His legs are decent. I could go for the long sleeve shirt and shorts look, but the thick pullover is just too much. But I do like all of the individual pieces.
The look is enhanced by the guy's muscular physique. Look at his sculpted calves, the way the shorts are tight on his legs, and the clear outline of his bicep through the sweater.

Finally, a fresh perspective on American menswear! An amazing collection that is sophisticated, but not too serious. We need more!!

sexy man. and i love the 2nd outfit. i like the unexpected details. at least to me- no socks with brogues[?] oxfords[?] [help me people], a tightish pinstripe short, scarf. nice.
Is that a military ribbon on his upper right lapel? It makes a cool accent to the plaid pocket square on his casual jacket.
thom browne does suits and this new guy looks more casual and approachable the only comparison i see is the no socks thing.. i dig the short look. i may have to invest in the silk scarfs for fall.
Looks like a service ribbon on the label which is an interesting touch...if you're a vet. I would have never have thought of doing that myself.
My guess is that after he crossed the street, his feet were begging him to take off those brand new oxfords.

I wonder if the "dress shoes with no socks" look will catch on to the extent that the "sports jacket with the sleeves pushed up" look did once upon a time ... will it become something to look back at and cringe, like old pictures of ourselves in full Miami Vice glory? Or will it not even get off the runway?
Hey, why not TWO pairs of socks, with the outers folded down to show a contrasting-color inner pair ... yeah!

Yeah, I agree that this may very well be a trend to be remembered with regret. But sometimes a trend can be very positive. A fresh alternative to the classics with a great deal of attitude. Come on, you have to admit, there are too many "rules" in men's fashion (compared to the ladies). As long as I could remember, guys have worn dress shoes without socks. It has simply received more attention. Women wear closed toe dress shoes with skirts. It should be no big deal that a guy wear nice short with equally nice shoes. It's all about balance right?
The stuff looks great...I like it a lot. Fashionable, yet masculine.
where is he possibly going besides brunch? bottom half of legs in an office? nix. in a movie theater? yuk. maybe he is in transit between the gym and home? maybe he works at home but leaves the house just for coffee and a paper? it's not just how you look on the street, although looking fab on the street is fab, it is where it looks like you're going once you get off the street. this is why everyone is saying clark kent, it's not just the glasses, he looks like he is in transition. then again aren't we all right now?
Sorry, I don't like the shoes, no socks with shorts...the shorts are ok, a scarf in warm weather with shorts is silly, but each to their own. I understand wanting to push the current limits, but this one goes nowhere.

wow - unless you are one of the few people that has seen the collection in person during a private preview how can you say the whole thing is rubbish?
The pictures I showed give a sense of the collection but don't show the little details so how can you be so sure it is rubbish?
wait until the collection hits Bergdorf this Fall then I would love to hear your assessment

real life and real weather is so much more varied than what a lot of you are giving it credit for. Maybe it is because I don't work in an office that I don't think this idea is so weird.
As I write this it is 57 degrees in New York and it will warm up to mid 70's today. I could complete see wearing this to get my coffee and read the paper. My legs rarely get cold, if I can keep my torso warm I'm set. As the day progresses I can take off the sweater and scarf and throw it in a bag - now I don't have to go all the way back home. What is the difference really if he were wearing a hoodie? not much just a style option To me this is life in NY
Again this is about inspiration - I doesn't have to be that exact sweater or those exact shoes - maybe it is a cardigan or Jack Purcells or even an old blazer.

These looks are what make living in NYC so great. Considering our varied climate, anyone could wear a sweater with shorts and is accepted if it was "activewear" (i.e. patagonia, etc.). But this is a dressier and chic alternative absolutely perfect for urban life. We have to remember too, this is a Fall look.
Thanks for depicting people who exhibit a sense of style. The glamour is on the street!
i would say whoever has negative comments to a designer who is starting a collection is acutually kind of pathetic, i think we should try to encourage each other, not knock them down- there is already enough of that in the world. i am all for any type new creativity.
I agree with you completely Sartorialist. The look is great, utilitarian. But you must admit the elements you show here - the graphic, cropped cardigan; the tailored short pants, presumably made with suit fabric; frumpled oxford shirt; no socks with shoes; and the distinct preppy American model would not have been possible if Thom Browne had not opened the doors to this newfound American spirit in menswear. So while bravo to Tim for jumping ahead and creating TB sportswear, let's all give it up to TB for starting the look in the first place.
Just keeping it real, that's all.
I love the scarf for spring summer. The Europeans have been doing it with menswear for a while. Etro has some beautiful linen and lightweight gauze scarfs in summer and spring colors. The scarf makes a great, stylish accent, like a necktie or pocket square. I met with an Italian gentleman this past wekend in Las Vegas and he had a scarf tied in a loose knot over a t-shirt and under a jacket. A very cool look.
This looks great! I own one of the stores Tim will be selling at and I have not seen such cool, American style like this in awhile. It's so refreshing to see a designer take a fashionable, masculine approach to menswear. Tim will definately run in the same pack as Cloak, Trovata, Thom Brown and the new relaunched John Bartlett.
Keep an eye on this one!

I agree with the Thom Browne comparisons and may very well be true. On the other hand, one must say that TB's inspiration has a source as well. It's a nostalgia forgotten and brought back again, right? I feel it's a matter of who get's it right and most important, keeps it alive. I love many aspects of TB, but I question his longetivity and marketing tactics. I love upholding the craft details but still, his signature "proportions" on what make's a man look good is still questionable. When I watched the movie Stay, (Ewan McGregor outfitted by TB) I loved the looks but then felt too distracted by the exposed ankles and too big shoes (esp. when he's decked-out in colder climate layers [coat, jacket, sweater]) then suddenly all this exposed ankle??? I should never have to look down for that long. It should be an overall look, right? Sure it's all about the styling and individual, but the way Timothy Hamilton is doing it (so far), I enjoy the overall look, not distracted but a overwrought concept. Yet, that's just me, like anon 12.09pm "keeping it real".
If one disagrees with a "negative" remark, it's probably more useful to offer a counter-argument - as Sartorialist has done here - than to say that negative remarks should not be allowed. There's already a school of thought that fashion people are mindless uncritical trend-followers ....
And just to show I'm not brown-nosing The Big S - Bertie's cmments are directed at the pictures shown here, aren't they? Not at the collection as a whole.
i think the clothes look amazing - nice to have something fresh on the market. great colors and fits. it's about time.
I've had many female friends tell me my ankles are sexy...some of them are positively transfixed. I still don't know why so many men still have trouble showing their ankles. Most of the people who make comments about my TB cropped pants are other men - and I think that's the rub - that we're supposed to be manly and exposing skin isn't manly. I can frankly care less about what men think since it's the women I love! :)
Dudes, it's okay to show a little ank. It's hot! The right girls love it! Try it. Go out with cropped pants and no socks. You'll get a lot more "Hello's" than "Goodbye's." Especially if you have an attitude to match. Laters.

i love the sweater with shorts combo - and completely agree with the sart...in the morning it can be cool and warm up throughout the day. there are times in VA where its 50 in the morning and 80-90 during the day. if you're walking around the city you better have some layers on. and - a sweater is easily thrown in a bag, you can't do that with a bulky jacket.
I read a really good article on Timothy Hamilton's new line in this weeks DNR. It had some very cool looks.
Really excited to see this line I have been waiting for something new in mens!

these are my favorite two photos of yours sartor. i spent the last half hour scanning just to enjoy looking at them again. dress shoes with no socks? it's the only way! jill sander understands. the scarf, the glasses, the cardigan, the shorts. it's perfect to me. oh, and the pocket square is stellar.
