Comments on "Hands Of A Tailor"
What are the extent of his responsibilities at Domenico Vacca? Does he tailor custom-made garments or make adjustments to ready-to-wear garments?
I don't know his full responsibilities, I had not been planning to shoot him but when he came out of the back during the shoot I thought he had great character. When I saw his hands. I knew I had to shoot them. I'm sure he works on alterations and adjustments but to do that on the high quality garments that Vacca offers, a tailor has to be very skilled.
"Want to know the mark of a true tailor?"
I believe that, long, long ago, tailors were known by their "tailors' bunions." If I'm not mistaken, these deformities (which occur on the outside of the widest part of the foot) were attributed to the cross-legged posture characteristic of tailors in the dim pre-history of the craft.
Have you ever seen a person smoke without taking the cigarette out of his mouth? This person, too, was likely a tailor or similar craftsman. (Though how they did it with pins between their lips is a mystery to me!)
