this is the same guy that has appeared here with the yellow shorts :)

i do love his hair, and the detailing on the coat is exquisite

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:50 AM) :

Why does this say Great Gatsby to me?

It looks nice.

mltt

Blogger Butch said ... (9:00 AM) :

Love the coat with skewed-check patch-pockets; and his scarf; and the palette.

Most of us cringe in the presence of large pattern; handled with bold intent, as here, all goes very, very well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:05 AM) :

The jacket is a vintage Pendleton, I believe. Very little structure...almost like a woven cardigan. Very nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:18 AM) :

If that isn't vintage Pendleton, it sure is a beautiful knockoff. He looks almost like he stepped right out of a 1930s magazine ad, but they didn't have Starbuck's back then, did they?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 AM) :

Pendleton "Hollywood" vintage jacket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

agreed, it's very Great Gatsby 1920 circa. and i like it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

Is that Edwart Norton?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 AM) :

What a face!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

I like it, but a warmer color scheme would be more flattering to his skintone. Picky, picky....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 AM) :

I love this look! He looks like a dandy out of the 50s!

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (11:31 AM) :

Another photo deserving a little more scrutiny!

Although the jacket is in the vintage 'Hollywood' style, it's been tailored to contemporary taste; very slim body, shorter arms to show a shirt cuff, and it fits his shoulders. Originally, Vintage jackets are always cut much larger in the body and longer in the arm, as was the style.

I think the 'Gatsby' element comes only from his hair, not from the zip-up sweater with collared shirt beneath, or even the scarf, which would never have been tied thus 'in the day'. So he's successfully updated a vintage jacket, hat's off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

I like this look. At first I was like, boring, but then I was like...oooh...sexy. It sneaks up on ya.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:52 PM) :

Nice cuffs! :-)

But no idea what his shoes look like. :-(

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

hooray for hollywood!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:29 PM) :

It rememinds me to that time George went in Seinfeld.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

that choice of coffee cup color: LOVE it!

perfect amount of cuff showing.

Blogger marie said ... (2:40 PM) :

He looks like a skinny lumberjack.

Blogger Last Day Emails said ... (2:56 PM) :

I like how his hair parts to the left, and his scarf tassel swooshes to the right --the diagonal lines balance each other semi-subliminally. Kinda like the clothing equivalent of poems that have really subtle rhyming structures.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:30 PM) :

Yes, vintage Pendleton. I've been wearing them for years. I'm finally in style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:36 PM) :

What a cutie! I think I have that same jacket (yes, Pendleton) in a different color scheme. I love a man in plaid!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:58 PM) :

Brilliant coat

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:59 PM) :

Brilliant coat

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:50 PM) :

Looks like a Pendleton '49er jacket...my gf has tons of vintage ones in the closet. I like his, the colorway is unique, makes me think it's a modern re-issue of the 49er jacket, which arent made of the same itchy wool as the originals, but have the same cut as vintage.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:11 PM) :

I know this guy. He is such a sweetie, and he ALWAYS looks great. I was at his apartment once for a party and it's just as dapper and stylish as he is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 PM) :

that's a vintage pendleton "49er"! I'd love 'em to death but they never made 'em lined. Every time I wear one I become a ball of friction casting death rays of static at everything in the vicinity.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 PM) :

oh, cutie mccute. the way his hair is styled is so lovely!

Blogger superstar said ... (9:47 PM) :

good picture

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 PM) :

i have a burning question - is everyone in New York really so chic or do you really have to look hard to spot these people?

because i can't imagine living in a city full of people who look like they stepped out of a cool magazine?

what bliss.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:07 PM) :

something about this look bothers me....it's just too drab

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 AM) :

Don't like the stubby scarf. To me it says 'too short', not 'dapper'.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:56 AM) :

He's a freelance designer at Ralph Lauren, so maybe that's where the jacket is from... could be RRL brand? He's always dressed in a very Trad way.

Blogger Mrs Smith said ... (1:32 PM) :

I found your website via an article in a local (New Zealand) newspaper. I am so glad to have discovered the Satorialist. I am entirely indifferent to what celebrities are wearing, gossip magazines drive me to despair. However, the fashion you photograph is truly inspiring and beautiful. You are on my 'favourites' list, and I shall be a frequent visitor to your site. Many thanks.

Blogger Anastasia said ... (3:29 PM) :

very polished - he looks really smart and put together.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:45 PM) :

It's not a '49er'jacket. Those were made for women.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:29 PM) :

so cute! I just want to hug him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:27 PM) :

He is adorable. That jacket and the whole look he's put together is just wonderful.

Blogger ontheMARC said ... (6:50 PM) :

he is precious.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:25 PM) :

Dear fashionaddict. I am a Melbournite who was in NYC a few months ago. Couldn't say that people there were any better dressed than any other big city I have been to. I actually preferred women in London, as I think overall they dressed with a little more flair and creativity.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:52 PM) :

I agree with Butch about generally not liking large patterns, but I think this one works because (a) the pattern is subdued, (b) the jacket is tailored to be slender, and (c) the fellow is svelte enough for a slender-tailored jacket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:10 AM) :

ah! I just want to hug him too! This brings back memories of my Paw Paw. Such a handsome fellow.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:52 AM) :

hot stuff!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:32 PM) :

This may be breaking new ground. I don't recall if any featured subject has added to the comments. Seems to be an unwritten rule. Oh well...

First..Scott you're the best.

It is an un-lined Pendleton, bought new at least 10 years ago at Camouflage, still one of the finest mens stores in NY. I did alter it in every imaginable way. Pendleton and Woolrich are thankfully still under the radar.

I am not Edward Norton, but thanks, he would play me in the movie.

Yes, a warmer color scheme would be more flattering, but standing under flourescent lights first thing A.M is rough any way you cut it.

I do subscribe to a late 50's early 60's sensibility, my name's Ward, the name helps to pull off that modified retro/trad look.(No I haven't been to hard on the Beaver).

I am in fact boring at first...and then sexy. Is there any other way?

The cuffs belong to a Thom Browne oxford shirt (with collar buttons undone - very important)the crew-neck pullover sweater, not visible in the picture is Michael Bastian, with the zip-up sweater over that. It's all about layers. The shoes(since you asked)-Etro,pony hush puppies. I love a shoe you can pet. Don't know if they still make 'em. The coffee cup color is key..suits me..no? NOT Starbucks.
The scarf is short and grey as not to compete with the jacket, and I like an extra short if not stubby scarf for more of a bow tie,and for the sole purpose of keeping my neck warm. Not a big fan of long bright festive scarves for men. Wearing a half dozen layers I would keel over with a longer scarf.

Wasn't trying for the skinny lumberjack, that's next weekend.

To 39-3, what a lovely analogy. Wow. "A subtle rhyming structure", are words to live by.

Yes I am a sweetie (more sweetie than precious).

To Positive_Negative: Meet you under the bridge at midnight. The other post, was back in June.

To Fashion Addict and Melbournite: I think one has to know how to differentiate between the people that live and work here and the hoards of tourists wearing their overstuffed parkas,(is that mean?) I personally differ with Anonymous from Melbourne...and let London have their creativity and flair. I love defending this town and it's uniforimity in all its shades of grey and subtleties.

I'm a product designer, presently I consult for RL. I designed for T&Co as well for many years.

Thanks again Scott. Hopefully, one day all your loyal cyber friends can go out for a little drink. I think we'd all get along just fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 PM) :

yes, very nice coat!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 PM) :

very nice coat!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

I can't believe I missed this one. I was just with Ward last night and he was wearing a bright orange cashmere ( of course) scarf so he's not always in such drab colors. He likes his share of primaries. Don't you Ward? One thing is for sure, he's always consistently well dressed, well groomed and well spoken. Fin!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

Before my commute changed I used to see Ward on the subway the occasional morning, and it always brightened my day. Even in this town it's rare to see a man so consistently and beautifully dressed, and so comfortable with his style. Thanks, Ward, for keeping the spirit alive!

Blogger smimmons said ... (6:53 PM) :

How many Polo employees are on here? They all look great, though.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:29 PM) :

Looks like Edward Norton.
