On The Street..The Slow Transition To Fall, Soho
In New York the temperature can vary 15 to 20 degrees from morning to midday and back to evening. If you add to that to walking in and out of the direct sunlight and the shadow of buildings, dressing in New York City during the early Fall can be a many layered dilemma. By the same token one of my pet peeves each Fall are those people that just can't wait to breakout their new coat or chunky sweater at the first chance it may drop to 72.
The other morning at around 8 am I saw a young lady at Starbucks with a sweater, puffer vest, and scarf - I think it was around 68 at that moment and going up to 75, bet all those layers were gone by 10 am.

Dear Sart,
Please do explain why your pet peeve is the wearing of a chunky sweater at the first hint of fall. (A side note: I'm humiliated as I write bc I'm in Texas, where the high today is only supposed to be 85 degrees, which is a real reprieve from the summer heat -- no joke -- and my husband laughed when I put on a wool sweater upon leaving the house this morning.) I'd really like to hear your reasoning for the sweater objection.
Love the look, but I agree with the first poster- I think if you're goign to wear a scarf, a more closed shoe is probably in order...
Well - like the rule that if your windshield wipers are on your headlights should be on as well.
If it's cool enough for a sweater and scarf then maybe a nearly strapless dress isn't the best choice. Of course this doesn't apply to eveningwear, but it sure looks like daylight in your photo.

Beautiful. I think the shoes work- the scarf is 'warmth' but it's really all about the fabric, and its swag.
I work at a university, and I've noticed our new international students always have their sweaters and puff vests on way too early. The poor things have nothing warmer to put on when the real Maritime winter sets in. They're always savvy to it for the next year though.
Fantastic. The controlled palette balances a mix of warm/cool and bare/covered, and great smile, to boot.
Try living in SF in the summer. In my hood it is 60 but in the Marina it could be 65! Sweaters are a must (sigh!)

I love the combination of blue dress and black scarf and sweater. I love the shoes, too. I used to live NYC for 8 months and I know about the early Fall situation there. The temperature will go up in the mid day and all the sweater and scarf will go away from her. By the time she gets only the beautiful dress on her, her open shoes will go perfectly with the dress and her legs.
Only 15 or 20 degrees? Here in the mountains of the Great Northwest it's getting down into the 40s at night and up to the 90s during the day.

i know how you feel...but it takes so long for it to get really cold...and i have all these lovely sweaters and coats...global warming is a bitch. i tell ya.
What a silly pet peeve!
I'd take someone being over-excited to wear their new clothes over someone just not thinking about it any day.
I'm all for appreciation (and criticism, when constructive) of others' choices, but having it actually make you unhappy (even momentarily, as most pet peeves do) when someone's outfit doesn't suit your sense of what's weather-appropriate is so very Gawker.com.
Keep it graceful, Sart - it's what makes your site better.
I feel like the scarf is a little extreme. If you can wear sandals there is absolutely no reason to wear a scarf! It reminds me of when I lived in Africa and the people in my village thought that you should wear a scarf when you had a sore throat no matter how hot it was outside.
Perhaps she has strep?

I like the shoes. What would you have preferred? Those boring ballet flats you see everywhere? Wedges would have been nice but these look comfortable for walking, and this girl is plenty tall already
I think it is unrealistic to say that if it is cool enough for a scarf it is too cool for sandals.
Like I said, it is cool during the mornings in NY right now on the way to work but you know it will warm up during the day. Besides she can always put the cardie in her bag.
I think the key is having a workable option
i agree with sart about jumping the gun on heavy winter clothing at the first inclination of a breeze. the temperature has dropped a few degrees (down to about 75) and i saw a woman on columbus avenue in knee-high boots, thick ribbed tights, and a bulky wool cardigan. she looked like a walking feature on "top 10 must-haves for winter." talk about ungraceful (and perspiring)! but the sart? hush yo mouf!

Normally I like shoes that "pop" out of an outfit, colourwise, but metallic shoes are one of my own pet peeves: very growing up in middle-class suburbia, middle-aged (frumpy) women going out for the rare night-on-the-town with their metallic shoes (worn down at the heels).
I start to get a panicky claustrophobic feeling and want to flee straight to the streets of a big, bustling metropolis. (Where, apparently, I will bump into a Bright Young Thing wearing...metallic sandals.)
This looks cute an dnot overdone with layers.

it's a lovely ensemble that displays transition from one season to the next, if you will. it's got just the right amounts of quirk and practicality.

i don't know about practicality, but i love the colour tones. pale skin, black and blue - that's a lovely ensemble.

I too love the color tones- the color scheme is perfect. I agree that there is something about the metallic sandals that give pause... but its not terribly jarring. Ballet flats would have taken something away from this outfit- sandals, maybe not metallic, seem perfectly appropriate for an end-of-summer day.
I'm with you, Sart! There's a girl that gets on the train a few stops after me and has been wearing a tweed knee length coat every morning...I start to sweat just looking at her. It's too early!
