Why I Love Luigi Borrelli Shirts

I was talking to a menswear buyer the other day, and he told me something that he had heard while in Italy during a Borrelli appoIntment. As we all know Borrelli is famous for the handwork on their shirts: hand sewn buttonholes, interior collar band, yoke, etc. Apparently this work really is done by little old Italian ladies at their homes in the nearby countryside surrounding the Borrelli factory. When the ladies send the shirts back to the factory, the shirts have to be vigorously washed because they are covered in cigarette ash, dirt from the natural oil in the women's hands, tiny drops of blood, and the shirts smell like food.

Of course by the time they reach your Neiman Marcus they are perfectly presentable examples of high-quality craftsmanship, but I love the idea that they begin life in such a humble and human way.

I hope these women are paid well for it. I love Borelli shirts, but their fit are a bit big on the waist. Have you heard of the Morziello line, much better fit IMHO for slimmer (i.e. not fat) guys.

Nearly all European producers supply the US with models they feel are more appropriate to our general girth. If you buy a Borrelli shirt from Bergdorf Goodman or Neiman Marcus you will get a much larger body than one you buy in Europe or from the Borrelli store.

I recently bought a Borrelli shirt from Barneys NY in Beverly Hills. The fit was much slimmer. I stopped buying them because the were too generously cut around the middle. Neiman Marcus orders the larger cut in all there high priced shirts{Etro, Lorenzini, Borrelli, Brioni, Isaia etc..)

Try Bagariny, those are the absolute world best shirts. Totally hand made in Italy to the highest of standards in a true slim fit

I used to always buy Borrelli but just recently I found something better wich also addresses the fit question. ORIALI from Florence make fantastic shirts and they're also slim-fit. The best of both worlds.

Luigi Borrelli shirts are still hand made by "craftsman", men, women with 10+ years of experienced sartorial sewing, cutting etc...

I like these hand made shirts a lot so I added these to my collection of ties, cufflinks, pocketsquares and Kiton, Barba Napoli shirts on my web site www.tiedeals.com

It's lovely to get this feel of life from the 2 shirts I own. They are simply perfect in how they fit me.

However, this must be said. My shirts from TM Lewin (Windsor fits) and Hawes & Curtis (also Windsor full wide collars) evoke the same love in me as my Borrelli shirts. Difference being that the British shirts are a bit easier on the wallet.

Love this blog btw.
