The Real World

I get a lot of comments about certain outfits that I have shot don't work in the "real world" - I think the people making those comments are just not considering all the jobs people do that allow them their Sartorialist freedom.

I shot both of these today in Soho about a half hour apart. They were both pretty surprised when I was able to guess what they were doing.

Example #1
Any guy dressed with that level of style, carrying a mirror (not on Flea Market Sunday) must be prop buying - he was, for the John Varvatos store.

Example #2
Wearing a vintage piece like that and carrying several big bags of clothes she was obviously returning samples from a photo shoot.

I guessed on both and scored big points by being able to guess.

God, I love a vintage jumpsuit.

and God, I love the cute guys in the khakis . . .

You are great! You are sensitive, that's the reason why this blog in so interesting. I would like to have your skill to see and read the strangers you pass by. Go on like this!

#1 - blah. I dress like that everyday. Where were you on my way to work?
#2 - Is that Brooke Shields?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:09 PM) :

aren't his khakis too big on him? it's bunching up on the waist..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:38 PM) :

A white shirt and well worn khakis always look great. But, this guy really does them justice with the deck shoes, the old school sunglasses and vintage look belt. Its those touches along with their fit, that make a real style statement.

The vintage jumpsuit is original, refreshing, and brilliant.

Clever you!!!
Creative jobs allow for creative outfits....what about boring corporate jobs?

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (9:27 PM) :

for Gus
they are not deck shoes but leather Espadrilles

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 PM) :

old man shoes are the best.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 PM) :

great looks ... shows that work-clothes are in the eye of the beholder !!! .. great to see how the "other half" lives

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:25 PM) :

Most guys can't pull this look off, but this guy sure can. And it helps that he looks a bit like Rob Lowe.

The woman looks fabulous. From her aviators to her huaraches. She reminds me of "Felicity" star, Keri Russell, back when she had long hair.

Being in the fashion industry and all, these people can get creative with their outfits...how I wish it were the same for people with boring desk jobs. *sigh*

Style is not a question of what you wear but how you wear it. Considering this, I guess everybody can be stylish, even working in a bank or with a boring corporate job ...

Just do it :-)

#1: Great style, white shirt with wide pants are always fine.

Oooh, Sart, can we make this a regular game---guess this persons profession/what they are up to?

I'm in Athens Greece this summer, wish I had a camera to share some of the stylish ladies and gents I see going about my day,

the thing that makes the woman in this post look so funky is that she appears really comfortable and confident. that outfit on someone who wasn't entirely convinced it would work would not be the same.
i think fashion is all about confidence in your own style.
great work sartie, on guessing their jobs!!!
xo

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:48 AM) :

that guy has some very cool shoes (look like black leather espridrilles?)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:04 AM) :

how you wear it ??? what does that mean.... most people can't wear anything "in" style or "out" , how should they wear it without the right bodystyle

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:34 AM) :

Leather espadrilles...very cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:04 PM) :

I love the guy's look, but whenever I wear oversized khakis like that I always end up looking like a hobo. I wish I knew the secret. Perhaps it's all in the attitude.

The girl: fantastic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:01 PM) :

i am also in love with that vintage jumpsuit. i buy a lot of them but that is a humdinger! i would wear it.

and props to you for your good guessing, that is very impressive.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:49 PM) :

Apparently I am the only one who thinks the jumpsuit is awful. The top is cute, flowy pants are great, but bunched ankles? Bad.
It must be a pain to use the bathroom in that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:34 PM) :

Love the guy with the white shirt. Very JFK jr.
