On The Street...Perfect Androgyny, part 2

This look is so perfectly androgynous that I will let it be my mens and women's post this morning.

MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:15 AM) :

i prefer the first pose
love that vest/grey sweater coordination

nice silhouette

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 AM) :

I've never been a big fan of the androgynous look but if one must do it, this dandy has pulled it off quite smashingly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 AM) :

What I am learning ---- When in doubt, wear a big scarf.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:48 AM) :

I think this outfit is still pretty feminine. Take away the broad-shouldered jacket and it looks like something a lot of female New Yorkers would wear. It's mostly in the woman's face and her stance that makes the whole look more manly to me.

Blogger Specialist said ... (9:28 AM) :

my god that look amazingly weird but soooo sexy!

Blogger Laurence John said ... (9:30 AM) :

sometimes there's so little difference between a man and a woman.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

That jacket is covetable. Tee hee...so is he.

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

My opinion? .......Absolutely not!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 AM) :

Like it a lot!!! Classy.

Blogger K A T A R I N A said ... (10:06 AM) :

hi! Love the photos u take, interesting to see the styles and that taste are divided as our behind :-) Take much pics myself but I live in north of sweden in arctic cirkle and no big city life here...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:11 AM) :

Like it a lot!!! Classy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:16 AM) :

i love this look...his face/hair actually really inspire me because i have a high hairline, too, and im always self-conscious about my forehead looking like it needs its own zip code if i dont have bangs or if i pull it back like that, but he pulls it off.

sart, you need to start asking these people where each piece is from because i want to swoop on that jacket he has---i'm only half kidding.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

Martin always looks amazing! Prettiest boy I've ever seen.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 AM) :

What is this???
It's a man or a woman?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

Ah-hem ... sorry but where is the male half part ??? ...

Blogger ML said ... (10:53 AM) :

I love this look. Androgyny is the new black.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (11:00 AM) :

Janvangogh
if you look at this photo and only see a a big scarf then you gotta look a little closer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:03 AM) :

this is a man, right?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:11 AM) :

What a marvelous -- or should I say incroyable -- jacket! So 1794.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 AM) :

Reminds me of the young Brett Anderson (of Suede).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

This person looks more like a guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:23 AM) :

yes, he often looks lovely. am well into androgyny.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:38 AM) :

Beautiful man!

The black states that he is not as ethereal as he might look. Love the boots with the rest of the outfit; the boots help to make all the silhouette proportional.

I love gender ambiguity in fashion,
in my book he is perfect... we have enough rules in all other aspects of life.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

Very Unique and androgynous of course, gorgeous face, and oh my god! this guy should eat a little more....so thin!!! but he has a really cool style...I love new york...Thanks Sart you inspired me everyday!

Blogger Butch said ... (11:47 AM) :

This is wonderful. In looking at him (and it is clearly and beautifully a him), I tried to decide which items blurred the male-female distinction. Was it the boots and big bag, the legging-like pants and blousey, hip-high top, or...?

Of course it's everything, including his fine, fine features, languid, backward-tilted stance, and, and, and. So interesting to deconstruct sexual persona, no?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:53 AM) :

Wow, he looks amazing! I love people who dares to stand out without going bananas with the colors..
Is he a model? He fit perfectly on a mens (and women) catwalk.. :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

Sart, I got news for ya, there ain't nothing "men's" about this!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:18 PM) :

Martin smokes Yves Saint Laurent cigarettes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 PM) :

hhhmmm...
i am failing to see a negative thing here. Looks like a good looking fashion savy New Yorker.
The jacket is stellar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

i'm completely jealous. this is how i would LIKE to dress every day.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:52 PM) :

RE: "is he a model?" He's with DNA.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 PM) :

beautiful

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 PM) :

Um, is this a man or a woman? I think man. But at least one comment above states otherwise.

I like it when you do this. It shows the versatility and uniformity of style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:10 PM) :

to anonymous at 12:18

oh, i love it! that is just the best window into his personality.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

beautiful as art object. . . but in reality, i don't think that being this thin is any nicer for the gentlemen than it is for the ladies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:50 PM) :

i LOVE this one!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:00 PM) :

Hi Sart (hope I can call you that).

Yes, there is much more to this photo than the scarf.

Was thinking out loud. What can I learn from all these photos you post? I would also say wear skinny pants, but there are just some things some people really shouldnt do. :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 PM) :

It's all so perfect, and the icing on the cake is his beautiful YSL Rive Gauche bag.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 PM) :

I love that jacket too. Where is it from, anyone??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:22 PM) :

Gorgeous. Perfection.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:28 PM) :

The bag and the boots spell "girl" to me. Everything else is unisex -- I don't think the clothes or the pose are otherwise very girly. He looks great, there's nothing here I can find fault with.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:28 PM) :

"It's mostly in the woman's face and her stance that makes the whole look more manly to me."

...but it's a man! No, a boy. Wait... a man-boy. Whoa, he is pretty feminine... whoo boy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:02 PM) :

while this person was clearly referencing current trends via the compilation of various stand-out pieces---he also appears to want to look like a womasn... and this was more about gender identity than a love for fashion. i would guess this is the farthest he could go w/o the 'in drag' connontation--- not judging---but this was more than a fashion move

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:32 PM) :

Love the jacket. If I see him, I'm going to snatch it off him. He's so malnourished, he doesn't look like he'd be able to put up much of a fight. : )
Some of the models at the John Varvatos shows this Fall looked just like this; I wonder if he walked in that show...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:42 PM) :

This guy looks amazing, but I'm tired of seeing men carrying women's handbags...It's really getting quite old.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:46 PM) :

I don't know whether this is a man or a woman...I suspect a man because of the legs. Either way it looks pretty great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:47 PM) :

Sexy. Ex looked like him. Hope he hasn't got a drug habit that matches the ex.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:25 PM) :

love martin cohen.
can you believe he's only 17?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:32 PM) :

pretty boy

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:06 PM) :

Dior

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:39 PM) :

martin cohn....dna model

awesome look; it takes guts for a guy to try and pull something like that off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:42 PM) :

Sart,

My favorite quote in recent history: "Be a good animal; trust your instincts." - D.H. Lawrence

Being in the moment, our young fellow can carry off this look for awhile, as he is not yet grown into a fully-mature man.

But what will he do in ten or twenty years, and beyond? I'd love to see...

It's good you captured the moment now. Perfection only lasts for a brief time, like the sun at midday.

Touch of reality,

JCH

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:46 PM) :

Kristin, you say "this was more about gender identity than a love for fashion"

Fashion is not about material aspects only, it is about how an individual presents him or herself to others, gender statements included: surfaces, attitude, and behavior.

The fact that he transgresses existent norms on gender does not happen in a different "realm", it happens in, & thanks to the potential of fashion.

So I would disagree, about excluding fashion from gender identity.

What would Mr Galliano say?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:35 PM) :

Whose boots are these??? Gotta have em.

I agree about it being a more feminine look overall, but the face and hairstyle of this young man is very androgynous. Would be amused by him, I think, if I actually had to have a conversation, though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 PM) :

He has a very individual look ... in the world of modelling (both male & female) it's imperative that you stand out & are remembered ... Casting Directors etc... see a million other guys so fashion is usually the best way to be remembered ... it's the same in London, Paris, Milan, N.Y ... he should go to Paris - he'll make major $$$ there - A bit to editorial for the commercial capital that is N.Y ... Anyways, he looks amazing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 PM) :

The bag is fantatic. Is it really YSL? Bummer. I was hoping I could afford it...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 PM) :

hey he kinda looks like jennifer connolley.

nice boots.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:51 AM) :

Martin is amazing!, and only 17 mind you.

luomo vogue, paris vogue, italian vogue, the list goes on and on...

super chic-boy ^_^

and DEAD serious too.

bisous xxxxx

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:28 AM) :

what do these boys carry in their purses? really now.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:49 AM) :

i simply love this picture, i simply can not stop staring at it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:17 AM) :

I don't like gaunt men :S

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:07 AM) :

"I don't like gaunt men :S" .... In the world of high fashion you somewhat need to be ... In the world of high fashion modelling it's somewhat necessary - male & female

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:19 PM) :

So, apparently he's a NYC model. I thought this site was to feature regular street fashion, not professionals...let GQ and Vogue do that.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (4:52 PM) :

To Anon 4:19
He is a model wearing his own clothes so to me he qualifies.

I didn't even know he was a model when I stopped him - I thought maybe...professional football player or bouncer or bodyguard

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 PM) :

For someone who is only 17, his style is flawless. He is inspiring, which at the end of the day is what it's all about!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:53 AM) :

I saw this boy on the subway once. He reminded me of Johnny Depp, particularly Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands. (I didn't know this but after looking over the comments, it appears he's a model?)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:20 AM) :

To anonymous 10:07- I think it's sad that you think being gaunt is necessary in order to make it in fashion. What's even sadder is the possibility that you could be right.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:38 AM) :

"professional football player or bouncer or bodyguard " hahaha! excellent!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 AM) :

gosh so many comments about how thin he is. it's likely that he's naturally thin and what's he to think if he were to read all these comments? this is about clothing people! it's such a no no to talk about how fat someone is and being told you're too thin can be just as devastating. imagine reading comments about your own sart photo. geesh! anyway great job scott! love this guys look! i'm so inspired and think the bag and hair are killer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 AM) :

To Anon 2:02: Hear, hear! I would love to see BMI standards imposed on Fashion Week etc.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

secco forte è?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:09 PM) :

He is just so beautiful and stylish

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:16 PM) :

the jacket is ann demeuelemeester. i encouraged him to buy it.

we're no longer friends.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:17 PM) :

if you changed the motorcycle boots with hot black high heels - it would change the whole look and make it more feminine. Love the look, he's adorable (and those lips!!!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 PM) :

he looks fantastic and somehow i doubt he would be devastated by being told he was too thin.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:27 AM) :

Im, eh, ah, Im in l-l-love! martin cohen? where can I see more of him?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:47 PM) :

i love the shoes...Which designer??? want them...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:16 PM) :

who is martin?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:23 AM) :

What a beautifully proportioned face, in any gender. Great jacket too. Few people could get away with it with such ease.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 PM) :

It IS a boy, Jenny.

Either way, I think he pulls it off great. I love seeing androgynous looks in the city and we rarely get to see many guys try it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:28 AM) :

His last name is Cohn not Cohen. And he's simply beautiful. Wish he would do more modeling work.

I absolutely adore this outfit, especially the coat. It fits him perfectly!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:44 AM) :

OMG he was HOT :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

i'm in love!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:15 AM) :

wow~
that's all

Blogger fikira said ... (2:28 AM) :

smasching darn good, he stands!

Super vest!

Nice pic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:57 PM) :

How can you not love those boots? I'd probably wear them around the house just because I could.

Blogger Ky said ... (7:59 PM) :

vraiment. he's perfect.

Blogger weslep01 said ... (1:32 PM) :

this looks like something you would see in a prada ad in GQ! love it, and want it

Blogger John Darby said ... (8:21 AM) :

This guy goes to my gym. When he walks in the men's locker room it always causes quite a stir. Everyone thinks a woman just walked in. He is so beautifully unusual.
