On The Street.....Bikeman, Everywhere in New York
I would caution to say that most New Yorkers know of or have literally heard this guy. For years he has been riding around the city blasting Frank Sinatra music from the stereo taped on the back of his bike.
I took the photo just because he is such a New York character but look at those mismatched plaids!

To the contrary, the plaids are not mis-matched, they're divinely inspired. This guy's look is picture-perfect old-school New Yawk - right down to the reversed racing handle bars, fat tires, and the clipless pedals on the bike - married to just the right amount of early-adapter innovation - the Aasics kicks. I'm betting the Pro-Keds finally gave out not too long ago.
Frank Sinatra is the perfect accesory that sublimes the plaid...
I'd love to have him riding a bike with a song all over my neighborhood.
plaids aside, i just think it's a wonderful photograph - the position of his head and back, his hands, his feet, the girl on the bike traveling in the opposite direction, the pedestrians under the awning - just great. this is the best blog for so many reasons, wouldn't miss it for the world.
Not sure about the plaids... looks like a pinic blanket on the move. But the reverse handlebars brought back summers in the 70s... I immediately pictured a pal using same things on a 'dragster' self-welded bike which drew gasps of amazement as he shot down the road, even doing a 'look no hands Ma' display... until an oncoming car meant a sudden turn... and er, welded parts came unstuck. Yes, we all visited him in hopsital. The bike was junked but his stylish crash meant he became a legend.
Is it even possible to match plads? Just wondering.
he could be wearing matching plaid shorts
there is a name for matching short/shirt outfits but i forget it
Matching plaid shorts and shirt...wouldn't that be pajamas?
I think just "short set" isn' it?
this is exactly why I would live in New York, such a diverse but close-nit environment
I saw him in Central Park yesterday! Twice! I wonder what he does during the winter...
i experience great nostalgia thinking of all the "characters" in my old (very small) hometown... it's always wonderful to see another one now that i live in new york. there's something life-affirming about people who stand out, who are recognizable, and the response they provoke in a community. (it's even nicer in a big city like this.) incidentally, last summer i saw him in central park--but i'm certain that, just for that day, he was playing stan getz.
I was wondering why there was frank sinatra playing in the park last spring.
All is illuminated.
there is a pakistani guy who rides a girls bike through central park. it's pretty hilarious. he's in full pakistani garb, has a beard, and is riding a bike with a care bears basket.
I think every big city has one.... =)
They add color...!!
I love it!
such a huge city and then u get characters like this - awesome!
literally laughing out loud at 12:29's description of the pakistani guy with the care bears basket...
bikeman is one of my neighbors. he's nice; he calls me "mami" and inquires as to when i'm going to get married. last summer, he had a "for sale" sign on his bike which was funny because he had no intention of selling it.
He makes NYC, what it is today...
