Lapo Elkann in Style of The Times
This shot of Lapo Elkann by Robert Maxwell ran in the Style of The Times section a while back. I finally found it on the internet the other day. I always thought it was one of the best shots of him - I like how everything is a little askew and yet kind of regal.
The white/navy striped pants back to a navy DB blazer is quite....quirky.

love love love lapo! though sart ... i must admit that i often see him wandering around manhattan so it's about time we had a street pic of him! obviously this is a magazine pic but he rlly dresses so well, it always seems like he has put very little effort into it ... this is what you get when you cross a french father & italian mother ... effortless style
Being the grandson of Gianni Agnelli certainly cannot hurt whre style and elegance are concerned. Meanwhile, the Fiat group (which also owns Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari) continues to soar...and with names like those in your pedigree, Dott. Lapo can pull all the stops.
I disagree. This must be the worst Elkann photo ever. He normally looks charismatic and full of energy, and here he looks like a dull schoolboy. Who cares if the clothes are fine if they and his posture don't communicate the right message?

Are the pants just striped, or are they seersucker? (How old is the picture -- before Labor Day?)
Those jacket sleeves are just over the edge of "fashionably short" and into the "too short" range, I think.
I did see a full-lenghth picture
of him wearing this outfit on another occasion. The pant length
was quite short, alomst Thom Browne-like. He wore it with what looked to be Tod's mocassians and no socks.
yeah right you ain't seen nothing yet: that Lapo in the picture is in the classic period, pre-scandal (don't ask): now he's rather grungy. and, what's more, he's about to launch a clothing line, which should be a no-no for a true Gianni Agnelli descendant of choice. ciao fm Milano
I'm with alice. Quirky maybe even wrong but he pulls it off because as the saying goes he wears the clothes they don't wear him.

... Being from milano i am totally aware of the "scandal" - who cares! anyway, i live in N.Y & have seen lapo many times around town & he hasn't been any grungier than he ever was ... this is a magazine photo & for the most part the vast majority of pics out there (of him) are of p.r events for fiat & related brands ... if you ever saw him 'off duty' wandering milano / turino etc... he was nvr in suits, always sneakers jeans etc...

The Fiat Group is made up of far more than the car brands you mentioned ... it includes a soccer team, ski resort, truck manufacturers, cement industry, newspapers / publishing ... oh, & regarding cars ... u missed out Lancia ...
I did miss Lancia. A very prestigious name in Italy, but less known across the Atlantic. Nevertheless, it's a testament to the quality and scope of this blog that it attracts 'petrolheads' who would catch such omissions. Somehow, many of the fans of fine Italian autombolies are also intrested in elegance and style in general. Somehow, I think few SUV aficionados and drivers of Hummers read or are even aware of 'The Sartorialist'. perhaps, the blog might do a feature on Gianni Agnelli one dayor Mastroianni or something on the combination of interest in style and motors in general.
all I know is that he is quirky and elegant (can that be?) and that I have a ginormous crush on him. Though he was involved in that "scandal" he carries himself like a modern gentlemen.
He's a nice looking young man in a generic sense. If he weren't rich and famous and he were dressed like that one would think him a freaking goofball---which he seems to be.
Sleeves are too short.
I love Lapo. Think he always looks great, and this is one of my favorite pictures. I like the younger look (often looks old for his age) and the short hair is much better than his usual long. Not sure how old this is, but again, I think it is great and I like the sleeves.
Since the 'scandal', I believe he has been in NY for a year. Is he still involved as much with FIAT? And anyone know of a proposed name for his line? and what it would be? I love it, maybe more Hydrogen crossovers? And more street pics please.

i don't think it's the jacket sleeve that's short. it's the shirt sleeves that are long/loose cuffs.

Lip service for those two countries where ONLY a very small minority are in deed well dressed. I disagree about assuming that being born in a given geographic location, or culture is intrinsic to style.
The only thing that carries in those general terms the style of a nation is architecture...something that is totally ignored in the states.
self-ironed/ un-ironed shirt - love it. there is nothing as cool as a nice touch of selfneglect.

You're right about the regal thing. It reminds me of the Duke of Windsor for some reason.
I could totally see Hugh Grant rocking this look. It is very English to me. An American man would have to up his gentleman factor to get away with this. I am not saying it's impossible though.

maria ... i totally disagree - i think you could maybe do with spending sometime in france & italy - overall they are more well dressed than their american counterparts .. & i think the proof is right here on this website! over the next few weeks of the shows we'll see ... hopefully sart will include some street pics away from the show grounds ... enabling us to get the 'regular people' in their daily lives ...
