At Martin Margiela

I have not liked full pleated pants in quite a while but he does a good job with them here - I think the slimness on top really helps

I love this look!

Blogger in defense of retail therapy said ... (5:45 AM) :

d'accord. very relaxed. volume takes a certain nonchalant attitude to wear well. he has that in spades by the look of this picture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 AM) :

oh wow! The pants give him a kind of 20's-30's casual playboy kind of feeling... I love that!

Blogger klara. said ... (7:03 AM) :

me too.

Blogger Laurence John said ... (8:07 AM) :

there're too low-waisted as most modern trousers are.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:38 AM) :

Been there, done that. Show me originality.

Blogger Butch said ... (8:56 AM) :

Yeah, the slimness on top DOES help--so does the relatively long torso...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:01 AM) :

I like he's look, it's rough looking at the bottom but it comes together. I'm not exactly fond of the shoes though.

Blogger Rafe Totengco said ... (9:38 AM) :

I must say I'm ready for pleated trousers but they must be cut narrow at the top and like this guy, you have to play with proportions and wear something skinny on top.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

good lord, yes it's ALL about the super-slim top part balancing the romantic bottom part....he looks incredible. natural chic at it's best.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

Nice shapes, but cute guy, please lose the cigarette. For fashion's sake and your friends'. And the readers of the Sartorialist. :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

I've definitely been wearing this outfit since H&M dropped their 'relaxed' grey wool pants last spring! I prefer a white shirt, however.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

He's dressed like Marc Jacobs. Very cool. And comfortable. I love it.

Blogger Rex said ... (11:55 AM) :

Really nice look. He made pleated pants look cool. I want a pair now.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 PM) :

Yeah, the slimness on top, and the unkempt imperfection of the whole outfit and the guy in it. If he were too polished and well-groomed, it would look wrong.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 PM) :

he reminds me of brad pitt in Snatch with his posture and attitude, and the slimness.

Blogger Closet Cupcake said ... (12:27 PM) :

not to mention that hes kinda hot...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 PM) :

This guy´s sense of style and interset in fashion is extremely hot! Because it isn´t "in your face" fashion, but "I just happen to be this good" fashion

For those of us on personal missions to eradicate pleated trousers from the face of the Earth, I'll let this misplaced sense of fashion irony by the gentlemen in the photograph slide by without offering too much derision. Nevertheless, the only thing missing here is a vertical stripe shirt worn untucked and some square toe black shoes with really thick soles. If you're going to "do" irony, you might as well dance right over the precipice.

Blogger Resplendato said ... (12:59 PM) :

For me pleated pants for men reached their apex with Marithe and Francois Girbaud..I've always loved them...triple pleats! But then I am tall. Now they are a fashion faux pas!

Blogger abovo99 said ... (1:34 PM) :

What a great pose!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:42 PM) :

mmm perfect

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:36 PM) :

Uncanny - I'm wearing Margiela right now - AND the female version of this outfit!

And you're absolutely right - the pleats only work if the top is relatively form-fitting - I have on a tight vest over a flouncy top with a huge collar bow.

I think he looks wonderful. Then again, I'm biased.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:37 PM) :

that's how I like my men.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:52 PM) :

i love the full pants am so over skinny jeans - agree the more fitted top helps also the fact that the volume continues all the way down and the leg dosent taper in towards the hem like aweful pleat front pants of yore.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:19 PM) :

i'm going with john on this one.

Blogger Rebecca said ... (7:30 PM) :

It's inevitable and he does it well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:44 PM) :

the connection b/w the eyes, even half-veiled, and the camera creates or reflects the substance of the man, dependent upon the viewer's sense; an impression of the clothing and details then follows

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:41 PM) :

ilove the pleated pants. it reminds me of old school hiphop meeet marc jaconbs( who i think pulled from that for his latest mens coollections) its very fresh.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 PM) :

oooh. I like him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:54 AM) :

Re: John.

I disagree that this boy's look has anything to do with irony. The idea of irony as irony is a bit last year, no? I'm just a little (a lot) tired of this postmodern whine re. fashion. Do whatever the hell you want to do; if you look good, you look good.

Fact is - if you don't have hips, or an ass to speak of... pleats work.

The whole too-cool-for-school / fat-girl-with-no-date-for-prom routine is passe.

Homeboy's at a Martin Margiela show; I doubt he's losing sleep over whether or not you love his pleats... Plus he's hot .

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 AM) :

I hate pleated pants, but he's obviously creating a "look" here. Reminds me a lot of 1940s films--probably because the top part is slim-fitting. Love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:28 AM) :

He works in Raf Simons studio in Antwerp. He's called David and he is truly beautiful

Blogger la femme said ... (11:11 AM) :

Oh, what a great shot! I don't particularly like this style of pant, but he pulls it off well.

Or maybe it's just the casual pose...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:08 PM) :

Question from a lowly non-fashionisto - what do you do if flat-front pants just don't fit right? I'm from a long line of short, stocky guys and a big lower body is part of the package; for perspective, my younger brother was an All American lacross player, 5' 6" and ~ 175 lbs (with like 8% body fat). Skinny just isn't an option in the family... I'm not quite in that good shape =) but the proportions are similar - big but short legs (28" inseam), big shoulders, big but short arms...

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (1:34 PM) :

I like his style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:41 PM) :

Oh, those French boys . . . This picture reminds me so much of those tobacco-flavored kisses from long ago. Plus ca change . . .

Blogger Laurence John said ... (6:34 AM) :

miss dish "Fact is - if you don't have hips, or an ass to speak of... pleats work."

i disagree. i think flat front skinny trousers work better on skinny no-arsed men. having said that, pleated trousers can work on any shape. the reason pleated trousers have fallen from favour is because in the 80s they became the generic naff dad's trouser. this is sad because you only have to look at images from the 20s to the 50s (when pleated trousers were worn at the correct height...the natural waist) to see how great they look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 AM) :

balenciaga pants...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

Only a slender man can pull off that look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:54 AM) :

Fashion is cycical. I've been ready for big pleated pants even before Raf Simons did his Fall'06 tour de force with them, and was disappointed that more stores didn't buy the collection because it was so hard to find. A saleman at 10 Corso Cuomo snorted under his breath questioning why anyone would want them, yet look at all the fashion magazines now and you'll know that they're well on their way to becoming mainstream chic again. Just tells me that early adopters should pave the way and be armed with an "I told you so" for later. To say they are out forever is to ignore the nature of fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:37 AM) :

Love that look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:18 PM) :

Quick rewriting: trousers are just Filipa K (not Balenciaga) and even though I wish I did, I don't work for Raf Simons...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 PM) :

It's an ok look, but think he would much better with a bath and a shave.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:30 PM) :

I feel necessary to precise that this boy is usually much more beautiful and radiant than on this picture. And that this last "bath and shave" remark was more than pointless.

[Et, Monsieur, c'était "Sartorialist" avec un "r", eh oui... hi hi hi]

Blogger Jordane said ... (7:08 AM) :

hey I know this guy ! how fun it is to see it on this website ..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:59 PM) :

any idea what shoes he is wearing?

Blogger aliceinprogress said ... (7:18 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 AM) :
