Marc Jacobs Fall 2006

Some shows are just so beautiful it literally hurts.
This show captures everything I love about design.
Color, volume, texture, layering, mixing divergent references and best of all the collection always looks even better in the store than is does in runway photos.

Marc Jacobs has earned every bit of respect he has garnered in his career, and he still relatively young. So what has to happen for us to begin considering that he just may be the most important designer America has ever produced?

you can't call him that simply because the guy is dreadful at dressing men. almost as bad as michael kors. he can't, he has no imagination for men.

it took him 10 years to really hit his groove in women's so maybe he just needs a few more years to work it out. His mens is a lot cooler though than Michael, Calvin, Donna.

In an odd way Ralph is so untrendy that I think it helps make the collection pretty cool.

try as i might, i just don't see a day when i would stop buying RL. i may travel far and wide and take a liking to so many other designers, but every year i find myself buying at least one or two polo items. not on principal, i just always seem to find something i like. i think when you have that large and varied a catalogue and so many desingers working for you, somewhere someone is going to make something nice for Ralph--not luxe, not trendy, just nice, classic. i feel the same way though less so about calvin and dkny. they follow more often than they lead. hell, they mostly follow.

my gripe with jacobs, though, is his inexplicable jones for retro--BAD retro. the fact that many items are italian-made with fine materials only makes the poor designs stand out more. yech. i'm glad, tho, that he's over the audrey hepburn thing. that's good for the girls.

Who has been better?
I'm not holding my breathe for Donna or Calvin.
Narciso was the same thing, different day.
Tuleh is years away.
The only real competition in the future ,as it stands right now, is Proenza Schouler.

I read somewhere that Marc doesn't even design any of his menswear, he just has a creative team. I'll try to find the interview.

Every big time designer has a design team but Marc's collection is done with such a consistent hand that you can tell he is very involved with what goes down the runway.

I read that article too, Chad Moore re him not even designing his menswear line. It's online at newyorkmetro.com. I think Marc Jacobs is overrated. He is very talented at copying other designers, has an excellent design team and even better stylists. I wonder when will people realise he is just an imitator..

What I don't get is that when I dress that way, I'm a slob, but when Marc Jacobs sends it down the runway, it's considered genius. Maybe I should say I'm wearing MJ instead of admitting it's from Goodwill.

Danielle,
Everyone is focusing on the layering but the reason it doesn't look sloppy is because of how well the clothes fit the model.

Look at the photo second from the top, look how well that jacket fits her, that is the subtle thing that most people don't pick-up and don't tell me it is because she is a model, she had two or three fittings before the show to make sure it fit. Any person off the street can have their clothes fit by a local tailor.

If you are shopping at Goodwill (nothing wrong with that) then you are probably not getting items that are close to your size. How about spending a little bit of the money you saved on a top rate tailor, Get the sleeve length right, nip in the waist for your proportion. etc - don't forget, you get what you pay for.

Hey, Sartorialist, you sound like me, spouting off about what I do not know, not the top-notch professional I'm sure you are. Danielle is a top rate tailor.

i appreciate this collection but im still young and more colourful shows such as dolce and gabbana and anna sui made more of an impression on me -great shapes and textures though!he is one of the best designers of our time and you the best sartorialist!!!
