Fashionista or Just Another Very Stylish Young Lady
No, not Liv Tyler.
I’ve received a few emails lately saying that I’ve been shooting a lot of “fashionistas” during the shows. That’s true, but I guess I don't see it that way.
Because not all fashionistas are created equal.
Sure, some are high-paid editors, but just as many, if not more, are simply women and men, of all shapes and sizes and income levels, trying to do the best they can with what they can afford to buy. The magazine and retail industry are not known for big paychecks.
I think this young lady is a great example. I saw her at a few shows, but she is not a high-paid editor. No one is giving her a bunch of free clothes, but she has great style and was rightfully proud of her vintage (second-hand) Perry Ellis coat.
Later today I will post another shot of a young editor and how she wore her coat in two very different ways, which has everything to do with creativity and nothing to do with money.
Even the high-paid editors are mixing their camelhair, fur-trimmed coats with nylon windbreakers from American Apparel. That’s big style, not big bucks.
Another thing that I really like about this young lady is that she is obviously very attractive, but is not falling into the bimbo trap that so many young ladies fall into--that is, feeling they have to show skin to be considered sexy.
She reminds me of a young Lauren Hutton or Lauren Bacall. She was actually wearing some very librarian-esque glasses right before I took the photo.

One of the things I love about your pictures is that they're much more about personal style than Fashion. What this young lady is wearing is a timeless look, and I love the punch of color with the yellow shoes.
I don't understand the shoe choice here. Wasn't it a bit nippy to wear those?
She is gorgeous, and I agree with you, Sart, that it's nice to see a young woman not going in the bimbo direction -- so many beautiful young women just seem so.... exposed nowadays (though I must admit that I do find her feet overexposed in those yellow shoes -- to me. Maybe she was going for a contrast, but it doesn't really work for me, especially knowing it was about 30 degrees in NY yesterday.)
-p.
i am curious to see the "young editor" pic you will post later, to compare to this one. i don't want to be jaded but i'm at least skeptical that an editor at a glossy has as much fashion courage as an independent (an editor would have worn socks).
but if there's a fabby editor with an inspired outfit, you'll find her! thank you for that!
I like her demeanor, but I too have to pity her feet in subfreezing weather. The common sense she exudes doesn't extend to them.
'That is big style, not big bucks.'
No, it's big style AND big bucks. :)
i think that we may actually just be seeing a resurgence of fashion as a central aspect of life. fashion has always been an important expression of time, but the past few years it has been a little beige. BUT, i think that people are becoming more educated about fashion, through television and the internet, blogs such as this one. and in doing so, fashion has to react and meet those demands, push itself. i think we're due for some exciting things as the next few seasons unfold.
so are we seeing more fashionistas? perhaps, but maybe we're also just seeing people who are interested in and are learning to dress - well.
Oh, tell me that the specs were yellowish like her shoes and I'll trip!
This is a cute ensemble but as a Canadian, I can't fathom sandals in winter...worn outside!

Her big bucks coat (Lim) could have just as easily been a Cheap Jacks $25 vintage special and her look still would have been great.
The abstract idea of camelhair and nylon is the point. How it is achieved is the fun of it
i have that coat in black/grey and still throw it on now and then!great look but didn't she need a scarf and some boots? i hear it's been freezing in NY!
i hate seeing women go sockless/peep toe shoes in cold weather. boots would have taken this outfit up a notch--the coat is wonderful, and so is her face and her carriage, but those peep toe shoes look too big --her toes don't appear to be peeping-- perhaps they are a favorite with her--and they are bound to get much more attention than anything else she has on here.
i wish she would have kept the glasses on...
that would have been BIG STYLE imo...
refusing to conform and to look cool even in specs...
also..
those shoes are basically ridiculous given the temperature last week...
so i think she actually fails any style test...
more like a victim to style in those...
granted she is very pretty- but she was born like that so credit for that goes to her folks...;-)
Joe W has a good point:
"we're also just seeing people who are interested in and are learning to dress - well"
This lady's style is very personal, and the fact that Sart can capture her persona, makes me believes that she has something interesting in her (even with those shoe)
I appreciate your fond of magazine people, and being a young writer for a magazine, I agree with you that most of the time it's about style more than anything else. My 'high-paid' editor once said, "you can buy the finest item, but you can't buy style"
At first, I thought the coat was too big on her, but if I had that coat, I would want to wear it all the time too. It looks comfortable and it is classic.
I like your "style is more than money" commentary, but you could have saved the tidbit about young bimbos. Most young women are not as silly and desperate as that comment makes them seem.
absolutely stunning.
Sart, you are quite right. I was just teasing you with the 'big style AND big bucks'.
love the site, but I don't actually see the "all shapes and sizes" applied here. Seems that most of the fashion statements are snapped on rather thin women. Do you see buxom women dressing well? It's hard, I know, because clothing is generally made to look good on slim women, but there must be a few in NYC.
When I zoomed in on the picture I see a very colorful bag that makes it even more stylish!
I love, of course, that patent lemon yellow peep toe flat as her accent piece. Viva la difference!
I think this shows that a big component of style is within. She is holding herself beautifully - which makes you notice her.
here in brazil, we'd say: "tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudo", that means something like: that´s aaaaaaaaaaaaaall enough!!!
just perfect. nice shoot, great eye, s.
Eeek. Hello frostbitten toes.
Was it Vogue that had a personal piece on someone rediscovering their love for their vintage Perry Ellis coat - a few months ago?
She does look great - and confident - but I am still hoping that we'll one day return to season appropriate dressing. One thing Carrie Bradshaw will have to answer for on the Day of Judgement...
I agree- yes, it's true that being stylish and fashionable doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money. Especially since fashion is such a youth driven industry, it's easy to find cheap and chic clothing. But it's not the clothing itself that is fashionable- it's the thought that goes behind choosing it, and the care that goes into wearing it.
i always love your anecdotes behind each photo, they mean so much more with your sentiments attached to them.
Lovely yellow peep-toe flats she's got.
I like sexy as much as anyone else, but sometimes subtlety counts for a lot.
I feel a shiver just looking at those yellow shoes.
I think she would have been very sexy looking with librarian glasses ... and maybe some pointy boots.
I think she looks fabulous. Luxurious casual.
I used to rock a vintage 40's, huge long wool coat of my great grandfather's just like this one when I was in high school in the mid-80's and this is the exact look of that era, esp with flats.
Wasn't this breathtaking of course, but hey, I was prescient!
I'm so glad to read your posts about style versus fashion. i agree with many of the commenters, it seems like style and dressing are coming back in vogue rather than label hording. Yes, I occasionally will indulge in a designer or two, but style comes from within, and it doesn't take much money to look beautiful. Bravo Sart!
That's my friend!!
She goes to Columbia University and is so stylish, but always on a budget. She has a great eye. I envy her (in a good way).
i think she's more like young catherine zeta-jones than liv tyler.
