On The Street....The LA Art Dealer, Manhattan

So what do you think?
I like the overall look - the hair, the scarf, the ease of how he wears the suit but I admit the trainers throw me a little.

I like trainers with a suit but maybe the New Balance grey runners or Jack Purcells ( to me, it is always Jack Purcells first).

Hmmm, I kinda like the little bit of orange, but for some reason those shoes look kinda grungy. Are they grungy, or just grey? How about some Stan Smiths? Those are my favorites, on both men & women.

I agree with Sart, the trainers should have been diferent...I love the P Zero Pirelli trainers, I have two pairs and I am going to get another pair for the winter-maybe a boot in leather. They are so stylish and elegant and other brands have started to copy them - like Lacoste.

He's cute and I like the face fur, but the outfit is not so thrilling to me and I don't like how the pants bunch up over the shoes. You've got millions of folks to choose from there - let's see some more innovative ones, Sart!

Agree with you--the idea of trainers with a suit is cool, but these trainers are too casual.

For me another issue is the way the pants fall. They almost look tapered, or like they're tucked into the shoes. (Probably because of the style of shoes not allowing the hem to sit well.) The overall effect shortens his legs.

Maybe he has fabulous shoes at his office and he plans to change. Women do that all the time.

It would be just my luck to run into you and your camera on the one day I looked worthy and had on comfortable walking shoes with my real shoes in my bag.

to me this is very l.a. ESPECIALLY the trainers. it's a mish mash down there but in an interesting way. he cares but not so much that he'll dismiss comfort...the latter is often a californian's first priority (despite what shows like THE OC might do for our reputation).

I think a classic sport shoe or a super tech-y shoe would work, but those Nikes are just too here-nor-there. The lines of the suit aren't cutting it w. the lines of the shoe.

I'm still on the fence over trainers with suits, unless they're something special or the color makes sense with the overall look. This photo is a perfect example; he looks as though he put on the wrong shoes in the morning, but otherwise looks great.

I like EVERYTHING about this, including the sneakers, with their touch of bright color.

But what's most important here is the guy himself: his posture with hands in pockets, his sly smile. That makes the look the look.

The sneakers are the L.A. part.
It's a great outfit - I like the suit and the scarf, and I love his hair - and I think the shoes are fine. This may be silly, but maybe they don't look quite right in the photo because his pant legs aren't falling over them correctly (are they being blown back by the wind?) so it looks a little like they're tucked. Not his fault.

I like it, his combination is humorous and I believe that is exactly what he wants to portray: casual, not taking all the serious to serious, and above all, keeping the cool. Of course for the fashion orthodoxy this is maybe one of those sacrileges to be pointed at. But what else can be done with rules than to either follow them or create your own: specially when you make a life of finding the borders on those rules.

Good question. To me, it seems contrived as opposed to playful. I guess because bright-trainers-with-non-athletic-gear is not a very original choice. Of course non-playful, unoriginal choices can look amazing as well, asthetically (e.g., the ubiquitous but beautiful grey New Balance sneakers). But this trainer look isn't particularly attractive to me, either. No offense but... seems kinda LA-trying-to-be-NY to me.

For me, it's the way the pants fall over the shoes--or don't, actually, because they're all tucked into the tongue and bunching weirdly. I actually like trousers with a 'retro' runner like that, especially in gray and orange, but to me it's very, very important that the pants meet the sneakers properly. Otherwise, it looks like you just stuffed on your sneakers for the commute, and you'll put on your proper shoes when you get to the office (which is not something men do, I guess, but still).

The trainers are alright.

If the outfit had a flash of color the orange in the trainers would be more in keeping with the whole look.

The 'artist' shoes I liked were those paint stained boots the fellow a few weeks ago had on. I love that look of soft leather boots.

I admit I am a big sneaker person. I wore sneakers with my suit to my own wedding.
I think the real key s to coordinate the sneakers with what you are wearing. The gray and orange Pumas with the dark colors just don't work that well

Hmmm Jack Purcells. Do you remember the ad they had for Jack Purcells in the '80s with James Dean with his feet up? It was in black and white. I bought my first pair of Jack Purcells because of that brilliant ad. It was the precursor to the Gap's Kerouac in Khakis ad.

I stumbled across a man in downtown trendy montreal today and I acutally thought omg this shoud be on the sartorialist..embarrsing non? anyways the man was wearing a very similar outfit to this one..and his acessory of choice was a french pointer wearing a ralph lauren silk scarf.

i don't like the shoes with the outfit. they could potentially work if the rest of his outfit wasn't quite so well coordinated i think. i find them distracting in a disturbing way.

This look makes me feel very much at home -- you see a lot of guys in California who clearly have "smart" jobs but also incorporate a little outdoorsiness into their look, with bright color to keep it from being too crunchy... like you might finish all your tasks early and hit the hills for a mild hike without changing (save that daylight!), or go rock-climbing at the gym after work. Pretty sexy.

Sneakers with suits are wrong. It is an awful look. Very inelegant. Bums, slobs, commoners. People who like the look or don't mind it tend to be more fashion forward, not well-dressed. Remember, fashionable does not equal well-dressed.

no way - the classic nikes are the way to go - they are so trashed and scrappy - admitt it scott your a bit polished. the best style is when things work together and yet as seperates are all extremes... tailored...crazy textures.. polished... scrappy...

I like the relaxed and positive attitude. Those sneakers (and also the beard), thought they look quite rough, add individuality and give the outfit a more casual, effortless feel. I quite like it.

I agree Sart. The look is sleek. The glasses and the scarf really bring out his sense of style. But I don't really dig the trainers. Maybe black Chuck Taylors or another "sleeker" tennis shoe?

Jack Purcells are badminton sneakers (after the world champion of badminton who designed them). Chuck Taylors are basketball sneakers,named after the player and sneaker salesman who suggested innovations that made the All-Star the first basketball specific sneaker (I think). Both by Converse, but Jacks are cooler than Chucks (and very early 60s surfer, too).

Jacks would have been very cool with this outfit!

while everybody here is pro-and-conning over the shoes, it's the suit that i like. it's black, it fits right, the pants (despite the shoes maybe bunching them up) are slim and the better for it. i've been looking for a black suit like that for a few years now, without luck. but that's what you get for living in the boonies. maybe i need to get out more. anyway, great shot. thanks for the inspiration. my other fav, of course, is the coolio twin to this guy -- the painter. remember the painter, all?

For me, talking about sneakers, nothing better than vintage sneakers...always come first the original Jordan I (black, white and red), then Jordan V (all black), Converse Top Ten High, All Stars (every colors, even Varvatos slipon blue), Vans (Era or authentic), New Balance 576 almost every color...Sart, I do really not understand this passion for Jack Purcells, there are nice, I agree, but not that much...
I really love your blog, you make think that sometimes a huge passion (like yours) can start to be also a job!!

kiarella: the reason is might be that the sneakers are too sleek, novelty, not retro enough to make a subtle "casual" transition when breaking the formality of the suit. This type of sneakers are to much into the performance style spectrum than in the tradition style spectrum of a sports shoe. The performance style is a very edgy approach to function, therefore the colors, materials and shape. The Jack Purcells are one of the classics on s ports shoes...they were designed thinking on performance, but they have survived thanks to the nostalgia value. In my opinion nostalgia is not good enough to make it work. But hey...I'm not the one wearing either the performance or the classic sports shoes. I have some Prada combat boots, some camper lace oxfords (bowling) , some driving style Pumas, and some chucks.: that I NEVER wear, because they feel to performance to me. Anyhow, every one of these have been designed appealing to performance in different arenas...and that idea of performance (combat boots-with suits....?!) is what makes the combination ok with some, even-though that performance is mostly an idea, not a reality. Here this guy is just taking what he has without that much awareness on sartorial tradition, that is what I think make him spontaneous, and fun.

The texture, fabric and style of the sneakers are too rough to be paired with the the suit. Maybe if he wore more expensive looking sneakers?

It could work better with black jeans; texture of jeans will incorporate the sneakers nicely.

Dude is from LA.

We hardly walk here ( car culture ) so by day 2 in NYC, it can get pretty hard on the feet-

& LA originated the casual , creative lifestyle.

I wear my suits in NYC with Visvim slip-ons or Paul Smith white sneakers.

The kicks (which are Pumas, for the record) are a blend between "done on purpose," "thrown on to leave the house real quick," and "the only pair of shoes he owns currently" all at once.

He pulled it off, if you ask me.

Gotta love how your readers seem to only care for Euros in suits and dresses as if that's the only style that has a right to be expressed.
