December GQ - The Sartorialist from London
I just bought the new GQ with my page of photos from London - I love it and love the whole issue. It is the Men of the Year issue so ,of course, I bought the one with Will Ferrell on the cover - sorry Jay-Z.

Thanks for the link...loved the Milan show discussion.....however always find it hard to interpret everything they are talking about in terms of fashions seen on the runway and how we should incorporate them into our dressing style...can't see if anyone would really notice...like the Rapper dude wearing shorts ....Rappers always wear shorts ..particularly the oversized ones like he has on....and shorts are cool for Spring 07 they say.....I know you wont catch me wearing a pair of white Prada mid thigh short with a shirt, tie and a blazer/jacket ....with a hat...sorry sorry not going to happen.
I absolutely loved the suit video ...great fundamental and very essential info for every guy ....I can't help but notice how men just are not aware of style and fashion and often are really not interested in it...However when they try something stylish...yu see an immediate awakening...as if " where have I been all this time" ......"all I need was clothes to make feel and look better."

I'm sorry, but some of the people's clothing you show are quite A)boring or B)ugly. This one is in category A). Maybe something a little more less boring and more interesting.
Why not get the cover with Jay-Z? Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers of our time. This is a feat when he personifies a hip-hop culture that many said wouldn't last. No offense, but Ferrell makes senseless comedy that is made for Wednesday afternoons in Holiday Inns in Minneapolis and you have absolutely nothing else to watch (This is how I saw "Anchorman"). C'mon Sart. I love you, but don't do me like that.

Jay-Z needs more cowbell!
Looks like he found these clothes. jacket sleeves way too short. Shirt sleeves way too short. That being said, he has confidence that shows through the camera and you can't get that from a tailor.
Mmmm. Love the little thing his collar does. His hands. And, again, the picture. The blue of the picture. Another time, another place.
to me, style is what at first looks deceptively simple but upon further inspection reveals clever or witty twists that transform plain, 'boring' clothes into a sartorial delight...
it might be the shape of a collar or placket, the length of a pant, an unexpected choice of colour or accessories, the placement of a seam, the texture of the fabric -oftentimes the best ones are the most stubtle.
the joy is in the details, non?

imho, perhaps if you look a little closer you might find something that interests you, because the photos here are anything but boring.
i find it helps to pull them up bigger ;-)

This shot captures an attitude that comes through like Brando in Guys and Dolls.
A "Dandy" doesn't know when/and where to stop. This man projects it all with very few bold strokes. Every detail has incredible animation. What an amazing photo Scott. If this is "little more less boring" then bring it on.
This is up there with my personal favorites.
This shot is also a great companion to the "Playa" and "Time Warp Madison Ave" from August.
Wow, Sart! He wears that hat *so* well. Between JFK almost singlehandedly killing men's urban hats in 1960, and Jack Abramoff's infamous post-court ridiculous hat, our culture has stripped men of this potent suit accessory. This photo shows what a great hat can do -- here it also totally captures the viewer's eye, and diverts us away from his sleeve-length crisis!
That was a very infomative video and well done. What is scary is I know someone who wears suits that are way too big, circa the 90's! He refuses to change his ways, but I sent him the link to the video anyway.

I could get free copies but I still love the excitement of seeing it on the newsstand and buying it - sorry but I'm just not jaded enough yet
The GQ video is utter rubbish, no offense to you, Sartorialist.
The video is only teaching conformity and boring stuff. It may be good for the beginner, which I'm expecting is its target demographic, but it essentially is showing you how to dress like everyone else. It has some good points, like getting suits the right size for you, but when they say things like "Don't buy a ventless suit" or "Don't wear your pants at your belly button" make me think that they're looking at style through a keyhole. I do believe that your fashion idol, Mr. Cary Grant, wore suits without vents and had his pants up at his belly-button. These "fashionistas" are just too stuck in their own little world of what's "cool" (at the moment).
I remember only a few years ago when all they did was praise the 3-button suit and it's long lines. Sure- just contradict yourselves now. The biggest issue I have with GQ right now is that they focus too much on "fashion" and not enough on "style". Fashion is fleeting, style is forever.

Of course GQ is about fashion - there is nothing wrong with that. "Fashion is fleeting" so? that is what makes it fun.
Actually I think they do a great job with both style and fashion.
They are giving you their educated point of view - guys need that. I trust American GQ to give me their view on "what's "cool" at the moment"
The jacket is too short, everyone who reads this site knows what's wrong with the sleeves, but that hat ... DAMN!!
And, I'm all for GQ giving us the latest fad of the day, I just wish that they would (a) give us more detail about it and (b) give us more on timeless style, too.

both that anon and sart are right about style & fashion in GQ. the video does give excellent advice to young men about buying suits. i most appreciated the parts where the young man is doodling about with the soccer ball in his suit. good suits fit and wear like pajamas. people should expect such comfort; it would help them look good in suits. there were low moments of "scary" dogma, e.g., no ventless suits. my reaction though was different, i.e., time to stock up on ventless suits. if they can be had cheap now, right on. we will wear them again soon.
Does this mean that my wearing double breasted suits puts me at the height of fashion?
Hey I just saw this guy on the street today (in London) - I only recognised him because of his hat! Walking down Tottenham Court Road, wearing a brown corduroy coat and the chapeau. He looked pretty cool, I must say...
