Comments on "On The Street... Old Man Sneakers, Farmers Market"
I think you can find those in K-Mart or Woolworths or similar discount stores. The same place you find the black or blue crepe-soled slip-on "winos."
So beautiful. The old man with sneakers might be the perfect allegory for the difference between older and younger people's take on life. As a young person all things matter. In shoe terms, one has to have many shoes... specially (for women) the uncomfortable type.
You grow older and you know that life is about feeling happy in spite the shoes you have. Very simple yet so determines what reality might be for all.
You can find those sneakers in a place like K-Mart or Target in the slipper/sandal/footwear aisle. Buy a few pairs at a time, because they don't last nearly as long as your guy on the bench has.
love the old man shoes with dressy pants, I do it all the time.
Old Navy sells them for dirt cheap $8, on clearance in my area. They can also be found at Walmarts nationwide.
Those "old man sneakers" are just Vans... an acceptable subsitute would be gumsole kung-foo shoes that you can buy at Rite Aid or Sav-on (I don't know which you have on the East Coast)
To buy? Try Wal-Mart.
They look like Vans slip ons, which isn't surprising, they're very comfortable and they relatively cheap. www.vans.com

they have some shoes like this at PacSun, but they tried to make them look cool...
These style of shoes are pretty common among the older Asian community. In China the entire older generation wears a style similar to this because it was the cheapest/only thing available to the masses for many decades. The top would be a cotton fabric and the sole is made of many layers of a straw/cloth material instead of canvas/rubber.
Funny thing. I travelled China earlier this summer in my vans slip-ons and got tons of comments on how I was wearing "old man shoes."
Gap, actually. They (at least, used to) carry a ton of them in different colours.
I bought a pair in black at Kmart on Astor Place about 2 months ago for $8. They are so comfortable.
are those old man's sneakers? haha, half of the teenagers in Sweden wear Vans (a.k.a. old man's sneakers) :) but I actually thought about that just a few days ago, that Vans do look good even when you're dressing up a bit (if you're a guy)..
what a wonderful surprise! last tuesday, this man came and sat on the bench next to me in the park. i was reading, but i noticed that he just sat quietly. if it weren't for his shoes, i wouldn't have recognized him here.
i'm so glad that you noticed him, too.
the difference between "old-man shoes" and Vans slip-ons is the sole. All classic style vans have a really thick sole, the old-man style is usually alot thinner and just looks so much better. And by the way he is an oldman gem.
Shoe store on Hudson, Chambers, and West Broadway intersection is a good place to check. - K
Rite Aid. If those exist in NYC. They have $6 slip on sneakers, $12 quilted flannels, etc...
