New November GQ

I shot the Miller Brothers of Barker Black shoes for the November GQ. Both brothers have great style and often (very often) wear vintage in a way that looks completely modern. In the November issue Derrick gives a few tips on how to shop for vintage clothing.

Very handsome! And, though the approaches differ, both complement one another perfectly. Note the short trouser length, which in itself (has anyone mentioned this previously?) harks back to early twentieth-century mens' style.....

They're brothers? How sweet.

The leftie looks a bit "Nutty Professor" what with the glasses 'n tucked tie. Nice nonetheless.

The rightie looks polished and the socks are the quirky kicker.

Being who they are it makes sense that their shoes are so divine.

Sart, do tell me that Montreal is on your list of places to visit sometime in the future.

I love the combination of green socks and brown shoes but the tie ruins that for me - it should have been something in green equally vibrant as the shocks maybe or more muted even.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

Butch is correct. Early 20th century norm is that you should not have a break in your trouser's cuff.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:36 AM) :

It's the rise of Derrick's pants that are fantastic to me. Not too many young folks are rocking a cut like that with such success.
The Miller bros hold it down in a timeless way that's unmatched in NYC.

Both men are very elegant. Fashion forward, but classic at the same time. I hope the trend spreads.

Blogger Just an Observation said ... (11:57 AM) :

This is my kinda dressing ...especially the look on the right. ......howver I am personally afraid to wear these "short no break" pants ....given I am over 6 feet I feel like I would look like a clown walking around.
Anyhow great colors ....and again love it since everything does not have to match.
thx Sar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

Please, someone tell me why his tie is tucked into his "pants"?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:27 PM) :

Re: Trouser length. Right now it seems to be all about high waists and no breaks. The piece in today's Times about Thom Browne is a good reference point for this style.

You mean floods are in style? Cool! I mean, is that cool for real? Weird.

Each post feeds my addiction to your blog. Pleated trousers can be tricky and the gentleman on the left works them very well.
On a side note, your blog was motivation for starting a blog of my own (different art: illustration, not fashion). I wish you continued success!

Look, Ma, no belts! I assume they're wearing "Daks tops" since I see neither evidence of braces nor their bare knees. The result is a very clean line at the waist, sans belt loops. Notice the proper, forward pleats (left) and the wide turn-ups (right). Very sharp! Bravo!

Congrats, Mr. Sarto. I wish you continued success.

Cheers,
Publius

The shorter trouser length is very chic. But, not sure of the lime sock. It's not yellow, not lime, some shade in between. I read on V.K. Nagrani's web site colour is the new black.

Blogger Dulwich_News said ... (4:51 PM) :

Very Classic so approperate for any period in time. Also love the old wall it looks like the one in Little Italy that has been threating to fall over for years.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:24 PM) :

DERRICK MILLER IS AWESOME

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 PM) :

Somehow high-waisted pants with pleats don't look the slightest big Grandpa on them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:55 PM) :

Derrick looks pretty sharp, and obviously is wearing great shoes, but his brother looks a mess! A navy blazer with charcoal slacks is bloody awful, topped off by hideous lime-green socks. Suede loafers are shocking too.

Dude! the November Issue isn't out yet! I'm still on the Josh Hartnett cover.

Blogger marie said ... (6:43 PM) :

I like the hint of sock!

Re: short trouser style - Thom Browne was featured in today's Thursday Styles. How apropos!

I love the green socks on the man on the right! Its very cute.

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (10:38 PM) :

There are many ways to rock vintage; Thom Brown has inspired a few 60's 3-button suit purchases, as let's face it not many of us will shell out $3500 for one of his! Clearly these gents think so too, as they've got the 'it' suit look on their own terms. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the PeeWee/mod thing, though...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 PM) :

pertinent article in today's ny times about thom browne.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 AM) :

I dropped into their store in NOLITA with my daughter and her friend. These guys are total gentleman, stylish and charming. I wish them great success with their "under the radar" detailed line of shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

The apartment of the one Miller brother and his wife was featured in the October issue of Domino. Great use of a small space.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:02 PM) :

Well done with the lime green socks and the suede slip-ons!!!!

Who can say the art of conversation is dead when man can still make a point with the colour of his socks?

Now decorated,brightly-coloured and argyle socks are worn once again with sombre suits,as a statement of individuality-a statement as loud as the wearer dares!

i can't believe the comments i'm reading about green socks and trousers with no break. what is wrong with you people? who says you have to follow rules that socks have to be the same color as your trouser? this makes dressing up boring when one has to follow rules. the ones who break the rules are always the most creative and stylist. all my trousers have no break and you can always see the color of my socks (mostly bright arqyle). i have one word for those of you who detest trousers with no break and green socks "agnelli" as in gianni.

Socks can again be seen!!!!!!

As long as they are not white!!

there was an article about the man on the left and his fiance/wife and their apartment--it was featured in Domino (either Sept or Oct issues '06).

Blogger biglakestyle said ... (6:19 AM) :

The "new" fit is fun cuz it's new; it'll be gone and back again. I am not sure if that is evolution or intelligent design. As to the tie tucked into the pants, it 1) caught your attention as it did mine and 2) is way too obvious for a guy of his(fashion) stature; sorta saying "I really spent lots of time getting dressed but tucked the tie in to prove I am not totally about my clothing". Or maybe it's a new style concept like the new fit; time will tell. And we should enjoy ourselves watching.

Anonymous Victor said ... (6:40 PM) :

Please!

That shoes with that suit (both of them). They're worth a fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:56 AM) :

I'm sorry, I appreciate all the supposed subtle choices from the socks to the tucked in tie that the next viewer does. However, I can not get over how much better the man on the left's outfit would be without the pleat. I despise pleats! they make any man look baggy and aloof. Slim tailored coat, slim tailored non-pleated trouser. period.
