Menswear Article

A while back I posted some photos from a shoot that was to accompany an article in Menswear magazine written by Sandra Nygaard. Last Friday I finally got around to buying a scanner so I won't bore you with the whole article but here is a particularly funny section (ps Sandra I'm not saying what you wrote was boring just the subject - me)

There weren’t many teenagers in Indiana who wore suits to high school in the early 80’s but then again there weren’t many guys as obsessed with men’s wear as Scott Schuman.
The sartorially savvy teenager was so dedicated to fashion that he would regularly visit L.S. Ayres ,the local high-end department store, where he'd pour over the Italian labels with the sort of reverence most guys his age reserved for baseball or the latest album from The Police. Sometimes the kindly salesmen would even bestow him with leftover copies of men's magazines.

One day the fashion gods shone down upon Schuman and by mistake a salesman added a L'Uomo Vogue issue signed by Giorgio Armani to the giveaway pile. When Schuman later returned to the scene of the slip-up, the salesman asked him if he still had that magazine. The teen calmly shrugged and claimed he'd thrown it away.

"It was like finding a piece of gold - there was no way I was going to give that back!" Schuman recalls without a hint of regret. "There was no way that guy was going to appreciate that signature more than me."

Didn't know you were from Indiana-- I am too. Where did you go to high school?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 PM) :

It was brief, but fun. I can see a whole book coming out about this, with a certain Breat Easton Ellis style. It would be fun - rememeber what I said Scott.

That photo of you is great, and you are a scintillating subject!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:29 PM) :

toto, i've got a feeling we're not in indiana anymore...

Scott, I bet we could share stories about being high school males into clothing rather than sports. I was 'queer-baited' incessantly, but grew a thick skin, and wore whatever I liked. I had the luxury of regular visits into the City to check out what people were wearing, and follow my parents around shopping! I sometimes wore suits to school, but as it was the late 70's, I was more into David Bowie's Thin White Duke/Man Who Fell to Earth look.
Great story about the salesmen passing along magazines; I wonder if any of them know what you're up to today?
Congratulations on your successes!

lol. you're my idol, brother.

The following is going to be a bit out of line for the blog but......I love that photo of you Scott!! Woo Hoo!! Hottie Alert!! :)

Yes, I do have that issue. :)

I think I'm in love! I've never seen a picture of you before.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:13 AM) :

Waaouhhh BRAVO!
I thought it was the cover of your book!!!
Félicitation pour cet article!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:31 AM) :

Congratulations about the article. Can we read it onine somewhere as we do not get the specific magazine in Greece?

Blogger Butch said ... (9:47 AM) :

Great photo of you, Scott! Love the very intimate--and also somehow sweet--cozying up to/with the camera...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:58 AM) :

Sart as "ordinary looking?"

I think it's more Sart as looking for the extraordinary.

Besides, it's been mentioned that he looks like Lance Armstrong and it's not the first time we're seeing his pic.

This is one hawt photog ;-)

I'm in love . .

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

I feel the Indiana pain as well. L S Ayres is still the 'high end' store in Lafayette, IN but offers nothing whatsoever worthwhile. Trips to Barneys in Chi are frequent.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (10:34 AM) :

That's very entertaining and easy to visualise! Great shot of you too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 AM) :

You have a face!!! Cute.
Thanks for sharing your secret identity, you fashion super hero!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

I am orginally from Indiana too, loved the story about the magazine. I wonder if you still have it...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:56 PM) :

I WANT TO READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE!

At least, post the link!

Blogger Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

Who's that hottie? ;)

Looking forward to the whole article.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:01 PM) :

Great pic and good excerpt. But now, I want to read the whole thing. Can you post or at least provide a link? Did you provide pics for the article? I agree with Stavros -- I see a book coming out . . .

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:02 PM) :

Oh honey, what a fox! Plus you are into fashion! What a catch....it can't get much better than that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:06 PM) :

you looks killing sexy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:44 PM) :

Great portrait Scott, but what are you wearing?

The article doesn't seem to be up online, but those with access to the InfoTrac database should be able to search for the full text.

Haha, touche.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:04 PM) :

can you show us the full article!?

also, i agree that you should think of working on a book. maybe in a year or two?

also, i think you should make sure to always keep it real--we like you because your personality shines through and you photograph old harlem gents as well as fifth avenue young women.

all i mean is be wary of excessive corporate connections; i think the attraction of your blog is its grassroots feel. we don't feel like you're trying to sell us clothes.

i think that's why people are so much more comfortable providing feedback here as opposed to on style.com

good luck, keep it up!

a faithful reader since 2005

I went to high school in IN and your discription of LSAYERS brings back memories

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:12 PM) :

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but the former copy editor in me can't help but mention that it should be "pore" and not "pour." Just in case Sandra or her editor reads this. Funny anecdote, though. I adore how it begins to create the lovely, linear life story of the successful fashion photographer.

Blogger Melbourne Runway said ... (8:42 PM) :

Congrats Scott.. your talent is a virtue and an inspiration!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 PM) :

Hoosiers unite! I'm currently the teenager in Indianapolis pouring over as much high end goods as I can get. L.S. Ayres is gone now, but I have the internet and a strong belief in the indie designer.

You're such an inspiration to us in small fashion markets.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:33 PM) :

you are hot! : )

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:51 PM) :

Hey, i think i've met thatwriter before at a fashion industry thing. a striking blonde? Sart, ya lucky dog.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 AM) :

Your wife is a lucky woman!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 AM) :

i seem to have bill blass on the brain lately (which is quite pleasant, actually) but wasn't he from indiana too? must be something in the water.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:16 AM) :

scott, you are far too humble, which is nice but I think all of us are more than interested in reading the whole article! :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:08 AM) :

Look at you! Gorgeous.

Blogger atticus_finch said ... (11:28 AM) :

congrats on the write up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:04 PM) :

scott, you handsome devil, looking good!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 PM) :

Why don't you take more pictures of yourself and what you are wearing everyday? You are a hottie baby!
Love to look at your site!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

I'm a huge fan of yours! I didn't know you were from Indiana! I grew up in Carmel and, like the others, the LS Ayers description brought back memories. It's actually gotten a lot better in Carmel/Indy for fashion, though I don't go back very often anymore.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:52 PM) :

Oh my gosh, that is great! You were right for sure!! Hey, if he didn't know he was giving it away..
Well done!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

Lord, you're hot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:04 PM) :

i remember l.s. ayers in downtown cincinnati.

you are too cute, by the way.
