Marc jacobs - Game Over, He is just That Good
How is Marc Jacobs that much better than everyone else?
He exaggerates proportion just enough, he layers without getting too heavy, and he makes complete looks. Every girl that comes out you really have to study for a few moments to see what is going on and yet it rarely seems like too much.
I'm curious to hear who you think can top him in New York this season.
ps add about two or three points to what you see in these photos because the actual colors of the clothing are even more lovely in real life.

I love Marc Jacobs, but genie pants? No. The colors are lovely, though.
I'd call just about everything he does delightful...it's just the word for it...and your description of his ability to go just beyond everyone else is spot on.
What makes him at the top of his game? You just really don't know what he will do next-- and it just looks right every time. Everyone else is just plain predictable. Loving the puffy pockets, and quilted bags.
Best show so far...
It is amazing that when I go looking for items and I go "oh! I love that!", it is almose always Marc Jacobs. then I curse him for creating so many things that I want.
He knocks me out. This is THAT good. I can't be anti-MJ anymore, this spring I have to admit that he isn't overrated.. at all...
Gorgeous- looks like they walked out of a 1920's illustration or something.
Wow! He always makes his collections different yet so "in" with the trends, even better, ahead of them just so...magic! I think he's the best american designer right now! Great pics.
I really like the second look you posted... so relaxed and cool, but very polished. As a whole, I need to digest it a bit more. I liked the layering - it didn't look too heavy, as I'd feared it would look after his fall show. The only thing I'm not loving is those cropped pleated pants - the Fug Girls called them Hammer Pants, which is an astute observation :D
I'm sorry, I just assumed he's having us on and the whole show was a joke. You mean he actually expects us to wear those clothes? Oh, dear...
I love the dress on the first pic. It's girly but at the same time grown up.
not sure anyone can top him. the harem pant has already declared a type of prominence in london, in sloane square and shoreditch alike.
great shots! esp the top one.
Can someone please tell me how Marc Jacobs seems to rip off every single european and japanese designer and gets away with it!!
Last season he ripped Yamamoto appart and these season its Margiela, Chanel, Haider Ackermann,...
He´s coping the Comme des Garçons wedding collection especially and the layered t-shirt dresses have borrowed more than a bit from Helmut Lang.
Does he get away with murder because he´s Marc Jacobs? I bet that if there would be someone else behind that collection critics would rip him into pieces.
I don´t get me started on Louis Vuitton...
I love MJ!!!
I dunno, the Marc stuff is interesting but much of it strikes me as over the top and unwearable for most women.
So far I've been most excited by DKNY (those colors!) and Ben Cho (those amazing zipper details!). Very much looking forward to Friday's Vena Cava as well.
Well, I do love the color palette and the draped jersey, and the dropped waists and white collages of texture, and the artistry of the show itself (check out the show video on MJs website), but for my money (of which there is none, btw), Yigal Azrouël's collection is in the lead.
HE REALLY IS!.. I think he has the hottest clothes on the runway! I love that all the colours are so pale and yet there's a splash of metallic everywhere! bravo!
Love Marc Jacobs! Few can top him. The setting here is lovely - the lime green of the runway design sets off the grey, black and white. The second outfit is beautiful, so elegant, the draping and the 'obi'-style. His layering appears simple and clean.
my only disappointment were the shoes. only models can wear them with skirts... i hope we won't have to wear ankle high shoes/sandales next summer :(((
i can't imagine many women being able to pull off that second look.
Marc Jacobs is surprising and the clothes are always wearable - unlike many other ready to wear collections that are beautiful but not everyday friendly. I think that is a part of what makes his designs so great.
but.. i LOVED Oscar de la Renta's designs and think he can do no wrong. the silhouettes are right on and the shoes to match the print of the dresses weren't over the top- they added just enough.
In the US if Mizrahi returns to the runways..he could give him a run for the money..but he'd be the only one.
ADORE the 2nd outfit and would totally wear it... if I had that model's body.
As it is, would look fabulous in a poster.
Re: the copying thing anon posted - isn't all fashion copied anyway? It's just a question of interpretation.
For mass merchants I can tell you that the 2nd outfit would work but the bottom part has to be in a skirt format not this genie pant format. The color scheme is on the money though...
ENID P.
really nice work, especially the second image...but honestly i was more enthralled with the stage design. a beautiful mesh.
these collection is unexpected for me.I loved it so much
he is totally ripping off other designers in this collection.
its very comme des garcon ( Tao ) meets a little AsFour ( metallic fabric ) mixed with a heavy Prada influence and definatley Chanel by Karl Largerfeld its different for Marc because its not him!!
bottom outfit gorgeous! Just gorgeous
Seems like he's always at least 2 seasons ahead of everyone else. Designers are still copying his looks for a year ago.
the colours!
the colours are fine, the walkway is great though it makes them look like they are gliding along, oh for some more footage.
uh, nobody!
bring on the backlash
i hated it... just hope marc by marc jacobs will be a lot more interesting..
MJ's vision lacks substance. Unless obese or pregnant, NO woman would wear his Arabian Nights harem pants and tulip pants. He has no respect for the beautiful natural shape of a woman's body, nor does he enhance it.
Sart, great blog though.
Well, you chose the two outfits that actually look good. Most are just layers and layers of stuff piled on top off stick-thin figures on very high heels. Can anyone who isn't underweight pull off that look without looking like a bag lady? I know I couldn't.
The show was just perfect. Marc is a genius.
This collection makes me smile. Mostly because a lot of the colors he used are in tune with my own accessories collection. I'm so happy he used silver because I did quite a bit of silver, neutrals and dove grey. Yay! We've been selling the collection since July so this is really great validation that we didn't miss the boat. Phew!
I do see many influences from other designers (i.e., Chloe did some voluminous dresses like that last spring...and those harem pants? I just interned for a small fashion design studio who did that look last summer) but his layering is genius. However, Dolce and Gabbana tops him (and others) every season.
that si jsut what i thought. i felt like most of the desingers were lost(we are in a transition stage in fashion) s ome were still ont eh dark/gothy hting, adn others jsut stuck to classic, minimalistic shapes to form everyday pieces. he is the only one tht created sometign new adn formed it into a whole new look. at times it seems sort fo costumey, but then isn't all fashion? he is really pulling from the twenties adn then mixing it with eastern silhouettes--i jsut really love it. the color palette introduced in his signature lien and lower line is also a twist ont eh previosus collections... i know with his men's collections(which i love) he seeks the help of other designers to make sure its top notch. maybe he is doing that here as well? is he less of the most awesome designer ever ,ad n mro gifted witha discenring eye, adn outstanding leadership skills? i would love to visit his studio.
adn i think most women cudl wear these clothes if they had some confidence. i think the pants and top woudl be pretty slimmin g on most---but best on a tall woman. and the top one woudl look great on all but the real busty.---to me...
I love silver and I love flapperish things, but not feeling that first outfit at all. The second is nice except for the harem pants, which will be out in no time. The belt is lovely, though.
The blue outfit is as striking as they come. It would carry the show on its own. And Vlada Roslyakova is next to perfect for it. Wearability seems to be the major objection with his ideas, but let's just wait a season or two...
Too bad he can't put out a decent menswear line to save his life.
I love MJ...although over the years I've noticed his designs always bring out the most extreme opinions. You either love them or hate them. I think he's got an amazing vision.
Faboulous and fun, as ever. But once Zac Posen gets his shit together and reveals a bridge line, he will be nipping at Marc's heels.
the second look is not that hard to pull off if you are a petite woman. i wear genie pants and they look absolutely adorable.
This collection is a TRUE winner. It has been a while I have not been this excited over a MJ collection. I can't wait to get into those harem pants!
awesome, just awesome.
I am one of the marc haters - i just dont get it, i think the styling was a little interesting but the clothes and finish looks heavy, for me in nyc narcisco rodriguiz does it, he has such a beautifully developed sensiblity, his clothes look refined and sexy without being vulgur, he has his own vision and stays true to it in fashion bloodlines i think he is along the lines of geoffrey beene who is probably the most underated of all nyc designers - the man was a genius
I don't understand why you have this job but the Marc show was amazing, he's in his own leage
come on! are you serious? this was the greatest let down all week. we all look up to marc for his ability to take fashion places that most new york designers will not go, but this was like an old ungaro couture show, light and airy and completely overstyled (the hats with cellophane flowers). I'm surpised that not one publication or critic has called him out on this - i was at least expecting cathy horyn, but it seems she too is drinking the kool-aid.
I bet those pants just floated down the runway!
I'm suddenly in the mood for a meringue or two. :}
