World Cup After Party - p1

It is good to be back in New York!

As I walked around the city Sunday I was amazed at just how many people were watching the World Cup in big crowds at restaurants and bars. I don't even see crowds like this for a Yankees World Series game (MLB should learn to put World Series games on in the day).

Of course, because it was France vs Italy instead of rioting after the victory, a huge fashion show broke out downtown in Nolita - I just happened to walk right into the middle of it.

Traveling to Milan and Paris it has helped me see New York in a different way and see what we do well. We do ironic well, we do vintage well, and we do "so-bad-it-is-good" well. All of these qualities were on full display yesterday on Spring Street.

The young man in the last picture really looks like a young Bob Dylan!

I was in Paris at the same time as you(just got back yesterday)...there were some moments where i thought "This would be the perfect Sartorialist photo!" I was in a laundromat on Rue de Richelieu and a girl was walking out as i walked in a gorgeous dress, hopped on her vintage looking bike, and rode off. And i thougt why the hell don't i have a camera.

Sartorialist,
Welcome back and thanks for the all the images you provided us during last couple of weeks. I hope that this country picks up on the World Cup fever.
I did catch some well dressed people in the stands during the final. I just goes to show you that we can learn a few things from the people across the pond.

the first photo just epitomizes summer. looks like a late afternoon sun behind her.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:28 PM) :

the first picture is soooo lovely! I'd wear that dress myself :D

I loved everyone but the Sienna Miller/Kate Moss clone. Too bad.

i was just going to say that the man on the last picture looks like a young bob dylan, which is perfect.

The hipster aesthetic is taking over, ain't it?

Very, very true and well-said. I see a lot of that in LA. I always appreciate a bit of tongue-in-cheek, a bit of well-placed tack, when it comes to fashion. It shouldn't be taken so seriously that it becomes boring.

the first dress is fabulous!

Indeed, however:
Ironic is a tad overrated these days, isn't it? We don't seem to be able to appreciate anything for its true value, is has to have an ironic take on whatever. Oh, aren't we just so much smarter? Those idiots back in the 70s really though glittery suits and mile wide flares looked gorgeous? Well, of course I wear them, just for the irony...
When it comes to vintage, London is miles ahead.
So-bad-it-is-good - of, yes, doesn't that also fall into the irony category?

And regarding the inevitable comments on "effortlessness" - why is it a virtue per se not to make an effort? I appreciate that too much effort will often look artificial and contrived but, I guess, many of Scott's Italian and French "models" made an effort and wouldn't be too afraid to admit this, and they look just fabulous!

...but your blog is absolutely stunning ...another great effort that pays off nicely ...no irony whatsoever in this comment!

Another picture of a white Tee shirt - just to die for. I love how there is individual expression in fashion on the street, but then from a crowd shot from 25 feet - every outfit looks the same!

Awesome spread of photos there: the first is very 'Lindsy Lohan'-esque and the final one just screams "ultra cool".

"We do ironic well, we do vintage well, and we do "so-bad-it-is-good" well. All of these "

Thanks for this description, this really helps me understand why the NYC pictures resonate with me much more than Paris. Paris seemed to be "high fashion", while I am more of the throwback, somewhat ironic.

The girl in the middle in the green athletic shorts/top and white hat and Roman sandals is dressed to support the Italian team I'm sure!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:04 AM) :

um, that begs the question.... what do we SUCK at??? what could we improve on, style-wise? i'll take a guess: timeless fashion/classics.

but i want you to expound on that, if you have a moment.

Why dont any of these people know how to have a good time? They act like they do, but acting and doin are 2 different subjects altogether. These photos are the perfect reason not to be in NY. Hopefully NYers will have a brighter outlook next year..........

AZZURRI MITO :-D

Love the first girl's look. Hate the gladiator sandals...
