honestly, what the heck is that. he looks like clown.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:03 AM) :

capes are doing a wonderful comeback this fall; both for girls & boys...

love it

Blogger JB said ... (11:14 AM) :

Cool jeans and boots, but the jacket.. looks like he´s an extra in a movie about knights. I am sure it´s very trendy but really hard to do right.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:16 AM) :

He looks like something out of a 1910s movie serial like Feuillade's "The Vampires."

Sorta cute.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:29 AM) :

Could easily be a Paris pic on Facehunter.

Blogger Mounir said ... (11:30 AM) :

That's definately what Sart would call "nothing that I would wear, but..." I hope at least ;)

Blogger Just an Observation said ... (11:31 AM) :

Oh Boy ...Oh Boy ...OOH Boy....not sure about this....quite dramatic that's for sure....maybe someone who is in performing arts of some kind...theater perhaps.........
Definitely another validation of NYC ...all walks of life ....I should say it's important to go full circle and you seem to maintain that with your camera eye.

Thanks Sar!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:45 AM) :

very interesting silhouette. a Take on a vintage item/garment is always exciting to see on street fashion by someone who can wear it in confident way. if im correct its a 1930s cloak/cape garment, a semi tailored cloak but with a mandarin collar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

I am sorry, but there is nothing sartorial about this one. He looks like he missed the Halloween parade.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:39 PM) :

Dear Sart -

Many, many thanks from this New Yorker for providing the only readable/viewable replacement for the Times Sunday Styles section. I've decided that the "baby and me" crap that has shown up on their pages for the past two years has ruined my Sunday morning fashion fix for the last time! Thanks to you, I now get a better version of on the street fashion and critical shopper (Space Mercer is great!) on a daily basis. XOXOXOXO

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:40 PM) :

solomon! he looks so grown up with the scruff on his face...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 PM) :

That's rediculous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:15 PM) :

i have been looking for a coat lilke that my whole life.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:26 PM) :

haha right in front of Mary Help. I've gotta say at first I was kind of hesitant but this look is different for a guy...in a good way.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

I know winter is all about dark, gothic-inspired looks for men, but this cape is something else! It takes some serious guts to pull off the insane proportions of this look. Overall it's too gimicky, but I like the (presumably) cheap mondays with combat boots..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:57 PM) :

it's Batman!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

You can't seriously think that guy gets away with wearing that cape? No! I really hope you're kidding.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:14 PM) :

The elves are out early this year.

Blogger marie said ... (2:24 PM) :

Is that a guy?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 PM) :

Although his face is cute with just the hint of a smirk, the rest of the ensemble makes me think 'fly, fly away into the night, bat boy'

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

It's a lot of look, and I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:14 PM) :

hello, Transylvania called. They would like their Muse back.

Beyond that, I'll never be one comfortable at the sight of men in extremely tight jeans.

Blogger Deanna said ... (3:21 PM) :

I don't get it sometimes, sartorialist! i just think this guy looks ridiculous. Sometimes being adventurous with clothes isn't in and of itself attractive!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:24 PM) :

he looks like the twin brother of the buttoned-down charmer in the grey suit -- it can't possibly be the same guy! is it the same guy? no, not possible. is it?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:41 PM) :

WOW! how dramatic yet so cool and urbane - i love it, i think i need to get me some cape action

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:52 PM) :

BATMAN!!!!!!!,but what a very handsome man,so angelic, and no one could have worn the short cape as well as he does, but wouldn't it look great with a pair of great trousers and a wonderful and very colourful scarf?

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (4:21 PM) :

Come on!

I have done so much Sartorial suiting lately that something like this is just a nice contrast and it is a great part of New York style.

Blogger MARIA H said ... (5:22 PM) :

Capes are like the coolest thing right now. Maybe I don't want to wait till they make sense...too late then to be worn, in my opinion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:43 PM) :

It's unique, it looks quite Balenciaga... buy boy does he look stupid!

I suppose we can admire the bravery involved!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:49 PM) :

I can't see why people are so opposed to this look - I think he looks great! It's a cute look, and he's kept everything else pared back so the cape doesn't look clownish or costumey at all... the heavy boots and denim stop it looking too angelic or prim... personally, I love it!

Blogger 'signorina' said ... (6:02 PM) :

I am stunned that no one's quoted "Seinfeld" yet:

"Why a cape? Where do you even BUY a cape?"

To skew "Sixteen Candles" to my own purposes: "A man in a cape is just so...vogue." If nothing else, you got to hand it to him for his sense of flair.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:13 PM) :

it's really incredible to read all the reactions...

everybody except me & a couple other europeans (sarah & alice) hate this pic which is just great. I love ur blog sart,
find it very interesting and u seem pretty open minded
it's good that u show new yorkers and americans other stuff
since you show women who aren't dressed up in a "normal way" why not men?!?

anyway, keep it up!!

Blogger Max said ... (6:43 PM) :

It looks like he's got his hands on his hips. It's probably a lot less dramatic if his arms are down at his sides.

I like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:53 PM) :

I can't help but smile at that. He makes me happy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:04 PM) :

I'm with you Scott,
I think that you've just about run out of Ralph and BG guys to shoot and it's refreshing to see this guy, who still embodies that LES ungentrifed edge, whatever is left of it. I would have been dissapointed if you shot someone who wasn't LES neighborhood specific.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:56 PM) :

to the whole LES comment, im honestly surprised that this guy is from LES. I really dont thikn they take risks when it comes to style but i guess he's the exception.

Blogger Carissa Duhamel said ... (8:12 PM) :

He looks like a classical actor, I love the drama of the cape.

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (9:16 PM) :

CAPE! I too have been looking for the perfect cape for a man; they're either too French police captain or too Sherlock Holmes. I got started thinking about them when a writer friend, Alice Seybold, told me that her father wears a cape which signifies his membership in a Spanish academic society. I've been musing ever since on finding the perfect cape, if nothing else to make her laugh, but I've really grown to like the idea. With the right mix of clothes and neckwear, anyone with thick skin could really make it work.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:32 PM) :

I hope he can run fast...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:09 PM) :

Awesome. Love the jeans too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:11 PM) :

While I'm sure he's got the last laugh (he's warm, y'all), he looks like Sherlock Holmes' intern.

Practical but not all that pretty.

mltt

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 PM) :

I spent like five minutes staring at this photo saying "that REALLY looks like a guy, but why is he wearing all those trendy women's clothes...yeah, it's definitely a guy"

sorry. he looks like he is in H&M drag.

Blogger MARIA H said ... (11:06 PM) :

Ruanas, ponchos, capes, mantels...they are all from the hinterlands...LES hinterlands

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:29 PM) :

oh, for crying out loud...all the americans hate the cape (and are therefore closed-minded, natch) and all of the non-americans like it (and are therefore, i dunno, enlightened)? besides being utterly wrong, that has to be the very epitome of narrow-minded thinking.

Blogger olive said ... (11:34 PM) :

sart-

i love this one. it gives me the courage to wear my shorter cape... sometimes i feel too over the top wearing a cape.

thanks,

kate

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 AM) :

all of you think you are such fashion officianados but you all conform to the exact same standard (a sort of marc jacobs bobo combination) anytime anyone deviates from that look you shoot them down! WHERE IS YOUR CREATIVITY?? so this man tried something new?! He is wearing what he likes and that is true fashion. Have you seen how many designers dress??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 AM) :

i love the composition of this photograph.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:36 AM) :

excellent! kudos to the young man and to the sartorialist.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:59 AM) :

batman!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:18 AM) :

holy shit! that is so cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:26 AM) :

i don't get all of the negative comments! he looks like he's super cozy and warm. i'm jealous. and while it's an unusual look, no doubt (which makes it absolutely refreshing), everything is so streamlined and clean that it doesn't look at all gimmicky. and i love that sart caught him at a point when his hands at at his hips and therefore exaggerating the cape shape for our benefit. all in all, i absolutely LOVE it!

signed,
not a european

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:13 AM) :

It looks like robin. Maybe if he was older with a nice hat and a grey suit it would look more intellectual and sophisticated than Peter Pannish. Otherwise it just looks like he has outgrown his clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:55 AM) :

It's a bit last fall ... last fall dior homme showed many capes - i bought the long dior homme coat like one from saks & a short leather one from browns in london .... they look more like a coat / jacket whereas this is 'A cape' ... he looks good nonetheless, just a bit a/w 05 ...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:05 AM) :

As an Italian living in Asia, can I say from a distance how amusing it is that such a simple thing as a cape [long live Spain!] and a tote bag on a man's shoulder can create such division between all of you fashion police!! The cape is and always will be the pivotal winter piece in Spain. Yes on MEN too.
Open your minds. Its rather fun.........Personally I wouldn't have teamed it with super skinny pants, he does look a little 'forest' bound...but it's cute none the less! Bravo mon ami.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:07 AM) :

Not big on capes, but he has the look of a 17th century Italian painting juxtaposed in 21st century NYC. Kinda like that...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 AM) :

I like the cape. He looks groovy and a little scary, and I'll bet he likes that. Isn't nice we all have different opinions, otherwise we'd all be running around in capes and it would be boring.

Please stop insinuating the non-cape-lovers (or non-leggings-on-a-man-lovers, ahem) are smallminded, unstylish conformists. That's kind of mean.

That said, I'm really glad he isn't wearing leggings with his cape, you know?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:27 AM) :

Dear Positively the Same Dame,

I am not an American.

Although I find this look creative and interesting, I am not a fan of the cape. Maybe longer? Maybe without the arms bent? Perhaps just not paired with the chosen outfit? Maybe just not a cape.

Like many Americans, I am not closed minded, utterly wrong or narrow minded. I am free to make my own choices and express my own opinions.

Being enlightened is about MUCH more than considering yourself to be fashion forward. It is not about "I like this" or "I don't like that", and is definitely above the cultural and political stereotypes you conveyed in your comment.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

He looks like he should be in a painting - maybe French maybe around 1800s.
Clearly he isn't following the masses. I say BRILLIANT!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 AM) :

It's not narrow minded just to say you don't like something!

let's see more capes before we vote them off of the continent.

Sart, please find us more men in capes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

Well, I'm sorry, but I can't stand super skinny pants on guys. It's just wrong when it looks like a guy's got curves.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:20 PM) :

I LOVE this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:23 PM) :

i like his angelic face and hair.
i like the cape, the shoes.
the dark vibe.
i don't feel the skinnies.
i'm not american, and it doesn't matter.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:30 PM) :

perfect french school boy look. reminder of how cosmopolitan nyc really is.

Blogger Sunny Bunny said ... (3:35 PM) :

My problem is not with the cape, actually; I think it's rather chic and I would so wear it if I could find a nice one that doesn't look too costumey. My problem is with the skinny-jeans and the combat boots. Grey is a great colour to gounderneat the cape, but it'd look much better if it were a slack, straight leg jean or pant with lowtop chucks or some slip ons. As it is, it is very HIPSTER DOOFUS, or, as someone else said rather nicely H&M DRAG

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:15 PM) :

to those who misunderstood my meaning, i was responding to the remark made by mn**. i believe that if you go over that post and then my comment you will find that it mirrors your own and not the other way around.

Blogger Rippedbackpocket said ... (5:16 PM) :

Isn't that Paul McCartneys lost son?
He Timewarped and sort of became the hype of the day. Weird. And I'm a bit drunk.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:30 PM) :

When women dress in men's clothes, its androgynous, but when men dress in women's clothes it's considered cross dressing? I don't understand... Anyway I think this guy looks great. I'm so jealous that almost all guys can pull off skinny jeans, but not all girls can.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:13 PM) :

Dear PTSD

You are absolutely right that my comment actually mirrors yours. Sorry I misinterpreted it!

anon 10:27

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:14 PM) :

PS. to some of you...

this cape (and other might i add) is/were designed for...*catch your gasp* A MAN.

so get over it.

not every man, ESPECIALLY IN NEW YORK..is going to walk around in a suit.

got it?

to be quite honest, americans should be thankful, and acknowledge his courage for wearing such a look...

most londoners i know would praise this. the cape does him sooo much justice.

and i bet. (Sart, correct me if im wrong) that he was asked to raise his cape in a "BATMAN/ELF" form, for this photograph.

surely he doesnt skip around town waving this cape like a fictional cartoon.

YOU would be the cartoon to actually think that.

and for women who are "turned off" by this look, dont feel so bad. because if that is your attitude towards avant garde fashion/forward thinking youngsters. than chances are this boy feels the same towards you.

but the best part is I wonder how many of you who truely dislike this cape, could pull it off as well as he has?...

its quick to say something is awful...not so easy to try it, and succeed. like he has.

And for those of you calling this "last season" do you honeslty think hedi slimane invented the cape? oh please...do some research OUTSIDE your vogue homme magazines.

and to those who say he's a bit young to wear this. I wonder what you say about all these women in "grandpa" sweaters? hmmm?

i also love how girls bash skinny denim on boys. only because they dont look quite as wonderful on them.

(...but you dont hear us telling you not to wear them) ^_^

and for the "i hope he knows how to run fast" comment

that seriously made my stomach turn. how ignorant could you be? truely amazing...to even verbally invite the idea of one doing harm to another based on their clothing.

pathetic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:28 PM) :

solomon looking as amazing as always. so glad you've captured him!

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (8:31 PM) :

Alexander
Just to clarify - I didn't ask him to pose that way he just did it, I think he understood that it would better show of the cape.

and just to stat the obvious - I think he looks great, New York needs kids like him. I think he has executed his look just as well the the gentleman in the recent grey plaid Etro suit.

Blogger épigraphe said ... (9:26 PM) :

We love SOLOMON.
How can you hate.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 PM) :

He's cute and fun. I agree that looks like a stage actor. Actors are hilarious. NYC takes all kinds!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:38 AM) :

Bravo for the insouciance, the cheekiness, and the proud flair this boy has. How can one look at him and not see a fully fledged sartorialist?

I never understood why some people are so rigid about fashion ... it just sucks the fun out of the whole enterprise.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 AM) :

I agree, Alexander and Sartorialist.

Although I don't dig the cape look this guy is rockin, I do appreciate the style he has. So many men are kept down from showing any style in this society taht they revert back to dockers and (the most awful) turned-up preppy collar--remember the whole 'metrosexual' backlash?

So support men who take risks. They may not get it right all the time, but at least they're giving you something interesting to look at.

And yeah, there is a double standard for girls and guys.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:34 AM) :

Oh, for once, we're being so ridiculous that no-one mentioned the pigeon-toed stance. Totally refreshing to see here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:59 AM) :

this guy looks absolutely gorgeous! I love the cape and his entire look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:09 AM) :

To Alexander at 8.14pm - Bravissimo!
A very lucid set of comments indeed.
I couldn't agree more.
Just proves how aesthetics can get people so worked up, with just this clever cape look on this boy. He looks great, and special, in his very own way.
Why make fun of that?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:44 PM) :

he looksa like a fashion victim. in ten years he will laugh at himself

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:25 PM) :

Simply put, capes rule. And this guy has the guts/fashion acumen to sport one. Props.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:33 PM) :

Was this taken at that cool flea market, I think it's on a corner? They have the best tee-shirts.

I personally wouldn't do the cape thing, but he seems secure and happy and I'd throw back a few beers with him. I bet he has great stories.

Blogger talulah said ... (10:42 PM) :

that is the stuff i love about new york, so comtemporary and yet classic. he kind of looks like he would have been off to a duel a 100 years ago.
thats how you do new romantic.
this is phenomenal.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

I don´t believe what I´m reading... come on people don´t you see the wonderful originality! Love It!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:36 PM) :

He looks great for a guy or a girl! Love the Robin-androgony.
E. Starbuck

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 PM) :

i totally agree with alexander. and i can't believe the blatant sexism being exhibited by many of the women posting here, being a woman myself! women had to fight to be able to wear trousers - and back when almost nobody was doing it, many others thought it was ridiculous/silly/impractical/etc, similar to many of the comments here. why is it still ok, in this day and age, to criticize guys for looking effeminate?

those of you who have a strong "no" reaction to this picture need to take a moment to step back and understand why you are reacting that way - if it's truly because this guy has no style (as that is what this blog is about, from my understanding) OR if it's because simply given our culture you are not used to seeing a guy in a cape, or a guy wearing pants that you have only seen women wear, and therefore it registers as different and wrong.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:23 AM) :

"in ten years he will laugh at himself"

I think he's able to laugh at himself already, which seems to bvethe point of the cape in the first place.

Bravo to him, I say.

--a fellow cape wearer

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:52 PM) :

I know where he took the idea from! there's a famous portrait looking just the same.. i'll post as soon as i find it out!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:25 AM) :

one my fave!
he looks like a much much younger version of Nikolai Gogol =)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:39 AM) :

Regarding the comments:
- I know this guy as an acquiantance and he has more than enough confidence to pull this off. All the cape-haters are lucky to see this on the internet and not on the streets because it's safe for them to dislike and badmouth it here. There's no room for hating it in real life when the wearer couldn't care less. Disliking this look essentially shows bad taste.
- H&M do not create trends or ideas, they take them from the streets where looks like this happen by guys like this, and they lift them from larger designers, who are also largely looking at the streets.

This is the living breathing reason why outfits/fashion/dressing up is inspiring and cool. We need less cookie-cutters and more of this.

Blogger biglakestyle said ... (5:50 AM) :

Some spirited comments I just read. From this fashion-senior's view; this look is swell. Boys like this move to NYC because it's almost the only American city you can do this is; not even SF. Much of our fashion sense trickles down from our environment. The US has been all about mass production, mass merchandising, mall shopping and the like. Now we are beginning to either re-think this or just travel more. More capes in 2008 !
