At Dior

UPDATE - He is not French but Spanish

I love his combo of red check shirt and pale gold tie. This is a combo I would not have thought of - I guess some French (strike that - Spanish) guys are very sartorial ( oh, I know I didn't just type that!)

he's jaime de marichalar, the husband of infanta helena, from spain

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:32 AM) :

That's the Duke of Lugo, yes ? See him in London quite often and he is always very stylish.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:32 AM) :

No es francés. Es español, uno de los yernos del Rey Juan Carlos I. Es Jaime de Marichalar, famoso en España por sus looks. Es un sibarita de la moda con cierto aire de dandy.
He's from Spain. His name is Jaime de Marichalar (son-in-law of Juan Carlos I, king of Spain). Very famous here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:55 AM) :

Es el Duque de Lugo de la familia real española

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:01 AM) :

He's a Spaniard, and a very sartorial one: Don Jaime de Marichalar, son-in-law of King Juan Carlos and husband of the Infanta Elena. He suffered a stroke in 2001, but is doing very well. I can't believe I know this stuff. Love your blog!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:03 AM) :

Is this Marichalar? the Infanta's husband in Spain?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:28 AM) :

Haha, ce n'est pas un français, mais un espagnol. C'est le mari d'une des filles de Juan Carlos!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:38 AM) :

¡Jaime de Marichalar! He's married with Elena de Borbón, Princess of Spain...

Blogger elena said ... (6:42 AM) :

He is not French, he is Spanish. His name is Jaime de Marichalar, Duque de Lugo, and he is married with the Infanta Elena de Borbón, King of Spain´s daughter.

I think he is in Dior brand, I´m not sure, maybe in Loewe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:45 AM) :

That´s Alvaro de Marichalar, member of the spanish royal family. He's married to Juan Carlos first daugther and always recieve many compliments about the way he dresses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 AM) :

Royal style is just different... This crazy fashion men is married to one of Spain's Princesses... Amazing

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:30 AM) :

this guy isn´t french..he is spanish, and by the way, husband of S.A.R.Elene de Borbon, princess here in Spain...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:42 AM) :

Jaime de Marichalar is not French, is Spanish, the husband of the eldest daughter of the King of Spain. Here, in Spain he is very famous because his outfit is very very fashioned, sometimes too fashioned for a royal...Many people says he's ridiculous.

Blogger Tok said ... (7:46 AM) :

He is elena's husband, one of the daugther of the Spanis King.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 AM) :

Is it just me or is this just cliched?
(maybe it's just the face and hair)
I feel if you knew him, one day you'd find yourself saying, 'why don't you just wear something simple for once and relax?'

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:01 AM) :

This guy is Spanish actually-married to one of the Infantas.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:02 AM) :

Guy is Spanish actually, married to one of the Infantas.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:06 AM) :

He's Jaime de Marichalar, Princess Elena of Spain's husband. Wellknown in Spain for his excentric taste in clothes.

Blogger Eva said ... (8:13 AM) :

Jaime de Marichalar...divino!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:39 AM) :

I think this guy is spanish and married to a princess (daughter of the actual King of Spain) his name is Jaime de Marichalar. He has a quite handsome and kinda old-schoolimage.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 AM) :

Jaime de Marichalar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:52 AM) :

That's Jaime Marichalar, Princess Helena of Spain's husband... and spanish as can be, sartorially speaking.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:09 AM) :

I'm not sure, but I think he is a Spanish monarchy member. It is known that he is a fashion enthusiast.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:21 AM) :

He is actually spanish! The husband of Princess Elena of Spain, Jaime de Marichalar.

Blogger Butch said ... (9:24 AM) :

Also good: the narrow tie with long knot and small, spread collar... all right for his face-shape....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:28 AM) :

great shirt , but the collar style tells me he's a Brit

Blogger kurt said ... (9:34 AM) :

Jaime de Marichalar is always cooler than cool, but here, in Spain he's most of the times missunderstood. He's a real 21st century dandy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 AM) :

Hi Scott, good pic!
this guy is Spanish, his name is Jaime de Marichalar, he's married to the Princess Elena of Spain.

He's famous in Spain for his very sartorial choices.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 AM) :

Just to say he is not french, but spanish. And he is married to the King of Spain oldest daughter!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 AM) :

Hope Im not wrong, but I think he is Spanish. He is the husband or ex-husband of Infanta Elena of Spain.
Sorry if Im wrong...

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (9:42 AM) :

Very typical french style. I do not like the folding of the pocket 'chief though

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

This is Jaime de Marichalar, husband of infanta Elena, the oldest daughter of the King of Spain.

Blogger Jonathon Morgan said ... (10:34 AM) :

I love the patterns of the shirt/tie offset by the solid jacket and AWESOME hanky in the pocket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

He is not French. He is Jaime de Marichalar, Duke of Lugo, husband of the Spanish Infanta Elena.

He is very famous in Spain because of his obsession with clothes. He convinced his wife to switch from horrible desingers to Lacroix, Manolo Blahnik and Valentino. His trademarks are tshirts from Abercrombie, pashminas, fur scarves, fans and his mixes with ties and shirts. I hate him, I want his money and some of his clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 AM) :

whoa! a Frenchman it's not - you've just stumbled upon Don Jaime de Marichalar, Spanish dandy-in-residence and son-in-law to King Juan Carlos. he can usually be seen shopping at Etro or attending glamorous events in Madrid. Great instinct for bold stripes, unusual colors, devilish details. Good choice!

cheers from Pier, Milan, Italy

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

Indeed great combo and mix and pattern, but he does not look French, he should be Latin, "sartorially" speaking.

Blogger Nia said ... (11:08 AM) :

Just came from style.com and I love the Dior shots--all that black and white with very smooth lighting. Gorgeous. Who is the girl in the 3rd to last picture, with the short black dress, red purse, and all that blonde hair?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 PM) :

Uh ... so what you're all telling me is this guy is Spanish, not French? Does anybody read the comments before posting their own?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 PM) :

Spaniards are generally very stylish!

Blogger NATRIBU said ... (1:26 PM) :

Ey! Jaime de Marichalar!
Enhorabuena por tu blog!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:35 PM) :

Wow, your readers sure do know European royalty! I am so out of it, all I do is drive carpool and drool over your very interesting life.

Thanks for entertaining this volleyball, basketball, softball, football mom.

playing colors with one another not because they match or seem to have an obvious relation with one another but more so because you observe an appeal when everything come together.
I feel the gold tie adds the right amount of "interesting-ness".
I can imagine him to be well dressed all the time and maintain style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:39 PM) :

his face is so spanish, and his elegance is so latin!
Alessandra

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:47 PM) :

He looks like he's broken a few hearts in his day.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:42 PM) :

Love the look. BTW does anyone know who he is?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:45 PM) :

I hear this guy is Spanish ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:55 PM) :

I had seen him in world magazines and always thought of him as ridiculous, not sartorial... which only tells that my taste is not very mundane when it comes to men's fashion.

Cheers!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:06 PM) :

I love this blog!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 PM) :

May I be the first to say that I don't much care for the shirt and tie combination? While pairing disparate colors may often convey a certain devil may care rakishness, pairing gold and red just screams fast food. (Why do McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's all use the same major colors?) Royal or not, I cannot share the general enthusiasm.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 PM) :

Jaime is one of my style heroes. I've never seen him badly dressed.
Impeccable taste and style !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:04 PM) :

Here in Barcelona we're waiting for your visit...come soon...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:45 PM) :

I think the color combination hinges on the coat color. A grey, black, or brown jacket would look uncoordinated, garrish or woodsy, respectively. But a dark navy jacket over a red patterned shirt and gold tie looks modern & daring.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:01 PM) :

I was suprised to see 50+ posts and figured there must have been a lot to say about this style...I think 45 of them were making the point that he isn't French, but Spanish royalty!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:10 PM) :

I met jaime de marichalar when the couple (He and Infanta Elena) were living in NY, about three years ago...
He is not only sartorial but he has a wonderfully elegant sense of humor.

Blogger atticus_finch said ... (8:11 PM) :

super slick suit...loving the shirt

Blogger Murph said ... (8:49 PM) :

I think this cat might, in fact, be Spanish. I'm not sure...does anyone know?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 PM) :

I'll give it to ya sart, he looks french

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 AM) :

love the combo. plus, i love how his head looks preternaturally big, especially compared to the redheaded guy in the background behind him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:43 AM) :

Literally laughed out loud at this...

I feel if you knew him, one day you'd find yourself saying, 'why don't you just wear something simple for once and relax?'

I wonder what kind of cologne he wears. Do men even wear cologne anymore?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:24 AM) :

He is the Duke of Lugo. He´s married with H.R.H Infanta Elena de Borbón, the first daughter of King Juan Carlos I. Jaime de Marichalar is a very close friend of Oscar de la Renta and Christian Lacroix and his wife is one of the most elegant and stylyst woman i´ve ever seen. She´s great!. She´s always in Lacroix, Valentino and Galliano. I think she should appear in Sartorialist. I love your blog. Bye.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 AM) :

yup! Sir is indeed spanish and quite famous for sporting the most extravagant, colorful (and fun!) scarves...inspirational in such an old fashioned country!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:25 PM) :

I believe that guy in the background is Leonard Zelig.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:39 AM) :

Sartorialists, please check out for Duke of Lugo's brother, Alvaro de Marichalar. Another super-stylish man but with a softer and sporty look. He's amazing

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:43 AM) :

May I add something? Infanta Elena was the ugly duck of a royalty never quite signaled for its taste -although King Juan Carlos was then to be known as a very good sartorialist, being the Larrainzar, related with the spanish designer, but not the same firm, some of HM best kept secrets , among some others.

The change of the Infanta's apperance was something to note. She went slimmer and struck in more than a glamour shot - I should note for those avid readers of the high class glossy european magazines the orthodox wedding of her cousin Alexia of Greece with a spanish architect, in London she was sporting a broad brimmed hat (http://worldroots.com/brigitte/gifs3/alexiagreece8.jpg)and following the same style that suits her very well, she made quite an appearance at her sister's wedding in Barcelona with Iñaki Urdangarin.

All this just because that man, most of the times misunderstood in Spain, was the main responsable for that change. So quite a gentleman, a dandy and a man of good taste ...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 AM) :

Strano stile, ma la foto è genuina!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 PM) :

Also, he's wearing the 'Spanish Colours'. All of my Spanish friends have -- at some point-- worn red and gold. Without question.
