Uhhh, no.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:39 AM) :

So charming - on that Billy Elliott level with those leggings!

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (10:46 AM) :

What a cheeky outfit - like mum going shopping in her curlers. Are those checked leggings? What a character! Sar, you have captured someone, and your pix keep getting better.

Blogger missdannielle said ... (10:49 AM) :

honey *love* the shoes... but the attitude.... darling leave it at home!!

Blogger MARIA H said ... (11:11 AM) :

I love it, specially his attitude.
But for some reason I think that guy works as a butcher... a very cool one.

Blogger Butch said ... (11:15 AM) :

Delightfully epicene....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

Sorry, but that is just wrong. Unless he is a male figure skater coming from practice...I'm missing the appeal of this look. The skinny 80's style pants just don't do it for me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 PM) :

leggings? is that alright? A Man should not wear leggings. He should leave that for his girlfriend. Nice coat by the way.

Blogger Laurent said ... (12:56 PM) :

An interesting look to see on the streets.

Blogger Ana Santiago said ... (1:09 PM) :

That is SO London! Darn I miss that city!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (1:51 PM) :

I agree with Maria. He's a butcher! Or a chef...

(Stripes/checks get so stereotyped!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:56 PM) :

Here's hoping he doesn't come to the States where he might get his skinny lil rear end mocked for seriously wearing that outfit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:23 PM) :

when did looking gay"er" become fashionable...

Blogger Brad said ... (3:51 PM) :

it's a shame that good looking men must waste their talent on leggings.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:56 PM) :

Quelle courage, mon brave! If asked, I am sure he'll say "Just havin' a larf, innit?"

Blogger Claire said ... (3:57 PM) :

sartorialist, i think you should start a feature where you post one joke photo a week and your readers have to guess which you posted in jest.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 PM) :

yoga teacher? ballet dancer? butcher? whatever ... it really is SO London, as Ana said...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:42 PM) :

This outfit is soo wonderfully gay.. I wish I could pull this off. Haha.. soo kistchy, so tongue in cheek.. so cool! Bravo!

Blogger Carlene said ... (6:09 PM) :

I usually try to make only positive comments, but this...I liked leggings up to this point, I really did, I even have 3 pair. Now I'm not so sure. Whereas many of your photos inspire, this just inspires (in me) a leggings backlash. I pray you caught him leaving a rehearsal for the revival of A Chorus Line.

And that he's wearing a dance belt.

And that he leaves the coat on.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:18 PM) :

"a man should not wear leggings".... "when did looking gay"er" become fashionable"....

my question is, when did we get to be so restrictive about what constitutes good style? i find the first comment disappointing, as this is a style blog that's most interesting when we see unexpected things that people are able to pull off successfully; i find the second comment absolutely disturbing because it's homophobic! there's really not much more to say on that, is there?

i do love this outfit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:46 PM) :

Is that a dude?

Blogger LovaGirl said ... (7:01 PM) :

somwhow the leggings dont look as good on guys!

Blogger Fnarf said ... (7:20 PM) :

Leggings: no. Not for guys, not for girls, not under shorts or a shirt or a skirt or a dress or another pair of pants or anything. Ugh. Unless you're a ballet dancer on the way home from practice.

Blogger blix said ... (7:31 PM) :

to his right the sign says "caterpil…"

to his left a pillar--a lamppost--completes the word.

a visual poem certainly.

he is both more and less than his outfit lets on. diane arbus said that a photograph is a mystery about a mystery.

those shoes. there's a kind of delicate air about him, the cigarette.

Blogger Jason Hahn said ... (7:37 PM) :

OK, it must be cause I'm from the sticks, but I don't get this look at all. Well, to be more accurate, I'm not sure I know what it's doing on this blog in the first place. We want more sunny Mademoiselle Alt shots!

Blogger 'signorina' said ... (7:44 PM) :

Oooooh, noooooo. This one's just a little to sure of himself to approach cute - or better, quirky.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:54 PM) :

agreed. very london, and might i add, very soho...both london & nyc ^_^

well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:56 PM) :

sart,
i love how you capture a personality through a photograph. his attitude is charming....i want to see how many guys could pull this off.

Blogger RKFHJ RJjjjk said ... (8:16 PM) :

This is hilarious.

Blogger ZOE ALEXANDER FISHER said ... (9:55 PM) :

I think he may be the only one who can pull it off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 AM) :

Oh my...if my boyfriend wore this...I'd...nevermind.

It's fun though, I must say. I mean, if everyone wore the same style or kind of outfit, it's definitely gonna get boring. This guy's just breaking the mold of what the fashion industry considers hot. He's just being naughty, I think...and he probably doesn't really care.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:46 AM) :

well...my opinion has nothing to do with him looking gay, though he does, or looking cocky, though he does...it is just an awful outfit. it is not 'fashion-forward', it is not 'up-and-coming' and if it IS, then what direction are we heading in? Its one thing to put a girl in a suit jacket with a tie, its another thing completely to put a man in ballet tights and call him brilliant.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

Oh Sart,
how I love your stuff. Blix you gave me a luverly laugh :-)

First of many posts although I've been lurking for weeks. Keep up the great work, Sart.

mltt

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (9:59 AM) :

although I would never wear this or have my bf wear it, he looks charming in a weird way... typical of Soho though.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (10:04 AM) :

For Anon 9:46 am
I don't remember calling him "brilliant" I do think he exudes a great personal style which is what I really respect. I also love the fact that the post right above him is a guy at the opposite end of the menswear - very traditional and yet very hip.

I think one style can only be interesting if there are otherstyles to contrast against it. That makes life fun.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:04 AM) :

i'm sure he's dressed more stylish than all those who post negative comments. It's a shame so many people aren't open minded & immediately shoot down those who are 'different'. It's disgraceful actually. i'm so glad i live in a city where individuality is cherished - not ridiculed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:28 AM) :

Good style sometimes is how little no-nos suddenly turn into a YES!!!

Blogger Zaydoun said ... (4:39 PM) :

Love the trench... hate the leggings

Blogger Lady Apple said ... (5:29 PM) :

awful...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:39 AM) :

He looks English medieval (except for the sneakers and cigarette). Great stance and great personality. Interesting to see how this photo and the posts about it start to reveal the edge of social acceptability. Is that what Fashion deals with? Or is it more interested in conformity? Maybe it's just a point of tension between the two.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:49 PM) :

It's a YES to me , he looks fun and interesting , If i saw him at a party i would try to make conversation with him , much more than with the very elegant gentleman in the post above him.

Pata.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 PM) :

I love the attitude. That's more important to me than anything else, leggings or no leggings (what's wrong with leggings? Just because a lot of people don't look good in them it doesn't mean it doesn't look good for other people who do.).

He is probably a lot more interesting than those with the negative comments combined.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:27 PM) :

I think some younger guys can actually pull off leggings--but not like this.
Black, where they look almost like skinny jeans would be the only possible way, and they'd have to have a very androgynous look.

Blogger *Itkupilli* said ... (2:52 PM) :

too cute to be true

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:33 PM) :

NO

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:31 AM) :

the bag is a shopping bag you get at a big German drugstore. it has a goethe-quote on it, though i don't remember what it says.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:41 AM) :

tzskthe may look fashionable...

but the leggings dont look good on guys!

sorry dude
