If FBM ever wears a cape it will be the end of civilization as we know it. Great pic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:17 AM) :

Looks fabulous with the exception of the scarves hanging out the bottom of jacket...throws the whole thing off imho. Beth

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

I think his jacket looks too tight..looks like he couldn't possibly button the second button. Perhaps he need a larger size if he is going to have several layers. Cuff exposure and shoes are perfect, though.

Blogger Broady said ... (10:35 AM) :

Great look. The jacket is a little tight, however, most likely from the scarves and sweaters underneath.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

I'm with Broady: my first impression was "overstuffed". The combination of snug closed jacket, broad chest, and scarf inside makes it looks like there's just too much fabric there. I bet that jacket fits great with just a shirt under it, but sometimes you need jackets fitted for sweaters.

With a better fit in the jacket, though, excellent (although I'm not sure I really like the scarf inside the jacket).

Wonderful look & great photo. I love the scard and the jacket. It looks to be cordouroy, which is unexpected & so fall.

Blogger Laurent said ... (11:47 AM) :

This gentleman always looks great, even in casual attire... and he's hot. It's an example and inspiration for all of us weight challenged out there.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (11:54 AM) :

I love that scarf, especially against the blue of his shirt and the brown jacket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 PM) :

I swear he looks like Reza Raein, Marjorie Gubelmann Raein's husband.

Blogger OTC said ... (12:33 PM) :

I'm with Pos-Neg, the great thing about FBM is that he does not hide behind his physique, he is what he is and, yes, he's dashing.

Maybe the scarf could have been tied differently, but the great thing about this look is that it seems he really did throw it together and head out. No preening or excessive examination - there he is, out on the street, take it or leave it. We'll take it.

Blogger Max said ... (1:29 PM) :

The sweater inside the jacket is a must for a larger guy. It reinforces the "V" shape created by the jacket lapels and draws the eye away from the waist and toward the face.

Wrapping it around the shoulders would destroy that all-important neckline.

I have to disagree with the people saying the jacket looks overstuffed. It's not wrinkling through the torso or pulling at the button. It's perfect.

Well played.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:43 PM) :

The cut/length of the jacket is OK because the style silhouette he's shooting for is vintage/retro. But I think the fit/style looks better for the slimmer man but it's not really too bad on him. Very opulent and sophisticated look and a perfect shot with the cafe behind him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:54 PM) :

flawless

Blogger Butch said ... (2:11 PM) :

Like it, like it. But the dangling scarf undermines the balance established by the rest, I think...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:44 PM) :

when will we get to see a photo of you, sartorialist?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:08 PM) :

Hell yeah, fat man can look great!
This Gentleman really gives me some hope for myself when I grow older, even if I have hair.

Btw: I always wondered how tall he is. Sartorialist?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:18 PM) :

I love FBM. What a sexy guy. Thanks for another great photo of him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:20 PM) :

love his feet, his glasses, his stance, his attitude, and this picture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:30 PM) :

Isn't he married to Marjorie Gubelmann? Looks exactly like him

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 PM) :

great look

doubt he ever wears flip-flops ,,, or a cape !!!

Blogger 'signorina' said ... (5:02 PM) :

I'm with Alice - that is a great scarf. My hat is off to a man who has the self-confidence to wear such a beautiful and unusual piece.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:04 PM) :

love the browns

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:07 PM) :

How do people feel about scarves falling below the belt when your jacket is buttoned? I always think that looks a little strange, but I guess people don't mind?

Blogger MARIA H said ... (5:27 PM) :

I find a very strong connection between his image and the coffee sign on the left corner.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:29 PM) :

What a charming fellow! And the scarf-inside-the-jacket is very idiosyncratic...and it works on him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:14 PM) :

Speaking of trouser cuffs...

I don't usually wear them, but they look good here.

Anyone have any thoughts on the right height for the cuff itself?

Does 2 inches sound right? There's nothing worse than too narrow a cuff...

Blogger DK said ... (9:43 PM) :

Okay. I can't say whether or not the jacket's a bit tight, but it sure looks that way. His jacket can fit well without being too small. Maybe wearing his correct size, but in a different cut may help? This appears to be the correct cut, however. Don't get me wrong, I would wear every single article of clothing that this young man has on myself. Maybe it's the layers. Maybe tying the scarf in a slip-knot will allow for some breathing room under the jacket.

Cuffs shouldn't be more than an inch and a half.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 AM) :

yay! FBM is back! i missed him.

Blogger Solomon Animashaun said ... (4:05 AM) :

Standard cuff size should be 1.5 inches but I have a propensity to go for 2.5 inches which is also acceptable as long as you can pull it off!

With regards to the FBM.....very stylish guy who has an excellent knack of hiding all his imperfections. The cut of this jacket is a perfect example.....it makes him look slim because of the way it has been cut (the shoulders etc..). To me it suggests that the guy knows exactly how a jacket should look and fit.....or he has a good tailor who does! Definately a worthy 'Sartorialist'

Seriously, this man is everything this excellent Blog by Scott is - for my money - all about. FBM is far from perfect in many ways physically speaking - but By God, he's human. And he turns himself out with a splash of panache every time. In these days of sameness, or whacky out-thereness in fashion - this chap throws together his gear with total style. Everything everyone says here is right - a little less of this, more of that, shorter the former, longer the latter etc etc. But you know what? I wouldn't change a damn thing. FBM enjoys himself getting ready in the morning to face the ups and downs of his day - and he projects some foibles and humanity and quicky stuff along the way... what more can you ask? And hell, he looks like the sort of guy we'd all want to share a Whisky with sometime. I reckon he's owed a virtual round of applause and I nominate him for The Sart's First Annual 'We Love Him'Award!

Blogger Butch said ... (7:59 AM) :

Aother word about cuff depth (hmmmm: say that quickly ten times!)--it depends on one's height.

Rule of thumb: the taller you are, the wider your cuff, though not by a great deal. Cuffs for those under 5' 10" should be about 1 1/2 inches; for those over, an extra quarter inch makes a small but telling difference.

Of course, cuff width also depends on the style of the pant--some sportier, tweedier models do well with a narrower cuff, so one doesn't look like one is packing material at one's ankles. Also, fashion will have its (his? her?) say....

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (10:32 AM) :

It would be perfect if the ends of his scarf did not hang out from his jacket...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:41 AM) :

LOVE the scarf, and he looks warm AND stylish, and oh-so-very Fall in NYC. I must admit, the terms "fat" or "large" or "physically imperfect" or "weight challenged" really didn't occur to me when I saw this pic--he just looks wonderful and vibrant.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:24 PM) :

This site is sometimes too rich to resist letting out a good-natured laugh. Sartorialist, FBM, commentors - I love you all!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:15 PM) :

i really think the scarf is too long

Blogger JA Firebrand said ... (11:50 AM) :
