toe. quite often we only get and give style credit if something is a little off. beau laid is hailed as genius - my eye is trained to enjoy the same - we're all fashion rebels now. that other pic of venetia in her rain slicker peeking out of a very prim coat - this pic is the opposite of that. her croc kelly is not hanging off her arm as a status bag. it's there because it was the most perfect bag to wear with her outfit. looks like she probably had her choice before leaving the house. she is simply studied perfection (not necessarily my style, but everything is right and proper and that is an attractive thing to see. sometimes you need a break from picasso) - her outfit shows off all of her lovely features to their best effect without compromising her air of elegance (no plunging neckline, or extra skin anywhere, but there is her neck and there are her legs). so not only is her ensemble a very polished combination, but it is also in total harmony with her body/features.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:31 PM) :

Yup, Kelly, not Birkin

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (11:15 AM) :

I love her! Indeed all time favorite-she looks timeless. i want to design for her! Who is she? She looks more like Capuchine. Is she Plum Sykes or Marina Rust?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:42 PM) :

just to set the record straight on the bag. it's an Hermes Kelly, 35cm porosus crocodile, (shiny)black, with gold hardware.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 PM) :

yes it´s sort of a sensual pic...strange.. it is as if you´ve catched something more about her than her styles....and the man in the background, so cute in his goosejacket and so far off the fashion girl.... still an amiable couple.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:00 AM) :

Fantastic, elegant, timeless picture. Thank you so much everyone at the Sartorialist. I'm only a teenager, but this site has taught me so much about real style. Your beautiful photography takes me away from the clothing I see on a day to day basis, to much more amazing levels. Thank you again for your wonderful work.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:38 PM) :

Love it!
Thought she was Julia Roberts at first....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:33 PM) :

it's in deed a kelly bag and not a birkin.

the main difference between the two bags is that the kelly only has one handle, while the birkin has got two.

kind regards from belgium

x

Maybe that man thought that you were taking a pic of him? :p

Blogger Mama Bear said ... (9:31 PM) :

what's going on with the pieces draped around her right leg, behind the handbag? First I thought she was carrying a coat or a cape, but maybe it's part of the skirt ? Love this look otherwise

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 PM) :

tilda swinton meets cate blanchett!

Anonymous Saraid said ... (10:30 PM) :

Completely agree with the Funny Face call. Awesome movie. This woman is extraordinarily stylish.

Anonymous jason said ... (7:25 PM) :

i wish you had done just the tiniest bit of cropping: there is a sleeve or maybe the back of someones jacket poking in at the very right. it bothers me but perhaps i'm a little too anal.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 PM) :

Beautiful. I definitely see Audrey Hepburn's elegance in this shot. I can imagine Fred Astaire about to break out into song, watching her from afar.
